MARIA SHARAPOVA

Q. How difficult did you find the wind today?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, it was certainly different than the previous two matches. But, you know, going into the warmup, you know it’s going to be out there. You feel it. It’s pretty much the same for your opponent.

I think it’s just about being patient and, you know, maybe a little bit smarter. But, yeah, overall it was all right. Considering the conditions, I’m pretty happy with the way I played.

Q. Did you ever recall a serve before where the ball bounced before it got to the net?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Oh, yeah, I’m sure I have. A lot in practice.

Q. Did you see any of the men’s match last night?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Just the end, the last few games.

Q. What is your reaction?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: The reaction? It was either that or the soccer. I think that’s better for me, at least.

Well, I mean, when the guy’s firing missiles left and right, going for broke, I think it’s one of those days.

Obviously, you know, I’m sure Rafa feels it was unfortunate he was the one across the net. Yeah, it’s tennis. We can never underestimate who we’re going up against.

We always say how you can be ranked 1 or 100, and they still have to put the net up for you to play the match. That’s why we’re here.

Q. Do you think it’s harder as a player to take a loss like that when it’s not expected?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, losses are tough in any circumstance. Obviously when you’re in a fifth set it’s probably extremely difficult because it was back and forth, back and forth.

I mean, you can be in the final of a Grand Slam or second round, and at the end of the day there’s only one winner. That’s what makes the game so special, is because you have so many players. The feeling of winning is extra special because you’re the only one, you know, and everyone is going home.

As sad as that sounds, it’s really the reality of it. But yet that’s what we aim to do. We aim to win. We aim to be that one.

Q. I’m sorry to have to ask this question. I’m sure you get peppered with these questions all the time, but it’s relevant because the opponent you play on Monday, Lisicki she moaned about her second‑round opponent, Jovanovski, based on the amount of noise she made across the net. The noise was toned down. In a similar situation, would you talk to the umpire? Would you even react to it? Have you been in that situation before?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I haven’t been in that situation, and if I am, I’ll tell you about it after.

Q. Are you progressing through the tournament?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, you have to improve with every match. That’s my goal, within these two weeks, is to get better as you face more challenging opponents.

The last two matches have been tough. I feel like they were really good grass court players. The ball stayed extremely low, so quite dangerous.

In today’s conditions, I think it evens out the level a little bit. Yeah, of course, I’m happy to be in the fourth round, but there’s always room for improvement.

Q. I wanted to ask about your opponent today. It was the first time she played on No. 1 Court. Were there elements of her game that surprised you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, do you think she played like that because she was on Court 1? I think she just always plays like that.

I faced her many times in the juniors. She used to be a nightmare for me because she used to slice and dropshot on clay. I was like, Where did they learn how to play tennis like that? Uses both hands, switches racquets.

We used to have real battles in the juniors, and we haven’t played since then. I knew her game really well. I don’t think she had time to do all of that today on grass. If I’m hitting a hard‑paced shot, I don’t think she really has time to create, which is something that she really likes to do. That’s her game, is to hit a lot of dropshots and slices and get people kind of crazy.

Q. Are you eager to wipe out your reputation as a clay court specialist?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Since when did that start (smiling)?

Q. Two weeks ago.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I don’t know. That’s not for me to say.

Q. How has the transition been to grass, and how are you thinking now that you’ve mastered really all surfaces?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered all the surfaces. You can never feel satisfied with whatever you have achieved or not. You always have to look for something else or else you’re never going to have any motivation. I always feel like I can be better in anything that I play. That’s what gets me going.

But, yeah, as far as the transition, I enjoy it. The points are obviously not so long. But I feel like you learn so much on the clay: the point construction, the movement, the rallies. You see it so much better.

You come here and it’s really about the first two shots. If you’re on the defense, pretty tough to win the points. I mean, over the years it’s certainly slowed down, but it’s still in the same sort of line.

Q. (No microphone.)

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I mean, I feel like over the years so many things have changed. Even I look back to when I won here in ’04, I mean, the speed of this court was quite different. I think it was much faster than it is now. Look back five years before that and it was like another story.

So, I mean, racquets, technologies, we always change balls, so many new things always go on, everyone always tries to look for the better and the bigger. I think the game just kind of changed a little bit as the years go on.

Lisicki and Maria have played before. If she hadn't complained before, why now? Maria has been grunting since she was 7years old. She's not going to change for anyone. Just like her routines of turning her back on her opponents between points. They are all part of her winning game.

The media have nothing to talk about so they keep repeating the same questions. Like a gramophone needle stuck in a groove.

S. LISICKI/M. Sharapova 6‑4, 6‑3

MARIA SHARAPOVA

Q. How frustrating was it and how crucial was the first set?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, certainly had chances; I didn’t take them. But I think I a lot of the credit goes to my opponent. She played extremely well today and did many things better than I did on this given day. You just have to hand it to her.

