View Full Version : Is there a player you dislike and don't know why?

For some reason, I *LOVE* it when Lisa Raymond loses. It makes my day. Any loss will do, singles or doubles, though I take greater pleasure in a singles loss. But I cannot figure out why I dislike her so much. I have seen her play and I cannot point to anything I dislike in particular about her. She seems nice, she does not trash talk or do anything annoying. I have no problems with her game, I mean, she *seems* nice, I *should* have nothing against her. But when I see she has lost, it makes my day, it really does. When I saw she lost to Myskina, I was *loving* it.

Everyone has their favorites and ones they do not like, but usually people have reasons for not liking a player. Does anyone dislike a player and does not know why?

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:19 PM
Mine used to be Nathalie Tauziat. Now, I think it's Schiavone, but I think she's pretty foul anyways, so I guess there is a reason for her.

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:22 PM
I'll name two - Venus and Lil Kim' I mean Serena. No it's not a black thing don't care what all their annoying fans say. I don't like other players who aren't black --- lordy lord lord lord:rolleyes:

Davenport is another(I always end up rooting against her unless if she plays the W/S, of course)

Conchi Martinez (didn't like her then and don't like her now, except if she plays the W/S, of course)

Anastasia Myskina.

I have no idea why. She seems to be a great and nice player, but I just don't like her. Well, I don't know what else to say.

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:24 PM
I don't see how you can like or dislike someone you don't know. If someone could please explain because this thread does not make any sense to me.

I get the same feeling about Lindsay, that she is not all sugar and spice/peaches and cream/little miss innocent either, but I like her. That does not bother me that she might have an image that is nicer than the real woman. I do not think she is the first.

Actually, I like Lisa, but, I really love it when she loses. I would never root for her to lose, and if for some reason, she makes a slam final in singles or something and wins, I would be happy for her. But, MAN, I love it when she loses! She is really the only player where I get positive feelings from a loss.

Helen Lawson
Oct 15th, 2002, 05:26 PM
Some did a response about Lindsay, but I guess deleted it.

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:26 PM
I think the concept that Helen is trying to convey is that she CANNOT explain it to you apoet. It's mostly based on a vibe or a feeling that you get about a player. Maybe something in their body language?

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:27 PM
I have a friend on the board who loves Lindsay and since I don't dislike Lindsay I did not want her to get that idea. :D

You are funny Helen. I like that you are honest. Rare on this board.

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:31 PM
for sure
i love when jelena dokic loses

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:32 PM
Maybe, Treufreund, but the body language someone conveys is not necessarily true of what kind of personality he or she is. If that makes any sense, I don't know. Personally, I feel that you should look at the whole package of a person before deciding whether or not you should dislike him or her. A sports figure or celebrity is not someone fans can ever truly know so why say that you dislike them? You may not agree with certain decisions they make, but that should hardly be the case for disliking someone.

I'm going to shut up because I am rambling now. Maybe I feel that dislike is too strong a word for what Helen is describing.

So your from Louisville, Treu, my grandparents live there and I'm going there this weekend. Any cool stuff to do while I am in town?

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:37 PM
WOW! Apoet29, it's cool that you are coming here. Send me an email and I will try to give you some info. What kind of thing do you want to do in Louisville?

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:45 PM
Jen Capriati and Amelie Mauresmo.
I have a ton of respect for their skills and all but I wouldnt root for them even if my faves are retired and gone.

Oct 15th, 2002, 05:48 PM
Hantuchova and Myskina... they just come barging in think they can go and defeat all our faves! :(
They seem really nice persons, but I like it when they lose, preferably, I'd like to see them double-bagelled! :D

Oct 15th, 2002, 06:10 PM

Since I have ever seen her on TV for the first time in my life years ago, I knew very little about her achievement, not to even mention the personality, but I knew then who I will be rooting agaisnt as long as I'm watching tennis and she is playing, no matter who she plays! And I don't know why??

And when she was beating Venus over and over again in the late 90's my dislike toward her is enormous! The worst feeling I had watching a tennis final was when she won her first Grand Slam at US Open 98. Man!! did it piss me off?? And the most joyous match is when Serena beat her in US open 99 semifinal! Oh and Venus' 1st Grandslam beating her in the final.. was such a sweet victory! I'm a bit more settled about her now that Vee and Ree have got her number. But still to this day, everytime a draw comes out with Davenport, I look for a player capable of upseting her. She's a great player, I have to admit my backhand is kinda inspired by her.. I realized at times that I do visualize Lindsey when I'm hitting my backhand.. still cannot like her as a person. as much as I appreciate her skills and talent.

Well that's one player I dislike and I don't know why!

