Aukland has a pretty weak field every year so hopefully Masha will gather some match practice and maybe win it all.

So MariaSharapova.com is getting a redesign! Yay finally. I was getting tired of the old one, I still want it to be in flash though. I like websites in flash. Although they really need to get rid of her forum or at least get a moderator. I used to be an active user there, the place is a mess. If I post inappropriate pictures on the forum, it wouldn't be deleted because there'd be no one to do so.

Really? I'm not a fan. I don't really have one despite being a natural citizen.

Gotta laugh at that a bit... $70mil and she's playing Auckland. But hey I'm thinking deeper that Nike had a hand in the engagement since on-court wasn't working. They're like the Company in Prison Break, the Ring in Chuck, and whatever other shows have secret organisations that manipulate events.

If they really wanna create an off-court story, they'd pay Uncle Phil big bucks to let Sasha play. "Tennis star getting married to Basketball star" sounds much better than "Tennis star getting married to glorified bench warmer". :rolls:

Maria has more friends than all of you have together (I assume everybody of you who comment about her friends have 20 friends). She has friends in and outside sports but it is impossible for you to know them. As far as I know none of you is close to Maria and no one has a friend who is very close to Maria. That's the only way you could know how many friends Maria has.
Did you know Kobe, Pau, LeBron and Nash are her personal friends?
Did you know Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are her personal friends?
Did you know Rachel Zoe, Natasha Poly and De Niro are her friends?
The list is very long...
So, please be more respectful to Maria.

Tennis: Russian 'biggest coup' for Auckland

The signing of Russian star Maria Sharapova has added glamour and grunt to New Zealand's premier women's tennis tournament.

The three-time Grand Slam winner was yesterday confirmed for the ASB Classic, and tournament director Richard Palmer rates it as the biggest coup's in the event's 15-year history.

"This one ranks right up there," he said. "To get a player of her calibre and a person of her calibre ... We're rapt to get her."

There have been several big names that have made it to the Classic, but few with the cachet of Sharapova.

Anna Kournikova had the biggest profile, while Mary Pierce, Lindsay Davenport, Anastasia Myskina, Francesca Schiavone, Amelie Mauresmo and Conchita Martinez have all won Grand Slams.

Sharapova arguably trumps them all. She has a massive profile, has won on the biggest stage and at 23 is still capable of winning the big ones.

Speaking on a conference call from Los Angeles, where she is taking a break from the tour after an injury-wracked 2010, the Russian said she had made a commitment to return to Hong Kong, before opting for the more tranquil surrounds of Stanley St.

"I'd heard incredible things about New Zealand but had never been there, so I just wanted to change it up a little bit," she said.

Before the call started the gathered were under strict instructions not to ask any questions about her recent engagement to LA Lakers basketball player Sasha Vujacic.

The thorny issue of her decibel rating was broached, however, with the Russian showing a deft touch by managing to avoid answering any questions about her grunting.

When asked if she was still hitting the high notes, she simply replied: "Have you seen any of my matches on TV lately ... There's your answer then."

Sharapova was born in Siberia. Handed her first tennis racquet at 4, she showed uncommon talent and by 7 was encouraged to emigrate to the US to join Nick Bollettieri's vaunted academy in Florida.

Money was so tight father Yuri worked as a dishwasher to fund her lessons, and visa restrictions prevented mother Yelena joining them until two years later.

Life has changed a bit since then, with Sharapova regularly featuring in the world's richest sportswomen lists.

She has been plagued by shoulder problems since 2008, having surgery at the end of that year to repair a rotator cuff tear. That meant she could not defend her Australian Open title in 2009 and spent much of that year rehabilitating.

This year has been kinder to her, though she failed to make it past the round of 16 in any of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

After a recent bout of sickness she is taking time off to recuperate, but she remained sure she would be in top shape by the New Year.

MARIA SHARAPOVA

* Born April 19, 1987.
* Grand Slam wins at 2004 Wimbledon; 2006 US Open; 2008 Australian Open.
* 22 WTA titles.
* Made the cover of Sports Illustrated's 2006 Swimsuit Issue and People magazine's 50 most Beautiful People.
* Listed by Forbes as one of the richest female athletes in the world.

A joke is a joke is a joke.

Humour is based on a percieved conception of a person's particular status whether that is true or not, the fact of whether or not Maria has a lot of friends is irrelevant to the joke -- the point is that there is a popular conception that she has little friends.

For **** sake, why do I always need to explain simple shit like this to you guys?

LOL at little Martha. To add, she said that at first she did not believe it when read Maria was engaged and that "just because she's engaged, it doesn't mean that tomorrow she's getting married." She also said that she's happy that Maria has found her love.. and we'll see. Then she says(not sure of the literal translating) god willing, that Maria will get married.

she also talks about their friendship. They met when they were 13 in Germany. Since that moment they've clicked and became good friends. Now, since they live in different countries, they don't see each other that often, but they occasionally talk on the phone and write to each other.

