Career overview

Junior
Mai Grage has played almost exclusively on the Junior circuit - reaching a career high ranking of #30 earlier in 2010. She has played at all 4 grand slams as a junior, and reached the SF at Roland Garros in doubles this year (with Saisai Zheng). Mai has also won a couple of Junior tournaments incl. the Grade 1 tournament Mediterranee Avenir in 2009 defeating the very talented Monica Puig in the Final.

ITF - WTA
Mai has never played in the main draw of any ITF or WTA tournaments (10K Chiswick today will be her first ever!) but she has tried to qualify a couple of times, for instance at 100K Danish Open in 2008, and at 220K Slovenia Open 2010 where she won in the 1st round of qualification defeating Olga Savchuk (UKR).

FED Cup
Mai played two Fed Cup singles matches for Denmark in 2009 (16 years of age at the time), and four singles matches in 2010 - winning her matches vs. Israel and Latvia.

Ambitions
Mai Grage has been part of a special development program at the 'Center of Elite' supported by the Danish Tennis Federation and Team Danmark. Mai Grage has been the best Danish tennis player her age (b. 1992) for some time now and aims at being #10 in the world.

Mai Grage's schedule:

26-01 JUL/AUG: 10K Chiswick
02-08 AUG: 220K Danish Open (Q-wc)
15-21 AUG: Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Juniors)

For some reason unknown to me (maybe because of a tough schedule with travels to South East Asia?) Mai Grage won't play at the Danish Outdoors Championships 09-14 AUG. Neiher does Barbat or Ejdesgaard, so it'll probably be a cakewalk for Hanne Skak...

Malou videre, Mai ude.

Good Luck Mai in Farum! :)

From the official tournament site (http://www.e-bokssonyericssonopen.dk/nyheder/nyheder/2010/7/31/farvel-til-mai-grage.aspx):

Goodbye, Mai Grage

There are no more matches for Mai Grage in this year's e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open. Saturday night the young Dane lost in qualification to the Australian Johanna Konta 3-6 1-6.

"I am a little disappointed that the match didn't last longer - that I did not win more games, but it was a great experience and nice to play there, and I believe I hit the ball very well," said Mai Grage after the match.

It's just her second WTA tournament after her debut in qualifying for the Slovenia Open a few weeks ago. Back then Mai Grage won one match, but although the great result from Slovenia could not be repeated in Farum, Mai Grage did not leave the arena empty-handed.

"Every time I play these matches I learn so much, also gamewise - and I see, that I can play in such high pace," said Mai Grage, who hopes to return for next year's Danish WTA tournament.

Copenhagen doubles draw, 1st round:

Goerges/Groenefeld (1) vs. Klemenschits/Klepac
Kondratieva/Lefevre vs. Barbat/Grage

Maria Kondratieva (RUS) (28 years of age) is a doubles specialist - ranked #933 in singles but #54 in doubles. She was in the doubles final at 220K Istanbul a few days ago!

Sophie Lefevre (FRA) (29 years of age) is also a doubles specialist (ranked 1033 in singles and 123 in doubles), allthough not quite as good as Kondratieva. Lefevre and Kondratieva have played 10 tournaments together as a team in 2010. A tough match for Barbat/Grage!

Barbat/Grage will probably play Tuesday. Good luck!

Grage/Barbat have never played doubles together, and 1st set was a disaster. Kondratieva/Lefevre were really good and experienced; they always made the right choices in shots and movements. Grage/Barbat managed a bit better in the 2nd set.

Tak for indsatsen; glæder mig til at se jer igen!

I see that Mai is not playing US Open Junior's so I guess Roland Garros, was her last junior tournament (other than youth olympics)?
I guess so. I remember reading a Danish article - probably from the beginning of 2010 or end of 2009 where Mai Grage said she would play 100% on the Junior circuit throughout 2010 just to see how far it would bring her. I guess good Junior results can be some kind of shortcut to the pro circuit...

But with her present (mediocre) Junior rankings and her recent success at ITF/WTA I guess she might as well set her mind on the pro circuit! But I haven't read anything official about it. (She does have a schedule online (http://www.dtftennis.dk/Sektioner/Elite/Landshold/Aktivitetsplan%20ITF%20Gruppe%201.aspx) at The Danish Tennis Federation, and Youth Olympics is indeed the last tournament scheduled in 2010).

Mai Grage was awarded Danish Junior tennis player of the year 2010 (for the 2nd consecutive year). Full article here (http://www.dtftennis.dk/Nyheder/2010/December/Mai.aspx) (in Danish).

2010 was her last season as a junior, and there's no doubt she was the most succesful among the Danish juniors in 2010. She has played three Grand slams with the French Open Semi final in the doubles being the highlight of the season. She also played in the Youth Olympics in Singapore, and she earned her first WTA points with a surprising win over Olga Savchuk at Portoroz.

