Analyzing the last 2 matches I come to conclusion that what we tend to call "worse form" is in reality a part of new tactics.
In the last months Aga was winning quickly and dominantly her first matches against lesser players only to be eliminated fighting against first tough opponent.Easy wins(many sets 6:0 or 6:1) were somehow disheartening her.
Now she's preparing herself to tough fight by playing quiet percentage tennis in the first rounds. Defensive play decides that matches are longer and she starts to dominate only at the end when opponents are weary. She's now winning TB's and third sets It seems to me reasonable tactics of preparation for decisive fight.

While I might agree with you, I rather prefer to "wait and see"... We will certainly be able to draw better conclusions after her first "toughest" match. But I have to say it seems quite reasonable to me; for someone who hasn't played in hardcourts for quite some time, long early rounds are exactly watch she needs to get match practice. And maybe she starts to get used to "hard games" as well, because, as you pointed out, easy early rounds don't seem to work at all for her... :)

Did you notice that Aga has anew the positive statistics concerning defence of BP.
It was characteristic for her in 2006-2007 period when she was climbing in Rankings.
In decisive games she is also very effective contrary to 2009 when she was losing most TB's and third sets.

Comments from Aga and Sharapova::p

http://www.bankofthewestclassic.com/matchupdatecalendar/2010_Bank_of_the_West_Classic/Player_Quotes_July_30th.htm

Agnieszka Radwanska:

“I think the first set was the key in this match. It was very close, very long and I think she was upset losing that first set. I felt much more comfortable in the second set, knowing that I was one set ahead. When I was up 3-0 in the second set, I knew I was in a good spot. But you still have to be very focused up until the last point.”

“I’m looking forward to being in the second week of the U.S. Open. Last year, I was injured so I don’t have very good memories from the U.S. Open. So this year I just want to play good and hopefully make the second week.”

Maria Sharapova:

“She (Radwanska) is a great retriever and a challenging player because she is very tricky. She has a lot of different tricks in her bag. She can play really aggressive or mix it up and throw a change of pace. I will really have to be on top of my game.”

Can`t wait for the match!!!

Ula was moving ok-ish. She did touch her back a little at the end but nothing too bad. She lost almost every rally when they were exchanging from the baseline. She tried too many drop shots from too far back. She played better at the end of the 1st set. When she got broken at the start of the 2nd she started to serve and volley and get really frustrated. I heard her say after the match to someone who asked "How was your match?" and she said "Pretty bad but at least I'm playing"

saul1333
Aug 5th, 2010, 07:18 AM
Aga was ok today. Dinara looked bad at the start and Aga was playing really good defense and made her play worse. Once Dinara was doing 1st serves at like 80 mph Aga started hitting really good returns and started serving better herself. In the 2nd set she was bringing Dinara in and passing her easily. She got a little frustrated at the end and made some cute expressions :inlove: And she gave a nice interview at the end  She was in a better mood than her last match. Her practices have been very short so far and they always end the same..with her yelling at her dad and walking off the court with her rackets

At night, No.4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska pulled off the quickest victory of the day, taking exactly an hour to dispatch No.7 seed Shahar Peer, 62 60. From 3-2 in the first set, Radwanska won nine straight games for a surprisingly lopsided win against someone she has a losing record against (now 2-3).

"I knew she was good in rallies so I stayed aggressive and went for it," Radwanska said. "I'm excited to be in my second semifinal in a row and I'm ready for the next one. I will have to play 100% against Daniela. We've always had tight matches. It's always game by game and always a long fight."

I also just had the opportunity to see the whole match on Eurosport Portugal, and I couldn't help but notice that the portuguese Eurosport tennis comentator for the match (a guy called Miguel Seabra, I guess) seemed to have a huge crush on Aga's game.
When she made that point to make it 5-2 in the first set, the guy was like: "Wow, incredible! This is a tennis lecture, what Radwanska is giving us today!". Even when Shahar made a dropshot ROS in the 2nd set, he was like: "Oh, Shahar finding new solutions and performing a shot that was worthy of someone like Radwanska!"... I was cracking out laughing on my sofa, and he went on with comparisons with Martina Hingis and Chris Evert, saying how refreshing was her game and whatnot... Just loved it!

Let's see if she can keep it up tonight!