Edit: The guys also asked her what present she would give Maria for her wedding, and she said something from Russia since Maria has everything else. :p

Even in her current state she's such a big friggin deal its so insane- yet there's a real possibilty she'll make it like two rounds! She's gonna make Kournikova's visit here seem non-existent. The only athlete with greater superstardomness who has trumped this is when Tiger Woods came here.

That's Auckland. ;)

I spent 4 months in Auckland between my 2nd and 3rd year of University in 1982 (as you can see I'm an old fart) and loved the city. It reminded me of San Francisco with it's crazy steep streets. I loved how environmentally conscious the Kiwi's were even back then. Awesome country, awesome people!

To support Maria in the best light 100% would be superficial. Look at how brothers and sisters act in a relationship. They joke about each other, they lie about each other, they make fun of each other, etc. because deep down they know they have a strong, personal bond. I'm not trying to say Maria is my sister or anything () but I've been a fan of her for years that I get a little tired of kissing her ass 24/7. In fact, I think true friends are the ones that can actually joke about their own favorite player because it shows how comfortable and confident you feel in your player.

Besides, how do you know that Maria has so many friends? She has like 2 friends on tour so I can only imagine in real life.

Legit response. I was gonna be all like "Oh but you told me not to do something so now I'm gonna do it :devil:"

My daughter is nearly the age of Maria and my son is several years older. My sister is 8 years younger than me. So I know very well how brother and sister make fun of each other. More than that I know how father, son and daughter make fun of each other as well.
I am not against having fun and not against joking. I love joking and if you are with me and after 5 minutes you are not laughing it means only two things - you are deaf or I am very ill.
But jokes can be positive and negative. They are negative when are used to point to the weak side of the person and used as a proof of that weakness. Joking "Maria has no friends" was negative because of that. In reality none of you believe Maria has many friends. Even now after such long discussion you do not believe as well. Look at your post - you doubt I know even you do not know anything about me. I know many things about Maria which none of you knows and will never know unless becomes a friend of Maria, which theoretically is possible.
But the list of the friends of Maria I gave above is such that all of you could have known it, if were following carefully what Maria said or did.
And last remark - your logic, making conclusions about Maria's friends based on the quantity of friends-female tennis players which she has, is completely wrong.

anyway it wasn't the point. after 4 years of reading his posts (not only here at tennisforum. you yourself know where else) i'm quite sure that he really DOES know a LOT of things about Maria and her tennis. that knowing helps understand/analyse what's going on now and why.

Sharapova ditches Hong Kong for Auckland (http://www.tennisforum.com/montrealgazette/blogs/opencourt/archive/2010/10/30/sharapova-ditches-hong-kong-for-auckland.aspx)

Here's just one of the reasons we respect Maria Sharapova's way of doing business.
The Russian, who typically banks a huge cheque for playing that meaningless exhibition in Hong Kong before the Australian Open, had decided to play the small tuneup event in Auckland, New Zealand instead.
Here's an excerpt of the way tournament director Richard Palmer said it went down (http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/tennis/4279642/All-the-trimmings-for-reasonably-priced-Sharapova), in terms of negotiations.
"Her agent telephoned to say she was interested in playing Auckland, and to ask, were we interested – silly question.
"There was an asking rate and it was fair and reasonable, given who she is and our limited resources, and it was all tied up in just over two weeks – a lot less stressful than some of these things, which can take months."
Sharapova then did a conference call, with the only stipulation being no questions about her recent engagement to Sasha Vujacic of the Lakers.
Easy as pie.
We'll contrast that with the courtship of Serena Williams in Istanbul (http://communities.canada.com/montrealgazette/blogs/opencourt/archive/2010/07/14/serena-to-make-miraculous-recovery.aspx).
“We have been working for six months to bring Serena to play in Istanbul. We have talked to her agent, her father, her mother. We have to go through from every detail, from where she will stay to what events she will show up during her time in here. It was a tiring effort but it will be worthwhile."
What was striking about that entire Istanbul affair was that this event took place the last week of July. But even 10 days before (after the "broken glass incident," and after she pulled out of her Team Tennis commitments in the U.S., when Serena had to know she was in trouble, she still didn't do anything to stop them from announcing and confirming her participation in an event there was no chance she'd show up for.
It is a huge deal for these smaller events to have players of that magnitude. They base their entire limited marketing funds around it. And with women's tennis playing to so many empty seats these days, it's probably a budget breaker if they don't show (Istanbul was pretty sparse in the wake of Williams's eventual withdrawal).
Serena was to be paid $150,000 to show up in Istanbul, which tournament organizers said was less than the going rate for someone of Williams's stature.
We don't have a number on Sharapova's guarantee in Auckland.
This isn't as much a criticism of Williams (who can do as she pleases in running her career, and does) as much as it is a shoutout to Sharapova, who has myriad business interests and is a money-making machine, but somehow seems to manage to keep it all reasonably low-maintenance, at least from the outside.

