View Full Version : How many WILLIAMS - WILLIAMS Grand Slam finals in 2003?

TeeRexx

I thought that the three WILLIAMS-WILLIAMS Grand Slam finals in 2003 would be the most that this great duo could ever perform, but with the apparent decimation of the current top ten I am almost tempted to say that VENUS & SERENA could duplicate that feat once more or even make it a clean sweep in 2003.

However, I think that it would be a much better prediction to say that there will be two all WILLIAMS finals in 2003, but there is still a good possibility that all of the Grand Slam singles titles will be swept by the WILLIAMS unless one or two players can really step up to the plate and play some great tennis in one or more of the slams.

Go WILLIAMS!

Barring injury at least two.

1. Australian Open - history tells me probably not. But Serena has her eyes on that prize. Venus is going to get pit bull mean, so I would not rule it out.

2. French Open - It might be tough for both Sisters to again reign on the clay. Possible though and I definitely would not bet the house against it.

3. Wimbledon - Count this one! Serena played at the highest level ever witnessed this year. Venus never loses on grass (except to baby sis). The W in Wimby stands for Williams.

4. U.S. Open - A Williams has owned the crown since 1999. No one other than a Williams has seen the finals since 2000. Chalk it up for next year as well. :p

So you see definitely two. Even if they both donot make the finals of the other two. I agree with Jarrett at least one Williams will make it.

Tsequoia - A great post and I agree with your assessment and analyst completely.
VENUS & SERENA are trying to make Wimbledon and the U.S. Open titles a Williams family heirloom. Even more so, the other players are beginning to concede these titles to the WILLIAMS before they even play in them

I expected a WILLIAMS to win the OZ title before the Roland Garros, but I was surprised with their ability just as the other players and most fans were when they both appeared in the Paris final.

Yes, I would like four VENUS & SERENA GS finals next year, but I will gladly enjoy two all WILLIAMS GS finals appearances. :)

I say sure locks for Wimbly and US Open!!!

but possibly French again:eek:

No doubt at least two and maybe 3.:) I HOPE ALL FOUR!!!!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :)

I do think that one of them if not both will make it to the finals in all four of the 2003 Slams!:D

Further thought about it, I have to be honest and sy at least three. Venus will be hungey for Aussie Open, I dun think Serena will drop her level

Wimbly and US are them deadlock, coz the court surface is too fast.

I can see Kim or Justine or Amelie or Monica (fingers crossed) ruins the Williams party in French open though

Hmm I'd agree that Wimbledon and the UsOpen are an all-Williams affair. For some reason I just dont think they will repeat at OZ, or the French for that matter.

So I'd say atleast 2

Volcana

Two.

Sophie
Oct 12th, 2002, 11:01 PM
Two. Don't forget, they have to stay on the opposite sides of the draw and make it to the final. I can see Venus falling to #3 at some point.

TeeRexx
Oct 12th, 2002, 11:06 PM
The general concensus seems to be two all WILLIAMS GS finals at this time.

VENUS may not be able to beat baby sis, but she should handle the rest of the bunch. VENUS will not drop below #2 in 2003.

CJ07
Oct 12th, 2002, 11:20 PM
oh Venus can and will beat Serena
The thing that always determine their matches is who makes fewer errors. at the open, rena only made 19 errors and one double fault, while venus made 33 errors and 10 double faults. You cant win if you give away 43 points, and because of that Venus gave Serena nearly a set worth of Errors alone

Jovon
Oct 12th, 2002, 11:26 PM
Tee, I also seriously doubt Venus will drop below number two in 2003! You are right, she can handle the other players and I think Venus will have something suprising for Serena next year!;)

I don't know how many sister slams finals are there going to be, because injury is bound to happen unfortunately to one of them in a slam in a span of a year('02 Serena AO) ('00 FO Serena) ('00 Venus AO)(etc...)
ALL I KNOW IS THAT:
It's going to be an all WILLIAMS SWEEP OF ALL MAJORS IN 2003!!!!!! This year was magnificent for the sisters, Venus 7 tournies, Serena 8 tournies & three slams, etc...
I do think that Venus' year has been magnificant, no she has not won a major, but she has been there always and when she was down in the past not winning majors, etc...SHE ALWAYS managed to get back on track, 2003 is the year for her. That is just MINE opinion of Venus' year being magnificant, everybod yis entitled to theirs. BUT what I am 100% sure is that the rest of the Wta Tour will have a VERY tough time dealing with these two next year!!

BRING IT ON!

It depends on how well everyone else competes against them, if they can step up enough.

the french open will be the most difficult to win. Henin is a threat.
but i am quit sure about Wimbledon and US open.

There will still be a Williams-Williams US Open final, but the other three will be
Aus. Open: 1 Williams (could be either depending on the draw) vs Kim
French: Havn't decided yet
Wimbledon: 1 Williams vs. Justine

I think that there will be at least two Williams-Williams Slam Finals.
However, I think that 2003 Slams will all be won by someone with the last name WILLIAMS!

