Sydney will be tough, even to qualify :scared:
Agreed, she went down this route 2 years ago and got thrashed by Safina in the first round. Sydney always has a very, very tough field, I'm not sure this is the best approach. On the positive side, she is playing Brisbane, weaker field, chance to get some wins/confidence and then take on Sydney with hopefully a nothing to lose approach.

Q draw- brisbane

(2)Monica Niculescu (ROU) v Christina McHale (USA)
Mariya Koryttseva (UKR) v Rebecca Marino (CAN)
Lucie Hradecka (CZE) v Petra Martic (CRO)
Chanelle Scheepers (RSA) v (5)Sorana Cirstea (ROU)

I am all scared she plays sheepers tmrw as third match on court 2 so I think it will be like 14-15 brisbane time maybe a bit earlier

What a choker match! I nearly died in front of the live scores! :o

In the first set both players were more or less on the same level, but in the end it was Sori who was a little better and therefore won it. At the beginning of set two, like often before, Sori took a break lay quickly 0:4 behind...
At that point I thought it will end like the matches against Kusnetzova or Ivanovic last season with tons of errors and much frustration, but despite my thoughts Sori kept on fighting and came back to 4:5! :worship:
Unfortunately, Scheepers took the second with her own serve. In the third one Sori had (in spite of my fears) a good start, quickly a break in front. In contrast to that Sheepers hit lots of Double Foults and I thought it's over, but Sori once again showed that she likes suspence...
So she gamed away her leading position against a struggling opponent. In the end everything went fine again supported by Scheepers who hit DF 12 and 13 (on the match point) in the final service game.

All in all, an OK performance, except the beginning of the second set. She still has huge problems with her consistence, hoping that the reason today was the first match of the new season...

Now beat Hradecka on New Year's Eve night! :fiery:

Following the live scores was indeed nervewrecking. I really thought she would lose after bein 0-4 down in the 2nd set. It was going really fast at that time, but she came back. Also 12 DF from Chanelle. But glad she pulled through. Important win for her I think.

Nice win for Sorana because Scheepers can really get a lot of balls back & with Sorana's inconsistency, could have been a disaster. So I'm glad, Sorana managed to pull a tough one out. Keep it up Sorana!

Yes, I agree! Especially coming back from 0:4 was important for her and for me to see that she can still fight, though Scheepers took that set! :)

She also had problems with seizing her break balls! 7 out of 21!! :o
But these statistics could also mislead because she often needed several break points, but in the end broke her opponent in those service games.

Here a brief description of the match on the tournament's website:

Sorana Cirstea is also into the second round of qualifying after she outplayed Chanelle Scheepers in a drawn out match that lasted 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Cirstea looked to have everything under control taking out the first set 6-3, however, Scheepers crept back in during the second set, taking it out 6-4.

The last set saw both women working for every point and both requesting to speak to their coaches on several occasions as their games rose and fell. But it was Cirstea who eventually beat Scheepers 6-4.

“It’s the first match and it’s really exciting. I thought it was a good match. I fought ‘til the end; it was a good match and I am happy,” Cirstea said.

Cirstea is due to meet Lucie Hradecka, who was too good for Petra Martic, tomorrow

It looks like she was at least happy to win the match! She also mentioned her strong fight! She has to keep it up with more consistence on her serve!
Then she has good chances to beat Hradecka tonight! :)

The match was almost as bad to watch as I imagine it would of been following the live scores. It was a really rollercoaster match with both players doing their best to choke. fortunetly Sorana won, despite the trainwreck that was the start of the second set.It was amazing how much her play and attitude changed after talking to her coach during each set.

0-6 against Hradecka in the first set... :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:

After that I almost expected a double bagel. Because of that, the course of the match was at least some smaller surprise for me. We should give her some time. The break between two seasons isn't that long to expect miracles from her, but nevertheless she should have been able to beat Hradecka. But like often before, she completely slumbered away the first set and so, it was in the end impossible for her to come back.

It seems that there are still some mental problems left. She easily gets frustrated. Maybe because she knows that she can do better, that she was better or as often said, she cannot put into practice what she has shown in the sessions before. She needs to cool down, get her temper under control and focus on the match. Unforced errors happen to every player in the match, but most top players don't get agitated by that. What I still cannot understand is the fact that apparently noone before recognized those mental problems or didn't help her, though the Adidas team has a very good reputation.