And for the one I dislike and I know why (sorry I just can't resist)

And the reason? because she reminds of all the b*tch I've ever met in my life!

Regarding the double bagel, it is like being in a candy store for me. Sometimes I take particular glee when Lisa is thrashed. Other times, I relish a close three-set loss, it makes my day all the sweeter that she could have won but did not, like she got the taste of a win, but did not win. Like I am glad it was flaunted under her nose and then removed. Other times, I feel a good thrashing is the best way to go, let her know she never even had a chance.

I think deep down, maybe I do not think she is that good a doubles player. Maybe the only reason she does well in doubles is that really good doubles players are good in singles and most good singles players do not play doubles much, like Lisa is an opportunist taking advantage of no good, regular doubles players. The Williams sisters, Martina, Anna and the rest do not play enough. I feel if these girls played regularly, Lisa would not be a top doubles player. But this is not Lisa's fault that the other girls do not play that much, plus she has beaten some of these teams, so that cannot be the reason.

Oct 15th, 2002, 06:26 PM
Dokic and Capriati for no reason!

Helen Lawson
Oct 15th, 2002, 06:29 PM
I have no hard feelings about Stubbs at all. While I take glee in a Lisa loss in doubles, I always feel for Stubbs some when they lose, like onto the next tournament and good luck to her.

I really think Lisa is fine, I just do not know why I love it so much when she loses.

Oct 15th, 2002, 06:49 PM
Arantxa,Jennifer,Venus,Henin,Smashnova ... a lot of more..:p

Oct 15th, 2002, 07:06 PM
I always liked it when Testud lost, but I don't have to worry about that anymore.

I'm always happy when Kim Clijsters loses...don't ask, I don't know why either

However, I'm at my happiest when Lucic loses. She's a nice girl and I like the way she hits the ball. But when she loses I think "see you CAN'T win based on your power. Go lose 20 pounds and work on your consistency." Sheesh:rolleyes:

Oct 15th, 2002, 08:07 PM
some people are giving reasons. *tut* *tut* *tut* ;)

as for me, I never not like a player for no reason. Might be a petty reason, but there's always one.

Oct 15th, 2002, 09:12 PM
I don't dislike any players but I do tend to find myself cheering against Kim Clijsters and Monica Seles.

I know both ladies are great players and humans and I have respect for both, but prehaps I dislike how they are conveyed as saints by some?

Oct 15th, 2002, 09:36 PM
I really, really like when Venus looses. When she lost against Maleeva the other week, it just made me happy. I would much rather see her loosing against Lindsay.
Even though I rather see Lindsay winning any match than Venus loosing other.

I don't have anything aginst Venus, but it's just the way it is. Hope it vcan change some day, because she seems a really nice girl, specially the last few months....

Oct 15th, 2002, 09:41 PM
i guess Dokic is the player i like to see losing without a reason.

Oct 15th, 2002, 09:46 PM
I used to feel that way about Martina few years ago. I didn't have anything against her, but I loved it when she lost. And the funniest thing was that I was unconscious of this, and would wonder after she lost why I felt so happy. But then I found myself trying to find reasons to dislike her, even sometimes if they were not really there, and by now my dislike of her is not based on that feeling alone.

Oct 15th, 2002, 09:47 PM
Well as we are on a roll my picks and for no reason that I can ever pin point I don't like

Henin ....oh no I have a reason she just makes me fall asleep and then I miss the following match

Oct 16th, 2002, 05:50 AM
Nobody mentioned FARINA yet...
Now that tauziat is gone, only she is on my list.

Oct 16th, 2002, 06:24 AM
Hmmm.... That's an interesting question, Helen. I guess I would say Alexandra Stevenson. I have a slight dislike for her that I can't explain.

There are a few players I really dislike -- for reasons that I CAN explain --- but that's another thread! :)

Oct 16th, 2002, 06:45 AM
Weird thread... Personally when I dislike a player, there's always a reason, even it's a minor reason.
On the other side, I often cheer for some players without a reason (but I invent the reasons afterwards...).

Maybe Mauresmo and Henin enter in the category of players I dislike for minor, non-valuable reasons.

Oct 16th, 2002, 07:25 AM
Most players that I dislike I know exactly why, but one that I can't stand --and don't really have a good reason why-- is Lisa Raymond. I guess Helen, you and I just catch some certain thing about Lisa that justs annoys us, lol. I don't know, but that fact that she is a top doubles player annoys me, and whenever she wins I am annoyed as well. Kinda strange to have such harsh feelings for no real particular reason, but oh well ;)

Oct 16th, 2002, 08:45 AM
There is one player that I like to see lose, but I know the reason(s) why so I guess I will not mention her name.

