April 1-6, British Covered Courts Championships, London, England (Wood)
Venue: Queen's Club

Draw=2

FI: Charlotte Cooper d Henrietta Horncastle 9-7 6-1.

CR: Charlotte Cooper d. Edith Austin (holder) 6-4 3-6 6-1

[From American Lawn Tennis]
The All-Comers final was on a Thursday. This was a new venue for this event, which had previously been held at Hyde Park, which had only 1 indoor court. Chattie Cooper was belwo form for much of the first set, missing routine shots, especially volleys, a weapon that is usually her forte. 'Horncastle, on the other hand, has made distinct improvement since last season. Her returns are much more severe, besides being well-laced, and she possesses a fairly strong backhand."

Cooper won a hotly contested final, only gaining the upper hand when she went out to 4 nil in the third set. During one thrilling point in the second game she dropped her racquet then picked it back up to reach a ball. Austin then sent it over the baseline. "The winner played a capital game, and showed much better form than in her other math (vs Horncastle)." ALT noteed the frequent volleying, and "on several ocassions Miss Cooper brought off a very telling smash."

From "Pastime", April 3, 1895: "Among the harbingers of spring must be numbered the Covered Court Championship meeting, held annually in March or April at the Queen's Club. The present occasion is the sixth since its institution in 1890, and it is marked by one novel feature – the holding of the [men's] singles championship. The Hyde Park Court has hitherto been the scene of this event, which was founded in the year 1885. In those days the Hyde Park court was the only covered court existing which had specifically been built for the practice of the genre, and consequently the meeting attracted good and fairly numerous entries.

"Since the erection of the Queen's Club courts, however, players have to some extent forsaken their old haunt, and in consequence the entries at Hyde Park have for some years past been very meagre – in quantity at all events. The Hyde Park authorities have undoubtedly acted wisely in negotiating with the Queen's Club for the transfer to the latter of the single championship and challenge cup, which will be therefore this year be played for for the first time in the West Kensington courts."

Today's Woman had a piece on this event. Entries were smaller than usual, but crowds were large and fashionable.

Louisa Martin is unable to play in the singles event for an unspecified reason, but plays ladies’ doubles with Florence Stanuell and mixed doubles with George C. Ball-Greene.

The Misses Cooper wore "black serge skirts with blue blouses', which the writer considered most becoming.

Originally thought to be the first Bohemian Championships for women, Mark Ryan has discovered that this was in fact the second edition of the event for women.

Bohemia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at this point in time. Hedwig Rosenbaum was from Prague in Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic). Rosembaum went on to further success, while the winner "Kara" (nee Karolina Maria Olga Chotkova) von Nostitz had a series of five sons from 1887 to 1900, probably effectively ending her tennis career. Kara's sister Sophie later wed Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne.

This tournament had not been held since 1891.

Mrs E Nevill (nee Mabel Grant) was a great South African champion visiting England in 1895. The adjustment to grass and a different level of competition must have been severe. Mrs Neville played an event at Hull in June but lost every game. "Unsurprisingly was greatly upset at this", wrote her husband.

From "Pastime", July 3, 1895: "For the new tournament at Bristol an arrangement had been made with the committee of the county ground at Ashley Down, Bristol, for the use of the cricket ground during the week. Ten capital courts had been marked out without actually interfering with the cricket pitch. The entries all round were very large, and the quality of the players was good."

From "Pastime": August 21, 1895: "The tie took place on Saturday morning, and both in the stands and in the half-circle, where the spectators sit on the other side, every available inch was crowded. A more enthusiastic crowd has hardly ever been seen at a tennis tournament, but it needs must be said that apparently they gave more applause to Miss Jackson's winning aces than to Mrs Hillyard's. Why this should be so it is hard to say, as a more sportsmanlike – or shall we say more sportswomanlike – action than Mrs Hillyard's – the holder of the cup – in inviting Miss Jackson to stay with her during the tournament, and chaperone her for the week, it would be hard to find. If Miss Jackson had not been playing at the meeting, the Duke of Devonshire's Cup would have been Mrs Hillyard's own property, as she would have most certainly won it for the third year in succession."

Draw note: Miss Morgan could=E Morgan, who features in many 1895 English draws.

*Note that there is some mystery surrounding this event from 1895 to 1897. Many sources list no winner. . An article from te San Francisco call on September 7 declared as of that day only two ladies had entered the event to challenge Bee Hooper. The names given were Miss Mitchell and Miss Martin-both from Reno, Nevada. An articlef from the same paper then reports on the chalenge round, calling Marion Jones the only competitor in this event to chalenge Hooper. This suggests that both Martin and Mitchell failed to show or defaulted. The Call went into delightful detail about both ladies. "On one side of the net was pretty Bee Hooper, a typical summer girl in her white straw hat, pink waist and white dick shirt, on the other hand was a young girl not yet in long skirts and with a briad down her back. She was unkwon to most of the spectators, but before many exchanges had been made "the little girl", as she was immediately dubbed, became a great favorite and her every scoring stroke was greeted with applause." The society crowd completely filled one of the long grandstands to watch a match with many interesting rallies.

Would it be possible for you to check back over your work when you're finished, and maybe correct a few things? Or maybe plan it in advance? I notice you jam some of the results in under the month(s), but you leave a gap in between the month and the results in some other cases, e.g. April, where things look a bit neater as a result.

Directly under "Late June" you have [color=black] [font=verdana]. To me, that looks out of place there.

Finally, I did separate off individual results and sections in the results I submitted and which you are directly copying and pasting, but when there are other results, e.g. not submitted by me, you don't separate them off from each other, e.g. in "Jan-March" above. If you did, it would give a cleaner look to things overall.

I appreciate you're probably always in a hurry when you do what you do. That might also be why you moved straight from 1893 to 1895.
--

By the way, I just use my own particular format for reasons of consistency. Rollo uses many, many different formats, if you want to call them that. You appear to be more a multiple format type of person too.

Hi Mark,
I skipped from 1893 to 1895 because 1894 was already completed by Rollo, I believe.
You definately have a better eye for format than I do and I think consistency in that may matter more to you than to me. It's funny how what appeals to one eye does not even register for another. I'm afraid I don't even know what you mean by separating off results in Jan-Mar above.

You are correct that I did hurry off when I finished. I'm not even sure how the color and font marks crept in there and I will take them out.

* From "Pastime": August 21, 1895: "The tie took place on Saturday morning, and both in the stands and in the half-circle, where the spectators sit on the other side, every available inch was crowded.

Last April 27, on 1897 thread, I have written down that Georgina Wilson, not Gertrude, is Mrs Baylay, and that maybe Gertrude is an inexistent name...