Q. Was her serving very well? Was that the key point?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I mean, that’s a big part of her game. I mean, here it helps her extremely, extremely well.

Q. Were you surprised because you were coming in feeling very good and she just played well, or was it because you played a long French Open and you weren’t quite feeling yourself the last couple of weeks?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I feel extremely well. Why shouldn’t I?

No, like I said, she did many things much better than I did today. Of course, could have done things differently, absolutely, but not on this particular day.

Q. You mentioned the level of her game today. In general, what are your thoughts on the place she might take among the top players, yourself included?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: She’s always had that potential. Obviously she did really well here last year getting to the semifinals. I haven’t really followed her results too much in the last year.

You know, I mean, if she plays at this level, of course she belongs at the top. If she serves as well as she did today and is as aggressive as she was, there’s no doubt she has a lot of potential.

You know, it goes for saying that it’s not just about one tournament; you have to do it for as many tournaments as you play or as much as you can obviously.

Q. Beyond the serve, what do you consider the best parts of her game?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, she stays really low. She’s a strong girl. She hits the ball really hard. If you don’t get a good first ball on her, I mean, she likes to be the aggressive one and likes to start the point with a really heavy shot.

Q. Was there a turning point in this game when you started to realize it was going to get tough today?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: There’s not one moment in the match where you think like that. I mean, I was down 2‑5, got back on serve, and I had opportunities for it to be 5‑All. Played a few sloppy points and she raised her level.

That just wasn’t a good combination for me. And, yeah, I mean, that was the first set. She came after the rain delay really firing.

Q. Could you step back for a moment and talk about the European swing, Stuttgart, Rome, Paris, then the loss here.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved. Obviously, as tough as it is to sit here being an athlete after a loss ‑ it’s only been 30, 40 minutes, you know ‑ you always try to take away as many positives as you can.

Obviously, you can only use it as motivation. It will be nice to rest for a little bit and be in a home atmosphere. I’ve missed it for over two months.

But, yeah, once I relax a little bit, I’m sure to use this as great motivation and keep going after the many goals that I have.

Q. Is the Roland Garros‑Wimbledon back to back as tough a challenge in women’s tennis as anything?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: It is, but it’s certainly no excuse. Everyone has to go about it as best as they can, yeah.

Q. You talk about the motivation you would take out of here. How would the possible loss of the top ranking that you have worked your way into play into that?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I’m not sure. I don’t know. It’s all kind of irrelevant at this point. Obviously what I achieved a few weeks ago doesn’t just go away in a few minutes. I’ll have that for the rest of my career.

But the tennis world always keeps going. You have to raise your level at that point, even when your opponent plays really great tennis. Just today wasn’t my day.

But as far as that motivation, of course you want to stay at the top as long as you can. Obviously everyone guns for that spot, as it is the top spot.

Q. What were the main differences in her game from when you played in Melbourne?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I don’t really like to compare previous encounters because they’re always different. That was a three‑set match on hard court. This is grass; it’s completely different; it’s not comparable.

Q. Is it tougher to win Wimbledon today than it was when you last won it?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I don’t know. I don’t know how to answer that. I mean, nothing is easy, certainly not a Wimbledon title.

So I don’t know if it’s easier or tougher now than it was years ago but I don’t think it’s ever easier.

Q. Do you think there’s more players perhaps that might be able to catch a hot day?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, anyone can. I think anyone has a chance. The girl I played today obviously performed well here, so it’s not a big surprise she can go out and play a great grass court match.

Q. Was today one of those days where you said it doesn’t matter how hard you fight, change strategy, if the quality doesn’t come, she’s going to get you anyway?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Maybe I can think about it like now, but not really during the match. You always try to find ways to get into it, even if you feel your level is just not there. Maybe you’re just a little slow, you try to pump yourself up.

Maybe if I look back now, I think yeah. But not in the moment of the match.

Q. Last week with Nadal’s loss there was plenty of discussion on the depth on the men’s tour where on any day any top 100 player could beat one of the best. What are your thoughts on the lessons about the depth on the women’s tour?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I don’t think it’s a lesson really for the players. I think it’s a lesson more for the storylines. We never really underestimate any opponents, and that’s the reason why ‑‑ if people are going to be considered favorites in matchups and tournaments, obviously everyone’s job here is to have those storylines.

At the end of the day, the reason we start at the first round is you have to go through all those opponents to get to the final stage of a tournament, whether it’s a Grand Slam or the middle of nowhere. That’s the reason we go out and play.

It could be the No. 1 seed against someone that’s, you know, come out of the woods. It doesn’t matter, you still have to go and play and win.

On any given day, of course there can be an upset. That’s the sport. That’s why we watch.

