Well That痴 the question (would say Hamlet).
I remember the first time I watched her play on TV : it was in Wimbledon 2001 against Venus Williams, and I saw a smart and solid game. Daniela was then ranked around the 100th in the WTA. Venus won easily but I was immediately seduced by Dani痴 play and I thought 敵osh, that girl is gonna be a top player on the tour . Then I began to follow her results that were not terrific in that year 2001 but were good enough to make her reach the 38th rank by the end of the year. I was a little bit satisfied that my first impression was not so bad (I hate to be wrong).

But what about that game ? I saw it like a mix between Hingis痴 court intelligence, Davenport痴 strokes quality and something that痴 reminding of Venus but I can稚 say what. But obviously there is that Daniela痴 personal touch, so uneasy to define. Perhaps what makes her game so attractive is that big contrast between her fragile appearance and the aggressivity of her groundstrokes... and yes, the last but not the least, concerning the game : a pure, elegant technique on all shots.

Then came 2002, full of promise for the talented Slovakian. In the Australian Open (3rd round), she takes a set to Venus (that maybe was not totally healthy). The latter reacts and seems to crush Dani in the second set, 6-0, everything seems to go bad for the Slovakian. Everybody expects the third set will be all the same, but no : Venus doesn稚 serve very well and Hantuchova breaks. But she doesn稚 reach the finish : her nerves leave her. Venus wins 6-4 in the third. By this time, I知 very anxious on Daniela痴 mental. She knows how to fight back but she cannot finish. Yet another Kournikova ? I don稚 want to think that. I believe in her, I stated she would be a top player, I don稚 want to be wrong.

Yes I want this synthesis between finesse, elegance and power to be the women痴 teniis reference. Dani has taken Nigel Sears as a coach. That will help her.
As a matter of fact she realises her first big achievement in Indian Wells by winning the title in an awful final against Martina Hingis. Hingis is my favourite player and I知 happy to see her back after that terrible injury in Filderstadt 2001. I don稚 know who I知 cheering for : Martina who needs to regain confidence or Daniela who needs a title. This final is a heartbreaker. Daniela won without contestation. Martina didn稚 have a tough defeat like in Melbourne at the beginning of the year where she had championship points, she doesn稚 look terribly disappointed. She痴 Daniela痴 mentor, and it seems to me she痴 happy for Dani, which balances her disappointment.

The rest, everyone knows : two quarter finals lost to Serena in Grand Slams but both time after beating a tough opponent : Dokic, and Henin : that latter win at 3rd set Tie-break was so great after her violent fall and her thumb hurted : clearly Daniela is no more afraid of winning.

Besides these successes, the press began to notice Daniela : The girl has charms even though she痴 not a beauty queen. Some British columnists defined her as the new Kournikova. I like Anna but I never was a real fan, Anna was her own victim as far as tennis is concerned, she had the chance to grab a few titles but failed to because of her lack of concentration. Not that she is not committed but extra-tennis concerns seem to dominate in her mind. I think Daniela is such different : she doesn稚 make her sexyness a big deal while Anna does. Of course I知 not in Dani痴 head to read that but I知 convinced I知 right about that. And Daniela doesn稚 run after endorsements. Moreover, so many people talk about Dani痴 kindness. I致e read somewhere that some people in the WTA staff consider she痴 the nicest person on the tour. Maybe it痴 even a disadvantage for her tennis. Tennis is a fight and nice people are not the best at fights (just look at Martina). But I clearly have so much more sympathy for nice people. That痴 why I dislike a girl like Capriati who sometimes acts stupidly.

Today it痴 almost sure : Dani will end the year 2002 in the top ten. I was right in saying she would be a top player. Hope she won稚 make me lie when I said she痴 a #1 material.

Playing good tennis, looking good, being nice and giving so many thrills : that痴 why I知 an unconditional Hantuchova fan. I guess there are many others to share these views.

