Argentina should advance easy!

If Gise decides to play, Argentina will breeze through, specially with Canada not being there. But if Gisela, as she usually does, decides she's too good for Fed Cup, then it'll be much tougher.

There's a rumour that Mariana Díaz Oliva will be Argentina's new captain, so maybe she'll convince Gise of playing :hearts:

Hopefully this'll be played in Córdoba, Santa Fe, or some city other than Buenos Aires, where the crowds are decent and the stands are not empty.

It would be nice if another country got a chance at the World Group Play-Offs. This event has long been dominated by Canada, now when Argentina relegates it sends Dulko and hosts it! :p Good luck Paraguay :hearts: and Colombia :)

Thank god. But to be fair Dulko said in the past that she will only be again in the team if she was called along other profesional players, not juniors. Flor Molinero is basicly replacing Jozami. And then is Mery, too. I think she expects at least a regular top 100 as a team mate. She thought she had that when Salerni returned and was 65. But it was a glimpse.
Its like Sweden with Sofia, who waited for Johanna. Its not that the team should depend so much of her (the first player), it desperately needs a second name.

But seriously, latinamerican tennis isnt delivering competition. Even between countries. Colombia is the only one, besides Argentina, that has some chances in the zone. Then, without RoRo is almost impossible for Vero alone to do something. Same goes to Brazil and ACD. It will take 2/3 seasons for girls like Vero, Camila, Bianca to win rankings. In the case that they can do that.

Yes but Dulko should've been there when they actually needed her! I like Dulko, but to me it's not a good thing to have said that she'll only play for her country with other pro players. :p Rossana, for example, doesn't have that kind of pride, she's been playing on an entire team of juniors the last 4 years (even though all other Paraguayans are juniors, she didn't have to play). It's good for the country and especially junior players to have a veteran or a top player give advise, experience and confidence while competing as a team. I can understand Gisela's decision though, as a top player probably with a stricter calendar than Rossana.

Yes, compared to all other continents bar Africa, Latin American female tennis leaves a lot to be desired and of course Argentina and Colombia have the best chance in World Group II, but that's simply because these representatives have had more experience and they're older. I've always said L.A can't deliver in WTA competition if the juniors don't get their chances, which are limited enough with the WTA calendar (1 South American tournament per year- the WCs of which last year won Duque a WTA title and gave Botto her first WTA experience and she's done well since). And the Latin American challenger circuit is not enough to fund a career, look at Vanina Garcia Sokol. The more chances you give juniors in bigger stakes, the more chance they have of making it. Fed Cup World Group II playoffs are perfect for that...and there are a lot of good Latin juniors coming up who in a year or two's time could compete at that level. But I agree that this year might be a bit early for them to "win" at Group II level, but building up their career foundations is important. Cepede, Botto, Puig, Duarte, Ormaechea, Eskenazi, Paz-Franco, Gamiz, Silva..all older teenagers with big promise but no WTA-level practice yet. Fed Cup World Group II Play-Offs would be great for them!

I think there might be a few surprises in this competition!

Really sad indeed. The last time Uruguay had some representation was when Tefy Craciun still played. We had some hope that she was going to be top 200. But then Tefy injured and got married to some uruguayan soccer player, i think. Then, she vanished from tennis. She did have the plans of returning, but it looks like shes definitely retired.

Uruguay is probably the only southamerican country that as today doesnt even have a player in the top 800 (i could be wrong). Its kind a strange, cause being next to Brasil and Argentina, that have a lot of ranked players, you would expect that they can deliver some. But, no. In terms of sports planning, it is a subject of matter when there are sports that really are dominant without giving too much chance to others.

Brazil population: 190M
Argentina population: 40M
Uruguay population: 3M :p

Uruguay is the 2nd smallest country in South America (even Guyana is bigger), slightly bigger than Surinam.

Brazil and Argentina have many ranked players as most of the ITF tournaments in South America are played in these countries. Number of ITF tournaments in Uruguay: 0 :sobbing:

Excellent point there, but that doesnt stop them to have a lot of great soccer players (including the best of te 2010 World Cup). But yes, population is an important factor. But i guess sometimes it has to do with what you said before: interest. In this countries, soccer is so accesible to play. With tennis, you have to pay to play in a court (except the public ones, which are quite rare). That might be a reason too. But perhaps now Cuevas can inspire boys and girls to approach to tennis.