From Maria's website:

Second half of 2012 schedule
After the Olympics, Maria will play two hardcourt events before the US Open at Montreal and Cincinnati.

Maria will head to Montreal to play the Rogers Cup which begins on August 7th and then try to defend her title at the Western & Southern Open in Cinncinati and that begins one week later.

Maria will then take a week off to prepare for the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open in New York which begins on August 25th.

After the US Open, Maria will play two events on the Asian leg of the calendar: Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo which will begin on September 29th and the China Open in Beijing which begins a week later.

Maria hasn't officially qualified for the final event of the year at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul, Turkey at the end of October but there is a very strong chance she will with her record so far this year.

Predictable and same as every year but I like this schedule. Only biggest and most important tournaments.

It might depend on how deep she goes for Gold. Three tournaments back to back is tough and that is made much worse by the switch from grass to HC. Maybe she'll do an Azzo to save another zero tournament.

Agree.

Being in London 10 days before Olympics is balanced time for me.
She has been in Europe for 3 months and it's enough time to be away from home.
I think the most important part right now in her preparation for second part of the season is just rest with family and friends which recharge her battery and give her new breathe.

I have to admit, I bought the app after Maria recommended it and it's so good! I've taken such goo pictures that would have sucked without the app.
Maria really is a little hipster, she even dressed like one.

Here is my translation of Maria's interview about OG from "Soviet sport", which was taken during Wimbledon. Sorry, my english is not perfect.

- I received message with offer to be flagbearer after 3R match in Paris vs Shuai Peng. I was over the moon! I showed the message from Tarpischev to everyone and asked "Guys, am I understanding this correctly?". During three days I just couldn't believe this isn't a dream.

- Tarpischev even flied to Paris to see your final. Did you meet him?

- Of course! But we spoke about RG more. Shamil Anvyarovich congratulated me, then we spoke about OG. He asked if I want to be a flagbearer. Of course I wanted! How could be any doubts for this??

- By the way, carrying a flag is very hard.

- But I won't carry it with one hand. (Maria laughing) As far as I know, there is a special body corset which will help carry the flag. So there won't be any problems.

- How did your family and friends react?

- How could they react? They were happy for me! I posted about this on facebook and hundreds of fans were happy for me as well. I said many times, said sincerely, Olympics is the dream of my life. Since my childhood, when I was a little girl watching Kafelnikov's matches in Sydney, I dreamed about winning a medal for my country. And now this dream can come true.

- There is a high responsibility for flagbearers. Does this scare you?

- I got used to be responsible, firstly, for myself. For extreme motivation there is no need to be a flagbearer. If I will be in good form, ready to fight for the victory, status of flagbearer won't affect my game.

- Do you believe in superstitions? Roger Federer was the flagbearer twice, but didn't win gold medal in singles.

- No, i don't. I even don't think about this. Oh, and I'm not Federer

Maria Sharapova is getting down to the details for her November Istanbul wedding to basketballer boyfriend Sasha Vujacic. The date has been reported as November 10, the start of the off-season in WTA tennis.

French Open champion Sharapova and Vujacic, who plays for the city’s Anadolu Efes club are reportedly due to marry outdoors in the city where Europe meets Asia. The pair have been together since 2009.

It’s been tough to actually work out a date for the pair of international sportsmen, with crowded tennis and basketball schedules responsible. The date has been changed several times due to timing but the way now seems clear to stage the ceremony.

World No. 3 Sharapova has been dreaming of a small and intimate wedding with only family and closest friends present.

I think it is a rumour that is doing its rounds. Someone started it and different media picks it up and prints it changing the wordings slightly. Maria herself has not confirmed it so I do not listen to rumours. Besides, she will be playing an exhibition match with Petra in Prague about a week before her wedding?? Doesn't she need to prepare and plan her big day?

- When do you go to London?

- Part of the team leaves on 15th of July, others on 16. We will be training in Stoke Park. There are 6 courts, 2 of them with roof.

- When will Sharapova arrive?

- Maria will have shoot with Novak Djokovic in Stoke park on 21th July. Interesting thing, Novak will participate in our training process. But I think Masha will be training not only with Djokovic but with teammates.

Then a second version appeared during February, third in March. It was not known outside Russia until some small internet sites copied it and publish in English. From there it was printed again in Russian newspapers, but this time in more serious publications and the rounds began.
The current rumour wave began with a short article in London's Evening Standard few weeks ago.

Adir writing about Maria's hair for ESPYs:
To elongate this look I created some height to the front of maria's hair and kept the sides clean, sleek, and modern. I wanted to give the back a more romantic feel, so I twisted the hair and pined it in place. Make sure to backcomb the roots first, that is the trick.

