Erika is on fire atm :). She's in the final of Wellington, its the 4th final out of 5 tournaments and she could win the third now :)
She has nothing to lose against Kostova !
So let's cheer for Yurikas younger sister :hearts:

Erika sprained her left ankle playing the Japanese indoors championships  According to her blog she's getting an MRI today...hopefully its nothing too serious. Just like Yurika getting injured last year when at her best ranking :sobbing:

Phil=)
Jun 4th, 2011, 09:18 AM
After her injury she already won a 25 K in Japan again a week ago :hearts: !
She also reached 3 QF's before without being in good shape again ( 2 in Japan, 1 in the USA )
Unfortunately she lost a close match against Doi in Paris an missed the oppurtunity to get 40 points again but she'll still be on a CHR of 158 on Monday :worship: , congrats !
Does anyone know if she plans to play Wimby Q's ?

juki
Jun 4th, 2011, 01:13 PM
Yes she will play Wimbledon, but no warmup though  After Wimbledon she is entered in a 25k clay tournament in France. I think like last year she'll spend a month playing 25ks in France/Germany.

Also, I think it might be a good idea if there is just one thread for both Sema sisters ;)

Erika won her 1st round match in Wimby qualies :bounce: 64 64 against Vrljic. :)

Next is either Beygelzimer or Soler-Espinosa, not a horrible draw on grass! Beating Erakovic in 3rd round would probably be too much to hope for though.

I checked Erika's match out today. I was really interested to see her live, I'd never seen her before. Here are a few scattered notes.

As the score reflects, she played really well. Her main issue seemed to be that she lacked the power, but made up for it with real fight, engaging in many really long rallies from the back of the court which often ended with Erika tiring Vrljic out. She also seemed to struggle with the Croat's backhand slice alot, and some of the spins thrown at her, and like most Asian players kept hitting the ball flat and reasonably deep in the court. She did have trouble closing both the first set and the match out, needing a bit of help in the first set, wasting several chances in a long deuce game. She got broken as well in the final set when she was up 5-2, if memory serves. But she showed alot of fighting spirit and never gave up, the crowd which had gathered to watch the match seemed to support her more than Vrljic and applauded her shots more and offer some words of encouragement.

I was also really impressed with her work ethic, after the match, she spent over half an hour running laps around the grounds which was pretty interesting.

Sorry about how scattered and random the above is. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. :D

Kind of disappointing.

juki
Jun 17th, 2011, 02:40 AM
Thanks for the report Sugi! Erika doesn't have the weapons to really challenge top-100 players right now, but she has improved so much over the last few years. A few years ago her reputation was that of a more purely defensive player, and she is definitely trying to impose more and more on her ground strokes.

In her blog after her loss to Soler she wrote that she was disappointed how passively she played in the key points. She definitly realizes what she needs to do to keep improving.

So here is Erika's upcoming schedule:

Next week: 25K Perigueux
June 27: 25k Denain
July 4: 100K Biarritz (3 out of MD)

Hopefully Erika can get into Biarritz MD, nice to see her playing a 100k!

Phil=)
Jun 20th, 2011, 05:45 PM
25 K Perigueux:

(1)Erika Sema (JPN) v (Q)Jade Suvrijn (FRA) 64 67(5) 63

Nicely fought after she lost the 2nd set. Her half is pretty weak i think she can rech the QF / SF without problems.
But you never know with Erika on clay though.
Keep going and winning Erika ! :bounce::wavey:

After some bad losses in Europe Erika fought to win her first round match in Contrexeville ( 50 K ) :hearts:

Erika SEMA (JPN) (8) defeated Celine CATTANEO (FRA) 6-4 3-6 6-1 ;)

Today she'll play against Kiki Bertens.
Very tricky opponent but not unbeatable

(8)Erika Sema (JPN) d. Kiki Bertens (NED) 63 64

Wow great win :hearts::hearts:
This is her most convincing win since Wimbledon and it seems she's getting used to the clay now ;)
Next opponent will probably be Renata Voracova, this could be a very long match and Erika will have her chances too.

juki
Jul 14th, 2011, 02:24 PM
Great to see Erika win, she seemed to be getting pretty depressed with her singles results the last few weeks on her blog. She's playing another 100k next week in Bucharest, then going home. Hopefully she can pick up some more points and make this extended European clay schedule work out.

Erika has been doing awesome in doubles lately :yeah:
She always does well with South American doubles partners

A win is a win :).
She'll have her chances against Vigdany or Camerin but you never know with Erika and the clay. Some suprising results and some bade losses.
Would be very nice to see her in a QF of a 100 K on clay.
Keep going. :bounce:

Interview with Erika at BCR Open:

Erika Sema – Fifth week in Europe

A presence that stood out on the Bucharest clay, the 22 year-old Japanese from Tokio achieved two victories, one in the singles and one in the doubles main draw, with Raluca Olaru. Thursday she flies back to the “Land of the Rising Sun”, with the thought of coming back to Romania next year.

How come you chose to come here at thousands of kilometers distance?

Well, it’s not exactly like that. It’s now five weeks since I have been in Europe: Wimbledon, four weeks in France, and after that I came here. So, not from very far away. Now, I’m going home.

But, still, why precisely BCR Open Romania?

Because it’s a $100.000 competition, so it’s major tournament. I haven’t been here before so I really wanted to come. An it was pretty interesting.

How do you find Bucharest?

I like it. People are so nice, but I didn’t go out, I only stayed in the hotel. And I liked the hotel. But it’s very hot, just like in Japan. But I came From france, where it was chilly, so it was difficult for me to adjust.

