1st Round

Laura Robson (GBR) d. (1) Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) 16 62 75

A big win for Laura after a few dissapointing weeks on tour, Chakvetadze stays number 1 but needs to tidy up her game ahead of next weeks US Open.

(8) Karolina Sprem (CRO) d. (Q) Lilia Osterloh (USA) 62 60

Lilia qualified with two tough victories, and it seemed to have taken it out of her. Karolina hit convincingly from the baseline and played aggresively throughout.

(6) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. Lindsay Davenport (USA) 16 62 75

A return to form for Maria who has slipped in the rankings of late, Lindsay came out all guns blazing with her big forehand causing most damage. Maria soon regrouped and played a clever match in the end.

Kim Clijsters (BEL) d. (4) Elena Vesnina (RUS) 76 06 61

A huge win for Kim who has been in very poor form recently, losing in the first round 3 times back-to-back. The Belgain showed fine consistancy and was too powerful for Vesnina today.

(3) Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) d. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) 76 63

A tough match to take for Hantuchova, she dominated her service games in the first set whilst Wickmayer had to fend of heaps of break point oppurtunities. In the tie-break the Belgain raised her game and continued on from there.

(5) Elena Baltacha (GBR) d. Shuai Zhang (CHN) 61 16 75

Baltacha played solidly throughout, and Zhang was showing strong form aswell ahead of the US Open. The Brit started brightly, but Zhang played near perfectly in the second set. The final set looked to be going Zhang's way but Bally battled back and stole it.

(7) Alona Bondarenko (UKR) d. Tatiana Golovin (FRA) 76 67 76

An amazing scoreline, though some pretty scrappy tennis at times from both. Golovin's emotions got the better of her missing match points in the final set. Bondarenko needs to be much better for the next round.

Selima Sfar (TUN) d. (2) Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE) 60 75

The second time this year the Tunisian has rumbled Hsieh, Selima played a fantastic match and was eager to come forward in most rallies. Hsieh was clearly not at her best, and left the court swifly after the match.

Quarter Finals

Laura Robson (GBR) d. (8) Karolina Sprem (CRO) 60 61

Laura blew everybody away today, accurate and consistant hitting was the key to the dominating scoreline against Karolina. Laura has a real shot at the title if she continues playing like that.

Kim Clijsters (BEL) d. (6) Maria Sharapova (RUS) 61 06 76

Kim is showing this week she is still hungry for the sport, the Belgian shocked Maria with a dominating first set. Sharapova battled and levelled as Clijsters had a nightmare 2nd set. In the end Kim regrouped and snuck the 3rd set.

(5) Elena Baltacha (GBR) d. (3) Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) 46 64 60

Baltacha will be so glad she decided to play this week, two wins now under her belt ahead of next weeks US open. The Brit kept the 1st set tight but was broken serving at 4-5. From there Elena moved up a level and dismissed Wickmayer in 3 sets.

(7) Alona Bondarenko (UKR) d. Selima Sfar (TUN) 75 60

Bondarenko has taken two title this year, and today showed the ability to take another one. Alona played the whole match at a high standard, and after Sfar lost the first set she seemed to lose focus and allowed the Ukrainian to take full control.

On Court - Brits and Kim return to form in New Haven

http://www.fila.com/files/news/2010/06/CLIJSTERS_wimb2010_00139.jpg

Kim Clijsters a three time title winner on tour has been in dreadful form of late exiting in the first round in 3 cosecutive tournaments (Cincinatti, San Diego and Montreal). This week has seen the 13th ranked player earn a semi final place in New Haven, impressivly beating Maria Sharapova and Elena Vesnina. Next for the Belgian is Laura Robson who had only won 1 match ahead of the New Haven tournament. Laura dismissed top seed and world number 1 in the opening round backing that up with a thrashing of Karolina sprem in the quarter finals. The semi final match between the pair is set to be highly competitive and produce high quality tennis.

Fellow Brit Elena Baltacha has had a solid American hardcourt season, but at times had the potential to go deeper into the tournaments. This week has seen Elena battle her way into the semis with wins over Shuai Zhang and Yanina Wickmayer. Facing Baltacha is Alona Bondarenko, the Ukrainian showed strength on the clay court winning the Bastad and Praque titles respectivly. Alona had a good week in Cincinatti not so long ago but fell early last week in Montreal. This semi final is wide open, everybody knows Baltacha at her best can upset Alona and the same applies for Alona, who can find there top level on the day?