And did you happen to smack your head on the pavement that you'd forgotten it's a joke? But if to some people, they really do believe that, what's your problem anyway? It's non of your business and you can't control what other people think. There's a popular (mis)conception that she doesn't have that much friends, people supporting that or not does not change anything.

Hello. As you can see from the pic, I'm from Elena section of the forum. As you know, Elena's era as an active player came to an end this week. She was admired by almost all the other players in the tour and she was especially in very good realtionship with all the other Russian players. Well, almost all of them but not all of them. I'm wondering what Masha's reaction to Elena's retirement was and if we will read something from her about this news.

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/7457/610xjk.jpg (http://img153.imageshack.us/i/610xjk.jpg/)

The non-existence of Maria-Elena realtionship is well known. They had mutual respect in terms of tennis and some good compliments were said by them about this but in terms of minimal friendship it was Zero. You could see even when they were together in ceremonies or events, how they are not close and even don't look at each other. It wan not hate just nothing between them, they almost ignored each other.

the main reason for this was their different background: their age was not the same, they were from different origin and the process of learning tennis was very different. It seems that the main reason for their lack of contact was different view about life and career and their intersts seems quiet oposite. It is important to say that there was no single incident between them like what happened with Myskina or some early Sveta comments. Their personalities seems to be not match each other.

However, for me it was kind of shame. I don't blame anybody but I think that despite the different background, they could overcome it and behave like all the other Russian players. For me, their tennis passion and atittude was very similar. In the recent years when masha was facing her serve problems, I think that they really could find similar language and I even think that they could have fantatstic practice sessions together as good preparation for tournaments. There are many players who have different character but when it comes to tennis, they just put them outside and focus on their similar expereience. It was shame that two of the great represantive of the Russian revoulution could not do it.

Q. Secondly, try and put yourself in Justine Henin's shoes and tell us why you might not like tennis and decide to retire from tennis.
MARIA SHARAPOVA: I don't think she's retiring from tennis because she doesn't like tennis. She's 25 years old and has achieved so much in her career and has had incredible success on the court.
If I'm 25 and I won I don't know how many Grand Slams she's won, seven or something, I'd call it quits as well.
You know, I wouldn't be disappointed leaving the sport, because obviously there's a lot more to life than tennis. She's had a very long career, and you never know, maybe one day she'll be back.
She's done incredible things for the sport. She's shown that without being the strongest or the tallest girl on the tour she's been able to win so many matches in so many tournaments and Grand Slams. She's an inspiration to many young girls coming up.
Like I said, there are so many things in life, and I'm sure she wants to explore them as well. I definitely don't blame her for retiring.

Q. So that means you understand very well what Justine has done and you could do it also?
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Absolutely, yeah. I think -- like I said, I just, I mean, you're 25 years old, and tennis starts at a very young age. You're basically committing every day of your life to tennis.
No matter what days you have off or how long you have off, you're always thinking but consequences to what you're doing and how that's going to affect your training and performance.
It's tough to be able to do what we do day in and day out. There's only a certain amount of time. Everybody is different and everybody can withstand it as much as they can.
But I totally understand where she's coming from. Like I said, I don't think she has anything to regret. She's had a great career. If I were in her shoes, I would probably do the same thing.

that's what she said of Henin's retirement.

Maria Sharapova will Design Her Wedding Shoes
Johns PkI/Splash News Online
Newly engaged tennis champ Maria Sharapova may not have picked a wedding dress yet, but the Nike spokesperson and designer certainly knows what she will be wearing on her feet. “I will for sure be wearing Cole Haan because everybody that’s been talking to me about weddings and comfortable shoes said, you have to be sure that you’re wearing comfortable shoes and I’m like, well I know where I’m going to and I’m for sure going to design them,” Sharapova told PEOPLE about her nuptial footwear from the Nike subsidiary at the 14th annual ACE awards presented by the Accessories Council at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York on Monday. The superstar, whose engagement to L.A. Lakers shooting guard, Sasha Vujacic, was announced last month, said besides designing her own wedding kicks, she is also taking some time to bask in the engagement glow, refusing to stress out over a specific venue or guest list. “No, no, absolutely not, we’re going to take our time,” explained Sharapova, who picked up the Brand Collaboration Award last night. The Russian beauty is accustomed to wearing short tennis skirts, but is open to the idea of a long, traditional gown. “I think it depends on the design of the dress and how you feel about it,” Sharapova said. “Sometimes you want to go a little bit shorter but I love when the dress is also long and fluid and you feel really elegant and flow-y.” The 23-year-old feels decidedly different since the engagement. “It’s a really good feeling,” Sharapova told PEOPLE. “At the end of the day we have each other and we obviously have our respective careers and we’re really busy but it’s great to come home to someone.” –Mary S. The Los Angeles Laker, 26, managed to keep his proposal plans -- including a reportedly $250,000 ring -- completely under wraps from Maria Sharapova, his tennis star love of nearly a year.

