From Steveg

During the opening ceremony, the stadium is completely full!!! This was really amazing!!! The match started slowly, both players being intimated to be the first match after the opening ceremony. Mazur seem paralysed and was quickly trailing 0-3 (having been broken once). Kedriouk was faster in the match, with an excellent serve (3 winners in the first game and 2 aces in the second one).

Kedriouk broke one more time later in the set to lead 5-1. Then some spectators started to leave the stadium, which seemed to affect more Kedriouk who lost his serve. After Mazur won his serve, Kedriouk concluded 6-3 [N.B. : I just realised I posted a wrong score but could not amend it as I can't access WTAworld at the moment).

In the second set, Mazur was the first one to break in the 4th game to take the lead 3-1 (aking advantage of Kedriouk difficulties to hit first serves + one double fault). But Kedriouk broke back immediately by changing of tactics : he started to hit with more topspin, keeping the ball long and in play and being more patient before trying a winner with his forehand.

I must admit that at 3-3, I followed a bit less because I just noticed that Iroda little sister was sitting very close to me and I took the opportunity to take a few photos of her ;) .

At 4-4. Kedriouk broke one last time Mazur serve and concluded the match aggressively by going more often to the net.

Hello Boodie,

Thanks for posting the mixed doubles draw. Since there is no stake in this mixed doubles tourney, and that the present internet connection is extremely slow, I won't be posting draws or results :) .

I did not take many notes today as I spent lot of time taking photos (around 80  ).

LIU Jin-Jin vs. ARUTYUNOVA Elina
The match started very badly for Jin Jin who was extremely tense. She was on the defensive and holding back her shots :( . This lasted however only a couple of games. She was helped by the lack of experience of Elina who did not take advantage of the short balls played by Jing Jing and committed some enormous errors trying to finish off the points.

Jing Jing then came back to herself and was more aggressive, going to the net on several occasions.

SANTOS Anna-Patricia vs. MAMUTOVA Velena
This match was won by the players who committed the least number of unforced errors. Velena has a good forehand but needs to work mostly her serve (her feet are moving too much, in particular the left foot).

I felt Velena could have played better but she seemed to be under some pressure.

KIM Dong-Hyun vs. YAKHYAEV Mansur
This was a real tennis lesson by Dong-Hyun. He moved his opponent everywhere, going to the net on short balls...

Dong-Hyun was obviously extremely confident during this match but made his opponent play points. Though it was extremely obvious, I found it kind of him not to finish off the match like Yeu-Tzuoo did.

WANG Yeu-Tzuoo vs. SHAHGHOLI Anoosha (IRI)
I wanted to watch a bit of this match but it finished in no time at all and I could see nothing at all :eek : .

SUN Peng vs. VICTORINO Joseph
The points were tight, but Joseph serve let him down during the whole match. Too low percentage of first serve and too many double faults. He had an errative toss (tossing often too much in front) and was not pushing upwards with his legs (falling on the ball).
Peng serve was extremely efficient in the match + Peng served and volleyed very well.

I watched a bit of some matches but spent some time chatting too :o .

CHOI Y-J (KOR) d. RYABTSEVA E. (UZB) 62 64
I watched this match as I needed to prepare my stuffs for the next one on same court  .

Young-Ja started slowly. It was obvious that she was lacking practice on these courts (she had just arrived...). She started to serve and both players won their respective games easily.

In the 3rd game Young-Ja saved a break-point against her. She was lucky that Elena broke her strings at deuce (and lost the point).

Elena lost her 4th game with several unforced errors + one double fault. Young-Ja increased then the rythme and won her game easily to lead now 4-1.

Young-ja had then some problems with her return of serve (two unforced errors!) : 4-2. She then went on to win the next two games and finished the set on a winning return :) .

It was then Elena's turn to have problems with her returns of serve (3 unforced errors  ). Both players went on to win their next respective games (2-1 for Young-Ja) with Elena taking the advantage in a couple of long exchanges.

But she could not keep her consistency and lost her set (3-1 for Young-Ja). At 4-2, Young-Ja lost her serve with 4 unforced errors  . Elena therefore came back to 4-3. She went on to serve and hit two good aces + took advantage of two unforced errors of Young-Ja on the returns of serve.

Young-Ja however concluded the match strongly by winning her game without any unforced error and mostly taking Elena last game at 0-40.