And lately a lot of Turkish media are writing about every move Maria makes... :)

I agree. Especially hope that she is happy and ok. In Wimbledon in many off court pics and interview she seemed very relaxed and happy, in other occassions, especially on court she seemed moody and like she was struggling, at least to me, I attributed that to mental and physical tiredness after RG. Hope it was just that.
As far as Sasha goes... He is not bad looking at all :p, if you ask me, but ok, looks are a matter of taste. Yes, he has an ego, yes he can over-react a lot of times while playing basketball, as we have seen in matches... But let's be honest, Maria has an "ego" too, she wouldn't have survived easily the first few years in America in the Bolletierri Academy and a few other low hits in her career from people, if she didn't have one. Sasha isn't as rich as Maria or such a celebrity s she is, but he seems like a caring guy, if you like I can post in his thread another article about his uncle, how attached he was to him and how much his death affected him... I got the impression that if he loves something or someone he gives himself fully into that. I could be wrong though. And all jokes aside now... You guys know that I, and some of other members here, follow a Russian forum about WTA tour. And there was posted the pic of her training on court, which I linked in the pictures thread here; that picture was taken in LA. Are they together or aren't they? Nobody knows. Until we see a picture of them or a statement, we can only speculate, based on rings, facebook entries, body language that we see for a few seconds or minutes and so on... I hope neither of them is suffering... Ending a relationship is a complicated thing and it bugs you for some time, even if you are the one who did it. So like I said, I hope nothing like that is going on. The speculations are getting wilder and wilder... A lot of people have started wondering all over the internet. That is the way it goes when you are a public figure.
I appologize for the long post.

Well, I don't know if there is new information in it (for example, I threw away information about Justine Henin and cat-and-mouse game cause I definitely read it somewhere). Sorry, guys, my english is not perfect. Hope you enjoy it!

DAY SEVEN

Six days a week Maria Sharapova is devoted to trainings. During her only day off Maria met Dasha Veledeeva and told why she follows classical style in clothing

Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon at 17, at 25 She gained career Grand Slam. Today She is number 1. (note: well, not anymore:sad:) It seems there is nothing to dream about, but there is one award that Maria misses. Since childhood she dreamed about olympic gold, but destiny went otherwise. Maria missed Olympic games in 2004 and 2008. But this year she's not only participating, but carrying the flag at the opening ceremony.
Masha will be playing on Wimbledon courts again, but this time it will be another story. "These courts are special - where all the tennis traditions came from. You just feel belonging to the history. It's a pity that there is no need to wear all white. Besides, there are no logos here, cause Wimbledon hasn't any sponsors. All this will be during olympic matches, I think, so atmosphere will be completely different". "I saw your schedule for this year and was scared. Do you have any days without trainings?" - I asked. "Well, I had a day-off at my Birthday, - Maria laughing. - I invited friends to my home in Santa-Barbara. We attended Florence+The Machine concert and next day just hacked around".
"I read newspapers and find out many new things about myself! There was written that I have a wedding in November. I was suprised and thought, well, maybe it's time to start picking wedding dress, just not miss my own wedding!" - "You attended differrent events and red carpets frequently. How long are you interested in fashion?" - "I just like beautiful clothing, and it's quite understandable. When you're wearing sport clothes six days a week, you just want to dress up for day seven".
When Maria was 8 she moved to US with father and didn't see her mother for 2 years. "Once in 3 week both I and my mother received letters. It was normal thing those days, there was no skype or e-mail. But if we had to be separate now, it may be even harder, cause when you see a person in skype and hear a voice, you just want to be closer more and more". And there is evidence for these words. When stylist put on Maria short wig, she immediately sended MMS with her new "haircut" to her boyfriend Sasha Vujacic. But they can meet very rarely, cause he's playing for Turkish basketball team. "It's hard but we deal with it. We are involved in sports so it's helping".
But let's go back to the fashion. When Maria's mother finally came to States, they went shopping once and Maria was crazy about all bizarre clothes for teens in shop windows. But wise mother convinced daughter, that it's better to buy a piece of clothes which never go out of fashion then those thing you'll be bored of in 3 months. "I have a photo of myself at 12-13 age. I'm under Christmas tree in cashmere sweater and trousers - Can you imagine modern teen wearing this?"
Now Maria attached to classical style in clothing. Her favourites - Stella McCartney and Chloe ("perfect style"), Alexander McQueen ("adore for originality"), Isabel Marant ("best trousers for travelling"). Oncourt she's playing in her own dresses. "It's great that I can draw a sketch of dress which I'll wear myself and someone will buy it in shop. May be after finishing my career I'll devote myself to designing:)"

"Well, I had a day-off at my Birthday, - Maria laughing. - I invited friends to my home in Santa-Barbara. We attended Florence+The Machine concert and next day just hacked around".
"I read newspapers and find out many new things about myself! There was written that I have a wedding in November. I was suprised and thought, well, maybe it's time to start picking wedding dress, just not miss my own wedding!"