She's a VERY hard worker, she's VERY determined to do the absolute best she can, tennis is #1 for her & she's very serious about it, she's also SUPER nice & has OODLES of talent, just to name a few! :)

Thanks for sharing, it's great to hear from another tennis fan who can see what a WONDERFUL player Daniela is! :D

Bad thrills right now : Husarova leads to Dani 4-2 in the first set.

Martina Navratilova is Daniela's mentor, not Hingis.

Great post though from another Daniela fan :):bounce: :wavey:

Yeah, I was kinda wondering about that one - there was a big fuss when Dani played Martina N earlier in the year coz the later is her mentor. Never mind. You're a great Dani fan, Quasimodo.

Hantuchova is having a hard time right now face to Husarova who beat her once. Dani rallyed back from 1-4 to win the set 7-6 (7-5).
It' not a live score thread but that illustrates Dani's attitude : She fights and fights and fights. Unfortunately I can't see the match on TV but I easily imagine that Daniela's not playing very well today. But tennis specialists often say that the mark of great champions is the abilty to win matches even when they don't play well.

Heheheh...no problem Quasi....you are nonetheless a wonderful ambassador for Daniela! Woo hoo.....great win by Daniela. She has to be confident playing Dementieva again after last week!

You never know...
Elena is very dangerous but so inconsistent, she was one of my faves after she reached semis in USO 2000, since then I got pissed off with her unforced errors.
Hopefully she won't be on a good day against Dani : I want to see how the latter would manage such a tough draw (probably Mauresmo in 1/4, Cappy or Dokic on 1/2...).

As an Hantuchova unconditionnal fan, I have a big question that prevents me to sleep (I exagerate of course) :
I noticed on this forum and on the GoTennis forum that Daniela bashing posts were always written by Williams fans, anybody can give me an explanation about that ?

I think it's just a couple clueless dorks. Most of the Williams fans I've met, have very Nice things to say about Dani & I think there's a lot of Nice things you could say about Venus & Rena, not to mention a bunch of other players.

IMHO, It's just a few people can't handle a player other then their favorites being successful, so they have to try & pull them down.

By the way Freefall, "DANIELA = #1" is what I wish from all my heart too but, like Dani, I'm a bit superstitious and I'm afraid your writning it as a signature might give her bad luck LMAO :p

wonderful post!

I too saw Daniela for the first time at Wimbledon 2001. After Venus won her first round match, Navratilova said something like "Venus will play a very tough player"

I thought it would be an interesting match. Venus was clearly the better player on the day she beat Hantuchova 63 62, but I saw so much talent.

I didn't hear much from Hantuchova again, until the Canadian Open. I live in Canada, so we get all the coverage. I believe it was Day 3, first match. Daniela vs. Jennifer Capriati. I thought Jennifer would steamroll. Well, Daniela was up 75 41, before pressure got to her, I'm sure. She hadn't been broke at that point, but she was, and Capriati won 57 75 62. Still, Hantuchova had left her mark.

At that point, I researched Hantuchova, and learned that she had also taken Capriati to three at the IGA indoor event!

In the fall, her results were again, inconsistent. However, she was one of the few players to take a set off Davenport last fall, when she was playing so well.

In January, her results continued, as she took Henin to three at Gold Coast; and then the big one against Venus. Keep in mind Hantuchova had points to go up 54 in the 3rd  Venus said afterwards it was her experience that won her the match.

Tragically, I missed the Indian Wells final, but I was so happy that Daniela broke through. I was saying before the final that if Hingis won, it wouldn't be a big deal, because all the top players weren't there [Davenport, Capriati, Venus, Serena skipped]; but for Daniela it would be huge.

I wish I had the match.

Sorry I'm quoting myself but Once again in Zurich, Hantuchova gave us so many thrills on her matches against Elena D. (won 3-6,7-6,7-6) and against Patty S. (lost 6-3, 6-7, 6-7).
And a funny thing about Patty : she beat her opponents the same score they beat their opponents on the precedent round: Fernandez beat Capriati 6-0, 6-3 and then lost 0-6, 3-6 to Patty Schnyder.

New week now in Linz, I cheer, of course, for Daniela. Come on Dani, grab that #8 spot right now !!!
