I'd kind of expect her to beat Justine at Hopman...Justine apparently doesn't have her elbow at 100%, and really the last time they played Ana was awful.

Awesome!

:bounce:Sorry... but only in yours dreams
Ana will tank-job Sydney and will win only HC and AO this january

BTW I just visit site of worlds most famous bookmaker William Hill to check odds for upcoming Hopman Cup (winner) (http://www.williamhill.com/en/nui/free-bet/#http://sports.williamhill.com/bet/EN). Today's odds are: SRB-1.91, GBR-4.50, BEL-7.00, USA-10, ITA-13, AUS-15, FRA-26, KAZ-34. But bigger impression on me have odds from "WTA specials" link there which I notice, where for Who Will Be 2011 Year End WTA Number One? (http://www.williamhill.com/en/nui/free-bet/#http://sports.williamhill.com/bet/EN) W.Hill give odds: Caro-3, Kim-4, Serena-7, Vera-7, Ana-9, Henin-11, Vika-21, Stosur-26, JJ-26, Venus-34, Maria-34, Fran-34. Is that just me, or W.Hill very overrated chances of Caro, Kim, Serena and Vera?!? Nobody knows how many times Serena will spend to be back on high level and will she be (ever again) full ready; Clijsters with hers Hardcourts big events ONLY reduced schedule already have maximum in 2010 (#3) and no signs that she will change anything in 2011, Vera cant be better than in 2010, and Caro which more than 60% points traditionally coming from fast hardcourts (August-October) no way that will be so lucky again like in 2010 that both Williams and both Belgians will not play anything after USO. But OK, W.Hill is most famous bookmaker in the world with reason, so we must to live with fact that Ana will start 2011 like player which chances to finish 2011 at WTA#1 is rated just at #5 :( :( :( ;)

Novak is in Dubai preparing for the new season(The guy had barely any holidays before he had to start training again, with his first match being less than a month after he finished D.Cup).In case you didn't know Hopman Cup is an indoor tournament so what conditions you're referring to adapting to I'm not quite sure. And aswell as that, it was 23 degrees celsius in both Dubai and Perth today,so I'm sure he will be adjusted to the Australian heat when it actually becomes a factor like at the Aussie Open where they play outdoors. Both Murray and Isner haven't arrived yet either(though I read on a Perth journo's twitter that Murray is the only player that won't be there for the ball apparantely) so is he meant to practice with phantom players or what? It's different for Ana,practically all the girls are there so she's been knocking up with them. He's been in a training camp in Dubai with Viktor and some other players he can hit with and he'll be in Perth at some stage on Friday.Next time get your facts straight before you bash a player for being lazy or unprofessional or whatever it is you were trying to say

As far i saw there is 10°C difference between Dubai and Perth but i guess we are looking at different forecasts
Novak is the most sensitive player i ever saw ,he has problems with pretty much everything so at least he could do is arrive there few days sooner and adapt imo  Didn`t he lose a match last 2 times at AO bc of heat .One time it was indoor ,other time it was outdoors

Ana always arrives in every tournament she plays 5-7 days earlier it has nothing to do with other female players being there
I`ll bash whoever i want and whenever i want(this wasn`t even bashing since i like Novak ) ,if you don`t like it just put me on ignore

No,no you're absoulutely right, he should have come to Perth and knocked up against a wall, ideal prep, rather than wasting his time with actual players in Dubai.Do you know where the top two players in mens tennis are right now? In the Middle East and will be playing Doha next week.Apparantely they don't think it's too cold a prep for Australia.Yeah he lost in 2009 due to heat which affected his breathing problems, but he won in 2008.And 2010 was a night match and a completely different situation. He was leading 2 sets to 1 on Tsonga and had just thrashed him 6-1 in the third when he had to run off court at the start of the fourth to throw up due to some virus and played shit from there on in(absolutely nothing to do with heat).I am a big fan of Ana but how you think she should be giving lessons to Novak on how to prepare himself given both their results in the last two years and his ability to stay in the top 3 for the last four years,is beyond me(even if her problems were mainly mental, but they weren't all mental.Prior to hiring Marija in Summer she wasn't the fittest player out there either)And again not a criticism of Ana,but you're hardly comparing like with like with their arrival times when Nole had two weeks off at the end of the season in comparison to two months.Every player has a pre-season training regime before their first tournament, and considering he only had two weeks(including this week)if he took a two week holiday(which would be needed with the length of the season),then no doubt there was plenty of stuff to complete before coming to Perth

Sorry to all other posters for hijacking the thread a little with something that's kind of off-topic, but I just felt what was said was a little unfair and not accurate.