This part is the most interesting for me. Now it's official that wedding in November is a rumour. Also great to know that she went to the Florence + the Machine's concert during her birthday ;)

According to this article, she will stay at the Wimbledon Village because the Olympic Village is too far away. Makes sense.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the tennis players stay at Wimbledon during the Olympics.

Maria Sharapova would not be staying at the athlete´s village during the London Olympics

World number three Maria Sharaova of Russia has shared that she would be staying at the Wimbledon Village during the London Olympics.

World number three Maria Sharaova of Russia has shared that she would be staying at the Wimbledon Village during the London Olympics.
The Russian has provided the reason for not staying at the Olympics Village for athletes that its distance is too much from the All England Club, where tennis event of the biggest sports meet in the world will be held.
During her latest interview, Sharapova was asked if she would stay at the Wimbledon Village instead of the Athlete’s Village. The Russian replied, “Yes, it’s too far to be in the Athletes’ Village. It’s unfortunately so far, as it’s like an hour’s drive. I wish I could, but that would be too much.”
Sharapova will be taking part in the Olympics for the first time in her career as he failed to participate at the Beijing Games four years ago due to a shoulder injury.
When the Russian was asked if these Olympics would be more special to her from the fact that she missed the last edition, she replied, “Absolutely. It was really tough to miss the last one with injury, knowing how important the Olympics is in Russian culture, seeing the Russian people get together and follow it and talk about it for two weeks. I grew up in that culture, and admired it, and now I want to be a part of it.”
Sharapova became just the 10th women in the history of the sport to win all four Grand Slams when she grabbed the French Open title in June. She was also the favorite to clinch Wimbledon crown but she was stunned by Germany’s Sabine Lisicki in straight sets 4-6, 3-6 in the fourth round.

NO WHITES, SO WHO WILL BE WEARING WHAT AT THE OLYMPICS?

by Mark Hodgkinson
Wednesday 18 July 2012
It's going to be strange but also exciting, says Maria Sharapova. Serena Williams doesn't quite know how she will feel about it. Forget the beach volleyball outfits at Horse Guards Parade, or any sprinters wearing gold spikes. It will be the competitors' choice of clothes and shoes in the south west of the city, at the All England Club, that will attract the most attention and comment during the London Olympic Games. For the first time, tennis players who step on the Wimbledon grass wearing coloured gear will not be politely asked to return to the locker-room to change into something 'predominantly white' (during this summer's Championships, Victoria Azarenka had to change after she initially wore a yellow T-shirt on the practice court).

Players will have the freedom to wear any colour they choose at the All England Club. It will be the strongest reminder, for any casual viewer who flicks on to the tennis, that they are not watching a second 'regular' Championships at the Club, but something different. You can be sure that a lot of planning will be going into what some of the players will wear for the Olympic tennis tournament; Sharapova is one of those who would never just throw an outfit together on the morning of a match ("I planned my outfit some time ago - it's based around the colours of my country"). Expect something classy from Sharapova, who at past white Wimbledons has worn outfits inspired by swans and men's tuxedos: "I think it's really exciting, and will be a little strange and fun to wear colour at Wimbledon. I'm looking forward to it."

Players, and their country's clothing suppliers, will have put a great deal of thought into this. Most will playing in their country's colours. Roger Federer will be wearing a red polo shirt with the 'RF' logo on the sleeve and the Swiss Cross on his chest, with white shorts, and red and white shoes, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be wearing a blue shirt, blue shorts, and red shoes. Part-time clothes designer Venus Williams has looked to the Stars and Stripes for inspiration: 'It's the Olympics, and so it won't be another Wimbledon, so that's what makes it different. We'll be wearing team colours. Red, white, blue - and hopefully gold."

Images have already been released of how Andy Murray will be dressed for the tennis, in a red, white and blue outfit designed by Stella McCartney, and also of Caroline Wozniacki's red Olympic dress.

For Serena Williams, playing at Wimbledon in anything other than 'predominantly white' will be "weird".

"I don't know how I will feel about playing tennis at Wimbledon during the Olympics as I understand that we won't be wearing white. I'm going to feel weird not wearing white at Wimbledon. I absolutely love wearing white. When I played at Eastbourne once, I wasn't wearing white and that didn't seem right - I felt as though, as I was on grass, I should be wearing white."

At first, it will look a little odd - there is no stronger brand in tennis than the clothing rule at Wimbledon - but it will be a once-in-a-generation glimpse at an alternative tennis universe.

The hype about her outfit is growing in me.

