Singles Results, First Round

[1]Sylvie Bailly def. BYE
She's the #1 player in the world and now has to deal with that pressure as she is the Queen of the tour.

Hillary Nguyen def. Candela Sanchez 6/3, 6/4
Candy caught a late flight to Brisbane so she looked a bit tired, but regardless, Hillary earned the win and moves to round 2.

Pamela Bowden def. Clair McKrain 7/5, 4/6, 7/6(3)
Clair finished out the fall season on a roar but Pamela stopped her in dramatic match today.

Carmen Prado def. [5]Luna-Willow Bartoli 7/5, 6/3
This was a shocker. Carmen is pretty quiet and Luna is consistent, but Australia has a funny way of turning everything upside down.

[6]Jane Wong def. BYE
Jane has re-established herself in the top 10 and now has to hold herself firm to stay there.

Marteena Huubere def. Rita Cebolla 7/6(3), 5/7, 7/6(1)
This was a heart breaker for Rita, the newcomer, who almost knocked off FWTT legend Marteena.

Destiny Hernich def. Molly Jacob 6/2, 7/6(5)
Dess struggled in the second set with another newcomer, Molly. She has a promising future ahead of her, however.

[4]Saba Abid def. BYE
Saba came close to #1 last year but has some work to do this year to do the same.

[3]Giuseppina Benedetti def. BYE
Giusa firmly established herself in the upper echelons of FWTT last year and is looking for staying power in 2011.

Karen Amato def. Alijah Pemovic 6/7(5), 7/6(5), 7/6(4)
The fight and determination from Alijah and Karen today was very impressive. It was such a shame there had to be a loser, but Karen was able to advance.

Aveta Tenesova def. Ebony Starr 7/6(5), 6/1
In this battle of newcomers, Aveta showed how strong she was winning in easy fashion.

[ALT]Verena Jameka Starr def. [8]Togtdyalttai Wachiramanowong 7/6(6), 6/7(3), 7/6(3)
Another epic match in Brisbane today as Verena was actually the higher ranked player. She entered late and came to play and knocked off Tog in a tight match.

Lindsay Raymond def. [7]Martine Kartincova 7/5, 3/6, 6/4
Lindsay beat back the offense from the Wimbledon Champion in a tight three-setter.

Patsy Lou Selez def. Mladen Divkovich 6/0, 7/5
Patsy made easy work of the newcomer, but fell behind early in the second set before coming back.

Syria Gonzalez def. Regla Torres 3/6, 6/3, 7/6(4)
Regla has told FWTT organizers she is back for good, but looked a little tired today against Syria. We expect her back in full force in Sydney.

[2]Ziyi Zianzhi def. BYE
Ziyi has a tremendous opportunity to get to that #1 spot this year, so look for her to be focused.

Singles Results, Second Round

Hillary Nguyen def. [1]Sylvie Bailly 7/6(3), 6/3
Wow - the crowd and press was shocked at this one as the #1 player in the world was knocked off by the upstart Hillary in her first match of 2011.

Carmen Prado def. Pamela Bowden 6/4, 6/4
This was a good opportunity for either player to earn some great points and Carmen was the steadier player.

[6]Jane Wong def. Marteena Huubere 6/4, 6/4
This second round battle of the legends saw Jane win in two tight sets against the Aussie favorite.

[4]Saba Abid def. Destiny Hernich 7/6(1), 4/6, 6/4
Dess took Saba to the limit today but couldn't take the match as Abid moves on to the quarterfinals.

[3]Giuseppina Benedetti def. Karen Amato 4/6, 6/4, 7/6(4)
The Italian Battle was an epic one as Karen almost took out the highly regarded and well skilled Giusa.

Aveta Tenesova def. [ALT]Verena Jameka Starr 7/6(5), 6/7(3), 7/6(5)
The young Pole has not lost a match in her debut in the FWTT and gets another solid win.

Lindsay Raymond def. Patsy Lou Selez 1/6, 7/5, 6/2
Lindsay had to fight for this win, being down in the second set, but she was able to claw her way back against Patsy.

[2]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Syria Gonzalez 6/4, 6/4
The Chinese star was able to get her first win of 2011 in straight sets by defeating the Spaniard.

Benedetti Impressed with Italian Newcomer

Italian FWTT star, Giuseppina Benedetti defended her claim to the being the top Italian player in the rankings on Wednesday in Brisbane...but barely! Karen Amato, who joined the tour late last season, took the fourth ranked Benedetti to the limit, before falling 7-6(4) in a final set tiebreaker. The two exchanged long rallies through out much of the match, and for most of the match Amato looked like the better player as Benedetti shook of the rust in her first match of the season with some uncharacteristic unforced errors. Experience won out in the end, though, as Amato froze up and hit 5 unforced errors, which included a double fault, in the final set tiebreaker. "She's definitely a talented player. I knew that coming in and was a bit nervous with it being my first match of the year. I hopefully started to get back into match form, though," admitted Benedetti. "I haven't had much of a chance to talk to her, but we are the same age, so I really hope to get to know her. I trained at the Sanchez-Casals Academy when I was younger, so I didn't get to play juniors with many of the other Italian girls." After Amato's forehand soared long on match point, the two embraced at the net. "I just told her she played great and not to be disappointed, she would have plenty of other chances to beat me (laughs). Then I told her that if she ever needed advice or help on adjusting to the tour she can feel free to call me. Of course it looks like she's already adjusted well, she already has some big wins from last season," revealed Giusa. While the Italian Lioness, as Benedetti is known, advanced to the quarterfinals to meet another tour newcomer, in Aveta Tenesova, Benedetti was most excited about the prospect of a steady Fed Cup team: "It's going to be so awesome to have a full strong team for Fed Cup this season with [Karen] and Annalise [Benedetti]. Hopefully Silvana [Fabiani] can come back, too, and we can make a run for the title!"