I think what Ana needs to improve most is her return. Sometimes games went by that she just gifted to her opponents because she hit all the returns into the net. Her return last year while it picked up was at times no better than any other Brainlesskova on the tour.

Yeah cos when you're a millionaire ten times over like Roger and Rafa, you really notice an extra few grand in your bank account.Because they are so ridiculously rich now they have the luxury of doing what suits them, rather than where the most money is at.When you've got enough money to buy anything you could ever want in life a million times over... yeah you really factor money into your tournament schedules then

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great time on New Year's Eve, and that 2011 brings you everything you wish for.

I had a lot of fun at the New Year's Ball in Perth last night. The atmosphere here at the Hopman Cup is so positive: it's a wonderful place to be, especially at the start of the New Year.

Novak arrived just in time for the Ball, and we remembered how enjoyable the first one we went to was, five years ago, when Novak sang!

One of the highlights of the evening was meeting Mrs Hopman, who is in her 90s and traveled from Florida especially for the Cup. It was so nice to meet her, and many people I remember from when I played here in 2006.

The theme for the Ball was "Love, Peace and Tennis", and there was music from the '60s, which we enjoyed dancing to. When it comes to putting on fun events, the organizers here really are the best. Before and during the whole event they really spoil the players.

I didn't see much of Perth during my last visit but this time I have visited some beautiful beaches. It's like a postcard: white sands and the blue Indian Ocean. The only problem is the danger of shark attacks.

The other day we were preparing to go to one of the main beaches in the city but it was closed because three Tiger sharks were spotted just 80 metres from the shore.

A few hours later the beach was full of people again, with many people swimming in the sea...but we didn't feel like going into the water by then!!

In the photo you can see me at the Ball with my coach Antonio and fitness trainer Marija.

Love
Ana

Hmm, let me think, Murray Djokovic and any other top players that don't play Doha(or Abu Dhabi). They seem to be able to resist it.If you think Fed and Nadal are playing for money at this stage in their careers then whatever, they play wherever they feel prepares them best(or a tournament they like playing at)for having an assault on the slams. That's what motivates them now, slams, slams, slams.I mean the amount they're rolling in per day what with huge payout lifetime Wilson, Nike,Rolex contracts etc, before you even factor in any prize money..If they thought there was a tournament to prepare them better for the slams offering less money, then they'd be playing there. But whatever, call me nuts if ye want

Yes.. Ana lost some serious weight. It's clear how she has been training hard this off season. Ana is looking as fit as ever... and that should help her game tremendously in the next few tournaments, but sometimes losing weight also takes some adapting.

I also hope she has it clear that she is an aggressive player and she needs to go for her serve and forehand and trust it. Not go pushing just because she is fit and she can.

I`m also interested to see how she is serving , tbh after such a long time i`m interested in everything

Ok, first match of the year so I'm not going to be hard on Ana. Although the first set wasn't good, she still did a very good job fighting, staying in it by saving BPs and eventually winning it (something that probably wouldn't have happened during her slump period). Second set was much better!

Can't wait to watch the mixed doubles but next up, Novak!

Amazing serving in patches. :worship: Mostly horrible though off the ground. That backhand :tape:. Let's hope it was just early-season rust.

What a chump Yari is though. Don't you just love it when players just give up after losing a first set? Same thing happened with Pavlyuchenkova in Bali last year.

Ok... so first match of the year and it's a win!

The first set was horrible.. really.. horrible. Ana was passive, her footwork was messy, balls were landing short and weak, the toss was all over the place, and she was puff serving. The positive thing is that she fought hard.. that attitude will win her matches, and that is crucial.. not always one can play well, but always have to find ways.

The second set was much better.. sure.. Shvedova let her level down.. but Ana started serving a lot better, and when her serve works, her game flows. The serve is that much important for Ana. And she started to be more aggressive, trying to dominate points, which is what she has to do.

Since it's a first match and there were plenty of nerves involved, I won't be too hard on her. One thing I loved to see is how she had the perfect assessment of the match in her interview. She saw what was happening on court and what she was doing right or wrong, and that is crucial for her to improve.