“She was serving very good on those (match) points,” Radwanska said. “I was wondering if she could just miss a serve. I tried everything, but she was just better in that game. We just played every shot that is possible.”

When asked why she’s been playing well all week, Radwanska said, “I was practicing a lot in Poland before I came here and I’ve been feeling good and everything’s been working so I’m hoping for one more.”

Radwanska now faces Svetlana Kuznetsova in the finals and although she is 3-6 lifetime versus the Russian, one figures that Kuznetsova will have to overpower the speedy Radwanksa to win the title. Radwanska when asked about her chances against Kuznetsova said, “I have to play a hundred percent of my game because she is just too good to play any worse so I will try.”

Aga Reaches Final, Sveta Next

...

Next for Kuznetsova will be No.4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who ended the run of Daniela Hantuchova with a 64 62 victory under the lights. Hantuchova had upset No.6 seed Marion Bartoli en route to the semifinals.

"She's a fighter. She was mixing it up a lot and playing a lot of dropshots. I think we played every shot possible in tennis," Radwanska said. "I'm happy to be in a final again, especially at a big tournament like this. Sveta is a great player and I have to play at 100% because she's too good if I play any worse."

Like Kuznetsova, Radwanska will be playing her first final since Beijing last fall, where she lost to the Russian. That was the pair's ninth and most recent career meeting, and Kuznetsova leads Radwanska in their head-to-head, 6-3.

Not rarely do people talk about being gracious on defeat, but I really enjoy the way Aga behaves after her wins. She could just brag about how good she played and how she outmaneuvered her opponent in such an exemplar fashion, but she always prefers to mention how hard and close the match was, praising her opponents abilities and giving them credit for their performances (even when the scoreline looks lopsided). That's quite cool...

Let's see how she deals with Kuzzy tonight!

Aga lost

There were some unbelievable mistakes from Sveta, but on the other hand Aga had a hard time, too. Net approaches didn't work at all and dropshots didn't work either. Aga just couldn't make the game look as she wanted. She was very lucky, but not lucky enough to win.
The positive thing is that she made 6 aces. Users here were laughing, that some of them were 90 MPH. I don't get it, an ace is an ace, perhaps slower aces are more interesting than fast ones.

I think that Aga has improved her serve a lot and she hits the ball harder than before. Plus, she's good on the net and has a great movement. It's a pleasure to watch her.

Anyways guys, I am now proud to call myself an Aga fan. I really haven't seen her play that much in the past but I have been so impressed the last two weeks with her play. She is NOT another pusher like Caroline, she has actual good craft. It also doesn't hurt that she's Polish and I am part Polish as well.

I just really like this girls game.

Aga was not 100% fit. and uncharacteristically inefficent having BP
But her weakness was mostly result of great play by Sveta (so many winners, so little UE's)
One thing I don't like however are those "breaks" of Sverta taken after losing sets and power
She comes back full of energy. Interesting

Once Papa Robert stated that Agnieszka's little slump was due to the fact that Ula was injured - now that she is playing again and probably practising with Aga, maybe Agnieszka found her game and confidence.

But big fight from Aga.

So what was the difference?
Kuznetsova was more powerful. And break point conversion:
Aga took only 3 of 12!

What a crazy match!:rolls:
Kuznetsova had four match points in TB of 2nd set - 6-3, 6-4, 6-5, 7-6!

Aga can be very proud of her efforts the last 2 weeks:

Interview

TDF Talks to Agnieszka Radwanska at Cincinnati All-Access Hour

The highlight of Monday's Access Hour here at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open for me was a brief chat with Agnieszka Radwanska, the seventh seeded Polish player who recently made the semifinals of Stanford and the final in Los Angeles.

The two of us talked about the US Open series, her cockroach-like stay in the top ten, doubles, and playing the Polish men against each other.

TDF: You're a leader now in the US Open series with your good runs in Stanford and Los Angeles. Now that you see yourself atop the leaderboard, do you want to win the whole thing now?

Agnieszka Radwanska: Oh for sure, you know, I think everyone wants to win this competition. But there are still three tournaments, and I'm playing just two of them, not New Haven. But if I play good tennis like I was playing the last two weeks, then I have a good chance to be atop the list.

TDF:You've been consistently in the top ten for a long time now. With all these other players going up and down, what has been the key to you hanging in there?