And I'm sure that Mexico could have found better players also :tape:

In the case of Mexico, one cant say they dont try: They organize ATPs, WTAs, challengers, futures...hope someday they can deliver someone better than Gavaldon, they deserve that.

Not so sure about this last part, Mexico´s tennis is in very bad shape. Other than the 4 selected, they could have gone with Ale Granillo but I don´t think she would had made any difference, probably the best Mexican player currently could be Nazari Urbina, but she is at Texas A&M, and then there is a bunch of Juniors that could make it better in the future (Olmos is one of them, as well as Marcela Zacarias, Caro Betancourt, and a few others), the Abdalas are not bad they were also attending US college (Arizona I think), and they just started to play ITFs.
Anyway best of luck to the team, lets see what they can do.

Of course its great. For example, i think Paula learned a lot from the matches against Kanepi and Tetreault. But the first big challenge are the US and european challengers . It seems to be the direction to become a decent pro. Even if women´s game is being criticized as flat and similar.
Sadly, there hasnt be constant path of victories for any latinamerican player. Except for the older ones as you said.
I have hopes for Vero, Paz, Cami and Bianca (who won a 25k and defeated Molik). But if theres something that the girls from here have had is sporadic success. You named Vani, but seriously there is a list of a dozen of girls that once they reach ranks from 120 to 190, then they retire. Wether are injuries, economic problems, you name it. Argentina has had a dramatic list of players who did that (partly because of this is the national Fed Cup team debacle). Venezuela and Brazil are similar cases.

Argentina has a lot of chances here. It has the number 1 of the world in doubles and the only top 50 , 2 top 200 like Molinero (reached MD in Auckland this year) , Irigoyen (her best surface is clay) and Milu Auroux.
I like Chile's team with Koch and Silva , if they are not in Argentina's group I would like a final between Chile and Argentina. I have the question with Colombia , because we know Duque is an exellent player but i don't know how is the level of Castano at this moment. We have to wait for her results in the challengers of USA.
Paraguay has few chances here. With Rossana this would be different.

I will be there to see all the matches surely. :bounce:

I like Chile's chances too. After the two favourites, Argentina and Colombia, I think Chile has the 3rd strongest team. Koch is a solid player, but as we know Silva and Brito are very dangerous youngsters, all decent doubles players. Castano's level is always top 200 at least, and let's face it, that's enough for here :p And I think her experience will be a big factor amongst all these juniors, might give Colombia the edge over the others.

Rossana might not be playing but she has been around as Paraguay's saviour for a very long time, there's got to be a time when she passes on the baton to the next star. And since October last year she's been in Paraguay helping out these juniors. Isaura Enrique is not a bad Paraguayan #2, she just hasn't played many ITFs. She beat Ana Clara Duarte in Fed Cup last year. I'd say that without Rossana, the only difference for Paraguay may be that Chile and Brazil are slightly stronger on paper.

It should be a really interesting context with the new generation! Just hope that not all the strongest teams are grouped together.

I second that. Brazil has now an improved ACD and a half-recovered Teliana. I´d have called Fernanda instead of Roxanne, since Fer has had more international competition. But still, Chile needs Camila to win more rank for calling it a candidate. But, at least in the first round, you might have some teenagers winning.

I would like to agree with you! I think she could push her in one of the sets, 5 or 6 games would be impressive considering she's never played a top 150 player before. But probably Gisela will be highly motivated, her first time playing Fed Cup for a long time.

I also saw the end of the second set between Ma.Fernanda Alves and Cata Castano. Cata was 6-0 *6-5 *40-15 and was broken. In the tie break Alves was up 5-3 but Cata won 4 points in a row and won the match.

I dont understand what you want to say, Argentina (with Dulko in the court) could win against Belarus, Switzerland or Japan. Remember Dulko is the n 1 of the world in doubles and she won 2 times against Azarenka in 2010. Obviously that Argentina also could lose, but I really dont see a lot of difference between Argentina and the winners of Asia and Europe. Maybe I am wrong

^I guess in terms of singles players, the poster thinks the other teams have a stronger field.

I didn't know Gisela has a good record against Vika in 2010. I think Argentina has good chance but it will be very tough for Gisela. She has to win all her singles matches and get that doubles win as it will probably boil down to that fifth rubber. The WG II playoffs is played on best of 5 format (3 rubbers to win) right?