Now let's hope Nole wins his tie.. because they haven't even practiced mixed doubles! :spit::lol: I'm sure it will be totally hilarious!

A win is a win I guess, but I want to see a better level vs. Justine. A very important match imo.

It's the last tie from the round robin group, to be played on thursday.. but still.. I agree, it will be a very important match. Ana will need to improve 100%, because Henin will be playing big points well.

Ana enjoy hers new (improved) movement, but without power attacks that only make points longer
In 2nd set complete different story :yeah: Ana control points since early start and dominate like she should to do. Only when things going wrong, Ana explore that better defense/movement. Ana is playing mixed doubles in Melbourne! :)

From her official website:
Ana is planning to enter the Mixed Doubles competition at the Australian Open later this month alongside compatriot Nenad Zimonjic. "Ziki", as he is known to friends, is the No.3-ranked doubles player on the ATP Tour and has won four mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.

Ana last played mixed doubles at a Grand Slam at the 2006 Australian Open with Novak Djokovic, when they reached the second round. Her first ever professional foray into mixed doubles came with Zimonjic a year earlier at the French Open.

Ana is currently taking part in mixed doubles at this week's Hopman Cup: the 23-year-old and Djokovic beat Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova and Andrey Golubev 7-6, 6-4 in their opening match yesterday.

And agreed. I also don't see any improvements.. Ana slimmed down but I think she was moving better and had better footwork in Bali.

The serve is back to total crap.. seriously.. the toss is out of control and she is tossing much higher than in Bali. Why oh why mess up with the serve so much again? It was good at the end of the season. :sobbing:

What an effort! :worship: Such an entertaining match, dont think I've ever had that much fun watching mixed doubles. Had me on the edge of my seat from the middle of the 2nd set! Should give a lot of confidence for Ana, she made some great passes and returns and her serve was alright I thought.

Ufff... definitely.. I think I'll be most interested in her attitude towards the match. Ana goes into matches against the big 4 (Kim, Justine, Serena and Venus) as if she has lost already a number of times. It's like she respects them so much she doesn't think she can win. I'm hoping she at least puts up a fight. Would be happy if she won a set.

My impression, based on all the laughing and joking that goes on,is that players aren't as patriotically intense over Hopman as they are for DC or FC.I'm sure they'd like to win but a loss doesn't appear to hurt as much judging by some reactions....

Though it's nearly impossible for a mere male mortal to read a woman's thoughts:lol:,I speculate that Ana MIGHT be using HC as a high-class tune-up,a chance to experiment a little bit while finding her 2011 rhythm: She's getting MUCH better prep than she would on the practice court, yet there's not heavy pressure to win...no real, major consequences for losing. As long as she focuses on improving her trouble spots, this could serve as an excellent lead-in to the short Aussie season

Finally, hats off to many of you for the Ana-Novak pics:hatoff::hatoff::hatoff:;some of them are simply freakin' awesome:cool:.I don't dare get my hopes up for this dream pairing and,in reality,it might even speed up Ana's arrival in Marriage-Motherhood if they got TOO close(prematurely halting her career:eek:)....Still,it's BIG-time fun escapism to see them smiling together like that:)

That's what I'm hoping for as well.. that Ana fights hard for the match. And hopefully serves better.

Ana's toss is much higher than it was at the end of last season, and that's something I can't understand. A lower toss is always easier to control. She actually had good rhythm on serve since Cincy.. now the toss is all over the place again. Some were even shocking bad.

Ana doesn't have a tennis brain.. maybe if he ever grows one, she can beat Henin. Today was just dumb tennis all around, playing to Justine's strengths.

BH DTL? Oh.. doesn't exist. Lob? What's that? High balls to a one handed BH? Why would anyone do that, right Nadal? :o Taking multiple game points? No.. it's more exciting blowing them. :o

After this match (as I've said already), Ana really needs a good draw at the AO so that she can work her way into the tournament. gaviotabr
Jan 6th, 2011, 10:23 AM
How can anyone be happy with such an awful match and show of lack of tennis brain?

Ana made over 30UEs. Sure.. Justine played well.. but how wouldn't she? Ana was playing to all her strengths.. every ball to her hitting zone. It's really not hard to hit great shots when all the balls are getting to you exactly where you want them to be.

It was dumb tennis all around... you know how many players can hit flashy forehand winners here and there? Most of the top 50.. that's not what Ana wants to be. Whenever you only play to your opponents strengths it's going to be an awful performance and clear show of not nknowing what to do on court.

