Will Serena need a wildcard? Can she use protected ranking?

vaslav37
Jul 4th, 2011, 09:16 PM
even though Serena has dropped to 175 in the rankings surely she must have a protected ranking, Serena will get wildcards into all the pre-US Open events and the Open itself...

is the cut off date July 18th for the singles draw?

Any guesses what the cut offs for MD and QD will be?
I want to go to Qualies again so i want to be sure its worth it.

Serena will get the top 10 exemption almost every time. It's technically not a wildcard since it'd go to the next direct entrant. She entered Toronto and Cincinnati this way.

Serena entered Stanford directly (entry was before Wimbledon completed).

She will need to use a SR for US Open or WC...

Or is there any rules former GS Champs get IN?

For USO, she'll need PR or WC. I am hoping she will use her PR.

Will Safina play in US Open? I made a Early List, see Here: (http://www.caroline-wozniacki.info/comlistindex.html)

I expect Serena somehow will Enter and Kleybanova won't be ready...

What do You think about wildcards? I'm going with Rezai and Rogowska form France and Australia.
Hopefully there will be one for Craybas, Glatch and Stephens as well. USTA Favorite is already in the Main Draw, so I have no idea who will take three left wildcards, maybe three other best under-cut Americans? Riske, Hampton and Cohen. Or maybe another unranked player form nowhere, like last year's WC for Chelsey Gullickson... Anyway, what's with her?

brits in qualifying...

O'Brien is busy playing WTT instead of getting her ass down to challengers when she has to defend points from last year. She probably won't make it to NYC :tape:

I was actually thinking Caroline Garcia for the French wild card, but Rezai makes sense. Rogowska was the first Aussie that came to mind for me, with Dellacqua and Peers as other possibilities. Maybe even Rodionova if she doesn't get in on her ranking? Hopefully someone who's familiar with the thinking of the French and/or Aussie federations will chime in.

Chelsey Gullickson only got one because she was the NCAA singles champ. She lost to Jana Juricova in the quarterfinals at the NCAAs this year. Juricova went on to win the title, but she's from Slovakia, so no wild card for her. The USTA 18 & Under Nationals champion still gets one, though, which leaves five available.

Don't hold your breath on Craybas -- the USTA is way too worried about "the future of American tennis" to reward a veteran. Stephens, Hampton, Riske, Glatch, Beatrice Capra (based on what she did at the Open last year), and Lauren Davis are all more likely. The USTA will probably hold a playoff for the last spot again. Oh, and there is the Serena factor: she'll need a WC if, for some reason, she refuses to use a protected ranking.

Does Alona B have a SR?

anyone else other than Serena?

Presuming Serena (SR) Doi and Rodionova get in (for Safina, Anna CHak and Kleybanova) I'd say the Wildcards could look like this:

WILDCARDS
1 Sally Peers
2 Sloane Stephens
3 Beatrice Capra
4 Jamie Hampton
5 U 18 Champ:
6 Shelby Rogers
7 Aravane Rezai
8 Alison Riske

Davis is the other serious consideration.

Q WILDCARDS
1 Scholl, Chichi
2 Pegula, Jessica
3 Brodsky, Gail
4 Keys, Madison
5 Muhammed, Asia
6 Gibbs, Nicole
7 Puig, Jessica
8 Daria Gavrilova
9 Lauren Davis

I think the U 18 RU gets one? i'd say she would be one of the above anyhows

DOUBLES WILDCARDS
1 Riske –Hampton
2 Oudin-Vandeweghe
3 Falconi-McHale
4 Capra-Stephens
5 U 18 Champ:
6 Albanese- J Cohen
7 Brodsky-Glatch

Brengle has been supporting WTT. With Vandeweghe, McHale and Oudin not needing them, I think she might get one. Stephens and Hampton it thank are locks, and Brodsky is an interesting choice, although if one of the Stanford girls does well, they trump the UCLA star.

Even though there is no reason to expect it, I wold love to see someone like Van Uytvanck get one.

Zero chance for the players you mentioned. Last year all 6 discretionary WC went to USA players. The French Federation and Aussie Federation have one WC each

Yah. I don't have time to read all the posts now, but in case no one posted this yet:

"Misaki Doi of Japan, ranked No. 105, was the 104th and last player accepted directly into the women’s field of 128. Sixteen more players will gain entry through the US Open Qualifying Tournament, August 23-26, while the remaining eight spots are wild cards awarded by the USTA."

