More fashionable, on or off the court?, Because they were separate categories, so won 3/5 or 4/5?

Looking around the press this morning (Wed), I'm a little disappointed with Matt Cronin, who I generally find credible. 1) Tarpischev's annual summation was released from the RTF news agency. 2) Reuters, in the person of Gennady Fydorov (known Western flack) extracted most (though not all) of the Sharapova-Fed Cup content & "spun" it a little. 3) American journals from Montreal to Miami Beach then ran that extracted content at face value. 4) Only Tennis.com/Cronin were moved to attack mode at first report.(source; Paul Pipkin)

This is about all she said...

"In 2011 my purpose - fight for the highest titles. I've already missed a lot of play. I should work to return to my previous form, in the future season I am solidly determined to win one of the major tournaments. I want to again feel the euphoria of big victory. I will begin season 2011 in New Zealand, and then I will go to Australian Open."

Getting ready for my trip to Monterrey for my exho against Vera. I have been working really hard on and off the court, it will be nice to play in front of a friendly crowd in a great stadium. My team and I have had a great off season, maybe my best ever so I am really looking forward to 2011. But before we get to 2011, we have my favorite holiday, CHRISTMAS!!! Has 'Shara' royal judges

AGENCY REFORM / MONTERREY
Posted: 12/4/2010

Two of the best players in the world body will have a completely royal line judges, said yesterday Fosado Mauricio, president of the Tennis Association of Nuevo Leon, which is responsible for the technical aspects of the exhibition match between Maria Sharapova and Vera Zvonareva.

The chair umpire is the capital Hugo Castillo, but the linesmen will be local, all with previous international experience in WTA events.

"We will provide line judges and all are from Monterrey," said the manager, "they have had previous experience in the Monterrey Open tennis, besides being a tennis professional in their respective clubs."

Saul Castillo, Jesús Ramírez, Daniel Vallejo, Ricardo Jauregui, José Luis Grimaldo, Eduardo Rios and Adrian Fuentes, led by Angelica Castro, will be among those responsible for penalizing the shots of two of the best players according to the WTA rankings in Arena Monterrey.

Both players will face Russia in a match display on Sunday at 12 noon in the Arena. The players will arrive today to the city.

"In Monterrey is very capable of performing the JUDGING and fortunately all have experience in the Monterrey Open," added Fosado.

For the clinic who will give pre-match Sharapova, 15 of the top players nationally ranked children will be present, and a further 15 of the School Development Tennis handled in Inde.

The rest will be invited to sponsor the visit. Boleros 12 children will also be featured in tennis between 14 and 16.

Sharapova hires Hogstedt to co-coach her with Joyce

December 04, 2010

Former No.1 Maria Sharapova has hired Swede Thomas Hogstedt to co-coach her along with her longtime coach and friend, Michael Joyce, Tennis.com has learned.

Sharapova and Hogstedt will begin formerly working together this coming week at the Bollettieri Academy in Florida. It was Joyce who suggested bringing in another set of eyes to help work with his student. He and Hogstedt -- who helped bring China's Na Li to the top 10 and Tommy Haas to No. 2 in the world -- are said to get along well and have done clinics together.

Sharapova ended 2010 ranked No. 18 and was largely disappointed with her year at the Grand Slams. It's Joyce and Hogestedt's aim to get her to focus more on improving, rather than on her results. Three-times Grand Slam champion Sharapova has not won a major since the 2008 Australian Open and has struggled to regain her once lethal form since undergoing right shoulder surgery in October of 2008.

Sharapova did play both former No. 1's Justine Henin and Serena Williams extremely tough in tight losses at the French Open and at Wimbledon, but felt she underperformed in her loss to now No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki at the US Open. The 23-year-old is hoping that Hogstedt will help Joyce to smooth out the rough edges in her game. Hogstedt began to informally work with Sharapova and Joyce at a private court in her adopted home of Los Angeles in November. -- Matthew Cronin

regardless the fact that HEAD seems written at the top of the frame of Maria's racquet (see the pic) it still does not prove the producer is Head. Prince had indicated they can use in their experimental racquets frames or other elements from other producers . From outside is not possible to know what is inside the frame. And what is inside makes the difference...
I think Prince and Maria will soon publish an explanation and then we'll know who the real producer is.

I don't know if people saw the article on http://www.maria-sharapova.org, but I thought it was kind of funny. It's obviously old news, it's before the end of October.

