thinking about it qualies might be great for anna. it means she will be back on court by saturday and hopefully should she come through qualies she will be on a 8 match win streak and brim full of confidence to do some damage in the MD.

was Kosinska one of the Polish players she beat in Warsaw qualies earlier this year, or...?

no it wasn't kosinska.

ok im not 100% of the rules, but there has been a player pull out of the MD (groth) so now theres 4 Q places and a LL spot. in regular WTA events the highest ranked players to lose in the final round of qualies that signs in for LL spots makes the MD. so if chak wins today, as long as she signs in for a LL spot, shes garenteed to be in the MD.

someone cprrect me if im wrong.

This was posted in GM by Andreas (http://www.tennisforum.com/member.php?u=54927) who was there.

Okay, here is my report from day 2 of this amazing event:

4. A. Chakvetadze def. K. Kosinska 62 61
- I was looking forward to watching Chakvetadze but it turned out to be a disappointment. She was making a lot of sloppy errors. Kosinska was horrible and she would react negatively on any point – no matter if she won or lost it. It was clear that Chakvetadze didn’t have to do her best today, though, so I’m expecting her to step it up when she gets some better opponents.

Hmmm, doesn't sound as good as the score suggested.

sammy01
Aug 2nd, 2010, 12:08 AM
i wont read much into that report, as it is hard to play well when you are totally a class above your opponent, it often drags your game down.

Chakvenus

That was closer than I expected. I'm sure Johanna and her coach had a very close look at what went wrong for her in the final last week before this.

Lapushchenkova just had a convincing win over Pironkova. But I think her game is the sort that Chaky can take apart when she's playing well. She's good at absorbing pace and Lapush has an attackable serve if I remember rightly.

yikess Hercog really could put an end to her streak.
i just hope for Anna to feel her shots and fight as hard as she did today. one positive thing i feel she has gained from her extended slump is to never take any win for granted. This is why i think she has rediscovered her old fight. Before (2007 and prior) she fought because she was young, restless, and determined to go higher. Then, as her slump took over it almost seemed like she kept becoming content with where she was ranked. Finally her ranking slipped so badly that she really started to put in the effort and it is really paying off. Anna may be tired tomorrow with all her recent matches, but i feel confident that she will still give Hercog her all.

to me it is, chak isn't ready yet to take on the top 10, and bigger tournaments the draws can be brutual, so it is good to play somewhere you know you wont face anyone ranked higher than 40.

I agree with Chakvenus: I thought Anna might struggle because she looked tired yesterday. But she only got broken once it seems, although she did 6 DFs and only 2 aces. Straight sets is good news, can't complain at all.

Looking forward to watching the match tomorrow.

She was serving very accurately especially in the second set. Hercog could hardly attack her serve. She will have to have to try something different for the last 2 matches because her previous opponents made a lot of errors to help her.

Chakvenus
Aug 6th, 2010, 05:56 PM
^ So true Chakbelle. Anna isn't going to be able to rely on the self-destruction of her opponents against Wozniacki (against Li/Zakopalova in the final she TOTALLY can, but we'll see if she gets there ;) )
i hope she realizes that this match will be in HER hands and that she needs to take it to Caro, but consistently. The ball-basher game she used in their only previous matches won't cut it here. Besides, Caro may be ranked way higher but their previous matches have been close, so i really don't see any obvious reason for Anna to lose this if she is focused, healthy, and playing her game.

Anna into SF!;):bounce:

Wish I could have seen the match.:sobbing:
But Anna won. And that`s most important.

Next Wozniacki.
Wozniacki leads Head To Head 2-0:
2008 NEW HAVEN: C. Wozniacki 3-6 6-4 6-1
2008 MOSCOW: C. Wozniacki 2-6 6-1 6-4

Good luck in SF, Anna!

Now it becomes like a Premier tournament, because Wozniacki and Li would be in San Diego normally.

Indeed.

This is the business end of this tournament.
Anna is much better in front of big noisy crowds than the players Wozniacki is beating

Should be good.

So Anna wont win by trying to outhit Woz, but Benesova and Gorges did well against her by blasting winners and making her run. She also wont win by playing safe because Woz can outpush anyone. So what cunning plan will Team Anna come up with?

Errors in first set probably determined the match. Thought Woz would get tired after so many 3 set matches, but she did just enough in the end. Anna really improved in last 2 sets and played aggressively enough to win but it was very close in the end. Best thing is she will go into matches against top players and know she can beat them.

Caro bt. Anna 6-1 2-6 6-4

 Too many errors from Anna. She just let it slip at the end of the third set. I'm sure she'll be really annoyed with herself about that.

On the plus side, look how close she took the world #3. :) It's very encouraging for the rest of the year.

Anna's new ranking will be #63, up 11 places.

For me these last couple of weeks of success for Anna, including a 10 match winning streak and another title, has been worth the wait. A nice way for me to celebrate hitting my 6000th post and 5th anniversary of joining this forum. :D

Congrats on 6000th post! I was thinking after that awful first set I will be happy if she just makes the second set close, but when she came so close to winning its disappointing. Woz didnt have to extend herself a whole lot. She just keeps the errors down and attacks occasionally. I would be surprised if she makes it past USO qf. If Anna is on form she should not lose to her. Its great to see how much game she has now compared to a few weeks ago.

So sad Anna lost! i was reading some comments in GF and people said that Anna played better and there were many bad calls!! is that true??

Break My Rapture
Aug 7th, 2010, 09:13 PM
Yup it was true. At *4-4 30-40 in the third set, Anna was dominating the rally and went for the big shot to finish it off, it was clearly in (the line judge thought the same way) but the dumb umpire overruled. Giving the break to Caro. :o

I'm not too disappointed by this result and I think that also Anna can be satisfied of what she makes in the last weeks.

Yes, a win today was better, but Anna play really well and at the same level of Wozniacki, also I don't think she makes a bad 1st set, until 1-4 we have a lot of combacted points.

I hope and think that finally Anna is back and the ranking will be better in the next Months, only continue to play like this and a good result in US Open is granted (if she avoid top players in the start of Tournament).

CRAP! too bad about all those bad calls! still great week for chak!! :) i think the Woz is hot but don't like the fact that Anna is trailing 0-3 in their head to head when she's much more talented than Caro!!

I'm not disappointed with this loss. She's playing better I could not think about 10 wins in a row one year ago. I'm very proud.

She has the talent, she has the game, she can do it. Hope she has a good draw at USO to try keep it up. BTW she has nothing to defend until Pattaya next year . Yeah, she has some points to defend in NW, but I think she can gain a lot points until end of the year.

Aug 7th, 2010, 11:45 PM
she had another really good tournament. making the semis as a qualifier was a great effort.

she can only take positives from this week and be confident that shes heading back in the right direction!

Im impressed by how she can look so awful in the first set, unable to keep the ball inside the lines, then suddenly everything clicks and she starts hitting winners all over. She has been doing it a few times in Slovenia and she would have won again here if she had not been playing a top 10 player. It seemed to change after the coach came out and told her to move better. Her run of form has come just when he appeared, so if he has been largely responsible for it then I am really excited about the possibilities.