Besides, I might get another nasty note from a moderator if I mention this Italian-American and 3 time GS winner's name. :)

Oct 16th, 2002, 09:40 AM
HINGIS - love to see her lose it makes my day. Don't know why I like to see her lose, I rpect her talent just dislike her as a person and like to see her lose.

Saying that some of the best matches I've seen on the WTA tour have involved Hingis but the end result has to end with a loss for her!

Oct 16th, 2002, 10:10 AM

I would say i enjoy watching hingis lose. i wonder if i'll feel the same way when she comes back this next time cause she seems so overwhelmed by these big ladies thats its almost kinda sad (but not quite :D ) to watch her get demolished but for the time being, i do get a particular thrill out of it and dont know why.

as for those i love watching lose and i know why, its Seles and Stevenson. I like when Coezter loses as well but cant stand watching her matches to even enjoy the loss

Well, I see that Lisa Raymond has won today. So, no euforia on my part (at least not yet, the tournament is still young), but I am happy for Lisa that she got into the next round. See, I am not all bad. I am not unhappy when she wins. I will admit that if she got beat in the first round of a Tier III, it would have been partytime chez Helen Lawson, but good luck to Lisa.

I think maybe for the people who posted who do not have a reason to dislike a player, but do, they should do a cheering thread for them, to prove no hard feelings. Maybe it would make you change your attitude about the player. I am willing to do it for Lisa as long as her fans do not oppose it. And it would be genuine, also!

I'll bite. There are players I enjoy seeing lose for a reason...I won't name them.

But whenever Hantuchova, Henin and Seles lose, I am filled with glee for their opponents. I don't know why. None of these ladies has ever done anything particularly offensive. Hantuchova has a great game, talent and a winner's attitude. She dumped Hingis at Indian Wells this year. I should like her, but I don't. I celebrated Patty Schnyder's comeback victory over her In Zurich. Henin ditto. There should be nothing not to like about her. She lost first round Roland Garros to Aniko Kapros, and each shot I was cheering Kapros, even though I don't know her. Why? Henin has a beautiful backhand, game, attitude. Maybe not enough wins against top players, but that's no reason not to like someone, or is it? Seles, poor girl, got stabbed. She scraggled back out of the depths of despair to climb back to the top five in the world. She should be a heroine...it would be nice to see her win another Grand Slam. But I like it when she loses. No...I love it. When she nearly lost in the US Open this year to ?Korean or Chinese player, I was ecstatic. When she went out to Daja Bedanova last year, I was thrilled. When Stephanie Foretz beat her in Charleston, I was jumping up and down in excitment.

Is this what you mean , Helen Lawson?

Oct 22nd, 2002, 05:12 PM
Okay I will admit it, I hate it when Anna Smashnova wins, I dunno, that girl work hard get into the best physical shape in her life and fitter than most on the tour, all these hard work need some credit but no, I want her to lose LOL

Yes, it is the thing I am getting at. You should like the player, there is nothing bad about the player that bugs you, but you love it when they lose and you cannot explain it.

I guess it is a common thing in sports!

Oct 23rd, 2002, 11:20 PM
things that come to mind about Lisa:

1. flushed face and blotchy skin
2. stocky legs with the odd bruise here and there
3. off-white underwear
4. a pseudo "team-ethic" oriented person
5. keen to hype up her university background
6. i play smart finesse tennis, not this childish baseline hitting

i also hate to see rush over to her partner in doubles to say something, as if she's the smartest plater on the court

i guess this is why i'm happy to see her losing matches, like today :)

Oct 23rd, 2002, 11:38 PM
LOL!!! I can't believe so many of you dislike poor Lisa! she's easily my fav non-spanish player :D - but really, Lisa is one of the most invisible people in the WTA tour, I am surprised so many of you feel anything about her at all, much less dislike her when she barely opens her mouth! :D

BUT, hunkyalex, that's LOADS of reasons you give not to like Lisa, I thought the idea was people you dislike but have no reason for not liking?

I can say there are a few players I do not like, but for all of them I am very clear in the reasons why I dislike them.

I can only think of one player, but he's male: Carlos Moya. I just can't stand the sight of him and I can't really think of any reason not to like him... probably something he did and I can't remember ;)

I used to really dislike Lisa Raymond for no reason too. For years she was definately in my top 1 or 2 most hated players, yet in all that time I don't think I ever even saw her play a match!

But in the past few years I've really changed my opinion and now she is pretty much my favourite player, so I guess there is hope for her. Going by this thread in a few years she'll have a whole army of fans! Specially if she manages not to get chosen for the Olympics again ;)
