1928 Summary
Helen Wills powers were on full display as she wins the French Championships, Wimbledon and the USA Championships without losing a set. Surely she would have won the Grand Slam if she had come to Australia. Below her are Wimbledon constant finalist de Alvarez and USA finalist Helen Jacobs. Daphne Akhurst though wins her third Australian title and tours Europe reaching the SF of Wimbledon (defeating Jaobs) and winning the German Championships over Aussem. Great Britain defeats USA (4-3) in the Wightman Cup, played at Wimbledon, but Wills wins all her matches.

Draw Notes:
Mrs Bolton also listed as Mrs Boulton
Birdie Bond=Mrs E Bond
Floris Conway = Floris St-George (Mrs Roland Conway)
Some papers list Mrs Rischbieth nee Eileen Beresford ) as Rischbith.
Mrs O Waddington=nee Millie Mitchell.
Molesworth, Messurier, Weston and Bond were nominated by their states but apparently not seeded. There were 8 men's seeds in contrast to four women's seeds.
---------------------------------------------
Summary:
The women had the courts to themselves until late in the first week because of the arrival of the French Davis Cup team. Thus when the women's singles fial was held on the 27th the men were still early in their event.
Akhurst's return to the Australian titles emphasized the gap between her and the other Australian women players. With Boyd being superior to the other women she easily made the finals again, however lost the final to Akhurst 5-7 2-6. It was actually a keen contest until 2-all in the second, when the strain began to tell and Boyd's game fell away dramatically. The local paper reported that Akhurst "repeatedly returned serve across court for an outright winner". Akhurst completed her second triple crown, taking the doubles with Boyd and the mixed with Jean Borotra, who also won three titles that year.
A controversy occurred in the semis when O'Hara-Wood was footfaulted several times. Many felt it was unfair to enforce this rule (apparently not called previously) at such an important stage in the event.

Elizabeth Ryan gets her finger caught in train door and withdraws from the event. At first docters fear it may have to be amputated, potentially ending her career. Ryan had dominated the Riviera season up to her accident. in fact the injury is not as bad as first thought, and Bunny is back on the courts in a few weks.

Draw notes:
LaFaurie=married name of Jung
The NYT lists Anthony as "Helen". She is an Aussie playing mixed with a fellow Aussie. The RG site
lists her as "Julie" Anthony from the US-a player I have not heard of being active in the 1920s.
---------------------------
A crowd of 8,000 comes to see Helen win her semifinal, a record for a tennis crowd in France. This is the first year of a new stadium at Roland Garros-the site of the French Open to this very day.
when the site opened in 1928 there were only 5 courts on the site.
Hundreds of fans stayed to watch a 3 hour-long struggle between Aussie Bickerton and American Anderson. Both were on the verge of collapse after the 43 game match.

June 15-16 Wightman Cup, London, England (Grass) Great Britain d United States 4-3
Venue: Wimbledon, Centre Court
Captains Eleanor Goss (US)
Day 1 (3,500 attend)
Helen Wills (US) d Phoebe Holcroft-Watson 6-1 6-2
Eileen Bennett d Molla Mallory (US) 6-1 6-3
Ermyntrude Harvey/Peggy Saunders d Eleanor Goss/Helen Jacobs 6-4 6-2
Day 2 (8,000 attend)
Helen Wills (US) d Eileen Bennett 6-3 6-2
Phoebe Holcroft-Watson d Molla Mallory (US) 2-6 6-1 6-2
Helen Jacobs (US) d Betty Nuthall 6-3 6-1
Eileen Bennett/Phoebe Holcroft-Watson d Penelope Anderson/Helen Wills (US) 6-2 6-1
The NYT attributes the poor attendance on day 1 to "the sparing advertsing" of the All-England Club. A record 8,000 show on day two. When Jacobs upsets Nuthall with ease as Betty serves "at least" 12 double faults with her new overhead service.
The Cup comes down to the last match. What could have been a thrilling finish ends tamely, as Anderson-Wills get trounced.

Note from Newmark:
Around this time the German lawn tennis player Baroness Paula von Reznicek is barred from all lawn tennis competitions by the German Lawn Tennis Association for a period six weeks for "boxing the ears" of another lady during the recent German Lawn Tennis Championships in Hamburg. The ban had originally been for a period of three weeks. The lady whose ears were boxed was probably Cilly Aussem's mother.

Thanks guys, above edited in. For Queensland in August, the thread had Cox beating Molesworth by those scores. Can anyone confirm which is correct?
I also pasted in what we have of the Grand Slams for 1928, although they still need editing for format as well as first names etc.
