You guys are underestimating the difficulty of this sport and her injury.

Its not as easy as just saying "get a second serve and forehand"....

Shafanovic.
Feb 6th, 2011, 10:43 PM
I think, mentally, the injury has that impact on her.

It HAS to be playing in her mind everytime she's about to hit a serve. And by having that doubt, she is nervous and likely to hit a double fault or not getting the ball in.

But, you know, if she cares about her shoulder, that means she cares about tennis and she's not going to quit and she'll keep going until she gets back to the top of the game.

Off to Paris, another trip to Moscow where I can't play my best tennis. I think I want it too much. Glad the team won, that is most important. I want to Thank all the amazing Russian fans that were in Olympic stadium cheering for me. I can't tell you how special that was for me, it meant so much.

Sharapova sees Dubai as a springboard
Dubai: Tennis superstar Maria Sharapova is hoping that her week at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will provide the springboard to set her firmly back on the road to the top of the game.

Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of tournament owners and organisers Dubai Duty Free, is looking forward to welcoming Sharapova back to Dubai after a lengthy absence from the tournament.

"Maria is one of the true champions of the game and is highly sought after by every tournament in the world" stated McLoughlin.

"We are thrilled that she is now free of her injury troubles and is able to join us once again at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships," he added.

The glamorous Russian has struggled to recapture the form that took her to number one in the world and three Grand Slam titles, after a serious shoulder injury took her off the WTA tour for nine frustrating months and dropped her out of the world's top 100. But although she has struggled since returning to the game she is happy to be playing at all, she says.

"My body feels the best it has in a long time and I am confident that my results will keep improving. I am playing Fed Cup and then Paris before coming to Dubai, so I have a nice schedule coming up," said Sharapova.

Last season was a successful one for the world's highest earning woman athlete, as she won titles in Memphis and Strasbourg and reached the final of three further events in Birmingham, Stanford and Cincinnati. Now she is ready to take a further step back to where she knows she belongs.

Competitive person

"My ambitions are still very much there. I've been a competitive girl ever since I was pretty much born. I love the sport. Whether it's a loss or a win, I try to move on from that and build on it," she said.

As for Sharapova's thoughts on Dubai, the Russian star reckoned: "I am looking forward to playing in Dubai again. It is such a great city and I have some really good memories from playing there.

"I remember many years ago doing a shoot at an indoor skiing facility. That was really cool. I think it was the first indoor skiing place in the world. I loved it."

"I have never had the chance to visit Dubai just for fun unfortunately, as we have such busy schedules during the season, but after my career it will definitely be on my list," she added.

Sharapova will face the strongest possible challenge as she seeks to go one stage further than she did on her previous trip to Dubai in 2006, when she defeated Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport before falling in the final to Justine Henin.

I don't think she's playing so many tournaments to get her confidence up, I think it's because she's changing some things in her game, so early exits are to be expected. Maybe even for the coming months.

Is she really changing things, though, or is it about confidence after all? Apart from the bending on her forehand, I haven't really noticed anything new/different. Her lasso forehand is back as well.
Also what happened to her tennis from FO 10 - Cincy final? She played some really good tennis back then. :awww:

this is what bugs me as well...she played some inspired tennis last summer, serving well and hitting as big as ever. But since that unfortunate loss to Kim in Cincy it all went downhill. Hopefully she and her team will find a solution soon, because the tour needs GOATPova, not miserable Poova

Don't overreact. She did play some good - probably her best of the season and good enough for a strong showing at slam - tennis there but it wasn't THAT amazing either. Still, it's heaps better than how she's playing now though.

Gotta agree with that. I don't expect her to come out and play AO '08 GOAT tennis but she played pretty well last summer, it wasn't painful to watch. So I am wondering why it worked decently back then and now she's back to being a pretty big mess.

Hm yeah now that I look at it you weren't really overreacting, my bad sorry.
Pretty sure she was depressed that she let that match against Clijsters slip and unmotivated because she lost to someone like Wozniacki. :o

Yeah that's true. Some of her matches were fairly enjoyable (vs Aga and Bartoli, the last one being IMO the best match she played last year till the hiccup). :)

Andy.
Feb 8th, 2011, 07:58 PM
I think its all between the ears. The loss to Wozniacki really hurt her I think and really took away her confidence and motivation. She has been a shaddow of her former self since. She barely showed up in Asia and she hasnt been able to lift so far this year except for one match where she played semi decent tennis.

