I think thats a pretty fair analysis of the top 10 talent wise, Its basically saying 3-6 is very close and 7-9 is very close, I'm not knocking Dokic but I think thats a fair representation

Great analysis. Assuming (at my own peril:) ) that the serve is included in "groundstrokes" then I disagree with your assessment there. Serena's groundstrokes are head and shoulders above Hingis, Momo, Justine or Jen currently. But, I like your overall assessment.

HOW COULD YOU SAY VENUS IS MORE POWERFUL THAN SERENA????? It just isn't true. And Martina is 11 not ten, but I will include her anyways.

Power:
1. Serena
2. Venus
3. Lindsay
4. Jennifer
5. Monica
6. Kim
7. Jelena
8. Justine
9. Amelie
10. Martina

Speed
1. Serena
2. Venus
3. Kim
4. Jennifer (Very Underrated in this department)
5. Justine
6. Martina
7. Amelie
8. Lindsay
9. Jelena
10. Monica

Mental
1. Monica Seles (no comparision)
2. Venus Williams (stone faced)
3. Jennifer Capriati (Miss Tenatious, except right now:o )
4. Jelena Dokic (I have to give credit where it is due)
5. Serena Williams (Great improvement, but still not perfect)
6. Martina Hingis (She choked for the first time this year at Oz)
7. Kim Clijsters (The intensity level just isn't there IMHO)
8. Lindsay Davenport (can be great, but is often too hard on herself)
9. Amelie Mauresmo- Used to be by far the worst, but improvements have been made.
10 Justine Henin- A pure basket case. I am not even going to list all of her choking abilities cause I don't have time. And yet she doesn't think anything is wrong with blowing a 6-2; 4-0 lead so she doesn't get help.

Versatility
1. Martina Hingis- untouchable
2. Justine Henin- a magician with the racket
3. Amelie Mauresmo- ditto
4TIE- Serena Williams- great angles, swinging volleys, overheads, and serve variety
4TIE- Kim Clijsters- ditto
6. Lindsay Davenport- Great angles, superb hands
7. Monica- the world's best angles I think
8TIE- Jennifer Capriati- No real variety
8TIE- Venus Williams- ditto
10. Jelena Dokic- at least the previous two can get a volley over the net and in the court!:p

Accuracy-
1. Martina Hingis
2. Lindsay Davenport
3. Monica Seles
4. Jennifer Capriati
5. Serena Williams (huge HUGE improvement)
6. Jelena Dokic
7TIE- Kim, Amelie- go through clean streaks and error fest streaks
9. Justine Henin- is very consistent on clay, and fairly so on grass, but is horrible indoors and on hard courts
10. Venus Williams- the forehand breaks down too often

Match Consistency- What does this mean??????

Intelligence:
1. Venus Williams- extremely smart. Funny too.
2. Martina Hingis- fiendishly clever
3. Monica Seles- strikes me as a very deep thinker, but somewhat naieve
4. Lindsay Davenport- Very intelligent, great leader.
5. Serena Williams- very smart, though not as much as venus. A very hard worker
6. Kim Clijsters- not smart, not dumb
7. Justine Henin- ditto, but too passive for my liking
8. Jelena Dokic- stereotypical blonde, and a puppet of her father
10. Jennifer Capriati- I love the girl, but I am sorry: she is a complete airhead. Her IQ is probably less than 100. She gives the worst interviews of any athlete, and has no understanding of the world outside tennis admittantly.

NOTE: I have never heard anything Amelie has said that would give me insight into her intelligence.

Nice, but in too many categories there are few palyers who really have "some of that"
I'll list only top three.

Hey, where's "ability"???
Nobody cares anymore about it?
:)

Power
-----
1. S.Williams
2. Davenport
3. Capriati

Speed
-----
1. V.Williams
2. S.Williams

Mental
-----
1. Capriati

Versatility
-------

No player today really has got it.
Hingis "might", but she's too weak at serve to be "versatile"

Intelligence
---------
1. Capriati
2. Seles
3. Hingis

Consistentcy (groundstrokes)
------------
1. Hingis
2. Capriati
3. Davenport

Match Consistentcy

match consistentcy as in they win when they should win

Venus hits the ball harder than serena does and has a bigger serve, but Serena hits with more pace and her serve is more reliable. If they had an arm wrestle match though, Serena would win.

I'm not biased towards Monica, she is heads above heals (ask anyone) stronger mentally than anyone out there. Shes a very smart player (ask Chrisse Evert) which is why she most always does better in the second set after figuring out what works and what doesnt, she most always smacks the lines and she rarely loses to player ranked beneath her (like in 2000 she didnt lose to ANYONE outside of the top 4)

way

With Jennifer?
I don't like her that much!
I'm biased towards "good" players, Jennifer is simply "better" (imho) than most of the tops, even if she's not always "stronger".
That's all.