Here is a video with Mai Grage at the awards talking about the past season and the future:

http://www.on-sport.dk/video/916173/rets-juniortennisspiller-mai

She says she'll try to work her way up in the rankings on the pro tour - obviusly starting at the lowest level. But she hopes it will be a fast ride! And she hopes she can play on the Danish Fed Cup team in Israel in February. Since Barbat is most likely not interested (and Malou injured) Mai Grage's participation seems very realistic. And she has played on the Fed Cup team already in 2010, of course.

Well deserved award. Actually 2009 was a better year for Mai than 2010 but she still made some progress, played well in Italy in the summer and got herself established on the senior curcuit. The other nomenees (Simon and Cecilie) will for sure be favorites for the award in the coming years so they should not feel too sorry ;)

Mai Grage defeated Karen Barbat today when her team Lyngby defeated Barbat's Birkerød 5-4 in the semi final at the Danish indoor club championships. I had expected Barbat to win this match but well done by Mai Grage to win in what seems to have been a tough three set match:

Lyngby - Birkerød 5-4
1st ladies singles: Mai Grage def. Karen Barbat 6-1 6-7 7-5

Mai Grage's club Lyngby will play KB in the final tomorrow, and Grage will probably face KB's Hanne Skak Jensen in the 1st ladies singles match. Multiple Danish champion Hanne Skak Jensen will be the favourite, of course.

Well, KB decided to use one of their foreign 'wild card' players in the final today, so Mai Grage was up against Swedish Sofia Arvidsson in the 1st ladies' singles match:

Timea Bacsinszky/Patty Schnyder (SWI) def. Caroline Wozniacki/Mai Grage 6-3 6-2

Expected loss but a decent scoreline under these circumstances: Mai has not played any matches at all in 2011, and she and Caroline are a completely new team.

Switzerland won the Fed Cup match 2-1, and also won the group. Denmark will have to defeat Great Britian tomorrow, or else they have to play relegation matches.

Heather Watson/Jocelyn Rae (GBR) def. Grage/Wozniacki 5-7 7-5 7-5

It was a close match and Grage played extremely well. According to Michael Mortensen this was the best he has ever seen her play in a doubles match. Good luck in the relegation match against Greece :yeah:

Eleni Daniilidou/Eirini Georgatou (GRE) def. Grage/Wozniacki 6-2 7-5

I'm not 100% sure but I beleive Denmark had a lead in the second set (5-2 or something?). It's a disappointing result, but I'm sure Mai and Caro did the best they could. The Greek team was simply better.

I hope Mai will get going at the ITF futures. She said earlier this year, or at the end of last year, that she wants to commit herself 100% this season to improve her ranking. Good luck.

Mai Grage quits her pro career!

Excerpted and paraphrased translation (full article in Danish here (http://www.tennis.dk/Nyheder/2011/Februar/Grage%20neddrosler%20den%20professionelle%20karrie re.aspx))

Mai Grage ends her pro career. She wants to study, and also finds it lonely on the pro tour. She still loves playing tennis, and she'll continue to play in Denmark an try to win Danish titles. She'll also continue on the Fed cup team. She says she may possibly try the pro tour agian later in her career...

Too bad. Mai is probably the most talented among the Danish girls from the years immediately after Caroline...

Poor decision by Mai and a disaster for Danish tennis. She really had a chance to make to top-100. Very sad indeed :(

What a shame. I really thought she could become at least a solid top 200 player  It's not looking good for Danish tennis if we don't consider Caroline, but I hope Martine Ditlev, Cecilie Melsted and Simone Alipieva can turn into great players.

Mai Grage won the 2nd part of the Danish Grand prix series at Århus this weekend in a very convincing manner:

1R: Mai Grage (Lyngby) def. Ella Hedeboe (Gentofte) 6-0 6-1
2R: Mai Grage (Lyngby) def. Sofie Skovbo Jensen (Helsingør) 6-0 6-0
QF: Mai Grage (Lyngby) def. Stefanie Jolak (Holbæk) 6-1 6-0
SF: Mai Grage (Lyngby) def. Julie Noe (KB) 6-2 6-0
F: Mai Grage (Lyngby) def. Martine Ditlev (TC Odense) 6-0 6-0

It must be said though, that Sandra Roma (Sweden) who won the first tournament in the series, had to give a walkover in the semi final in the other half of the draw. She would easily have gone to the final, and would probably be the favourite against Mai Grage (Sandra Roma defeated Mai two weeks ago). Melsted was also missing (because of ITF in Sweden), and a also few other of the best Danish women . Anyway, seeing how far above everyone else Mai is here makes it all the more depressing that she won't play international pro tennis anymore. I mean, losing only four games in five matches! Well done!

Mai Grage is on the acceptance list for $10,000 Helsingborg (http://www.itftennis.com/procircuit/tournaments/women's-tournament/info.aspx?tournamentid=1100028331), Sweden, next week (18-24 February). Probably playing qualies tomorrow (Saturday).

Mai hasn't played at an ITF pro tournament since 2010! It would be nice if she started playing pro tennis again. GL!

That's interesting. Mai and Maria have fought some really hard matches in Denmark - almost always with Mai as the winner. Maria has such a big serve.
