View Full Version : Japanese Juniors Thread

Sep 4th, 2010, 10:49 PM
I wanted to have a thread to cheer for some of the Japanese Juniors without having to make individual threads. Obviously they might eventually earn their own thread, but for the moment we can collectively follow their results here.

At the moment, there are 7 girls ranked in the top 100 in the ITF Junior Rankings:

1. Sachie Ishizu (#6)
2. Emi Mutaguchi (#50)
3. Eri Hozumi (#57)
4. Miho Kowase (#59)
5. Akiko Omae (#71)
6. Risa Ozaki (#84)
7. Miyu Kato (#88)

US Open
R1 - Miho Kowase (JPN) vs (WC) Kyle McPhillips (USA)
R1 - Eri Hozumi (JPN) vs (Q) Julia Elbaba (USA)
R1 - (Q) Risa Ozaki (JPN) vs Ons Jabeur (TUN)
R1 - (Q) Miyu Kato (JPN) vs (9) Gabriela Dabrowski (CAN)
R1 - Emi Mutaguchi (JPN) vs Ester Goldfeld (USA)

Pretty tough matches, the only girl I realistically see winning her first round is Eri Hozumi, who is coached by Ai Sugiyama's mom! Miho might have a small chance, but McPhillips has had some promising results on the WTA tour.

Elsewhere, Akiko Omae (#71) is playing the quallies of the 25k ITF event in Noto this week. Last week, she successfully qualified for 25k Noto with two impressive wins over Ai Yamamoto and Erika Takao. Omae seems to be making some good progress towards the senior tour. Last year, she defeated former top 100 player Meng Yuan in Gifu.

Strong appearance at 2011 AO.

12 girls played the main draw!
6 advanced to the second round and 3 advanced to the third round.
In doubles, finalists (2), one more in quarterfinal!!

Hope they will survive in the senior (WTA) tour too!

Hey :wavey:

I'm going to try and update who the top 15 ranked juniors are at the 1st of each month, I think it will be interesting to see how these girls develop. There is a lot of depth at the moment, and several standout 1995 and 1996 prospects that seem really good. Hopefully some of the girls will try playing some pro tournaments this year.

Also, here is a great video of Miho upsetting Monica Puig at the Osaka GA tournament last fall. I love her game :hearts: She's had some tough luck at the clay tournaments in South America the last few weeks but its understandable.

Updated the rankings. Ozaki, Hibino, and to a lesser extent Kato made some progress up the rankings. Emi has now dropped out of the top 200, but she is focusing on seniors and now has a WTA ranking of #866. Also included Akiko and Yuki Ito who are juniors with WTA rankings. Hopefully some of the girls play in the upcoming challengers :)

Once again, thanks for the great updates, Juki! It's such a pity I won't be able to check any of them out at Junior Wimbledon this year, I'm on holiday that week and there are so many players I'd love to get to see play in person.

Anyway, the Japanese ITF season is starting out this week at Gifu, like most years. Here are some of the juniors in the draw. I might have looked over a few.

Main Draw
(WC) Makoto Ninomiya Junior Rank: 53

Qualification Draw
Akiko Omae
(WC) Risa Ozaki (63)
(WC) Yurika Aoki (UNR)
(WC) Miki Ukai (UNR)

Miyu Kato (Junior Rank 34) and Eri Hozumi (Junior Rank 61) are also in the alternates, hopefully they can make it, I'd have probably given them qually wildcards.

Not much happened in April, only Kanami and Riko had big changes in their rankings. Again, I wish the girls would try more seniors event. Only 4 juniors even have a ranking. Emi could get a ranking if she reaches Bangkok quarters this week. Also Miyu Kato is playing Fukuoka but plays Jin A Lee in the 1st round, tough.

May 4th, 2011, 09:28 AM

Risa Ozaki qualified :yeah: Not expecting much success here for Japanese girls....