Justine is short.. how many times was she glued to the net and how many times did Ana attempt a lob? Plenty of times and no lobs. Ana had about a handful of clear opportunities to pass, with all the time in the world, and all she did was hit the easiest shot to volley, shoulder high, CC, directly at Justine. People will say... well... Henin volleyed great.. I say, even I have great volleys receiving those shots. My tennis coach feeds me those kind of shots for me to warm up my volleys.. that's how easy they are to hit.

I keep thinking of Bali.. and there were some great loopy BHs in Ana's matches there. Those were the kind of BHs she had to use against Henin. Justine can't do anything with her BH, which is her best shot, when the balls coming at her are high and loopy. That's actually a normal thing among one handed players.. that's how Nadal beats Federer so often. On the other hand, Justine looooves a high paced short ball to her BH. She can hit winner after winner after winner when being feeded those balls. No need to say which kind of shots was Ana throwing at her. Same thing with the serve.. the most effective one against Henin is the kicker to the BH. That's how Stosur beat her at RG last year.

So Ana had no game plan whatsoever.. she wasn't trying to find and exploit Justine weaknesses, she was just brainless out there. She can afford to be brainless against lesser opponents, becaause Ana's forehand is so good it usually does the deal alone, without the brain. But then again, if she is only going to beat the lesser opponents, she will never be contending for big titles again. Will just be some so so top 20 player. If she wants to go toe to toe with the big time players and win big again, then Ana needs to learn how to see the game and apply a game plan. To look to throw her opponents off, not just close her eyes and hit the ball.

All that goes without saying that Ana will never beat good players again if she can't play well on the big points. Today she was awful in all of them. I think mostly that'ws because Ana has no belief against those players she considers great.. and that is a sure sign of a loser. If sshe wants to be a winner in that context she can't afford to have that much respect.

No.. Hopman Cup is some sort of glorified exho. Ana will eventually have to play Fed Cup to be able to play Olympics. But I think the rule says all she has to do is make herself available. I'm sure they are looking at it.. Ana won't jeopardize her participation in the Olympics.. I think it's one of the events she most wants to play, after all that happened in 2008.

She didn't give up, but she didn't put up a fight either. It was a fairly routine easy win for Henin. And a completely dumb match from Ana... just dumb tennis all around. That's the issue.

And all the importat points and chances wasted only show how Ana doesn't play these matches against big time players to win them. So whatever.. it's as bad as it is. She won't be a top player if she plays this stupid against top players. I don't think she wants to settle for being an average player.. so average and sucky is the same. She has to change her attitude towards the big matches.

I was totally expecting it as well.. but it was not the fact she lost, it was how she lost.. Could she have played any dumber? I don't think so.. that's as dumb as it gets.

What's worse.. even playing dumb she had lots of chances.. plenty of game points and break points wasted in some idiotic play. If she had just a tiny bit of game play and tennis brain it could've been at least competitive.

I totally agree with you, but I'm used to not to get my hopes too high, when she plays the likes of Henin, so I never expect her to play 'not dumb'.
Nevertheless, I want to believe every time she plays one of them, she learns something and that she can build on it, so eventually she can beat them, and with the little luck, it's gonna be on the big stage, when it really matters.

I'm not giving up on the idea she is able to play smart and successfully execute her game plan AT LEAST ONCE ! Lets see if I'm right.

Ana played dumb... she netted so many second serves :tape: While Justine hit many winners of Ana`s second serve

I don't think that was the issue though.. yes.. Ana had 7 DFs, and that is just TOO much. And Henin was always going to attack Ana's second serve.. I mean, any smart and talented enough player would try that.

What lost Ana the match wasn't this though.. all in all, Ana still had a bunch of BPs and GPs that she wasted and that could've changed the match a bit. It was Ana playing short and flat to Justine's BH, the exact way Henin likes it. It was the lack of a BH DTL.. so many times the DTL was all open, and Ana simply couldn't hit there. It was the lack of game plan, playing to Henin's strength, instead of taking those away from her. Just a dumb match all around, acompanied by bad attitude.. Ana already walked in like a loser. She doesn't have enough faith in herself, and that is what doesn't allow her to be a great player. All great players believe they are the best in the world. Ana doesn't.. she will always count 5 others in front of her.. which leads her to bow down when she plays them.