Excluding their serves, the Williams sisters don't hit it as hard as most of the top 10.

Lindsay
Monica
Jelena
Kim

hit it harder, and a good case for Daniela, Jen, and Mauresmo could be made.

Anyway, this topic is nice, but time-consuming. I'll try again later.

If your point is they use more topspin than the others then I agree. But Serena can hit that forehand crosscourt like no one ever.

Daniela hits harder than Jelena and I believe Kim. Jennifer's forehand is the best, hardest ever, so basically you are wrong. Venus' forehand isn't so hard, but still harder than everyone but Serena, Lindsay, and Jennifer. Serena hits her forehand as hard as Jennifer, which is as hard as anyone in history. They do hit with more topspin, but don't let your petty biases effect your choices. I don't.

Lindsay and Monica surely hit it harder than the Williamses. Jelena certainly hit it harder than Venus in their last match, and Kim didn't exactly poof the ball in her last few matches against them. Stroke for stroke many girls hit it harder than Serena and especially Venus, but not nearly as good at serving.

Anyway, here are my picks. (I'm also changing categories because some categories are unfairly weighted.) I'm eliminating Hantuchova from the top 10 just...because.

Power, Speed, Mental, Versatility, Intelligence, Consistentcy (groundstrokes), Match Consistentcy

Power
1) Lindsay Davenport
2) Monica Seles
3) Serena Williams
4) Jelena Dokic
5) Kim Clijsters
6) Venus Williams
7) Jennifer Capriati
8) Amelie Mauresmo
9) Justine Henin
10) Martina Hingis

Wow, Capriati #7? Venus #6? When you stop to think about it, and ignore the silly "most powerful" propoganda the WTA feeds you, it makes sense. Although...the first 7 are basically interchangable. Make that the first 8...and Henin can hit it as hard as anyone playing on clay.

Speed
1) Serena Williams
2) Kim Clijsters
3) Venus Williams
4) Jennifer Capriati
5) Justine Henin
6) Martina Hingis (before injury, as is everything I list here for her)
7) Amelie Mauresmo
8) Jelena Dokic
9) Monica Seles
10) Lindsay Davenprot

Forehand
1) Serena Williams
2) Jennifer Capriati
3) Lindsay Davenport

(Those three are interchangable. HUGE gap here)

4) Kim Clijsters
5) Jelena Dokic
6) Monica Seles
7) Justine Henin
8) Venus Williams
9) Martina Hingis
10) Amelie Mauresmo

Backhand
1) Martina Hingis
2) Lindsay Davenport
3) Venus Williams
4) Justine Henin
5) Monica Seles
6) Amelie Mauresmo
7) Jennifer Capriati
8) Serena Williams
9) Jelena Dokic
10) Kim Clijsters

WOW. Serena, Jelena, Kim, Jen, Amelie?! To say their backhands are in the lower half is unbelievable, but when you think about it, every top 10 player has an excellent backhand, so the competition is stiff.

Serve
1) Serena Williams
2) Venus Williams
3) Lindsay Davenport
4) Amelie Mauresmo
5) Kim Clijsters
6) Jennifer Capriati
7) Monica Seles
8) Justine Henin
9) Jelena Dokic
10) Martina Hingis

The difference between the first five and last five is enormous.

Variety
1) Martina Hingis
2) Justine Henin
3) Kim Clijsters
4) Amelie Mauresmo
5) Jennifer Capriati
6) Serena Williams
7) Lindsay Davenport
8) Venus Williams
9) Jelena Dokic
10) Monica Seles

An overall pathetic list. Capriati #5 makes me cringe, but alas, that's what Minotaurian physique gets most of these girls.

Volleys
1) Martina Hingis
2) Amelie Mauresmo
3) Justine Henin
4) Lindsay Davenport
5) Kim Clijsters
6) Jennifer Capriati
7) Serena Williams
8) Monica Seles
9) Venus Williams
10) Jelena Dokic

Consistence (Groundstrokes, that is)
1) Martina Hingis
2) Justine Henin (Wow, this is someone who makes so many errors. This list already represents why the tour is criticised.)
3) Jennifer Capriati
4) Lindsay Davenport
5) Venus Williams
6) Amelie Mauresmo
7) Monica Seles
8) Serena Williams
9) Jelena Dokic
10) Kim Clijsters

Venus, Lindsay, Jen, above average consistence. Doesn't anyone else see something wrong here???

Mental Toughness
1) Monica Seles
2) Venus Williams
3) Kim Clijsters
4) Jelena Dokic
5) Serena Williams
6) Lindsay Davenport
7) Jennifer Capriati
8) Amelie Mauresmo
9) Justine Henin
10) Martina Hingis. Used to be #1, but starting with Graf, following with many famous chokes. Venus USO 2000 is the biggie. I don't need to mention Myskina, CAPRIATI, Clijsters, Seles matches this year.