Jorn has got it right, as usual.

Last year the qualifying cutoff was 227 when the entry list came out, fell to 240 (due to players withdrawing) by the time the draw was made, and ended up at 245 when a couple late alternates got in. In 2009, it started at 223 and finished at 234. In 2008, it fell to somewhere around 250. So it varies from year to year, but that's a rough estimate of what to expect. You'd definitely want to be around the top 230 on Monday to feel safe.

Sachie Ishizu is only playing ITF's and most of them in Japan (2 in US and 2 in Mex in the beginning of the year, I guess because of the Tsunami)
Qiang Wang also only playing ITF's in Japan and China  but she at least won against Alicia Molik in Nov/10 :spit:

Can the organisers seed Serena as they did at Wimbledon, or do they go strictly by ranking?

Do they? Yes. Will they? I've been wondering about that myself. Going strictly by the rankings is the policy they've stuck to for years. Clijsters had to play unseeded when she came back (even though she was obviously a contender...and wound up winning the title). It might kick up a real firestorm -- especially with the player who gets bumped out of the top 32 -- if they suddenly abandon that policy. We are talking about the USTA, however, and they're not above doing really shady things to benefit American players. If you weren't following tennis back in 1996, when they got caught rigging the men's draw, you might find this article informative...

They may move Serena in the Seeding, but only if she's in the TOP 32 before the Draw. (Even i think its unlikely they move anybody...) She will need to win about 1200 points more in Toronto and Cincy together.

That's just a rule Wimbledon made up for its seeding craziness (which they have in turn broken).

Any Slam can do anything it wants regarding seeding.

Which is good. She'll get in with wild cards for 5 of the following: Riske, Craybas, Stephens, Glatch, Hampton, Scholl, Cohen, Weinhold, Brodsky. And then we aren't even considering withdrawals which there will be a few of for sure.

This week in Carlsbad we had so many retirements, some w.o... Have we got any updates about the players who had a problems in Carlsbad? I mean Tamira Paszek, Maria Kirilenko, Virginie Razzano, Dominika Cibulkova, Alla Kudryavsteva, and maybe Mirza & Vesnina (they retired in doubles). I heard also that Monica Niculescu got some serious injury from ITF Vancouver. I saw Cibulkova, Kirilenko and Vesnina in main draw in Canada and Razzano and Mirza in qualies so their start is pretty safe, but are they sure about their healthy? That's pretty strange to retire or give valkover and play next week or even few days later in qualies for the next tournament like never happened.
OK, what about Kudryavsteva, Paszek and Niculescu?
And what about Michelle Larcher de Brito, she had some terrible injury lately, has she comes back already?

Chris_G
Aug 12th, 2011, 05:43 PM
Yeah, it was Jana Juricova from Slovakia who won the NCAA singles this year, beating Chelsey Gullickson in the quarterfinals. By the way, that main draw wild card for the NCAA champion isn't even mandatory for Americans anymore. Amanda McDowell was the college champ in 2008 and only got a qualifying WC.

Three withdrawals between now and August 22nd isn't that unlikely, since we're talking about players on both entry lists. Anyone pulling out of the main draw at this point would be replaced by someone who's currently entered in qualies, so that would free up a spot for an alternate.

There are 8 WCs and she'll definitely be close...the problem is that not all of the 8 WCs are going to come from people that are in the qualy draw currently. For example Lauren Davis who just won the national 18s will take one of those WC and isn't in the Qualy list. She'll probably end up being 2-3 out of qualies and have to rely on further WDs to get in. Good shot that she'll make it though as there are always some WDs from qualies the few days before. It'll be interesting to see if she gambles to come to NY to give it a go.

Only if Capra wins playoff Miao doesn't get in as Broadsky and Cohen are already in Q,while Keys gets QWC anyway.:)

Miao is the 2nd Alt so 1 player must withdraw. If Keys wins playoff another American will take her place, but no alternate will go to the Q.

I heard that Kimiko is already in NY and trying to get ready for the US Open.
Of course she's not in the perfect shape but I think she'll try out.
If she was 20, she'll definitely WD but at the age 40, she'll give it a shot.