We will see how it will proceed in Sydney, but the qualification there is clearly tougher than this one...
Maybe it would have been better to start the season with some ITFs, but at the moment there aren't any bigger ones, so it's the way it is.

so i just got the energy to log on after an exhausting day at the tennis. pretty disappointing result for sorana, especially the first set. She did make quite a few errors in the first set and she was just being bullied around the court by Hradecka but from the stats i saw and watching the game, its not like she played horribly, she still got 60% of her first serves in. The second set was better with Sorana being more aggresive, whie the third set could of gone either way. Once Sorana had gone down the break in the third set she still had her chances, however, one shocking line call from the umpire cost her a shot at breaking back. A shot from Hradecka was out by a mile and they called it in which led to Sorana sarcastically asking the umpire if they thought the ball was out after she hit a winner down the centre of the court in the next point. She then refused to shake the umpires hand after the match which is understandable given his performance, especially on a crucial point. It seems everytime I see Sorana play she is a victim to bad umpiring.

This is ridicoulous, no it's sad, very sad.. :bigcry:

Whenever I thought that she made a big step into the right direction (beating Schiavone at Eastbourne, Dushevina at Sydney...), she disappoints me again with such cruel performances. OK, some smaller power swings are absolutely normal, but this is just :weirdo:

Really a bit of a let-down after 2 great wins. But her serve just didn't work it seems as she only had 1st serve rate of 35%. Also Jovanovski saved 7 break points too so maybe could have been closer.

Still she had 2 wins this week, which after last years form was more than most of us expected. So hope she takes the positives from this and gets more confidence :)

Yes, I would wish her a win, too because she has to defend Round 2 there and i don't want to see her again out of Top 100.

But especially the match against Dushevina showed that she has still a lot of potential, considering her muscular problems. She had only 50% of first serves and still won in straight sets. Let's imagine she would have been fit...

But these smaller injuries always throw her back in her development! Last year it was above all her ankle which hurt. These are all explanations why she tends to broke down the longer the match lasts. Her serves always become weaker then and also her movement on the court is negatively influenced by that. All this, together with the frustration of knowing that she could do better in healthy conditions, make it difficult for her to play and win the games how she wants to.

We should hope for a soon recovery! Then the good results will follow again! :)

She is #95 at the moment and therefore she should be qualified for the main draw, anyway! Especially because of the withdrawals from many other players ranked higher than her. ;)

Why??????!!!!!!! Sori <3

(10)Shahar Peer def. Sorana Cîrstea 6:3 6:2

She played far better than the result is. Some of the smashing returns, the fire on court and the spirit of never giving up glimmered for some parts of the match. That's not the way a #95 plays! :)

If she keeps this form up, her ranking will soon improve. A run at the tournaments of Memphis or Acapulco is more than possible! :yeah:

totally agree with you guys... that match was much more closer than the result shows... I saw Sori last year in three matches but none of her performance was like todayīs one by far... she played really really well and I was very suprised with the way she played... was very agressive and never gave up, worked and fought hard... she doesnīt have to be ashamed... unforutnately she didnīt take her opportunities to break Peer but I am very satisfied with her performance... if she continues in this way of playing she will climb up the rankings very soon because today we could see her potential and talent she has and today she showed she doesnīt belong to where she is at the moment... hope her confidence is back and she can forget the terrible last season... wish her all the best in the rest of the season because she must go higher!

Langers
Jan 20th, 2011, 11:39 AM
I walked into the match saying to myself that she'd win 5 games. And that's exactly how many she won and yet it was a LOT closer than that, and she played so much better than the scoreline reads. It's funny because I read your comments and you sound exactly like I do. Honestly, I was pleased with the way she played and I can safely say that if she continues to play like that, her ranking will improve significantly.

The first set was great tennis, she played really well. She was hitting some stunning winners, she was really spirited, and she had so many chances to make it a much closer set. She had 7 or 8 break points, and it really should've been a lot closer. She just couldn't capitalise on her chances, it was so frustrating for me I wonder how agonising it must have been for her.

She received an injury time-out, can't remember whether it was early in the second or at the end of the first set. Fair amount of strapping around her midrif, don't think it's anything too serious, she didn't seem to be effected by it. In the second again she had chances but couldn't take them, the wheels fell off a bit towards the very end, but up until that point it was a well fought match.

Good signs I think, just continue to work hard, push herself to improve and her ranking will go upward. I'll post a few pics when I return on Sunday. :)

The tapes were obviously for preventional reasons because of the muscular problems in the stomach region. This was the reason why her first serve stats against Jovanovski in Sydney were this horrible...