Maria Sharapova not to stay in Athlete’s Village in London Olympics

Four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova is not going to stay in the Athlete’s Village during Olympic Games in London from this month ending.
25-year-old Sharapova is likely to stay in the Wimbledon Village, during her Olympics Games in London. Sharapova is one of the top prospects to win the gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, schedule to begin from 27th July and event will kick off at Wimbledon at All England Club. According to sources, Sharapova was asked if she would like stay at the Wimbledon Village instead of the Athlete’s Village.

Former World No. 1 Sharapova said she doesn’t want to travel long distance, as the Olympics Village for athletes, which was so far from the All England Club in London. Russian beauty has been taking part in Olympics for the first time in her career and going to carry on her national flag in Olympic Ceremony in London on 27th July.
World No. 3 Sharapova has become 10th player in the WTA history of the sport to win all four Grand Slams championships. Russian top seed has clinched 2012 French Open title in June at Roland Garros, after beating Italian Sara Errani in consecutive sets

This will be my third try. She skipped Montreal 2 years ago after losing the Cincinnati final to Kim. And then I had great tickets in Toronto last year and she lost to the likes of Voskoboeva the night before. Luckily I saw Serena v. Can I just share this after playing Serena for the first time.

After loss to Serena Williams 2004 Miami

Q. Can you talk about the match today. What was the difference?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, the experience. I mean, there are many big differences, you know. I mean, even though she's been out for so long, you know, she still has many qualities of a champion out there, you know, no matter how long she's been out.

You know, I went out there and I thought I played a pretty decent match. I was pretty much in control in the first set until she broke me, and I felt really good. I felt that I had a few breakpoints, but she just managed just to make a good serve. That was the difference.

Just little things here and there that I still need to improve.

Q. Is it the first time you played her?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yep.

Q. How does her power stack up against some of the other top players even though she's been out for a while?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, definitely, I mean, she has so much power. She's very strong, as you can see. No matter how long she was gone, she's still back. I think she really played well today considering that she's been gone for so long.

Q. How did you like your chances going into the match? How did you feel?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I felt pretty good. I had nothing to lose in the match; I knew that. She's been out for eight months. I was just going to go out there and play my game and enjoy it and have fun, and I did.

I thought, I mean, there were very positive things that I found in my game against a top player like her. So I definitely enjoyed it.

Q. Such as...?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I mean, those things about the game I just like to keep to myself.

But, you know, just looking ahead in my career and just thinking of what I need to improve and then what I needed to improve and now that I'm improving it, it makes me feel more confident.

Q. Do you feel that it's a lost opportunity, that this was a good chance to beat Serena?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, no, it's not a lost opportunity. I'm going to have many more opportunities in my life.

Q. You never really know until you're out there hitting against her, but how impressed were you with the power of her game?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I mean, you know, she's a very strong lady. Definitely she has a lot of power. I mean, yes, she looks like she's powerful, you know, but there are many other things in tennis except power. I mean, tennis is not all about power. You can take spectators, they'll have a lot of power, but they don't know how to play the game. You need a lot more to play the game. She definitely has those good qualities.

Q. Did she seem rusty to you at all?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No. I thought that yesterday she played -- I mean, today I thought she played a much better match than she did yesterday. But I was on the court, you know; yesterday I was just watching from the stands.

But, I mean, I didn't feel -- I mean, yes, she made a few errors on the return and stuff, but, you know, hey, maybe my serve was good, I don't know (laughing).

Q. What did you think of her outfit today, the crop top and short shorts?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I think that it's great. I mean, fashion these days in tennis definitely has been something that players can work with.

I definitely think that fashion can express the way you feel and the way you look, and I definitely think that it's very good for the sport. We don't have to wear uniforms, we don't have to kind of be in what everybody else is in, and I think this is a very good way just to show your personality when you go on court. I definitely think that, you know, everybody has their own unique opinion about what to wear and I think that's very good for tennis.

Q. Do you think Serena has a particular flair that way?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: What do you mean by "flair"?

Q. She has a unique eye for that sort of thing. She's involved in the designs of her outfits.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Definitely. I think every player wants to feel good on the court. Nobody wants to go out and feel, you know, uncomfortable in what we're wearing. I mean, they want to be satisfied.

This is a sport where you can go on the court, you can choose what you wear. I mean, you don't design it, you know, sometimes, but definitely if you don't feel comfortable wearing a skirt, you can wear shorts. It's not like you have to wear these big pads, this big uniform, this big jersey, and these big socks, hey, so...

You can just express more.

Q. You wore all those pads in a photo shoot, didn't you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I did. It wasn't very comfortable (smiling).

Q. Is there any intimidation factor going out ther against Serena even though she has been out this long?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I mean, like I said, it doesn't matter how long she was out. You just always have to focus on today and the way you're going to play and, I mean, no, you have to expect the best from her.