You were a few points away from entering the doubles semifinals, with Raluca Olaru...

We fought beautifully. But I think that we should have been more aggressive, to advance to the net more and, also, to play cross more.

How did you choose a Romanian as a partner and why Raluca?

Raluca…She is a nice girls and she plays well. I hope to play with her again. She came to me to ask me to enter the doubles draw together: we knew each other since we were juniors, we were about 17 and we kept in touch since then

Thanks for the interview :D

Unfortunately Erika lost in R2 to Camerin, but a nice week for her. I hope she has a well earned rest back home now before the US Open.

juki
Jul 23rd, 2011, 08:16 PM
Erika's not getting much of a rest, playing next week at 100k in China. She'll be a top seed in the weaker field so there is a chance at some BIG points if she is playing well, which it sounds like she was in Bucharest. Yurika will be their also :D

Phil=)
Aug 4th, 2011, 10:12 AM
Unfortunately she lost her 1st round in Bejing and misses a chance for some nice, big and easy points :( !
But her opponent Pavlovic already advanced to the QF's.
Better luck next time Erika ;)

juki

Erika is playing Sharon Fichman. Interesting matchup, both very consistent. I think Erika is the better grinder though, and she usually gets pumped up against opponents who grunt/scream/etc. The serve will probably be important.

Good luck Erika!!! :D

Mandy is a decent match-up for Erika. Mandy can't hit past her, but she will try and be the dictator, and that's not really her game. There might be lots of longer, hard fought points in the match. I'm not getting my hopes up though. From her blog, Erika seems to be quite understandably tired from all the tennis lately. Hopefully she can find the energy to outlast Mandy from the baseline.

And so convincingly! Next will be Cetkovska or Kimiko. Keep fighting Erika!

This will mean so much to her. She was never really considered a talented player, but worked so hard, and was so determined and now she's won a WTA main draw match (after having to qualify!). I hope this just motivates her even more for the future. Top-100 is possible!

juki
Oct 22nd, 2011, 05:29 PM
Actually she isn't taking a week off at all, playing Australian 25ks the next two weeks :tape: She said on her blog she is packing to leave already.

I get she has these points to defend from last year, but she really doesn't need to play these. She should still easily be around 130 with these points off. She actually withdrew from Taiwan 100k+H, which she would have been seeded at, to play in Australia. She should have rested a week, then went to Taiwan in good form. Or she could have stayed in Japan for next weeks 25k, then gone to Taiwan. I'm not sure I get going to Australia just to play 25ks.

Oh well, hopefully Erika is energized for Australia, not many challenges in the draw.

:o I just overlooked the EL of the ITF in Japan next week and was glad that I didn't saw her and now she's playing Australia again?:o
She should have rested one week to play in Taipei. With winning 1 or 2 matches there she would have defended all of her points. I'm scared that she waistes her time in Australia now because she can only lose points and energy there...

(1)Erika Sema (JPN) d. Monique Adamczak (AUS) 1-0 Ret.
Not the way you want to win a match but still happy that Erika is in the SF ;) and quick recovery to Monique though.
Toughest opponent of the tournament is now awaiting her in the SF. Good luck against Olivia Rogowska Erika :hearts:

Erika already reached the QF of Mount Gambier :) . She had to play 2 matches today because of rain delays and she seems very tired because she won them both in 3 sets. I wish her the best of luck against Peers but it won't be easy and a loss wouldn't be that bad ;)
Keep going Erika :hearts:

Erika has fought amazingly to tie the match against Riske 4-6 7-6 :hearts:

Sidenote: the match is played indoors because of rain so another big advantage for the american. ;)

juki
Jul 9th, 2012, 01:27 AM
Impossible to predict what will happen here. Alexa can be terrible or amazing, and Erika will be dealing with her nerves. It really can go either way. It would be so huge for Erika to win this one, to finally make her WTA breakthrough would give her so much confidence.

C'mon Erika :cheer:

Some of my pictures from what I saw of her match vs Strycova. She wasn't impressed with Ted Watts, the umpire and told him in the second game of the match that he needs to 'pay more attention.' It is always a lot of fun watching Erika play.

So great seeing Erika beat Rodionova in a tough 3 set-match at Wimbledon. Really unexpected considering her rough form lately, and great that she could pull through in the end after losing MPs and failing to hold serve in some key games. :D

R2 - Witthoeft def. Sema 4-6 6-1 6-4

A wasted opportunity, but Erika has undoubtedly improved in leaps and bounds recently.

I was watching Erika's epic win yesterday and it was really quite something. Her positivity and unwillingness to be affected by Rodionova's gamesmanship wound her up more. After breaking in the final set, she pumped her fist directly at Rodionova at the change of ends. An MP was wasted at 5-3, then 5-4. She then had 3 more chances on the Rodionova serve at 6-5 and on her 4th, Rodionova's forehand hit the netcord, falling into Sema's court. On her fifth, and final match point she took it and was visibly elated, yet exhausted.

Quite a large crowd had gathered on the grassy bank to watch and they all seemed very taken by Erika and gave her a lot of support.

I was just reading Erika's blog over the past few days, from what I gather she has been ill and was quite depressed over her results in her US trip and at Nottingham.

However, the win over Rodionova has given her some confidence back and she is hoping to next participate at the 75k in China.

Unfortunately Erika lost in two straight albeit tight sets.

Erika's form has been disappointing this summer, so she's done pretty well here at the US Open and got some important points for her ranking.
