We're gonna start!

Brisbane draw:

(6) Flavia Pennetta vs Roberta Vinci
Sara Errani vs Dominika Cibulkova
Daniela Hantuchova vs Anna Chakvetadze
Petra Kvitova vs (3) Nadia Petrova

First match of the season, always hard to predict. But in general, not a bad draw. She's defending her Auckland final this week;)
(considering their H2H, she should lose though ;) http://www.wtatour.com/headtohead/flavia-pennetta_2255881_6578/0,,12781~6578~8754,00.html funniest H2H I have seen;))

i love flavia, but results say that petrova is better than her: she has been slam semifinalist already in 2003 and then in 2005 plus several times she was in the qf, she won tier1 events she was top5 and in top 10 for more than 2 years (all results that flavia doesn't have), if flavia is in front in the h2h that's better for her, but if petrova is at 100% she can easily beat flavia, and as long as we don't know her condition in better don't use this kind of icons:haha:, that's not respectful

And just because Flavia owns the H2H, doesn't mean she's a better player;) (Venus?)

Every player has a way in which they can be beaten ;)
It must be difficult to make Nadia run, otherwise everyone would do it :p. She puts a lot of power on the ball, obviously, which makes it hard to put yourself in a position in which you can dictate play and the direction of the ball. Flavia, when fit, has good court coverage and is good at using the pace her opponent gives the ball, which must contribute to her being able to beat Nadia.

It's like when she plays Sam. Many players have trouble returning her serve and avoiding her forehand. Flavia somehow returns her serve with relative ease (remember LA 09? Sam was killing everyone, thanx to her serve, until she ran into Flavia) and from there on, is able to build the point and not let Sam rely on her strongest shot.

i totally agree with this post, but you were saying (not zamboni) that petrova is a scrub player rolling on your back like that:haha::rolls::haha::rolls: when you saw her as a possible flavia opponente, i just said that given her career, her results, her experience and given the fact that in her career she beated players like henin, clijsters, venus, serena, sharapova, safina, hingis, wozniacki, schiavone and dementieva, i don't see why she can't beat pennetta tomorrow and you act like she's someone like errani, i recognize the value of a player and i don't get blind because i'm italian and pennetta or schiavone are italian!:wavey:

From WTA site:

How did the stars of the WTA spend the off-season? In the lead-up to the Aussie Open, wtatour.com will be helping answer that question...

Flavia Pennetta had a stellar 2010, particularly in doubles, winning seven titles with Gisela Dulko, with whom she finished the year as the No.1 doubles team in the world. Here's the Italian trailblazer in her own words...

On her off-season training regime...
"My daily regime was pretty much the same as last pre-season: training, training, training! I always do two sessions in a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the morning I try to focus on fitness by doing gym and body activities like treadmill, bike and weights; in the afternoon I play tennis."

On time off...
"This pre-season was a bit short for me since after the Fed Cup final I had surgery on my left eye. I had to stop for two weeks, which was my only "relaxing". It wasn't a great way to relax, but I couldn't do it in a different way! At Christmas I went back home to my family. To be together with my sister and my friends and to eat so many delicious things my mother cooked was great!"

On 2010...
"With Gisela we really did something special! We began to play doubles together because we are very good friends but we didn't expect to be so good together on court... so game after game we are now the No.1 team in the world!"

On 2011...
"Pre-season training is very important because it is the time to work on faults and to analyze what must be done better in the new year. Together with Gaby, my coach, we decided to play fewer tournaments than in 2010. Statistics and media said that I was the player who played the most in 2010 and that I travelled so much, like three times around the world! I hope to do as great this year."

Well, now she has an extra week to train :p *sigh*

It's a Sexa interview.
She said that 90% she plays Olympic Doubles with Flavia next year. That they have been so much sad after loss with match points  in Beijing 2008 and that she believes they can win a medal in London.
However she said that they need to work together to prepair the event and that, for this reason, they will play more often together in doubles in 2012 and maybe in some tournament this year.