Agnieszka Radwanska: Yeah, well to be top ten, you have to play a lot of good tournaments, not just one or two. I'm just trying to stay there, and playing Doha every year. And with a lot of players coming back, like Clijsters and Sharapova, it's hard to be top eight, but I'll try.

TDF: You're not playing here, but you've recently been playing a lot of doubles with Maria Kirilenko. Are you two planning to keep on playing together in the future?

Agnieszka Radwanska: Well, I love playing doubles, and I would love to play everywhere, but it's too much when it's tournaments one week and then the next. Of course, you never know how you're going to do, you could lose first round, and then it's time for doubles, but it's already too late for the sign-up. I will play doubles in Montreal in Montreal with Maria Kirilenko--we're playing together all year, but I'm just playing the big events. At the small events, it's just too much for my body. Two matches a day, it's a lot.

TDF: There are a bunch of Polish men's players who've done well in doubles recently. Have you thought at all about who you might like to play with at the Olympics in 2012? Have any of them talked to you yet?

Agnieszka Radwanska: (laughs) Well, we are good friends, all of us. There are three guys, [Lukasz Kubot, Mariusz Fyrstenberg, Marcin Matkowski] so...the Olympics are not tomorrow, they are not next week, so there's still time. It's going to be a tough decision. And also, it's going to be tough to play singles, doubles, and mixed doubles in one week, so I will have to think about it really hard, what to do.

TDF: You'll probably play women's doubles with your sister?

Agnieszka Radwanska: Yeah, of course, we'll try to get in.

TDF: Do you enjoy the idea of the three men competing over you?

Agnieszka Radwanska: (laughs)

TDF: Have any of them sent flowers or anything?

Agnieszka Radwanska: (laughs) No, no. Not yet!

TDF: But you're open to bribes and gifts?

Agnieszka Radwanska: (laughs) Yeah, yeah, for sure. We haven't even talked about it, since it's still two years away.

TDF: Well good luck, I hope you get lots of stuff.

Agnieszka Radwanska: Lots of roses right? (laughs)

Yes she did, anyone watching? It seems that Agnieszka is again not herself, tentative and killing her intuition, but what do I know I am just watching scoreboard.

Yup, must agree that I don't recall seeing her deliver such a poor performance in quite some time... Watched almost the whole match and I really hope the explanation lies on some kind of troubled movement (due to that foot issue she had in the San Diego final)... Otherwise, I'm afraid I would have to say that it was another one of those "classic" performances where she doesn't show any belief at all, like she was acknowledging that her opponent is unbeatable or whatever...
The point where Sharapova made the break for 3-2 in the second set was exasperating... Radwanska approached the net and Sharapova makes a huuuuuuuge lob from the baseline. It took ages to land on the other side and Aga just stood beside the net, waiting for the ball to hit the court on her side; needless to say, the ball hit the line, Aga looked to the ground and walked to her chair... It almost gave me the impression that she could reach that ball even if she just walked towards the baseline, but no reaction at all...

Too bad that she had a good chance to reach the semi's again (facing Bartoli in the quarters), but it's been a good run in the US open series, nevertheless...

mateusz2904
Aug 12th, 2010, 10:04 PM
Really bad performance from Agnieszka... Her service sucked... Maybe she tried to hit it harder, to make it more chellenging for Sharapova, but nothing good came from this... After Aga's 1st serve points looked completely different... Sharapova wasn't playing good too, so Agnieszka had opportunities to make this result look better, even win 2nd set...
But it's the past, now she should concentrate on Montreal;) I think she's going to play doubles with Kirilenko there;)

Watched yesterday Aga first time since Wimbledon. Heard many good things about Aga's play in two previous tournaments, but last match didn't impress me. She must have played much worse, she looked to be in physical crisis. Maybe it's just weather, but probably tired of much playing lately. And why is she playing third tournament in a row? She has no plans of going far in USO?

It's definitely no shame losing to Maria, but every time Aga's playing her, I have a feeling Sharapova is a dream opponent for Radwańska. If only Aga played like she could, the end score should be reverse. But yesterday not that was the case.