Chinese teenager coming of age

Jan 6th 2011
Brisbane, Australia - China has enjoyed considerable success on the FWTT over the last decade. It's players have battled through to win some of the biggest titles on the tour – perhaps most notable of those titles was Jane Wong’s French Open grand slam victory in 2001 and Zianzhi Ziyi’s Olympic Gold medal run in 2008. The two have brought the nation to the forefront of women’s tennis, and enter 2011 ranked 6 and 3, respectively.

Zianzhi Ziyi celebrated her 20th birthday yesterday – Jan 5th – and did so by earning her first match win of 2011. Zianzhi looked to be in good form as she defeated Spaniard Syria Gonzalez, to advance to the quarter-finals where she will meet Canadian veteran Lindsay Raymond. The world’s 3rd ranked player was not the only Chinese woman to advance to the quarters in Brisbane, as world no. 6 Jane Wong knocked out veteran Aussie star Marteena Huubere in her second round match.

China’s stars recently announced their intention to form a permanent doubles partnership and will participate in their first event together here in Brisbane.
“When Nthama held that press conference, saying she wanted to experience a different partner every year, I immediately contacted Jane to see if she wanted to play. And thankfully, she said ‘yes’. Throughout the December holidays we've been training back in China… I feel very comfortable playing alongside her and I think that’s incredibly important.”
Zianzhi has won 15 career doubles titles, while Jane has 24. Both are former two-time grand slam doubles champions and both have collected a year-end Championship title.
“I feel extremely excited for what’s to come this year, so much is happening in life right now – I wouldn’t have it any other way...”

Zianzhi and Wong will open their doubles campaign against Italian Giuseppina Benedetti and Canadian Lindsay Raymond.

Jane and Ziyi ready for 2011

In a rare interview with Jane, she answer a couple of questions after leaving the practice court.

Jane: I am so delighted to partner with Ziyi. I was very happy with the partnership with Nthama and I am glad that she have find a new doubles partner. But playing with Ziyi is a dream for me, I think we both have the same passion to possibly teaming up for Olympics and possibly setting up a China Fed Cup team.

Jane: We train so much during the holidays, and I hope I can play well coming into this year, my aim is to win a grand slam and get higher on the ranking. Same as last year, I want to get to the year end championship for both singles and doubles. With such a strong competition nowadays, it will be a really tall order for me!

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

Carmen Prado def. Hillary Nguyen 5/7, 7/5, 7/6(6)
Both of these players were surprise quarterfinalists and saw the longest match of 2011.

[4]Saba Abid def. [6]Jane Wong 7/6(3), 5/7, 7/5
This was the first battle royale of top 10 players and it saw Saba defeat the elder Chinese.

[3]Giuseppina Benedetti def. Aveta Tenesova 6/4, 4/6, 7/6(4)
Giusa had another tight three setter against an FWTT rookie and barely edged it out - one thing is true, she's getting lots of match practice.

[2]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Lindsay Raymond 7/5, 6/2
Ziyi has had two matches and two straight set wins and finds herself in the semifinals.

Both matches were quite close between Giusa and Ziyi...unfortunately, I forsee Ziyi winning this one in straight sets pretty easily.

Good luck Ziyi:)

Zianzhi into Brisbane final

Brisbane, Australia – Zianzhi rallied to defeat Italian world no. 4 Giuseppina Benedetti, 76(3) 63 to progress to the final in Brisbane, Australia. Just over a week away from the Aussie Open and the Chinese starlet has turned up the heat, winning through with three consecutive straight-set victories. Next week Zianzhi will fly further South to the country’s capital, Sydney, before landing in Melbourne for the year’s first grand slam event, the Australian Open.
Many have questioned whether or not the Chinese star has what it takes to reach the coveted number one ranking this year. If rankings are any indication, she seems perfectly poised to do so. With no points to defend until after the Aussie Open – and little more until the French – Zianzhi should have plenty of time to work her way up the rankings.
“So long as I’m playing well, that’s all that matters. Obviously it’s a major goal of mine, but we’ll just have to wait and see. There are so many great players out there, all vying for the top spot, the field is incredibly diverse, very competitive. I think a lot will come down to the Australian Open this year.”

On her opponent tomorrow, Saba Abid:
“Obviously we’ve played a couple times, fairly recently. At the year-end championships and in the US Open final, last year. I won the most recent, but she won the two prior. So it’ll be interesting to see where we’re at now. Regardless, I expect a very tough match, hopefully we can show the crowd some good tennis.”

Meanwhile, Zianzhi and Wong bowed out of the doubles draw in their opening match. Both will participate in doubles action in Sydney next week.

These two have played some high quality (and very important matches) lately and Saba seems to have the upper hand as she denies Ziyi another title.

Marteena and Regla had a great time in Brisbane and united for a championship neither of them expected. Giusa and Lindsay were happy just to make the finals, but look for bigger things next week in Sydney.
