Here are some of the notable in attendance:
Dinara Safina (http://www.onthebaseline.com/2010/07/10/victoria-azarenka-dinara-safina-given-bank-of-the-west-classic-wildcards/)is absolutely crushing balls today – but really, should that come as a surprise? What is surprising, or at least interesting – maybe ironic is the best word – is that Zelko Krajan was on the court right next to her. Zelko was keeping an eye on his new player, Dominika Cibulkova (http://www.onthebaseline.com/2008/12/18/beyond-the-baseline-with-dominika-cibulkova/), but he did shoot a few glances in Safina’s direction.

Yeah, or at least "skip 2010 and come back strong in 2011". I mean, that's the best she could do now, I don't see her winning anything in this season. In some weeks her back pains again, she takes a break and comes back too early. So this season is ruined anyway. And if she doesn't change anything in this behaviour she also ruins next season or even her career.

She needs to play little tournaments where she can win matches.
But that would mean a lot of tennis and stress on her back.

So I think losing early every week is best for her long term health

It was sad wen I saw the result in the morning. May be she is not completely fit...but she wouldnt have come back if she feels uncomfortable. She needs more match practice may be, playing in small tournaments would help her I guess. Dinara:hug:

Here's what Matt Cronin had to tweet about Dinara:

Who knows when Safina is going to be able to tough out a 3 setter against a decent player. Goes down to Date Krumm again.

Just talked to Safina who said she reinjured back at Wimbledon and had 3 weeks of rehab. Feels better now & has no choice but to be patient.

Safina says other players no longer fear her and she has to earn their respect again.

After talking to Safina last night, I think her problems are more physical than mental now. Will post something later

Jul 27th, 2010, 08:32 PM
Maybe. The problem is that if the back is still bad she's also physically not able to play very well. So she loses and it screws up her head even more
These losses won't help her. On the contrary. So I still say no.1 priority has to be to fix the back and then she should play maybe smaller tournaments to gain some confidence (which is a problem this year 'cause she was top 10 in the beginning of the year).

the same bullshit again and again everywhere...
what smaller tournaments? is kimiko effin date a top10 paleyr? how many top10-20 player Dinara have played since stuttgart???????????????????????????? 0.000000000000000000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! noone
She can meet Kimiko-like players even ITF tournaments but she couldn't win that either.
She is injured since a year. No, she is not healthy, i can't... i won't belive hers bullshits. She can't train properly since a year. That means she is out of form. and if she re-injure herself every week, she won't be better, that sure.

she is losing matches because of her head and because of her body. Not 50-50%, but still. And doesn't matter how incredibely strong or bad she is mentaly, till she can't do her practice full time for long. And that takes time, and that is why this rushing piss me off. (i even tweeted her a jerky one. shame on me.)

Which was awesome  a bit harsh perhaps but hey i guess that's how people should start talking to her from now on . I mostly loved the ' You just don't want to face it !!! ' part :p
One can hope that to keep losing will make her at some point rethink everything she has done for a while...

For me it's not about patience , i have that and i've done it already , i know she can come back at her best , hell we haven't even seen her best yet (or perhaps we did back in 08 )even when she was #1 she still had so much more room to improve ! What bothers me is the road she's taking to get to that point...or eventually lose herself along the way.

Perhaps, but still she's dealing with it in her own terms, i don't agree with what she's been doing either but what's the point in thinking of what would be best for her and what she should do since she obviously won't do it ? It's annoying to keep reading that because so and so did that, Dinara should follow.

I think eventually she will have to drop down, because of her ranking.
That's why Anna played small events. She was out of the top 100
Dinara is now #89 in the race

It's a forum so by definition people will post their opinions. It's not like we have any haters of Dina in here, as Bruce says people who post here just would like for Dina to figure out her game. Different posters will disagree on what the right path is of course. But I understand, Dinara just played so badly, it's hard to be in a good mood. Personally I think that instead of dropping down she just needs to rest more and come back fully prepared, which is an opinion shared with many other users I believe.

Goldenlox has obviously been supporting Dina for some time especially in her cheering thread in the main RR forum, and only has Dina's interests at heart. But I think different people feel like doing different things when players they support lose. Some people like to analyse the situation to figure out what the player should do, others like to just go away from the forum for a while and not think about the matches at all, some people like to draw comparisons to other players who have been in similar situations but turned it around, which can help you feel positive about your own fave's chances of turning their situation. It just depends on what makes you feel better.

And yes, there will always be repetitiveness in any sports forum, because as Bruce mentions situations repeat themselves in tournaments. Also people have certain beliefs and opinions, and so each of their posts over a year or so will reflect these same beliefs and opinions. For anyone with a lot of posts, I'm sure there is a lot of repetition of the same ideas and opinions, unless of course their opinions change, which sometimes happens.

