after all the hoo-ha, 'she should retire' posts, i finally sat down and watched conchita on eurosport last night - and i was extremely impressed. she hasn't hit top form, but God, she is getting there. the courts are so slow, that it really suits her game, and she made casanova (a v. talented prospect) look like a total novice.

whether she can beat Jenn is irrelevant, after watching that match, i am certain that NO WAY should she even think about retiring. i am V. excited about her prospects in 2003, and with hardly any points to defend, expect her back in the top 20 by april - mark my words!!!

She has been playing better as of late, but if I remember correctly, she's been on the wrong side of some long, tough matches recently.

If she can somehow fix that serve, it would help her a lot.

King Lindsay - i know what you mean about the serve, but at 30 years old - she ain't gonna be changing anything now!!:p

That's very true. Although, I guess she took that serve back to #5 in the world and the French finals just 2 years back, so maybe it isn't that bad.

Gooooooo my 2nd-favorite lesbian!!!!!

:bounce: Conchita; it was so funny to see someone play like Conchita again; all other players play soooooo diferently!

BTW Conchita must have lost a lot of weight; she looked almost slim; or maybe it just looked that way because of clothes that weren't horrible ;)

you're right! she has definitely lost weight, i think it just proves what a professional she is, that she has a slump, and rather than just retire, and fade away, makes a seroius effort to get back to the top! ;) and she will, i'll repeat it agin - expect her back in the top 20 by april!!

WOW CONCHITA! Maya said it all in her post. I wish more girls had Conchita's variety. Look at the Grosjeans and Clements and Santoros of men's tennis. There are many ATP players who deal with LOADS MORE POWER and who still play with great variety. Maggie Maleeva said that creativity was the wave of the future, the tennis of the future. Conchita's game can still win even with her dinky, slicy serve. It's all mental with these types of players. Look at what getting her mind together has done for AMELIE! I am just thrilled that some players with variety like Patty Schnyder, Conchita, Maggie and Amelie are showing people that you don't have to pummel every ball until you pummel your skeletal system into submission to win.

Don't get me wrong. I love power tennis too but HATE power tennis without variety. For me variety is the spice of tennis and power is just one spice on the spice rack. Power is the hot curry for example, whereas finesse is saffron, tactics and court instincts are sage and ginger, defense is salt, net play is cinnamon and surprise is nutmeg. I can't live on curry alone. And pure saffron is just too expensive.

well coool the problem with Conchita is sometimes her lack of focus and confidence, but if she kept up her focus and hard work there is no doubt that she could send some of these power-player-clones back to the junior leagues. She might even get some of them thinking about trying new thin gs. Bedanova, Henin and Mauresmo are players who are trying to add variety to their game. Along with Clijsters to a lesser extent.

sadly I don't know if Conchita could keep it up from one match to the next. Isn't funny how people always talk about the new breed of players but when a player like Mauresmo or Conchita or Rita Grande or Els Callens or even grandma Navratilova or Schnyder comes along and plays their style that people are shocked.

Power is here to stay folks and that's fine but it doesn't mean that using all the shots is not an option.

i'm with the PARTY, conchi played great. she served really well toom glorious slices out wide and down the T to Capriati's 1-dimensional forehand, and hard kickers down the T to the BH. my happiest conchi day in over 2 years. after all these agonising 3-set losses, being so close to turning the corner.

cheers soch and anabel! :)
