And whats more; she played really well! Great news for the Spanish FedCup team as well, only a couple of weeks from the finals.

The only thing I'm slightly less pleased about is that Arantxa now cant catch her for Spanish #1, but never mind ;)

I wasn't going to say anything but since the first shot has been fired and my named was DRAGGED into this post....

One semifinal appearance does not a resurgence make (ask Patty S.). Or are we forgetting that this is the same Conchita that got BOUNCED in the first round of a Tier IV, not once but TWICE this year! But with a miserable year like she has been having, as a fan you have to take your wins where you can.

Just as a note of interest, here a list of some notable players that Conchita has LOST to this year:

Kristina Brandi
Asa Svensson
Emilie Loit
Lilia Osterloh
Stephanie Foretz
Denisa Chladkove
Lisa Raymond (X2)
Anna Kournikova
Svetlana Kuznetsova

I'm sure this is a year that can't end soon enough for Conchita. Perhaps we should have the FAT LADY que up in both English and Spanish, so Conchita doesn't miss a word.

Conchita made semis last year in Rome ;)

Vamos Conchita!!!!

ross - players she has beat this week! myriam casanova, jennifer capriati, alex stevenson - i think that DOES mark a resurgence!
BTW - what does conchita actually have to achieve to get your approval? win this title? back in the top 10? serious question, just out of interest.

Coolconchita, please do not take my jabs at Conchita personally. I'm just poking fun. I have never been a fan of Conchita, but that doesn't mean she has no talent. Conchita has had an excellent career. I just look at players like Conchita, ASV and Michael Chang (and Michael Jordan for that fact) and shake my head. While I can appreciate their love for the sport and their accomplishments, I also think a player should know when to walk away from the sport, before the sport walks away from them. Conchita has nothing left to prove, but she should also know when to walk away (a la Graf, Courier, Novotna, etc.). And before the whole Conchita-brigade starts in with "Don't tell Conchita when to retire...yad, yad, yad... I'm sure Conchita knows her game is not where is use to be and the players are just getting younger, faster and stronger and the likelyhood of her making it back into the top 20 or top 10 or top 5 is between... well you get my point.

So to answer your question, in a word, nothing.

I dont know what your problem is with me , free, I haven't done anything to you. But you always take shots at me - you must be jealous. That is ok, I am worth it.

I dont care that Jen lost last week or this week. I dont know why you are bringing that up, it has nothing to do with anything.

I think its a good win for Conchi, so what? And yeah, Alex is just too inconsistent to be top 10. So, why do you try to start shit just because I have a comment that has nothing to do with you?

the first decent post i've ever seen from you with regards to conchi! congratulations! :wavey:

just to respond, conchi fans were getting the 'she should retire' threads in 1997 (terrible year) and 1999 (even worse). if she had of retired then, we would never have seen her make 2 grandslam finals, and reach world no 3 again!! 2002 has been bad - no question, but this week suggests to me that yes, maybe she can't be in the semis week in week out, but she CAN still perform at this high level. Just ask Pete Sampras! ;)

Jenny fan:

Is Alexandra being inconsistent? Who's reaching more quarterfinals lately? Jennifer or Alexandra? Who defeated who more times this year? Jennifer or Alexandra? WHO WAS BAGELED BY CONCHITA? Jennifer or Alexandra?

I'm really proud of Alexandra for another great week, considering the fact that she was a qualifier, having to play another matches before playing Sugiyama, in the first round. I wouldn't be that proud of my fav player like you. You look just another bad fan..

Guys, please make this a PLEASANT thread! Conchita's fans get few great moments anymore, so we need to enjoy them without controversy. I do not want to debate retirement v. pulling a Pete Sampras. I think Conchita's days in the Top 10 are over and I do not seem Slam titles in her future, but it is encouraging that she can still beat quality players and get quality results...just when you least expect it.

You really should think before you type. Capriati and Stevenson simply don't belong in the same sentence.

A three-time slam champion VS a non-titlist. The comparison ends there

supremeross
Oct 18th, 2002, 04:43 PM
While Capriati and Stevenson may not belong in the same sentence yet. I thinks its of interest to note that Alex has beaten her twice this year and while Capriati seems to have "peaked" career wise, Alex is still climbing, and steadly improving.

Becool
Oct 18th, 2002, 04:43 PM
I didn't want to compare both players. I'm just saying that Alexandra is not that bad player that everyone says she is. And her victories over Jennifer this year are a proof. Not only her victory on Jennifer, but in Jelena, Dementieva and etc.

Let's observe. A player like Alex, who's not in great conditions of being a top player, can win the top players? Imagine when she's fit and faster? She would definitely be more dangerous and defeat Jennifer more times. I wouldn't underestimate her game. I certainly wouldn't... But some people do.. What I can do?

Like supremeross also mentioned.. Alex is only improving

Congratulations to Conchita :)!

She showed today that no mather how good your oponents serve is, you can still win. Conchita played great and it was a fantastic match to watch.

When I first saw schedule for Friday I was so surprised, because they didn't put Patty or Lindsay/Kim match on TV, but now I am so happy I got the chance to watch it (even Alexandra was OK, she has no game except a serve, but she will learn).

I know Pete Sampras, Pete is an exceptional player and has won 14 Grand Slam titles. Conchita is no Pete Sampras. You're comparing apples to jelly donuts.

Congrats Conchita. I think her game has still lot of things to say. She has had some bad loses this year true, but she was coming from an injury... it takes time to recover plus it is hard when u are not used to be around the top 50 in the rankings and playing the top players in the 1st and 2nd rounds. She has defeated world #3 with a score which says lot of things....

Im so happy for her and for her fans, because it was being really depressing her results lately. If she continues playing is cause she still thinks she can do great things. She believes in herself so her fans do. The other people should just let her do what she wants, if she backs to top it is ok, if not at least she will always be happy cause she tried it and she never never gave up.

People say that the players should know when to leave a sport. I dont agree with that at all. Im sure that when Conchita started to play this sport, she never thought she would reach that higher and im sure that if she would had been a top 50 all her career she would be still happy, cause she loves the sport and she loves the competition. Those who say that a player must retire just cause she is not in the top anymore, shows no respect for those players who are getting similar results or ranking than Conchita, and not respect for the wishes of a player to continue playing.

well said anabel! people act like you should retire if you are not in the top ten and winning majors constantly. Geez there would be very few players left on the tour if this were to happen.