"He completely surprised me! I'm so lucky and very much spoiled," Sharapova, 23, told UsMagazine.com at Monday's Ace Awards at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC. The Serbian-born basketball star popped the question Oct. 19 in his Manhattan Beach, Calif. home.

"It was very special and obviously a very memorable evening in my life," the Russia-born Grand Slam champ gushed. "It's something I'll always remember, it was very sweet."

Jewelry expert Michael O'Connor told Us that her engagement ring appears to be a cushion-cut diamond of approximately 7 to 8 carats on a split-shank platinum band -- worth about $250,000.

Vujacic did the ring shopping all on his own, Sharapova confirmed. "Thank goodness my fiance has great taste! He did good."

The sports power couple haven't started planning their big day. "We're taking our time," Sharapova explained. "Right now we're just happy to be engaged. We're both very focused on what we do and we travel alot. We're just happy to have each other!"

What makes their romance work? "He's there for me," she said. "From the beginning he respected and understood my life. We're both very independent people, our careers required that, but at the end of the day we're comfortable and strong around each other."

Assessing the forecast of these WTA stars

By Ravi Ubha, ESPN.com

For the second time in three seasons, the women's year-end No. 1 goes to a player who has never won a major. Caroline Wozniacki (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=630) earned the, uh, distinction, duplicating Jelena Jankovic (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=312) in 2008. Wozniacki reached only one Grand Slam semifinal in 2010.

As Serena Williams (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=394) might say, Wozniacki did win Ponte Vedra Beach. Of course, she played a ton, while Williams and Kim Clijsters (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=376) didn't.

With the curtain almost drawn on 2010, we pose five burning questions looking ahead to 2011.

Will Wozniacki win a Slam?

No.

Wozniacki's stint in Doha told us much. The vivacious blonde faced two power players, Samantha Stosur (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=214) and Clijsters, and lost. If Clijsters didn't get nervy in the second set Sunday, Woz wouldn't have claimed a set. As much as the 20-year-old has improved the serve and forehand, Wozniacki simply doesn't have the massive weapons -- yet.

The Dane figures to face one obstacle or another at the majors in 2011. For a start, Clijsters will be pumped more than usual for the Australian Open, given her embarrassing loss to Nadia Petrova (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=371) last year. Justine Henin (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=398) might rediscover the joys of Roland Garros, and grass is a difficult surface to master for young players. Serena is bound to recover from her foot injury.

Going deep won't be the problem for Wozniacki. Finishing the job will.

What's in store for Venus Williams (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=403)?

Venus competed admirably at the U.S. Open, despite suffering from a knee injury that subsequently shut her down for the remainder of the campaign. It's hard not to think, though, that September's tournament at Flushing Meadows was her last real opportunity to land another non-grass major. Williams collapsed against Clijsters at the U.S. Open, mirroring a defeat to Na Li in Melbourne.

Williams, at 30, can't count on her body to heal the way it did 10 (or even four or five) years ago. Further, the last 30-plus women's player to win a major was Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1990.

Will Justine find her best form?

"Best" may be pushing it, but Henin and her fluid all-court game will have a much better season. The signs are certainly good.

Henin returned to practice in late September following her elbow injury, saying all the "doubts" are gone. The seven-time Grand Slam winner committed to playing in the Hopman Cup the first week of January and made herself available for Fed Cup duty against the U.S. in February.

Carlos Rodriguez, Henin's longtime coach, suspected the 28-year-old would take a little longer than many thought to win a Slam in her comeback, even though Henin reached the Australian Open final.

Can we write off the Serbs?

Yes, as serious Grand Slam contenders.

Funny, a few years ago Jankovic and Rafael Nadal (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=261) had similar styles. Both were pure counterpunchers. Although Rafa has evolved, Jankovic has been pretty static.

Her serve remains a liability, and the forehand doesn't frighten opponents. She's the undisputed No. 1 at making excuses. The only reason Jankovic might linger in the top 10 or 15 is lack of depth.

Ana Ivanovic's 2011 is promising, although less so now that she parted company with Heinz Gunthardt. Gunthardt was unable to travel with the seemingly high-maintenance Ivanovic (how many coaches has she gone thorough?) full time.

Under Gunthardt, Ivanovic found some of her old form. She won a title in Linz, Austria, without Gunthardt present, so why not settle for a limited partnership? The last thing Ivanovic needs now is instability.

Still, Ivanovic should pass Jankovic in the rankings. Maybe Ivanovic will become a major threat again in 2012.

Which Russian is most likely to rebound?

Based on mental toughness, it must be Maria Sharapova (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=399). Sharapova's engagement to L.A. Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic caused a few, we're sure, to suggest her eye is off the tennis ball. Nah.

