PARIS, France - Switzerland's Patty Schnyder announced Saturday she is retiring from professional tennis and ending her highly successful 17-year career. Winner of 11 WTA singles titles, Schnyder achieved Top 10 ranking success, going as high as No.7. She was ranked in the Top 10 for 94 weeks.

"It's time to close this amazing chapter of my life," the 32-year-old Schnyder said. "This very emotional decision makes me thankful and proud of all the moments I have been able to share on and off the court with fans from all over the world and with the champions and legends from many decades."

"Patty has displayed excellence and leadership both on and off the court for many years," commented Stacey Allaster, Chairman & CEO of the WTA. "She has been a great ambassador for women's tennis and made an important contribution to the growth of the sport as a long-time member of the Players' Council. Patty will be truly missed by her fellow players and the fans. We wish her the best of luck and hope that she remains close to the women's game."

Schnyder turned professional in 1994 and won her first WTA title in 1998 at Hobart. She holds a career win-loss record of 552-361 and has reached 27 career WTA finals, winning her most prestigious title in 2002 at Zürich.

This year's Roland Garros marked Schnyder's 59th career Grand Slam appearance, sixth on the all-time list of Grand Slam participants in the Open Era. She achieved her greatest Grand Slam result at the 2004 Australian Open by reaching the semifinals, losing to Kim Clijsters. Schnyder is a six-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist. One of the most consistent players over the last decade, Schnyder was ranked in the year-end Top 50 for the last 14 years.

Schnyder qualified for the season-ending WTA Championships on three occasions - in 1998, 2002 and 2005. Honoring her home country of Switzerland, Schnyder contested 37 Fed Cup ties and helped her home team reach their only final appearance to date in 1998. The Swiss standout also represented her country in three Olympic Games in Atlanta, Athens and Beijing

It's sort of tough because Patty was the reason why I decided to learn tennis even at a late age. I can't say I've been a fan of tennis since I was I kid. I was maybe 15 when I really started to appreciate the game. But I remember the first time I say Patty on tv. I was just captivated by her style of play. I was so amazed, and is still amazed, by the amount of spin she puts on the ball, the angles she creates, her great disguise, and speed on the court. I must also point out that one of her trademarks is her drop shot, which I think is the best on the tour and it will be pretty hard to top that. I saw Patty play a couple more times on tv and that's when I thought to myself, "this is it, this is the game I'm going for" and ever since, I've been trying to pattern my game to Patty's (except that I'm not left-handed). So, it just feels incomplete without Patty playing anymore... she really has been and still is, an inspiration.

Oh... so this is yours? Haha

I'm glad we both like Jankovic. At least, there's still someone who we commonly cheer for.

But anyway, I won't forget all the roller coaster rides Patty has taken me to... hahaha

There are not enough youtube videos of her

This was the last great performance from her imo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO5ucndqjKY&feature=fvst starting at 4.00

I enjoyed her match against Wozniacki in Charleston, but she was too hit and miss.

Her best win (and tournament) of 2011 given the h2h http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vt-3qkBjtY

I will never forget the Peppermint Puzzle. ;)

Seriously, give her some time to find a new direction in life (maybe coaching for SUI Tennis, doing some TV commentary, whatever).

Animal doctor:worship:,a job at once profitable and dedicated.:drool:That is what I used to dream of,since I love animals so much, but I am not a cut out for it,I have problem with injection and wounds, which an animal doctor is supposed to deal with everyday:tape:

I was wondering if there were any commercials or something else Patty features or dabbles in,released among German-speaking countries:confused:

I'd guess you mean that she'll train for that (becoming a veterinarian takes several years) and perhaps work for such a doctor in the meantime, perhaps as part of her training. I know she had dogs growing up and then 2 cats (Mister and Gizmo) as an adult, though sadly (based on age) one or both has probably died in the last few years. :awww: Of course she may get (or have gotten) new Peppermint Pussycats, especially as she won't be traveling all the time now. As an animal lover myself, I applaud her career choice. :)

By the way, Is her book on English or German?

While there was an English section of the famous website for it, I doubt that by late this year there'll be enough demand for an English version. (Maybe more for a French translation anyway).

Incidentally, it may be more of a combination book, where Peppermint Patty and Herr Hofmann in effect write different chapters. (I can't wait 2C if his go after me more than vogus, or the other way around). ;)