The most eligible bachelorette in tennis is off the market.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova got engaged to her boyfriend, Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic, after he proposed on Tuesday night at his Manhattan Beach, Calif. home. The two had been dating for nearly a year. TMZ was the first to report the news. Sharapova's agent has since confirmed it to CNBC's Darren Rovell.

Sharapova and Vujacic first went public with their relationship last November when they were seen cuddling at a U2 concert in Los Angeles. Since then, the relationship has become the fodder of tabloids and paparazzi, as the athletes have been photographed together in Los Angeles and Italy, where they vacationed.

[Photos: See Lakers' guard Sasha Vujacic on the courts]

This summer, Sharapova invited Vujacic to join her in training at the IMG Academy in Florida. The backup guard for the two-time defending champions credited his girlfriend for helping him prepare for the upcoming basketball season.

Neither should be worried about the inevitable questions on whether marriage will negatively impact their games. Vujacic averaged a career low in points, rebounds, minutes and assists with the Lakers, while Sharapova struggled in Grand Slams and didn't live up to the high expectations following her comeback from shoulder surgery.

No wedding plans have been announced, but given that Vujacic's seasons in Los Angeles often last until mid-June, a post-Wimbledon date could be in the offing.

I especially laughed at the part where they were suggesting that each of their poor performance's recently were somehow connected to their relationship.

exactly..i mean dahh, thats funny, both were already struggling before they actually started dating..sasha is bummed with DNP's ryt now, and masha well, she's working and obviously wants to bounce back next year..the relationship has nothing to do with it..lol..

Guys I just edited Maria's Wikipedia page. It was kind of lacking, it didn't have anything about the end of the 2010 season or the start of the 2011 season. Check it out (Let me know if there's anything that's incorrect).

I wrote the very last paragraph under the 2010 section, and all of what is there for the 2011 section.

More about Maria winning Humanitarian of the year :

Sharapova: Humanitarian Of The Year

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, USA - The stars of the WTA don't just shine on the court, they often shine off the court with a variety of charitable projects. Fans were given the chance to vote for the Humanitarian Of The Year award online recently, as a part of the WTA Awards, and they selected Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova, whose on-court accomplishments include three Grand Slam titles and reaching the No.1 ranking, has also given much of her time to children's charities, most notably in her role as a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador, which she began in 2007. Her role is to support achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, with an emphasis on promoting the recovery of Chernobyl nuclear disaster-affected areas.

In June, Sharapova donated $250,000 to expand a UNDP program that provides sports and physical activities for youth in the area affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster back in 1986. Sharapova's family actually fled the region a year before she was born because of concerns about the radiation.

"It has always been my dream to contribute to the recovery of a region where I have a personal connection," Sharapova said. "Giving young people the tools they need to reach for their dreams is a good way to overcome the Chernobyl legacy. Helping people help themselves is at the heart of UNDP's mission."

"Support from citizens like Sharapova mean a lot to the local population and to the international organizations working in the region," Antonius Broek, a UNDP and UN representative, said. "These contributions go a long way to supporting the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals at the local level."

In partnership with UNDP, the Sharapova Foundation has supported seven youth oriented projects in areas affected by Chernobyl and also funds a five year scholarship program for students coming from the contaminated region.

Maria-mania set to hit Auckland ahead of ASB Classic

Tennis fans in Auckland will have the chance to get up close to Maria Sharapova before and during her time at the ASB Classic.

The Russian star will be the biggest name to play in the Auckland WTA tennis tournament and her presence in the country won't just be followed by those passionate about tennis.

On Thursday, December 30, it's hoped Sharapova and other players from the Classic will take part in a speed serve event and autograph session at the Viaduct in Auckland in the afternoon.

This is likely to be the only activity Sharapova will undertake outside the tennis stadium. But she will be doing autograph sessions during the tournament as well as meeting sponsors.

The finishing touches are being put together for the details of Sharapova's time in New Zealand, with tournament director Richard Palmer saying the world No18 and her representatives have been happy to help out with promotional activities.

"We started off with nothing and we've been able to stretch it out to a couple of sessions with sponsors and an autograph session or two, so that's pretty good," Palmer told Sunday News.

"It depends on how she's going in the tournament and how she's feeling but we could approach her to do other things, although she's not obliged to."

Palmer, who was also tournament director in 2001 when Anna Kournikova came to the Classic, says the build up to January dwarfs what happened nine years ago.

"It's bigger than Kournikova, there's no doubt about that," he said.

"There have been some weird people coming out of the woodwork with reasons they should meet her.

"People have been ringing me with things they think they should be able to do with her. There have been some weird and wonderful ones."