Sharapova wants to start winning majors again, and she provided a glimpse of her motivation in signing to play at the smallish ASB Classic in New Zealand in January rather than a lucrative exhibition in Hong Kong. Sharapova showed flashes of her finest form at Wimbledon and the French Open. Unfortunately, the serving woes and inconsistency lingered.

Svetlana Kuznetsova (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=379) is extremely unpredictable, and the two-time Grand Slam champ had issues with motivation in the past. Dinara Safina (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=246) wanted to win too much -- undone by nerves, she flopped in three Grand Slam finals. A back injury means Safina will continue to fight an uphill battle.

As you all know, I love Masha closely followed by JJ :inlove:

I found an article where JJ complimented on Masha's fashion sense. :hearts:

Anyway, if you could do one thing to make women's tennis more popular, what would it be?
I don't know, but I think it's important to have girls who look nice, who have personalities on the court and who can really draw the crowds so more people watch the sport.

You touched on fashion there. It's something you're very interested in, you've designed your own collections. Putting you on the spot, who do you think the best-dressed player on tour is?
It's tough to say. I really love fashion and I think a lot of the girls dress very nicely.

But if Small Talk demanded a name out of you?
If I could just pick one it would be Maria Sharapova.

The women's tennis star on being a fashion designer, kissing Jamie Murray and her favourite pre-match music

Hi Jelena, it's Small Talk here. How are you?

[Cheerily] Good thanks, you?

Very well. It's the end of a long season. How would you sum it up?

It can always be better, but at the same time it could have been worse. I had a good first half; after Wimbledon I was No2 in the world. But unfortunately in the second half I twisted my ankle and I've been suffering with sinus problems. As an athlete you go through a lot of ups and downs.

What's the plan for the off-season? We guess being based in Dubai now you don't really need a vacation ...

I'm just going to recover and recharge my batteries. The whole year is pretty long, we do a lot of travelling. You get tired physically and mentally. So it's nice to have two or three weeks of rest, not think about tennis and just relax with my family and friends.

Will you pretty much be in Dubai?

I don't where I'll be yet to be honest.

Why was it you moved to Dubai, how did that come about? I didn't move to Dubai.

Long pause as Small Talk curses its shoddy research and desperately tries to remember where she was born] Er ... so what's Belgrade like then? What would you recommend doing there of an evening?

Sorry?

Er … er … what would be a good night out?

I think Belgrade has a nice nightlife, there are lots of nice clubs where you can have a good time, listen to some good music and share some drinks. Yeah, Belgrade's a good place for that.

Small Talk considers asking Jelena for an invite on her next night out but fears it hasn't left a great impression so far] Back to the tennis. You're well known in Britain for winning the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with Jamie Murray, are you still in contact with him?

No, unfortunately not. But I heard he got married. I just want to congratulate him and wish him all the best.

You joked at the time you used kisses as a way of motivating him. Did you try anything else as well?

There were plenty of rumours flying around back then … [Laughs] No, that was for fun. The most important thing is we won Wimbledon. I think that's what counts the most.

Very cryptic. So if you could play mixed doubles with anyone, past or present, who would you choose?

[Sounds excited] I'd like to play with [John] McEnroe.

That would be feisty ...

Yeah he has a fun personality, it would be a funny match.

Small Talk would suggest not motivating him with kisses.

Away from fashion, you were doing an economics degree weren't you? Did you finish that?

No, tennis took over. I have two more years left so hopefully I'll be able tgo back to it, because a vocation is very important to me.

So can we expect you to take over the International Monetary Fund when you quit tennis?

I don't know. I have my little clothing line in Serbia, we'll see. I really haven't thought about what I'll do after tennis. Most likely I'll have a family first and live a normal life and then we'll see what I'll do when I get a little bored.

If someone was to make a film of your life, who would you like to play you?

Oh my God, I don't know! Who do you think?

Now you're putting Small Talk on the spot …

[Chuckles] Yeah, exactly! Who do you think?

[Small Talks ums and ahs. And ums and ahs] We'll go for Julia Roberts. Talking of films, what was the last movie you saw?

The one with her, actually. Eat Pray Love.

Did you like it? It's had pretty bad reviews in this country …

Yeah, I don't really want to comment!

Again very diplomatic. And what kind of music do you listen to before heading on to court?

Energetic music to get pumped up and feel good. It's different kinds of music, it depends on how I feel. I like Lady Gaga, I like Beyoncé, I like Alicia Keys.

If you could have a superpower for the day, what would it be?

To be able to fly – especially on the court. Because these days I haven't been moving well, so I'd love to fly on the court, get all the balls back, it would be great.

Just finally Jelena, what's the most famous name you've got in your phone?

That wouldn't be nice to say!

You don't have to give Small Talk the number, just the name …

[Laughs] Yeah but still, if I told you I have the number, many people will call me to get that number. It's best I don't say.