New fan signing in....be gentle with me!! ;)

I'm expecting Flav to have a decent year this year, too many 1st & 2nd round defeats last year, it's got to improve this year..no?

One thing I'm not happy with though is the MD she plans on playing with Potito! She finally says what her fans have been saying for ages....that she plays too many tournaments and is going to cut down this year. THEN SAYS SHE'S GONNA PLAY MD! Surely, if she wants to play MD with him at the Olympics, they can wait until NEXT year to play together in tournaments?

Anyway, whatever she does, I'll be cheering her on as always :D

Hi Tony :p

I don't mind that she's playing mixed. It should be a lot of fun:hearts: I just hope they treat it as fun and a sort of practice as well. And I don't expect them to go deep - Potito is no Marcelo Melo ;)
She does need less matches this year, but one or two mixed matches aren't gonna make the difference. She mainly needs smart scheduling, and lets not forget she wouldn't have played all that many matches last year if it weren't for the unexpected success in doubles.

Yeah, won't be so bad if she treats it lightly and has some fun :) I'm interested to see which tournaments she decides to pass on, this year. Hopefully for you she'll play Marbella but I've never understood why she plays that, and not Barcelona. IMO, Barcelona would be better scheduling (at least if she gets far in Miami again), plus she lives there. Guess it's because she's friends with Conchita Martinez ;)

Nice draw Flavia

Sorry but it's not an easy draw, yes she can go deep if she plays her best but she can also fall early! rodionova is not an easy first round at all, she could really loose in first round, hopefully not, then larsson is a dangerous player and peer is really strong and is getting always stronger, the stosur, who suffers flavia's game, but we are in australia and she will be super motivated, and then zvonareva, who suffers flavia's game as well, but their matches are always close so it's a matter of points. not the easiest of the draws but if she's ok she can do great things:wavey:

IMO this is one of the best draw Flavs could have! All the ballbasher, exept Kvitova and Safarova (that however have to win their marches), are in the upper part of the draw: Wickmayer, Wozniacki, Kuznetsova, Goerges, Petkovic, Azarenka, Rezai, Kanepi...
In the 3rd round it would be better meet Henin or Sharapova? Peer is in a decent form, but if Flavia plays quite well, she can win!!
Finally, the first round obiouvsily isn't easy, but she could play also with Groth, Goerges, Dulko, Peng, Vesnina, Halep, Jovanovski ecc..ecc...

So good luck Pennetta!!!!:)

well probably these days would be better a round1 vs safina than rodionova and a round3 vs sharapova than peer, but overall you are probably right, better don't aks too mutch to the destiny, the big names can always come back to victory any day, plus she avoids wickmayer, wozniacki, rezai and kanepi so, yes it's not a bad draw

I'm optimistic about her draw. She's got a good record against the 2 highest seeds in that quarter, never lost to Stosur and has beaten Vera 3 of the last 4 times they've played (or 4 from 5 now?)

Should beat Rodionova (hell, she better beat HER!!), and Larsson, then Peer, who she struggles against but I fancy her to beat her this time round :)

Anyway, I've told her on Twitter that I'm getting old and can't wait forever for her to win a Slam!! Asked her to win this one for me ;)That should be the clincher! lol

She will need to start the match well because most people there have no idea about tennis and will stop watching an aussie play when they are losing. Flavia was impressive today. Very solid, especially at the net. She kept working her way to the net which was impressive. Looked like she has slowed her first serve down a bit. She got 64% in in the first set (much higher than normal). I like that she is doing that because her second serve gets pounded and Rodionova did put a few short ones away. Dominguez Lino should not be a problem next.

Looked like she has slowed her first serve down a bit. She got 64% in in the first set (much higher than normal).Well, at least the statistics don't confirm that. Average was 158km/h on first, 130 on second serve. But maybe you are right for the first set, and then she paced it up in the second set - only 51% went in but at an incredible success rate of 91% !

The 2010 GS statistics are still online. Compared to that, she really paced up her cross serve to the advantage side. The rest hasn't changed (yet).

More agressive = good :)

And her mum is so right:o Eat, girl!

