By now, some of you have noticed that I'm always hunting for new and more informative ways of comparing players. I got to thinking that it would be nice to have an easy visual way to compare how players were doing. Which led to 'Relative Finish'.

Different tournaments are worth different amonts, so what's better, a TIer semi or a TIer IV win? Here's a first crude attempt at comparative worth. Simply put, at each level, every round of a tournament is worth one more. So a Tier I final is worth the same as a GS semi. Or winning a TIer V is about the same as making the roud-of-32 in a GS.
Crude? Yes. Perfect? No.

To measure periods of time, we track finishes by week-of-the-year. Stanford is week 30, Bahia, week 37, etc.

Now for a test case. We'll compare Mauresmo, Clijsters and Hantuchova since Wimbledon. Given that these three players are part of a group of 8-10 players of very similar ability, it's no surprise the results are pretty even.

AM - Mauresmo
KC - Clijsters
DH - Hantuchova

Amelie had the best summer, but is tailing off now.
Kim was very inconsistent, but seems to be finally rounding into form.
Dani has actually been delivering top ten results since Montreal.

You can also measure players against perfection.

-- One step above winning the tournament
VW Venus Willaims

Venus had a near-perfect summer, but so far losing the US Open has had a negative effect.