No worries Jelena, at least you've now got Small Talk's number in there. Thanks for your time, hope you get some rest over the winter...

Thank you very much Small Talk. Bye!

Not sure where to mention this...and its not like we have a "Miscellaneous Masha Thread" but anyways

So I'm sure we've all seen or heard that Ana passed Masha in the rankings...whatev

Rankings

#17 Ana 2600
#18 Masha 2591

yeah 9 whole points

BUT...as I always try to see the positive in things

Tourn#'s played

Ana 20
Masha 15

And of the Top 20 players only a total of 5 players played 15 tourneys or less! Now that says alot.
The names of those players you ask?

Kim Clijsters 14
Serena Williams 13
Venus Williams 15
Justine Henin 11
Maria Sharapova 15

Now I would say Masha is in good company. (although I dislike some playes I can at least appreciate there will to win) :tape:

To only play that many events and still be in the top 20 does say alot. The rest of the field had to play more events just to stay or get where they're at in the rankings, which if you ask me sucks for them.
Now I'm sure some of you are thinking "oh if only Masha played more tourneys she would be ranked higher"...well it ain't gonna happen. All we can hope for is a better 2011 and go from there. I'd say this is a positive that will keep me warm through the fall and looking foward to the New Year.

And there's my 2cents :p

there are many possibilities about "i might be wearing something new" such as:

1. new hair look (brunette or she cut her hair short?)

2. new tennis accesories (necklace, earring, back to the headband?)

3. another controversy outfit (electric blue shoes + shorts for AO, swarovski-babydoll white for wimbledon)

4. new MS line logo and it's gonna be her trademark. (like RF for Roger Federer)

5. new racquet (boring)

I'd rather die.

Instyle

Some translation of post 710.

"- I deadly like an elegant classic dressed in general.
-But you got gorgeous legs! It's a sin not to wear something short.
- Perhaps it's enough for me to wear short dresses on the courts.

I suppose her room is filled up with toys - presents from fans, but Masha is laughing back."No-no-no, I don't like anything like that. No spare stuff. My room is very clean. Blue and gold colours. The bed, computer, picture of the bay. That's all.

- Wedding date has been set?
- No, not yet.We are still young and there are so many things to do. There is a lot of work ahead, so wedding date will not come soon.
- Career, career,career?
- Yes.And it's not because of " have to". It's because I like what I'm doing, and I believe I can achieve more... Me and Sasha know we have each other and we'll support each other. He's got hard career, I've got very hard career and not very long. In some time the family life will be waiting for us, we realize that and we are looking at our future ... with kindly eyes. We're waiting the moment when our careers be over and we'll can spend more time together.

- Tell me about Sasha. What is he?
- He's very calm person. He's funny. He is working very hard.I like to watch him practicing. He is very family person. Handsome.Of course handsome.

- What did you dream about when you were a kid?
- I dreamed to be number one in tennis.
- What about now?
- Same plan. Come back there.
- Is it so good, to be number one?
- Sure!"

My interview with Masha Sharapova in the December issue of Instyle

It was urgent, and wildly secret mission.
I got a call from Instyle and offered to make of the cover interview for the New Year rates - with a kind of "Russian-American tennis player." Recently I had a lot more interviews with the athletes - and they belong to the category of special complexity, yet it is the guys who are accustomed to act, not talk.
What to Masha, here there was another zakovyka - her imperfect Russian. Those brief interview that she gave Russian journalists after the match, only intensified the alarm.
But as you know, for we have no difficulties, there is only call)) Here's the result - my interview with Maria Sharapova in the December Instyle. (By the way, love to write in such cases in the magazines about the life of stars, this is the first interview she gave after the engagement)

Maria Sharapova is not so bad says in Russian. In fact, it is not bad for an adult, left Russia in the age of nine. She spoke in Russian fluently, and feels that it does not give her any trouble, but her speech is the angularity, awkward pace - as if she was still a teenager.

"I really like this!" - This is about yesterday's shooting for Instyle. - When you style your hair, make-up, dress cool ... You have such great clothes that do not wear every day! " And the enthusiasm with which Maria says it makes a resemblance to the teenager even more.

Pondering a while, she continues: "At such moments I feel as though I no longer Maria Sharapova and the other girl, some kind of actress. If I'm playing a role. It's great. And I specifically call for such shooting my friends and we laugh with them and chatting all the time. "

- Frequently laughing?

- Yes, I love to laugh. And like when I am surrounded by gay people. Simple and good-natured, which is easy. I have no better plan for the evening than to sit in a circle of friends and laugh at all this nonsense. Or, I always terribly amused my stylist's hair. He was here yesterday on the shooting. He has such character ... You can say, fantastic. All the time he danced, he jokes, he's always a good mood. It is worth it just to talk ... whether there is something in it in his eyes, or how he says it, but all around there and then sprinkle with laughter.

- How do you wear in which you acted yesterday? I wanted something to keep yourself?