You can tell she was in bad physical condition, you can tell she didn't believe she could win this match. But telling truth, Aga has no chance against players who have a day when they hit 29013200123 winners in a match (look at Na Li in Wimby, Kuzzy and Sharapova). Anyway, I hope her good run doesn't finish like it was when she faced Venus in Miami.

Pszczelny
Aug 13th, 2010, 02:17 PM
Aga's opponents are hitting winners, when she allows them. If she's aggressive, they can't execute Aga. And by aggressive I don't mean hitting winners, but playing fast long balls, to the lines, to make them run, to keep them away. Those strong physically players always have problems then, they try to hit winners from crazy positions and are "forced" to unforced errors. Aga proved she is able to play it, but she does it not as often as she should.

You are exactly right and this is why I think Agnieszka has a chance beating them all; I mean it ALL, but she often becomes different in those matches. She doubts her intuition and is tentative with her game. I know I said it before, but this eliminates her top strength which is intuition. She cannot win without it.

I don't question that (because it can't be questioned), but the truth is that Sharapova didn't play a great match yesterday, it's not like she wasn't giving any chances; in fact, she seemed to be quite erratic too. Like I said, all in all, it's been a great run in the US Open series for Aga, and we hope it can continue this way, but the fact is that (whatever the reason was) she wasn´t putting a lot of heart and soul in this match. But it's her career, her calls, her decisions, so we can just speculate...

Aga in The Gazette/Montreal
No. 7 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, one of the lesser-known players in the top 10, also isn’t aiming too high.

“I think I’m enjoying my game, I’m top 10 for quite a while. Everybody is looking for one more step, like always playing the Masters at the end of the year,” said Radwanska, of Poland, who has Kuznetsova, Aravane Rezai and Elena Dementieva in her quarter.

Higher than that, even? A Grand Slam title? The No. 1 ranking?

“Higher? Of course,” she said. “But it’s not that easy.”

Well done, Aga!:cheer:

Aga is so consistent at the moment, so strong mentally.
Not like headcase Petrova who manages to lose the 3rd set 4-6 from 4-1 up.
And only uses 4 of 23 break points.

LOVE you, Aga!:D

One can really rely on you!

Now do your best vs Kuznetsova!

The worst thing about this defeat is that this match was winnable as Sveta wasn't even close to her best form, I wouldn't be so dissapointed if Agnieszka lost after a very good play against an opponent who was playing out of her mind. Still, Aga

BTW, has Aga won any match this year after losing the 1st set?
Every time when it comes to the 3rd set in a match in which Aga lost the 1st one, I always have a bad feeling that she is going to lose it  :/ I don't even remember the last match she won after losing the 1st set

By the way, I've wrote a pessimistic comment about Agnieszka, that's quite unusual

English commentators said a lot of good things about Aga. They admired her for improving service, not just 'pushing', but also trying to play her game, hitting harder, taking much risk.

There was too much drop shots, sometimes it isn't good idea to send one by one.

In my opinion Aga played good match. She was fighting and trying to be better. Just look what she did in 2nd set, Kuzi was powerless, she won just one game because Aga had some troubles with the sun while serving. Radwanska hit so many winners, sometimes she wins a set with only 4 or 5, so these statistics are the sign of a change in her game. She was even really close to win it, the game with 5 bps missed by Aga decided, I guess. And she won one more point than Kuzi:p

I'm not good with explaining my thoughts in English, but hope you all know that Agnieszka isn't a God for me. But today I really think she wasn't playing bad.

Nothing against Kuznetsova, but I`m so sick of Aga losing to her.:(
She is really starting to annoy me.
Sexlana always makes the important points and wins.

Aga made one more point in the match.:ras:

Break Points Won:
Aga: 5 of 16
Kuz: 5 of 7

It was a tough draw.

Better luck in doubles with Kiri, Aga!:)

Agnieszka does look better than in the beginning of the season, but she is not quite there yet. I hope it will change soon.

I guess that what Agnieszka needs is to keep a good level of play during the whole match, not just a part of it. She surely knows how to play really well, at times she playes great, but she is often not able to play so well during whole match. Against King she played great in the 1st set, but in the 2nd set she played much worse comparing to what she showed earlier. Against Kuznetsova she played a good 2nd set, the beginning of the 3rd set was simply great, but then, don't know why, she started to miss quite easy shots. I guess it's difficult for her to keep the same level of concentration during the whole match.