I don't feel like averaging. Maybe later.

Comparative stats like these are a lot of nonsense. Taking an 'average' of these figures even more.
In science this kind of study is immediately classified as a 'faulty analogy'

***TALENTS AND WHY***
1. Serena Williams ( She's the most powerful and very quick, she may not be positive but when have power like that and you can control it and back it up with those legs, ur good)

2. Venus Williams ( Almost better than her sister, but her sister has more control, Venus is as good but those errors creep)

3. Kim Clijsters ( The reason she is up so high is because if you compare her, she should be, incredible finess, power off both sides, very quick and very very mentlly strong )

4. Jennifer Capriati ( VERY fast, runs down everything, and never gives up and thats what gets her through, shes powerful, gets everything so what else is she missing, a better serve and more consistency would help)

5. Jelena Dokic(so high because lets face it, her powerful shots and attitude got her here, her movement and serve arent very good, but she believes in herself, and overpowers basically everyone, that serve and better shape, and more consitency on her matches, she'd be a top top player, her backhand and forehand are good, but keywords, power and belief)

6. Lindsay Davenport ( Her and Dokic were very identical but Dokic went higher because Dokic has a way better attitude, a litle bit more consistency, Davenport is all power and thats not all you need, Davenports is slow around the court, no versatility, and she is always down on herself and just gives up, shes been losing in the finals very often, a better attitude and speed would REALLY help her, she could be number one again)

7. Amelie Mauresmo ( She should be ranked very very high, but I just think that she has a problem with the mental game. The pressure gets to her wayyy to easily. Her power and game are beautfil, but a little bit more speed and attitude, she'd be number one as well.)

8. Justine Henin ( Her backhand made the big deal for her, she played very very well until suddenly the "consistency" died out, losing in early rounds, mistakes, not thinking right, she has a nice game with very nice strokes, but the consistency went away)

9. Martina Hingis ( We all know why ... The power game just passed her, yes she can prove power isnt everything, but her game just died out especially after that lay - off, the power rose and Hingis has nothing really left but her volley game, she gets overpowered from the first point, she can barely hit winners, and you see her losing to players in the top twenty all the time, her serve has no power and her shot dont either, but in time she'll come back because shes just a genius who can mix it up, but right now with the game so intense, it'll take a while)

10. Monica Seles ( I think Power is the only thing she is good for no offense, she is very slow, she always has been, she can't really chase down these hard balls like a Clijsters or when Capriati runs as fast as she can, Seles just has no stamina and no speed, plus that 2 handed grip, in order for Seles to win she needs to dictate all the time, but with the level of the game more women are dictating play and making Seles move , soemthing she cant do well, Schwartz almost ousted Seles, Seles is powerful, but the movement is the biggest factor)

Intelligence. How are you all defining that?
10. Jennifer Capriati- I love the girl, but I am sorry: she is a complete airhead. Her IQ is probably less than 100. She gives the worst interviews of any athlete, and has no understanding of the world outside tennis admittantly.
Does this matter on court? Or are we talking about on-court shot intelligence ... because she's more intelligent at that, but not in the real world. But then who rate tennis players abilities on their real life intelligence? On that basis Steven Hawkings would be world number 1

Well said, Veryborednow!

And, fwiw, "knowing nothing of the world outside admittantly" rings a bell, to me, much more than saying "i know all".
It's a little bit like those who think they're always right or sare afraid to admit they can be wrong.
Have you ever found a clever person among them?

sarista, Serena has more versatility than Martina? Yes, those lovely Serena slices, the formidable Serena volleys, and the delicate Serena dropshots. And to say the person with the highest W/UE ratio in the history of the game has the second most consistent groundstrokes confirms my worst fears.

sartrista7
Oct 15th, 2002, 06:19 PM
oooo - I'm ranking them as to how they are playing now. Martina has potentially got the most versatility of anyone on tour, but I haven't seen her use it for at least a year. Until and unless she's prepared to use spins and angles and changes of pace in an aggressive fashion against the big babes, I'm not going to rank her top in versatility. As for Serena, unfortunately she does have versatility. Obviously her game is power-based, and that's why her perfect drop-shot winners and angles etc. hurt so much.

And she's not playing with that W/UE ratio at the moment.

(Incidentally, I don't even like Serena and would support Martina if they were to play tomorrow.)

I've also worked out what's wrong with these categories: they don't take into account potential to improve in any of these areas. For example, both Justine and Amelie have the potential to improve in every one of those categories many times over, whilst Lindsay and Kim don't.

(For what it's worth, I think Justine, Amelie, Serena and Martina are the most naturally talented players in the list according to my definition of 'natural talent'.)