Q. So there is a little bit of an intimidation factor still?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I mean, she's not No. 1 in the world right now. But, you know, she's still a champion out there. Of course you just got to go out and fight.

Q. What's next for you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I'm pretty sure Berlin.

I think Maria used to be really close with lil Mash but their friendship faded after Maria started becoming super successful and popular.

I also don't think Maria likes the fact that Kiri started playing hockey during their last match.

Dunno... Cannot judge her Kiri relationship... They seem ok, I mean they met last year and it was kiss kiss on court... But somehow I get the impression that Vesnina is the one who accepts her more... I doubt she is closer to Sveta than to Vesnina. Afterall Sveta also commented on the "Unrussianess" of Maria... I invented a ridiculous word. Could be wrong though... It is all just a speculation.

look at these from 2003 :oh:

Sharapova proves quite a scream
By Mark Hodgkinson
(Filed: 11/06/2003)

Touted as the blonde heir apparent of Anna Kournikova, Maria Sharapova, a willowy 16-year-old, was attracting just as much attention at the DFS Classic yesterday for her ear-popping grunt.

Sharapova's shriek, comfortably the loudest on the women's tour, carried across four courts, up the bank and beyond the clubhouse during a first-round win on the Birmingham grass.

The Russian qualifier, though, claimed that she had never had any complaints about decibel levels. "But people sometimes think I'm doing it on purpose because I only grunt on some shots. I can't help it. I've been doing it since the age of four so it's difficult to stop," she said.

Monica Seles was asked to shoosh by the WTA - and subjected to a grunt-ometer by some tabloid newspapers - for less. A beaming John Crowther, the chief executive of the Lawn Tennis Association, agreed Sharapova "was probably louder than Monica".

Sharapova also plays tennis, yesterday bullying Evgenia Koulikovskaya, a higher-ranked compatriot, 6-1, 6-1, and with her ranking 125 and climbing, threatening to announce her talent at Wimbledon. Last year, she cruised the final of the girls' singles.

Talent-spotted by Martina Navratilova at seven, she moved to the Bollettieri Academy in Florida, not seeing her mother for two years. And coach Robert Lansdorp, the man who produced Tracy Austin, says that Sharapova's wrong-footing forehands are of a higher quality than those of his previous wunderkind.

Inevitably, though, the press wanted to discuss cheekbones and a ponytail flicking like sunshine. "I can't do anything about people making comparisons between myself and Anna. I don't pay it any attention. I'm not the next Anna. I'm the first me," she said.

But there is symmetry. Sharapova, like Kournikova, had, by 14, also developed media-cool and a sense of her own worth. "She can transcend tennis," one IMG representative said then. "Clothing, perfume, haircare products, anything." Photo-spreads in Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated appeared before she did.

Sharapova, although a stamp-collector, has a taste for the glitz, talking yesterday of a second career as a fashion designer or pop singer, but Lansdorp should provide a necessary leash. Austin once described him as "part-father, part-brother, part-tyrant - the perfect coach".

Britain's Anne Keothavong withdrew before her opening round match with tendinitis in her right wrist, the same injury that halted her run at Surbiton last week.

and Dechy complained about the grunt in 2003 at Birmingham

Sharapova told to tone it down

Russian teenage sensation Maria Sharapova, the girl with the biggest grunt since Monica Seles, was told to cut down the noise on the way to claiming the biggest win of her fledgling career.

The 16-year-old Florida-based beauty received her warning after her opponent, world number 24 Nathalie Dechy, complained midway through their second-round match at the DFS Classic in Birmingham.

Sharapova, who is certain to be a major attraction at Wimbledon later this month, agreed to curb her excessive screams and still won 6-3 6-2 against a player 100 places higher in the world rankings.

WTA tour supervisor Donna Kelso intervened after Dechy, the French number two and fifth seed, complained to umpire Kim Craven.

"There is a rule," said Dechy. "You are not supposed to scream like that."

Kelso said she also received a complaint from players on a neighbouring court.

"I asked Miss Sharapova if she could be a little bit quieter without wanting to disrupt her game," said the official.

"She didn't question it. There was no difference to the level of her play but there was a little less noise.

"Under the hindrance rule, a player could be subject first of all to a let and then to have the point replayed."

Sharapova, the leggy blonde who has been dubbed the "new Kournikova" because of her film-star looks, insisted her screeches were a natural reaction but agreed to try to tone them down.

"Dechy told the umpire I was grunting and she didn't like it," said the Serbian-born teenager.

"It's a natural instinct. I've been doing it all my life. I don't know I'm doing it. Once I think about it, I can try and control myself.

"It's not difficult to be quiet. You've just got to tell yourself not to grunt."

Here is translation of the funny article from russian newspaper "Sovier Sport". And again my English is not so good, but I hope you guys enjoy it!
http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/540304

3:0 Masha won. Sharapova defeated Djokovic - not only in tennis

First set. Tennis victory.