Attacking the net is the best gameplan against Peer. Both will retrieve a lot of balls and will not make a lot of errors but Peer will not attack the net. That's were Flavia has one on Peer. Saying that Peer returns much better than Flavia's first two opponents and getting to the net will be much harder. She will have to serve well, that's another key. To get to the net she has to be in control of the point and good serving will help the cause.

As for Flavia, the start was so so disappointing. There was nothing left of her gameplan, serve wasn't working at all, she made too many errors, all of it was just bad. Then she started fighting at 2-4 in the 2nd set, and that got her through. Somehow she put Shahar under enough pressure to get the break back, and along the way she found her game. In the third set she played much better than in the first :)
We should all thank Shahar for the 3 errors in the last game though:lol:

She won 3-6, 7-6(7-3), 6-4. Started the match so poorly. She must have been nervous, poor movement, serve and forehand. At 3-6, *2-4 down she saved a break point. That seemed to be the catalyst and she started finding her game. She clawed away to 5-4 up. She played a really poor service game at 5-5 to get broken. Peer then nerved up and allowed Fla back in. She played a great tiebreak. She hit a few sloppy forehands and Peer was zoning balls to that side but under the pressure she stood up. The third set was really even and both girls were hitting very well. Peer started holding back and stopped going for the lines. Stepped up at 3-3 winning 8 straight points with a mixture of awesome defense and offence to go 5-3. Tough hold by Peer meant Fla had to serve it out and she did it to love (Peer played poorly in the last game). Not as good as her comeback against Vera but still up there in one of her best comeback wins. So happy she mentally was able to tough it out. The forehand needs tightening and serve needs to be better. Great win, she deserved it. Her backhand down the line

Against Kvitova, points will be short, which somehow is exactly what Flavia wants :p Flavia, be smart, drink water, withdraw from doubles - remember what you said at UO 2009 "... I'm old"

Kvitova played really well against Sam. Gonna be really tough. Fla really has to step up to win or else it could be an ugly result. I think the head to head is irrelevant as Kvitova is a much better player than those first few matches and Fla was in bad form in the last one. I think she is going to lose :(

what a match:hearts::hearts:

we have seen 2 Flavs: until 42 Peer second set there was Penna2010...without a brain, too worried about what to do on court...

then, until the win, Flavietta has begun playing, attacking and taking her chances...the bravary so has been the key of the match...IMO this is the best single match of Flavia since the victory over Bepa at USO2009...:)

good luck against Petra;)

Played great at the beginning, but the serve really let her down in the third set. Also, Kvitova was able to play many balls in her comfort zone. Still a good effort from Flavia, but she very well could have won that match. :(

She was doomed when they got to that 3rd set. Kvitova had all the momentum. She really should have held serve at IIRC 2-3 in the second set. She was up 40-15 in that game and I think she missed a couple first serves. Then again you gotta give Kvitova some of the credit, she did hit two (or was it three?) consecutive return winners to make Flavia feel the pressure on holding serve.

DomenicDemaria
Jan 24th, 2011, 06:38 AM
Feel really gutted she lost. She started the match serving and playing really well. She was counter punching so well, hitting with depth and wrong footing Kvitova. She had a few half chances at the start of the second to break Kvitova. But after she dropped serve at 2-3 (led that game 40-15 and got broken) the momentum switched Kvitova's way. By the third set her shots lacked depth and her serve deserted her. Don't know whether it was nerves or fatigue or it could have been both. Kivtova was just too good, generally the aggressive player wins the match and that's what happened here. Kvitova cut down her errors at end but I felt Fla was not putting as much pressure on Kvitova to make her miss. Anyway I am not sad I spend $50 because I got to see a good tough match of tennis. Moving forward I have seen alot of positives this tournament to make me believe Fla will end the year in the top 20. Good luck in the doubles!

After a few hours sleep, I'm still annoyed, but to be fair, Kvitova is playing as well as anyone, it's not a terrible loss. It's just so frustrating that we can all predict exactly what will happen and for a while now, Flavia hasn't been able to break through her ceiling, so to say.