- There was something about it. By the end of shooting, I sat in a long dress by Chloe, very beautiful. One shot, it was decided to shoot on the street. The sun had set, so that the installed artificial light. And I stood there in that dress from Chloe, his beautiful skirt blowing wind, and in his hand I was conceived, was holding a light sweater. It turned out incredibly elegant. That is to me like crazy. In general, I'm awfully fond of elegant, classic dresses.

- But you have the same great legs! You sin not to wear short.

- I think I have enough of what I'm on the court always in short dresses. But in ordinary life, I often wear short shorts. Yesterday, incidentally, was shot in the shorts Armani, very nice, especially when combined with a beautiful sweater with an open shoulder. And, of course, in such cases is important high heel. With such a heel, even well wear something shorter - the legs are even longer.

She was twenty-three, and she - Russia's most popular female athlete the last decade. The first Russian tennis player, became the first racket of the world. She was eighteen when she entered the hundred "most influential celebrities" Forbes (only one of the Russians), and People magazine included her in the top fifty most beautiful people on the planet. She - the richest Russian athlete, earning about twenty million dollars a year. And the first thing she said to me in an interview - it's asking for forgiveness. "Forgive me for this voice, I just. A week ago we had a rainy weather. So far, cough, and a voice that's ...". Maria theatrical sighs, putting in that sigh his whole regret giving me her voice podosipshim inconvenience - and coughs, just in case. However, here, she hurries to reassure me: The common cold is retreating, and with every day Maria is getting better. And after her interviews, with a break that Sharapova is called "light perekuskoy, expects a full workout. "When I first got sick, then took a break for three days. And for me for three days at home - it's too much" - she laughs.

Masha woke up at eight in the morning. Now nine, and for the past hour she had to go in the shower, talk with your mom and check e-mail ("Nothing really interesting. Basically, everything - on paper. The agent wrote here that I have not forgotten that I am with an interview ). Masha is sitting on a bed in his bedroom, dressed in tennis - a vest and pants "- and talks about their favorite brands. "I am - a big fan of Stella McCartney. I love Chloe. I love Isabel Mara. Lightweight fine things." However, when you make a career in sports, you can afford to wear your favorite clothes only from time to time. "In an airplane. At business meetings. At parties sponsors" - lists Masha. New Year's Eve? No, the New Year will not be. Sharapova flies to play in New Zealand. In the past year? Played in Hong Kong. At Christmas - Australia. "Quit somewhere in the New Year, celebrate in the good, in Russian - this is when I'm finished with tennis" - simply explains Mary.

We talk on the phone, and my head comes with an idea. "Describe to me your house" - I suggest, and Mary begins: "He is standing on the beach. Very modern. A lot of glass. It has three floors, but it is not very long." (Later I found it on the Internet. Valid: light construction with large windows directed upward and laterally very closely sandwiched between two similar white houses of a smaller size - the area was planned in view of exorbitant prices for land on the waterfront). "Technicians are not very many - continue to Masha, - so, television, music, where to put the iPod ... There are a machine, Jaguar". My guess is that her room to the ceiling littered with toys - gifts from fans, but in response to Masha laughing again. "No, no, no, not like anything. No unnecessary things. I'm in the room - very clean. The blue and gold. Bed, computer landscape depicting the Gulf. All."

In a room with Masha - her dog, a Pomeranian named Dolce. "This is the" cream "in Italian - pretty reports Masha. "I've never seen such in Russia. It looks like a little fox. A lot of wool! So weird, I do not know why we bought a dog. We've never had them. Only when we lived in Sochi, we had a cat . And here I was four years ago I saw this dog in the store, and she liked me so, I asked my parents permission, and now it is ours. When I was here - she is always with me. When I left - with his mother. "

Here we should mention that this is not the only satellite, which could be the last time to see Mary. For a year Sharapova meets with Serbian basketball player Sasha Vuyachich playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. In late October of 2010, newspaper headlines blossomed "Sasha and Masha - Vuyachich did Mary offer. That did not deny anything, and the propagation of journalists about how Sasha was asked for her hand, said it "does not tell you about this ever." I just want to know whether to hand her an engagement ring right now. "Yes, I did the first thing put on, do not forget" - Masha smiling.

- Wedding Date is already known?

- No, not yet. We are still young, and we have so much to do! In front of lots and lots of work, so that the wedding date will not be soon.

- Career, career, career?

- Yes. And not because "as necessary". And because I really like what I'm working on, and I believe I can achieve even greater ... Sasha and I know that we have each other, and we will support each other. He has - hard career, I have - very heavy, and moreover not very long. After some time we were waiting for family life, we are well aware of this and look at the future ... kind eyes. We are calmly waiting for that moment when our careers will be finished and we can spend more time together.

- How do you as a child represented her future wedding? I've heard all the girls fantasize about such things.

