View Full Version : Serena To Dump PUMA & Hop Aboard The NIKE Ship

Oct 18th, 2002, 06:36 PM
Tennis Magazine, Page 25:

Serena Williams has dominated Venus Williams on court recently, and next year she may one-up big sis off it. Serena's shoe and apparel contract with Puma is about to expire, and industry insiders say that she's on the prowl for a deal, perhaps with Nike, that would blow Venus' $40 million Reebok package (heretofore the most money for a woman ahtleet) out of the water. Nike had no comment.

I think she may stay with Puma. They gave Serena her own line, didn't they?

Serena wore Reebok in expos as a kid and until 97 or 98 when she played a few tournaments like Chicago and Sydney where she wore Nike.

I dont think so, Linsay is still the Queen of Nike after Seles

If serena joins Nike she will be their premiere tennis athlete. Period. Why can't you accept that lindsay just isnt as popular as serena. its just a fact.

How much does lindsay get for her nike deal?

Oct 18th, 2002, 08:32 PM
yeah she got with puma at the start of 98, that first outfit was horrible but she improved fast(I am awared not everybody agrees;))

Oct 18th, 2002, 08:33 PM
serena is also number 1 in the world, she deserves to be number 1 if she gets a contract now, even if she was the most impopular of them all!

I think Serena should stick with PUMA :)

I don't necessarily agree with a lot of Serena's outfit tastes, but I think it's great that PUMA has given her so much freedom to go along with what Serena likes. At least what she wears, is a reflection of Serena's personality and tastes, and I think that's a good thing regardless of what anyone else thinks of those tastes. Better than being another Nike or Adidas robot clone. :)

I agree.....Nike is so unoriginal.

Stay with Puma! :D

Oct 18th, 2002, 09:47 PM
I also think she should stick with Puma because they have given her her own line and the cat suit and the cameroon dress will always be assocated with Puma so why not stick with Puma?

I bet Serena is such a commodity that Nike would let her do her own line just to get her in their clothes :)

That would be fun, some imaginative clothes that don't look like someone threw up all over them from NIKE.

Oct 18th, 2002, 10:19 PM
irma, it's unpopular :) (not impopular)

She should stay with Puma. I imagine they'll make an all-out push to keep her. Nike already has Mauresmo, Davenport, Hantuchova, Pierce, Stevenson, Coetzer, and a lot of others. Puma doesn't have quite as many familiar names, so Serena would be more prominent there.

Serena = Puma

Enough said! It's so original, she has got to stay.

Serena is so hot right now, that it will be an all out war for Puma to keep her. And as much as I would like her to stay with Puma I'm afraid that they don't have enough to keep her. IMO, she will sign with Nike or Reebok and they will allow her to have her own design.

Also, for all those screaming GREED. Get over it!!!! All of these players deserves their contracts. It's alot of hard work that goes into playing tennis and winningand most of the players contracts are incentive based anyways.

Oct 19th, 2002, 12:02 AM
Serena is going to get paid, and paid big. Puma may not have the pockets to keep her, but Nike could pay her whole contract out of petty cash.

Serena has said that money doesn't matter to her, and that she loves Puma clothes. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Oct 19th, 2002, 01:58 AM
I'm keeping my fingers crossed as well. I hope she stays with PUMA!!! :D

NIKE + tennis outfits = YUCK!!!

I hope she stays with Puma, either that or she gets her own line in Nike.

And I don't know if you know, but saying that Serena is greedy makes you sound so jealous and petty.

Oct 19th, 2002, 03:00 AM
If Serena is greedy what does that make Anna K then? LOL the Queen of greed? <I don't think Anna is greedy just trying to follow the twisted logic!>

yea Serena's 1998 US Open dress was not one of the best I think. It was a white dress with black "cuts" that looked kind of like a dress from the Flinstones.

You mean these flintstones outfits? LOL

But hey the Martina Hingis short short skirts of that era were pretty bad too!

How about the black netball skirt of Martinez?

I think womens' tennis has a come along in last few years

Oct 19th, 2002, 06:26 AM
I don't think Serena will get that big deal that she wants right now. Times are hard. She'll need to bring something new to the table, to get that kind of money. Puma does not have that kind of money. Will she sell more of mike sneckers. I don't think so.

Oct 19th, 2002, 06:32 AM
I think it would have to be greater than 40 mill, maybe 50 or 60. Jeez...why didn't my parents take me out to play tennis :-( But then again I'm only 5'2 so I wouldn't been able to hang with these ladies nowadays. Hopefully my future husband will be tall and have strong genes, then a least my kids will have a chance. I promise not to wear a orange afro wig?

Oct 19th, 2002, 07:56 AM
Puma is a pretty marginal company. If Nike wants Serena, and word is they do, there is nothing that Puma can do for Serena that Nike can't do better.

Oct 19th, 2002, 08:00 AM
I like Puma better than Nike so i hope she stays with them. But I supose the one that will offer her the most money will be the best for her.

Oct 19th, 2002, 02:42 PM
When the 1st article came out a few months ago on Serena's contract, one of the stipulation she asked for was her own line. So even if she does sign with Nike, her clothes will be different from the other Nike's tennis player clothes, because Serena will have a hand in designing them.

So it really does not matter who she sign with!!!:bounce:

Oct 19th, 2002, 04:10 PM
i wonder if Reebox thinks they got/ or are getting their monies worth from Venus? this may affect whatever deal Serena manages to attract (as the top women's tennis player in the world). but i think that Serena's real incentive is to blow Venus' deal out of the water. she seems to be extremely competitive with Venus, even announcing that now that she has won one more touney than Venus for this year, she could take a break. so i think she will go with whichever company can afford to give her more money than Venus got, period.

her motive is not greed, it's competitiveness. or rivalry. take your pick. the "greed" argument misses the point IMHO.

Nike obviously has the deeper pockets and probably wouldn't mind making that Reebox deal look like small change. and PUMA have certainly exploited the hell out of her for a measly five mil. i hope she gets way more money if she is required to keep looking ridiculous...:p

Oct 19th, 2002, 05:44 PM
Those other women players that Nike has don't get all that much money. From what I understand Davenport gets only a million a year and the others get much less. Stevenson gets NO MONEY, just clothing and shoes. I would imagine the money for the others is based on performance.

Nike has deep pockets (very, very deep pockets) and if they want Serena they will get her. If her demands are too outrageous they might just decide they can do without her. It's the men who get the money from Nike. Agassi just re-signed for $100 million and Hewitt has a similar contract. Nike may give Serena her own line but I seriously doubt she will have totally free rein to design whatever she wants. Nike is a very conservative company.

Oct 19th, 2002, 06:29 PM
Yes, Anna is greedy too.

No one deserves multimillions just to wear clothes.

For the people dissing Serena about this contract, GET OFF IT! :fiery: If it was your faves (or yourself for that matter)that was eligible to obtain this kind of money, would you be saying the same thing?