(9)Ons Jabeur (TUN) v Makoto Ninomiya (JPN)
Catalina Pella (ARG) v Risa Ozaki (JPN)
(10)Miho Kowase (JPN) v Sofiya Kovalets (UKR)
(16)Victoria Bosio (ARG) v Miyu Kato (JPN)

May 29th, 2011, 11:55 AM
Nice effort from Risa :yeah:

I don't expect much success here either, unfortunately. Hopefully the grass season will be better for them.

Makoto Ninomiya already lost.

May 29th, 2011, 05:37 PM
Results from today:

Sofiya Kovalets (UKR) def. [10] Miho Kowase (JPN) 6-2 6-3
Miyu Kato (JPN) def. [16] Victoria Bosio (ARG) 6-1 6-2
[9] Ons Jabeur (TUN) def. Makoto Ninomiya (JPN) 6-2 6-3

Miho and Makoto had tough round matches, but a great and comfortable win from Miyu over a more experienced clay courter. My expectations have already been exceeded, as I expected all the girls would lose in straight sets. Happy to see I'm already wrong. :D

May 29th, 2011, 05:38 PM
Great win for Miyu :yeah: Was not expecting that either!

May 29th, 2011, 05:50 PM
Miyu :bounce: Will play Donna Vekic next, should be a close match :scared:

May 30th, 2011, 04:43 PM
Monday's results:

Catalina Pella (ARG) def. Risa Ozaki (JPN) 2-6 7-6(1) 6-1

Ninomiya/Ozaki def. Hozumi/Sharipova 7-6(2) 6-2

Quite disappointing, I wonder if Risa wasted a match point in the second. Does anyone know? But she seems to be playing quite consistently lately, which is a good thing.

Wimbledon Junior Q Draw is out. I'm so sad I can't attend the juniors this year. I had an amazing time last year watching Ishizu.

Pretty difficult matches.

Miyu Kato vs (16) Victoria Duval
Risa Ozaki vs (4) Ons Jabeur
Nao Hibino vs (wc) Katy Dunne
Miho Kowase vs (10) Alison Van Uytvanck
Eri Hozumi vs (wc) Daneika Borthwick
Makoto Ninomiya vs Francesca Stephenson

Unfortunately I don't think Miyu, Risa or Miho have much chance because their opponents are in good form, as is Stephenson, but Makoto does have a small chance there.
I don't know much about Hozumi, but I saw Borthwick play at Nottingham a couple of weeks ago against Lee-Waters, she took a set against her and seems to know how to play on grass, so I'd say that could prove to be tricky.

I don't know much about Hibino or Dunne, so I'd say that is the best chance of a win, imo.

Kowase is already out. 3-6 0-6 loss to Van Uytvanck.

Hozumi is out to Borthwick, as well.

Im new here, im not a huge fan of tennis but i like to watch sometimes, im looking forward to watching the Japanese juniors in action at Wimbledon.
Ive found this thread very useful so thank you for the information :) It is a shame the girls didnt get an 'easier' draw.

No problem and welcome! :D

Are you attending Wimbledon next week? Please watch them if you can! I'm sure you'll have a great time, I preferred going to the Junior tournament last year than the first week of the main draw. Probably because it was less busier... Have a great time if you are!

Very unlucky draw. Nao might be the only hope for a win, though I do think Miyu could challenge Victoria.

Kanami got her first WTA points this week. QF at Indonesian 10k :)

Well, one week on and Hibino did indeed beat Dunne and fell in the second round, but Ozaki also had the win of her career to defeat Roland Garros champion Ons Jabeur, then Seaborne in the second round. Unfortunately, she fell 0 and 1 to Indy De Vroome in the third round, but this was still a great effort from Risa.

I've been pretty impressed with some of her results, but when she has lost pretty easily in some of her matches. It would be nice to see her starting to play more pro tournaments frequently.

Some info about Naomi Osaka please , where have you been hiding her ? It seems to me we're looking at in prospect the best Japanese player ever.

A disappointing match, Okamura let 3-0 in the opening set and had chances to get a 4-0 lead.