I think the US Open is the only "safe" bet.

The Aussie has always been trouble some for the sisters. I don't see an all-sister final in 2003.

Roland Garros is always so wide open, and it always has the most upsets [remember the 2001 women's draw]? It would be amazing for the sisters to repeat.

Serena hadn't done too well on grass before this year, making a semi before. This is the next best bet after the Open though. Mauresmo, Lindsay, Chanda and Justine have proved to be great on grass, and possible stops to Williams/Williams finals

tough to tell with venus's mental state right now. if she even decides to play tennis she'll either continue her dominance with serena or fall back to the level of players like dokic.

since i felt that she didn't want to put everything into her tennis this year in a few matches i'm gonna say:

AO capritai (def. serena in semi's) def. seles (def. venus in the semi's)
FO serena def. clijsters (def. venus in the semi's)
Wimby serena (with her new volley's) def. venus
US Open venus (decides she really wants to play tennis) def. serena

I would agree with that, except US Open, Wimbledon changed. I think Venus will regain her Wimbledon title. I think she is the better grass courter.

Cap over Serena...wow, that would be the biggest win for Capriati since beating Hingis in Aussie Land this year ;)

Serena would definetely let Venus eat the grass once more if they would ever meet at the Wimby finals 2003.:o

I will boldly say all four. Serena prevailing at the AO, and Venus for the next three. Why is everyone thinking that the sisters meeting at this year's FO final is some kind of fluke. They are getting better on all type of surfaces. The AO is now the final frontier.

Bright Red
Oct 13th, 2002, 03:25 PM
The French is the only question mark in my mind. But I'd bet at least one of them will be in the final of it. (I really want Venus to win that one).

And even though neither has seen the AO final, I fully expect an All-Williams final in the land down under.

But to answer your question. I say 3.5 of the Grand Slams in '03.

TeeRexx
Oct 13th, 2002, 05:13 PM
The number of Sister Slams that can occur really seems to depend on VENUS at this time.
SERENA seems more than capable of being in all 4 of the GS finals so far.

Come on VENUS!

Well at the french, the sisters had a very easy draw

Venus beat an error prone Monica Seles, and then Clarisa Fernandez

Serena beat an injured Mary Pierce and won a match that Jcap should have won

The majority of fans still seem to think that they will be priviliged to see about two WILLIAMS-WILLIAMS GS finals in 2003.

I still agree.

I couldn't agree more. and with the same result.;) Venus would stay slamless for 2003 with this scenario.

Need I say more than simply four? And each sister will win two grand slams next year. It's only right to be equitable! Right?

BasicTennis
Oct 14th, 2002, 11:57 AM
Serena won't allow that. She wants to defend all her titles successfully and she wanted to be the first player ever to have defended all GS titles successfully. 2004 would be Venus chance in case Serena gives her a little mercy.;)

For great player like Serena, being 2nd is being last.

I'd like it to be 4, but realistically I think at least two or maybe three, if they both stay healthy.

PhoenixStorm
Oct 14th, 2002, 03:22 PM
I'd settle for two out of four as long as there is a williams in the other two finals.

There was never a williams in the french final before 2002 so i fully expect a williams in the ao final and dusting capriati.

all this weak draw crap is just that crap. The draw is what it is and if you can't make it through the its your own fault. Also tennis is a MENTAL game so if j cap couldnt find the mental fortitude to win then its the same as if she was dusted off the court out right, because the end result is the same: she lost. Go see Momo's head shrink jenny maybe he can help.

If the rest of the top ten continue to be less than dominant amongst one another, then the WILLIAMS may just have to play each other in all four of the GS finals. :)

Oct 14th, 2002, 10:50 PM
Well, I reckon all the seeds will be so worried about stopping yet another all Williams final, they will start "getting tight", "chocking" , "getting injured", "Fatigued" "tired"....etc. while the sisters get in their grooves and demolish everyone all the way to the final.... so I'm very confident we will have 4 WS slam finals. May I just say Congrats to Venus on her Grand slam win.....

God, I'm looking forward to 2003 ;)

with their recorda at the Oz open i find it hard to see an all-williams final there in 2003 but you never no. i think venus might find it tough on the clay at roland garros as well. i think these two slams are where the sisters are more vulnerable but i find it hard to see anyone eles but them in the finals at wimby and the us open. especially at the us i think they want to keep the final a family affair for as long as possible due to the fact that they've both been there the last two years and will want to keep it that way in 2003

The only surface anyone has a chance on will be clay. There are so many great clay courters and the dirt does slow things down a tad. If anything the dirt neturalizes somewhat the foot speed, balance, and change of direction for venus and serena.

However its not like they haven't won tournaments on the clay and since the first week is usually a cake walk they probably will only need to string together three solid wins: fourth quarters and semis.