- (Laughs) No, no, I was not like that! Never even thought of! Well, that is, of course, I knew that the moment will come when I meet someone with whom I want to spend my life. But, unlike other girls who loved to talk about wedding dresses, I just perceived marriage as something that will certainly happen to me, but in some distant and unrealistic future. And incidentally, the same unrealistic it seemed to me and when I was, say, eighteen.

- Tell me about Sasha. What is it?

- He's a very quiet man. He was funny. He has a lot of work. I like to watch how he trains. He is a very family. Beautiful. Of course, beautiful.

- Have you ever thought about the children?

- Yes, but this is still far away. You know, when you asked is whether I have my wedding ... So, I've always fantasized about a time when I have kids. Because I love children. Maybe it's because of the fact that my mom was very young when I was born, and now we had very close friends. She was twenty ... However, for me, this train seems to have already left.

- What are you dreaming, when she was a child?

- I wanted to be the first racket of the world.

- And what - now?

- Now I have similar plans. Return there.

- There's so well in the first place?

- Of course! All the difficulties that had to endure for the sake of it, it's all worth it.

The main difficulties began in 2008. Started the year with 27 positions in the world ranking, Sharapova has won several major tournaments, and by May once again reached the first place. However, in August it became apparent that her right shoulder needs surgery. So Mary left tennis for nearly nine months. "The injury is not immediately noticed - she explains - and it so happened that I played with her a couple of months, why it got worse."

For Sharapova, which is its main drawback is called impatience, this theme - not a pleasant one. "The operation took twenty-five minutes, and then six months it took to restore the shoulder" - her voice is heard surprise. "As many as six months - she repeats.

As to the current state of affairs, for Sharapova has everything nice. Strays was the best hundred tennis players because of injury and surgery, in 2010 she graduated in the top twenty. "I'm much better - she agrees - though the shoulder is still reacting to the cold and the harsh weather changes. Not that it hurt like before, but it takes more time for exercise and massage. And so - okay." And he adds: "pah-pah-pah."

"I am a happy person - responds to my last question Masha. - Happy and grateful. I rejoice in little things - flowers, small gifts, how to run up to woof dog when I get home. Life is - not an easy thing: now you all are according to plan, and the next - everything changes. Often it simply means that you need to consider everything as it should, and perhaps look at the situation from a new angle. " By the way she says it, it becomes clear that the situation when it comes to "think things" happen to it more than once. She also says that we have just time to say goodbye, because before training were in minutes. Maria Sharapova ends in the same interview, where to begin - she says, "Sorry."

I cannot find it, so maybe it is not an old photo. It seems like I have seen it, though.

Sharapova will play in the Federation Cup match against French women - Tarpishchev

MOSCOW, November 30 - RIA Novosti. Maria Sharapova will play for Team Russia's tennis quarterfinal match of Federation Cup season 2011 against the French women, said team captain Shamil Tarpishchev at a press conference on Tuesday.

"Состав сборной России в первом круге Кубка Федерации таков: Мария Шарапова, Динара Сафина, Светлана Кузнецова и Анастасия Павлюченкова", - сообщил Тарпищев. "Composition of the Russian team in the first round Fed Cup is as follows: Maria Sharapova, Dinara Safina, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova," - said Tarpishchev.

According to him, the first Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva "because of contractual obligations on private tournament play against the French women will not.

"Но она пообещала, что приедет в сборную на матч второго круга вне зависимости от того, с кем мы будем его играть", - добавил Тарпищев. "But she has promised that he would go to the squad for the match of the second round regardless of who we'll play it" - added Tarpishchev.

Quarterfinals of the Fed Cup Russia - France will meet in Moscow on February 5-6. If successful, Tarpishchev wards will compete in the semifinals against the winner of the match, in which meet Australian and current Italian champions.

Reported on November 30, 2010

Russian Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev says that Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Dinara Safina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will be Russia's line-up for its first-round tie against France in Moscow on Feb. 5-6.

"Sharapova has agreed to play the first round," said Tarpishchev.

However, a source in the Sharapova camp told TENNIS.com that she’s only “very likely” to play. Sharapova must make herself available to play Fed Cup at least once next year if she wants to play the 2012 Olympics, and could play in another round. She’s competed in Fed Cup once, in 2008, against Israel after winning the Australian Open.—Matthew Cronin

To be eligible to play the Olympics, she only has to make herself available for Fed Cup ties...

She doesn't actually have to play any!

Specifically, official nominations are due Jan 26. The captain can make substitutions until 24 hours before the first match.

In tennis, NO committment is anything more than "very likely" until the girl shows up & walks on court. Yank sports press "sources" never see that as an issue with a Williams, no matter how many times they flake out.

It's ALWAYS an issue when it's about Sharapova playing for Russia.

They'll carry on, doubting she'll play until she does--then they'll black out coverage, just like they did when she played against Israel.

No fair! And no wonder she is somewhat 'under-rated'. (me I'm happy to tip the scales back the other way).