There was no rains on Saturday in Stoke Park. The sun came out, and the weather was wonderful. You may think it's because "Soviet Sport" journalist came to Stoke Park, but the reason is much simplier - Maria Sharapova joined russian tennis team (team staff connects weather changes with Maria's arrival).

There was family atmosphere in russian tennis team, but Maria made it even better - she came to team with... her mother! It's fonderful to see how mother's presence changes Maria who seems too cold for people seeing her in public places.

And here is idillic picture. Elena Petrovna came down to tennis court with book in her hands. Maria, training with Vera Zvonareva, waves to her: "Hi, mom! I'm here!". Elena Petrovna stops to watch her daughter playing. During break Maria comes running up to her mother, kisses her, hugging her shoulders: "What are you reading? May I see?" And, having opened the book, Maria childlishly begins carefully reading it right on court, therefore provoking joy and jokes from others. But this can't distract her from reading, while one person can... Novak Djokovic suddenly appeared on court.

- What is this serbian guy doing here? - I'm asking Maria.
- Ha, Just lost his number 1 spot after Wimbledon and wants to train with me to increase level of play, - Maria laughing and adds seriously: - We will have photoshoot together and Novak came earlier to train a bit.

- When was last time you played on grass? - Maria laughs after Novak's first bad shot.
- Haven't played since Wimbledon - Novak shouts from other side of the court.
- It's very-very evident - answers Maria while embarassing Novak with her killer forehand cross.
And Novak begins to play with all passion and trainig quickly transforms into real match with heavy raging shots. There is absolute silence around, cause all russian team stopped training to watch breathtaking match.
- I know, you, girls, like all these slices, - jokes Novak while running up to the ball. - But we deal with it just like this!
Novak hits ball heavily to the other side but Maria answers with lightning shot. Novak artistically falls down, showing all his disappointment.
- OMG, that was cool... - Maria's hitting partner Vladimir Volthckov seems still shocked.
- Ha! - laughs Maria while coming to her bench.

Second set. Flirting victory.

But it wouldn't be Djokovic, if he didn't try to reabilitate himself after such loss.
- You are in good form! - Novak pays a compliment.
- Aw, thank you - Maria smiling.
- I saw you had a fantastic season on clay, yeah?
- Yep - Maria doesn't want to play Novak's game which looks like common interview.
- I can't miss a chance to take photo with such a person, may I?
- Go ahead!
Having received high approval, Novak gives mobile phone to his masseur and sits near Maria on the bench.
- Done! - "photographer" shouts.
- Don't hurry, dude. You definitely spoiled it. Try to make a few more frames, different angles. There is no need to hurry in such things. - while saying this Novak snuggles up to Maria closer and closer and finally hugs her.
- Photoshoot is over!!! - Maria jumps from serbian embrace under common laughter, but Novak follows her.
- Just look, what a frame! - Novak runs towards Maria. - You like it, do you?
- Hm, this is not.. bad - answers Maria with a grin.
- I'm with closed eyes here! But if you like it, I send it to you right now, what is your number? - secret Novak's plan becomes obvious.
- Sir, you won't get my number!! - Maria grabs her bag and leaves Novak with nothing. 2:0!

Third set. Cinematographic victory.

In second part of the day there was another hard work for Maria - filming a commercial for Head. There was two plots. In the first Novak and Maria were hitting balls from one side of the river to another. Novak shows his miraculous shot, but Maria hits better with first attempt. Puzzled Djokovic sits on the lawn with the words "yeah, it looks like I need more practice." But in reality, Djokovic was on top. His shots landed on the other side of the river more often while Maria's landed in the river and disappeared.

You could say that Novak finally won set, but this set had tiebreak - that is the second story. And it wasn't sweet for Novak. He stands with open arms, while there is a can with tennis balls on his head. And Maria should hit it like Robin Hood. According to the scenario Maria misses and ball strikes Novak's... groin. He suffers from pain, and Maria throws her hands up and triumphantly says: "New balls, please!"

But German filming crew decided not to risk and asked Maria to hit hard, but off the aim. Insidious Sharapova, nodding understandingly, with each take was hitting ball closer and closer. At some point Novak instinctively bowed down.
- Cap, can I just close eyes? - prayed Djokovic, referring to the director. - Otherwise we will never shoot this scene.
That's how our flagbearer defeated Serbian. 3:0 Masha won!

I had my amazing and extremely comedic ( is that even a word!?) glam team there which makes these shoots an incredible artistic collaboration.
And the best part was that it was during my birthday weekend in Santa Barbara. We had a fun tapas dinner at a place which I now forgot the name of (that's because it feels ages ago!) and I finally got to see one of my favorite artists in concert...Florence and the Machine.