MORIGOMI Akiko (JPN) d. LIU Jing-Jing (CHN) 64 75
Jin- Jing won the toss and chose to serve. Both players won their respective serves (1-1) but Jing-Jing lost her second and third ones (4-1 Akiko). Akiko was returning extremely well, in particular on Jing-Jing second serve (Jing-Jing topspin did not affect her at all).

Jing-Jing reacted then and won Akiko serve at 0-40 + won her game after (4-3 Akiko). At this point of the game, Jing Jing had improved the quality of her play, clearing the net higher and hitting longer. She continued by taking Akiko's game again with 2 winning returns (4-4).

Jing-Jing could however not maintain the same level of play and lost her game. Akiko went on to win her game and the set 64.

Akiko continued strongly in the second set, taking immediately Jing Jing's game with 3 winners (2 backhands and one forehand).

At 2-1 for Akiko, Jing Jing broke back to equalise 2-2.

This is when things started to go bad for Akiko  . On three occasions during the game, Akiko complained about bad calls, including an umpire over-rule (very bad call from the umpire I think. I'll check the video : I taped the whole match ;) ).

Both players won their games twice : 4-4.

Then both players lost their games twice  . Akiko finished her serve with a double fault , giving the opportunity once again to Jing-Jing to come back in the match.

Then Akiko changed gear and accelerated her play, breaking Jing-Jing and winning her last game at 40-0.

There certainly have been some bad calls during the match and Akiko may have been affected. But Jing-Jing played very well too and managed to come back from difficult situations. She was unfortunately playing well only when back against the wall. There is besides a difference of experience between the two players (this year Akiko played already some 25 tourneys while Jing Jing has played only 9  ).

Anyway, Akiko played well and her experience paid off. She had good shots and hitting with two hands both sides, it is often difficult to anticipate where the ball will go. If only she could swear more softly : the spectators would not hear :o .

These are the two matches I followed entirely today. I watched a bit of everything after ;) .

A few comments about the other matches I have seen :

Ogodorov vs. Kedriouk
Kedriouk was very impressive in this match : good returns of serve, good serves, good forehand, quickness. Ogodorov complained about everything (ball boys, the crowd...) . I managed to take the 2nd set but could not maintain the same level all the time.

Handoyo vs. Si
It was a battle of serves. As long as Yew Ming had a high % of 1st serves, things were OK for him. When it dropped, Peter took the advantage. Yew-Ming looked young to me and uncertain. He could certainly do better because he is talented.

Inoyatov vs. Suwandi
Murad started very strongly and deserved to win the 1st set. He was however often losing patience in the match and his coach (his dad?) had to remind him often to keep cool. I think he was leading 3-1 in the 2nd set when he got upset about a line call. Murad has a strong serve and a lethal forehand. He went often to the net to finish off the points. Maybe with more experience, he'll cool down.

Wang (TPE) / Hsieh (TPE) vs. Kim (KOR) / Shchupak (UZB)
I mention this match because it was real fun to watch. The 4 players had some great time on court :D . Su-Wei was all smiles and laughs. It was more of an exhibition :) . Su-Wei / Yeu-Tsuoo eventually won 6-2 7-6 (2).

I watched entirely the match between Hsieh and Mirza (but have been talking with someone at the same time A LOT :o ).

Su Wei started to serve and hold. She then went on to break Sania immediately. However, Sania reacted and broke back. In spite of two direct errors in return on serve, Su-Wei broke once again Sania to take the lead 3-1.

And once again, Sania broke back (Su-Wei did a doubles fault at 15-40  ) : 3-2 for Su-Wei. And guess what? Su-Wei broke Sania's serve again  , thanks partly to a low % of 1st serves from Sania + one double fault.

Sania breaks once again to come back to 4-3 for Su Wei and wins her serve (as a change) right after, thanks partly to an improvement in her 1st serve %.

Su-Wei wins her game and improves the quality of her games (deeper balls) when her coach arrives...

Sania breaks immediately at the beginning of the 2nd set and wins her game right after to take a 2-0 lead. Both players hold serve until 4-3 for Sania and serve to follow. From that point on, Su Wei plays better and better, to finish strongly the match.

N.B. :
- Sania had an important number of return winners on Su-Wei second balls

- Su-Wei had a problem with the chair empire who asked her to cover her SANEX WTA logo (same logo that ALL WTA players have to wear  ). She put some sticker that fell during the match (on Su-Wei serve at 3-1 for Sania). The empire ordered Su-Wei to put another white sticker immediately to cover the logo. She went to her chair, took a sticker and put it on the logo, then went back to serve. All this in a perfectly normal way. She got a TIME VIOLATION warning from this empire :fiery: . Should I mention it is exactly the same empire with whom Akiko had had some "discussion" during her match against Jing-Jing  . Akiko had the same logo during her match against Liza but the empire (a professional one) said nothing about it.
I asked the tournament supervisor about this problem : "No official comment available. The logo can be hidden or not : no problem." I wonder then why Su-Wei was ordered to cover it  and received a time violation.