Vanessa you obviously would prefer not to discuss what Dina should do for the moment, which is fine. If it won't make you feel better, you don't need to do it. But I understand, sometimes someone types something and you feel like you need to reply, but you don't really want to talk about it because the whole situation makes you mad. In this situation I tend to go somewhere else, leave the forum for a while, but everyone has their own way of doing things.

Dinara is just doing what other players do, like Ivanovic.
You have to drop down to win matches, and then work your way back up to Premier events

The difference of course being that Dinara is restricted because she was Top 10 at the beginning of the year. Even if she wanted to drop down now, she couldn't. She's just going to have to tough it out and then wait until she can have more flexibility in where she plays.

Anyway, I wasn't around to follow this match at all, but ugh, it sounds horrific. It was nice to see her get a win, but it's hard to judge off of that. Frankly, from what I've seen in the training videos, her hitting has looked a mess, so I'm not that optimistic.

oh, whatever........ Dinara must be the world biggest mazochist. first "real" player since clay comeback. Okay, 2nd if we count Pee too. And she got two easy spanking. If she struggling with players like Date, Zakopalova, Rybarikova and such... what the fuck she expects? This "needs more match-play" is BS. 1 match every week gives nothing! 2? Almost nothing. And she is really lucky if she gets 2. Rest more, needs time, go back to basics, learn a new serve... blah blah blah.... and i'm gonna write all this shit every week till my heart is beating.

Well, if it's her sciatica acting up, she's fooling herself if she thinks a massage and some tape in a 3 minute MTO will help. You can't massage away or tape up nerve damage.

Honestly, I understand why she wants to compete, but for the billionth time, as someone who's had pretty much exactly this injury, I do not understand why she insists on making the same mistake with her recovery over and over and over and over. The infuriating part is that she doesn't necessarily "have" to retire young because of this injury. What she has to do is give herself enough time to recover, not irrationally rush back just because she misses playing. That's a remarkably immature approach to the situation. Sometimes it's time to grow up and realize you can't have everything you want right away. She doesn't need to be in pain, and she doesn't need to be suffering. She's bringing it on herself.

@DailyForehand

Uh oh, trainer called to court already. Don't know if it's for Safina or Clijsters...

It's for Safina. Before the trainer even arrives, she lays a towel down on the ground, lays on her back, and stretches her legs & twists.

The trainer has Safina stand up and do some bends before having her lay back down. She's working the left leg. Hip maybe?

goldenlox
Aug 12th, 2010, 02:19 AM
Now Safina is lying on her right side, so it's definitely something with Dinara's left hip or the left side of her lower back.

Most of what the trainer is doing is stretching around Safina's left leg, which makes me think it's not just the back that's bothering her.

Wow, out of NOWHERE it started POURING. And I'm outside. Gotta scurry.

Just received confirmation that Dinara Safina's injury (the one she received a medical timeout for) is indeed to her left hip

Rain stopped, and a very wet-looking Lynn walks back on court. A vision in khaki, as always, but her normally immaculate hair took a beating

Sounds to me like a sciatica flare, which feels sometimes like you should be able to stretch it out, but... you can't.Wish I could see the match, cuz Dinarik is putting up a brave fight against an elite player. It was 5-6 1st set, with only ONE break point against Dinara(each gal lost her service once),before Kim broke for the set.........and no,I'm not minimizing the potential seriousness of Dinara's stubbornness here:help:

Not to gloss over the potential end of Dinarik's career if she insists on being hard-headed:help:,but there's no shame in a loss to Clijsters,IMO....Who's probably better than she ever was before.....witness her recent domination of Henin and her shut-down of bad-ass,usually-dominant Serena at the 2009 USO......Just PLEASE,Dinarik, take the break if you need it...and don't be a Mad Scientist Doctor who gives him/herself an insane diagnosis:o

Oh, I don't think it's a lie, I just think, you know, all those things are connected, and so maybe now the problem is "with her hip", but that doesn't mean there's not still a problem with her back. It just means that, for now, the pain is concentrated somewhere else.

Positives: she was doing respectably for one set against Kim. And losing gives her more time to rest. Seriously. Health first Dinara, why are you still playing when you need to call the trainer for every single match? Hip, back, buttocks, upper leg, probably all related as other posters have said.

No, I don't want to take away from it. Her stats were pretty clean, I'm trying to remember... 6W/7UE? And Kim's were something like 12W/16UE. I just refuse to read too much into it, because IMO playing one good set against a rusty, inconsistent opponent is reason for cautious optimism at best. Especially when one's chronically injured favourite player is still, well, injured.