Hardly, with her current form, lack of match play and recovering from a virus it's more like a given she isn't going to do well at IW and Miami.

The senior team coach of Russia Vladimir Kamelzon refuted the view that within our team during the quarterfinals of the Fed Cup 2011 Russia - France has been an unhealthy climate. Recall that after the first day of battle the Russian national team sensationally yielded 0:2, then the team captain Shamil Tarpishchev planted the leader of our team in that match, former top-ranked Maria Sharapova in the reserve, releasing instead of her first match on Sunday the young Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. As a result, Russians have extracted strong-willed victory - 3:2.

"I do not see any big problem - quoted by the newspaper" Izvestia ", the words Kamelzona . - In the same game with the French problems with microclimate, as far as I know, still not there. Yes, very much wanted to play Sharapova in the second day, but resigned to a coach to replace. It would be something there not in order, Mary would gather belongings and departed early in the morning. But she stayed with the team, but after the game has come yet to a banquet. "

According to a source in one of the following games in the 2011 Fed Cup-Sharapova should appear in the national team again.

just imagine if maria left sunday morning...
any pics of the banquet.

Mr. Vujacic, on the other hand, exemplifies the isolation of the vagabond athlete. Twelve years ago, when he was 14 and one of his nation's top basketball hopes, he moved to a town 45 minutes away from home in order to play for a higher-quality team. He spent the entirety of his hours either practicing, studying, eating or sleeping, and considered it to be the loneliest time of his lifeóuntil now. Renting an apartment in Hoboken, N.J., Mr. Vujacic longs for the companionship of his fiancť, the Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova, who travels throughout the year. He devotes much of his time to reading and studying basketball videos, and he misses the comfort and familiarity of his Manhattan Beach home.

"I've been waiting five days now to have the heater in my apartment fixed," he said. "When you are in a place as long as I was in Los Angeles, you grow at ease with things. That, to me, is the roughest adjustment. I know how to play basketball, no problem.

"What I need to learn is how to survive the cold until spring."

Do you simply fail to realise that Maria did not play Paris/Dubai/Doha because of health circumstances or did you just not phrase your feelings correctly there? It's not like Maria randomly decided to withdraw from those tournaments for no reason. She is playing Charleston (if that tweet is true) unless health problems/injuries occur again.

I think you're partly right.

Yes, she did not withdraw from P/D/D with no reason. She was sick and therefor forced to withdraw.

But if denny is right and Masha is not on the entry list for Charleston, then she did rather "randomly" decide to withdraw from that event, because I doubt that Masha or her team think that Maria will go deep into both, Indian Wells and Miami.
If denny is right and Masha is not on the list, she is NOT playing Charleston unless she decides to take a wildcard. This decision would probably depend on how successful she's playing in IW & Miami and if she feels like she needs to get more matches under her belt or not.

If denny is right, then I'm assuming Maria never really was officially on the entry list and the organizing staff from Charleston are using her name for extra publicity.
But yeah that makes sense, Charleston could be optional, seeing how she does after IW/Miami but I hope she plays as long as she's healthy.

why so excited about the Nike event?

The match is kind of meaningless, but it has been kind of a long time since we have even seen her. She has had time to work with her new coach---there might be nothing worthy of note---but it will not be an unpleasant task to watch for things.

Why pathetic? She is winning by a big margin over the likes of Federer and Nadal...who are arguably 2 of the most popular male athletes of all time. Plus like someone else said she hasn't played there in like 4 years.
It's nice to know that there are so many fans for Maria, almost double the amount of Fedal.

I wonder if I am the only one who is wondering about what Maria has been doing on the practice courts the last month. Maybe not much--maybe a lot that could be significant--maybe pretty much what she always does. I really look forward to seeing her on court again.