- Liza played a good match all in all, seizing all opportunities on Su-Wei short balls to finish off the point. The score was tight because Su-Wei did not play at her maximum potential (compared to what I had seen last year in Pathaya). As an exemple : she was standing on the baseline to receive Liza 1st and 2nd serves. In Pattaya, she was well within the court to receive ANY player 2nd serve (incl. during her QF match Neffa-de los Rios). Today, she stepped inside (around 50 - 70 cm) only on Liza's last 2nd serve (on match point) and concluded with...a straight winner. She could have done that much much earlier.

- This certainly explains why Su-Wei was talking to herself during the match, being unsatisfied with her performance on court. I hope she'll find soon the motivation again to play her best tennis :) .

I am looking forward the match between Lu and Bopanna. I wonder how Yen-Hsun will handle Rohan serve.

Rohan has had solid matches so far : strong serve and good volleys. But Yen Hsun has a good touch and is quick...

It will be tough for Yan-Ze : she was nervous today, whilst Ivanna wants to win badly. She has shown great will in her past match.

Luckily, it will be possible to follow all matches at the same time (adjacent courts) ;) .

Bopanna started well the 1st set, winning is serve, breaking Motomura's and win his again to take a 3-0 lead.

But Motomura has always been a slow starter in his past matches. And Bopanna had an extremely low percentage of first serves.

Motomura went on to win his serve and break Bopanna next game (3-2 Bopanna), thanks in particular to 2 doubles faults. Bopanna tried to go to the net but Motomura was extremely precise in his passing shots.

At 3-3, Motomura broke again Bopanna's serve (who had one double fault again). It was however Motomura turn to tense up during his next game of serve and do 2 double faults, which help Bopanna to break back to 4-4.

In his next game, Bopanna had one more double fault. At 30-40 in the game, Bopanna hit a good first serve on Motomura backhand who managed an excellent return, took the lead in the point and finished with a winning forehand.

Serving for the set and leading 40-15, Motomura hit a double fault, helping Bopanna to come back in the game. However, at deuce, Bopanna had an unforced error on his back hand. On the next point, Motomura hit a good first serve that Bopanna returned long : 1st Motomura 64.

In the second set, both players started to win their respective serves. Bopanna tried to overpower his opponent but Motomura was controling the balls well, hitting back with a firm wrist. I could really see the difference of experience between Motomura and Lu to handle Bopanna hard balls (some forehands and first serves).

In the 3rd game of the 2nd set, Bopanna had again 2 doubles faults, which assisted again Motomura to break and take the lead 15-40. Bopanna had then a good first serve but Motomura had an even better return of serve that Bopanna sent back to the net : 2-1 Motomura.

In the next game, Motomura started with an ace. Then Bopanna had 3 unforced errors (including one trying to hit a winning forehand) : 3-1 Motomura.

In the fifth game, Motomura was upset with a linesman decision on Rohan's first serve (I could not see the ball that was way to fast and I was not at the best position to judge anyway). Rohan won his serve at 40-0 : 3-2 Goichi.

Goichi had not problem winning his next game however, after cooling down during the change of sides.

On his next serve, Bopanna decided to slow down eventually his first serve to increase the % of balls in, which was successful : 4-3 Motomura.

Goichi started to tense up as he was coming closer to winning the match. He started with a double fault and was quickly down 15-40. He managed however to regain control of his nerves, hitting a good first serve to come back 30-40 and had a winning inside out forehand in the next point : deuce. On the next point, Rohand returned too short and Goichi hit another winning inside out forehand. At ad, Goichi had a good serve that Rohan could not control (mis hit) and the return went wide : 5-3 Goichi.

From that moment on, Goichi was really to close down the match. On match point, Rohan went to net and hit the volley too long.

It was a good match from both players but the difference of experience could be felt. Goichi was controling well Rohan attempts to finish points quickly and keeping the ball in play, waiting for opportunities.

Rohan serve let him down during the whole match and his % of double faults was high.

Goichi was extremely happy to have won this WC to Oz Open Main Draw (I think he lost in Q1 last year  ).

I will be posting photos on Tuesday when I am back home :) .