Part of the security team at the tournament will be solely focused on Sharapova and will be with her throughout her time in New Zealand.

"That's something we've done before with players and it depends on how comfortable they feel as to whether the security backs off a bit," Palmer said. "They'll be discreet, if necessary, or up front.

"She might decide after a day or two she doesn't need security with her for some things.

"Obviously, we're not going to be taking any risks because of her profile and given some of the weird phone calls and emails I've had from people who think that they should meet her, we have to be very careful with this sort of thing."

Tickets for the tournament are selling fast but are still available.

WHY MASHA PREFERS AUCKLAND OVER THE "AIR" of OZ!!!

I am pretty sure Elena DID consider retirement for over a year--possibly since the crooked umpire Kerrilyn Cramer ruined Tokyo for her in the fall of '09. CERTAINLY when the Melbourne criminal Craig Tiley targeted "wild card" Henin against her in an early round a year ago. Don't EVEN talk to me about "luck" of a "draw". Wild cards aren't "drawn"--they are ASSIGNED, particularly at a major.

When Miami cronies repeated the same formula forthwith, you KNEW there was no "luck" involved. In fact, Justine Henin accomplished NOTHING during her 2010 "return" except be USED to degrade Elena's ranking. Shamefully, except for a few voices on the Sharapova forum, I didn't hear a lotta protest from Elena's friends.

Well, you're gonna hear about it NOW--because others are at risk. The 2010 AO "draw" was a vicious FARCE from the first round: China on China; Muslim on Muslim (the only two in the tournament--try & tell me that was "luck"!); close friend on friend (Masha-MaKiri); mentor on student (largely Eastern players)... on down to the final, where Tiley put the third-rate Cramer in the chair just in case Williams needed any bogus calls to help her get through.

You think he isn't gonna target Vera Zvonareva now--perhaps Sharapova & others? He'd already robbed Kuzi in '08, manipulating the heat rule to save Serena from her. Then in '09, stung by the global criticism, Tiley tried to blame the victim by slandering Sventlana's name in the Aussie yellow press. Craig Tiley has rendered the Australian Open the most corrupt tournament on earth. Dementieva is his primary victim so far but NO Russian contender can expect a level playing field.

Whether the filth Tiley has propagated thru Tennis Australia will infect the early meets remains to be seen. But I firmly believe this is one reason Maria Sharapova has chosen instead to warm up in the clean air of New Zealand.

Sharapova's new attire a classic little ensemble

Tennis – and fashion – fans in New Zealand will be the first to see what glamour player Maria Sharapova will be wearing on court next year when she unveils a new outfit at January's ASB Classic.

Pictures have emerged of Sharapova's planned outfit for the Australian Open and it's customary for players to wear the same clothes at the Classic as they'll wear in the first Grand Slam of the year.

Sharapova, the world No 18 and top seed in Auckland, will wear the "Oz Open Ace Dress", which is made of lightweight dri-FIT material by her Nike sponsors.

This is supposed to let her move freely around the court while absorbing sweat and moisture from her skin.

The dress is peach and grey, although there is a two-piece variant, which is peach on top with pink trim and a grey skirt.

Sharapova was involved in the design process, including being responsible for the "boomerang back", which will see her back revealed more than in most other outfits.

"What we like to think about for the Australian Open is keeping our female athletes as unrestricted as possible," said Janice Lucena, creative director of Nike Tennis.

"With Maria's dress, there is some playful inspiration around Australia and some unrestricted mobility around the top."

Being the most photographed sportswoman in the world, there is always intense interest in what Sharapova will be wearing each year.

It's certain that pictures of her in action for the first time next season, at the ASB Classic, will be shown in newspapers and magazines around the world, giving the tournament unprecedented global coverage.

I don't think she will wear the AO dress in Auckland, it will probably be the two piece or maybe even the same dress she wore in Monterrey  but it says '...customary for players to wear the same clothes at the Classic as they'll wear in the first Grand Slam of the year.'

yeah in 2005 the yellow one at the AO she wore in tokyo afterwards doha and indian wells, then moved on to the pink one for a few tournaments but as far as wearing a dress she has worn at a slam goes she's never worn it before the tournament.

It was all about money for the Lakers. They're way way over the cap as it is, and they need money to sign people that matter in the offseason (Shannon Brown). I feel slightly sorry for Sasha because he loved the LA life, and now he goes to Newark. I think it's really good for the Lakers though, they get bench depth in Joe Smith, they get rid of $5 million that's just keeping the bench warm.