Looking forward to competing again
Posted on March 9, 2011

Hello to all my friends,
So here we are on this amazing Nike private jet flying back to Palm Springs after playing the Exho in Eugene Oregon in front one of the best crowds I have ever been a part of...pinch me now! How lucky are we!
Besides the fact that I had so much fun, I got to play with some incredible champions. Although we are big competitors, it is always fun to play a match where we get to interact with the crowd, enjoy the 'scene', poke fun at McEnroe (how often do we get to do that!)
Anyways the site is finally up and running in full force! The forum is officially open, we have the store which I hope makes things easier to purchase, and overall I'm so happy with it! Similar to a new pair of shoes...new pair of heels that is!
Looking forward to competing in the next few weeks...I really miss it! And I miss playing tournament matches...there's nothing on the practice court that can replicate those moments and emotions.
Can't wait to see my fans in Palm Springs!

Pinch me now?

WHAT!

Federer, Sharapova draw a crowd for Indian Wells practice
By Bill Scott Mar 10, 2011, 1:09 GMT

Indian Wells, California - Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova drew a standing room-only crowd Wednesday as two of the most recognisable faces in the sport practised on adjoining courts as seeds prepared for their starts at the Indian Wells Masters.

The pair were fresh from an exhibition the night before in Oregon sponsored by their clothing company that also featured world number one Rafael Nadal, and a surprise appearance by John McEnroe, who is never from from a tennis spotlight.

Sharapova was ushered off to the sanctity of the player's patio and compound by a security staff after stopping following her session to sign dozens of autographs from eager fans under a baking desert sun at this resort 200 kilometers east of Los Angeles. Seeds at the first Masters of the season receive byes into the second round.

The women's top ranking could be up for the taking again just three weeks after it was swapped between Kim Clijsters and current holder Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

Clijsters fronted up in the Californian desert with a new shorter hairstyle, explaining that she had it done last month in Antwerp during Fed Cup.

'I've always wanted short hair,' said the mother of one and winner of the last two editions of the US Open since returning to tennis following the birth of her daughter. 'it's just a bit shorter. I went back to the shop every day for two or three days and got it a little shorter each time. I'm liking it. And I'll probably go even shorter.'

Women's first-round play got underway in torrid conditions, with Argentines, Americans, Swiss and Italians all clocking opening wins.

Argentina's Gisela Dulko defeated doubles rival Vania King of the US 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, while American Bethanie Mattek-Sands beat out Russian Vera Dushevina 6-4, 6-4.

Alize Cornet of France ousted Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder in straight sets, but Swiss Timea Bacsinszky took revenge with her win over Olga Govortsova of Belarus 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 to reach the second round.

Men began preparation with their first round beginning Thursday, with many of the Latin players - and Scot Andy Murray - using the soft grass carpet surrounding the training courts for impromptu games of football.

Novak Djokovic, the form player of the season along with Robin Soderling after winning both events he's played at the Australian Open and Dubai, put aside his golf clubs from earlier this week to get back to work on court.

'I want to take one tournament at a time,' he said in the run-up. 'I just want to be playing consistently well. I want to keep up the good form that I have, stay fit and take care of my health and physical condition.'

Federer may be learning that his era of domination is concluding, but that reality will not keep the Swiss from a fight for the top for as long as he plays the game.

'At the end of the day, we've (Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic) been able to share those a little bit to be honest. But I don't feel it's a three-horse race right now.

'Rafa (number one) is still the favourite. He's won three of the four slams. Novak has not lost a match yet this season, but the season is still really short.'

Nadal owns Indian Wells titles from 2007 and 2009, while Federer collected a hat-trick 2004-2006, Djokovic lifted the trophy in 2008 after losing the final to Nadal 12 months earlier.

Clark: An unbelievable evening, even for the most casual of observers

But years from now, when I'm looking back on all the great things Oregon has brought to my doorstep, it won't be the psychology midterm I spent all night cramming for that will be remembered. It'll be the night I spent at Matthew Knight Arena, in its inaugural year on campus, when tennis icons Federer, Nadal, Sharapova and Azarenka graced Eugene for a fleeting moment, inspiring more than 12,000 people to strive for greatness.
