I saw her at Wimbledon.

Do you think you could share a little more about her? From a few pictures I've seen of her, she looks fairly tall. Is that right? What's her game like? Is she someone who's going to be in the top 200-100 someday? Does she need a couple years to mature? All I know about Alison is that she just got a WTA ranking this summer and had a couple nice runs at 10Ks, but I suppose a lot of players could do that. Do you think she's capable of more?

I also saw her at Wimbledon and I really liked her. She is very much a finesse type player and she was hitting some very imaginative shots so, without knowing anything about her I stopped and watched her for about half an hour. Her very red hair also makes her very striking. She could almost be Dick Norman's daughter . She was actually the only girl I saw this year in juniors who made any impression on me. I would definately be pleased to see her have a successful career, but obviously it is still very early days to start thinking in those terms. Let's see how she gets on over the next 12 months. :)

Read about the win down in the Algarve on a free local tennis mag, Googled and found about the win streak.

Was going to ask about game style and then found

I also saw her at Wimbledon and I really liked her. She is very much a finesse type player and she was hitting some very imaginative shots so, without knowing anything about her I stopped and watched her for about half an hour.

That's not very encouraging. I mean, we desperately need good new players regardless of game style, but players with those traits tend to do well in juniors and at the lower tier challenger level and often struggle at the WTA level. Players with simpler, generic but solid baseline games (such as Jovanovski) are likelier to find it easier to achieve consistent (even if not necessarily brilliant) results at the WTA level.

Ginger powah to her, though.

Since the last year I follow Alison regularly and I was already time to go see her during the ITF tournament in Torhout last year and I must say she really played well for her age (16y). And this year she won five tournaments, she has not lost any match this year! Bright future awaits her, but she has to keep working hard and have patience. :)

I hope she can qualify for the main draw, if she could get the qualifierspot against Chanelle Scheepers, she could cause some damage. After all she has beaten a top 100 player before(Zahlavova at Tessenderlo). TBE's ranking projection thread has Alison moving into the top 400 at 376!
Also I believe her Edinburgh $10k points haven't been added yet (go on next week).

So Alison has already achieved her ranking goal for the year & it isn't even half way through the year yet :) she also passes Hendler & Mestach in the Belgian ranking list.

time for a new goal!

Although she is likely to focus on juniors over the next month with 2 GSs she has the Belgian summer of $10 & $25k events to do some damage in.

This girl has serious game. Really lovely serve, quite a big fh, passable bh, decent movement. Haven't seen the volleys yet, but she seems to have touch. I'd say she's a future top 20 player, although it is a bit early to be sure. I'd be quite surprised if she didn't break the top 100 within the next two years.

She doesn't seem to be mentally ready at this stage to handle the intensity when Yanina really brought it towards the end of the set, but Belgian tennis seems to be in very good shape.

I think its a possibility, for example a few years ago I recall they gave a main draw WC to Pavlyuchenkova who was ranked 311 at the time. Like Alison she had lost in the 1st round of the juniors the year before but unlike Alison Nastya also had won several junior Grand Slams. Having said I think it's a possibility I would also have to say it's probably a long shot. As someone who will be going to the Wimbledon qualifying and would love it if Alison is playing I hope I'm wrong. They do tend to give a couple of QWC to non Brits so it could happen. Fingers tightly crossed.

Oh and this is an interview I just saw of Alison after the match, worth watching I think. :)

Daar hou ik me allemaal mee bezig.'

Aasgieren

Can anyone tell me the main points of the article please?

Where is Alison playing next?

Håkon
Jun 4th, 2011, 11:41 PM
Can anyone tell me the main points of the article please?

She doesn't fit the stereotype of tennis players

quit the VTV academy because she found it too weird to have friends as competitors (and also had an injury and saw no point in sitting alone far from her family)

her family covered the costs of a personal coach (along with a few other players at the local club in the small town), but those expenses aren't covered on tour, so it has been a big investment for her father.

Her father runs the finances and is always trying to find the cheapest option for hotels and so on, but doesn't want Alison to get distracted from the tennis, so declines sponsorship invitations - instead she should grow up slowly

After her successes in Brussel, though, she got a deal with the VTV academy - they help with sponsors and logistics, but they stay independent. And she has a personal sponsor. So the finances should be solved for a while.

She attends a normal high school, which is difficult because she misses so many classes, but they work with the administration there to solve the problems, and her father thinks it's important that she has friends outside of tennis.

And finally it praises her mental strength and 'ice coolness' - saying she doesn't get carried away, and then more about the father saving money. :p

Think that was it. Native Dutch speakers feel free to correct.

As for your other question, I read that she was going to try to play in 's-Hertogenbosch, but the Q cut-off there was 112...so she will need a wild card (which isn't entirely impossible as the Dutch girls are all going to Wimbledon Q)

She just (yesterday) withdrew from 25k ITFs during the 1st week of Wimbledon anyway, that suggests to me that she's playing Wimbledon juniors at least.

Tully
Jun 5th, 2011, 07:26 AM
Wow - thank you so much for that!

I was intrigued by her background as didn't think she was with VTV and this answers that. It must be very tough financially for all these young players starting out.

I hope she can get a Rosmalen qualifying wildcard, fingers crossed.

Alison is entered into Wimbledon juniors. She had entered the Roehampton G1 event the week before (19 June) but withdrew yesterday.

She had been entered in the Gerry Webber Open (Junior - Grade 2), the week of 14 June but she withdrew on 31st May.

Funny that when I missed the match vs Wickmayer in Brussels I genuinely thought it would be months, or even years, before I got a chance to see Ginger Powah again.

Took some notes, writeup coming soon either here or at the match score thread in GM if there is one.

so how do you see her chances on the real tour?

Dunno. I'm usually not very optimistic about the chances of players with wonky ground games. And I see what she does well (serve, FH, bag of tricks) and I think "So does Polona Hercog". But then again she has a better BH than Hercog (who has none), and when compared to most other young players, having a good FH and a shite BH beats having a good BH and a shite FH as it's much easier to bring a FH to bear (footwork required to do so is simpler) than the opposite.

Your take?

fouc
Jun 12th, 2011, 05:39 PM
I have no idea. What I remember from the match against Wickmayer, is that her ground game wasn't exactly that wonky. She wasn't going to the net at all, and she did try to take initiative earlier and dominate from the ground. I think her FH is also better than Polona's and she seems very smart on court. Then there are those passages of total crap :tape: like if she didn't care. I wonder if flattening those shots would do her any good.

She's on the entry list for Clermont-Ferrand ($25,000) next week. The week of 3rd of October she's not on any entry ITF entry list. Maybe she'll try to get into quallies in Linz? And then in Luxembourg the week after? Although the MD entry list for Linz is quite strong so I doubt she'll get in.

Alisin just won her 5th ITF title at $10k Glasgow.
Nice start to 2012 after struggling at the end of 2011.

Next up Alison's schedule:

23 Jan: $10k Kaarst Germany
30 Jan: $25k Sunderland UK, she's in qualifying so if she does well in Germany might miss it.

Excellent :D

How long does it take for $10k points to be added to a ranking?

Does anyone know what Alisons goals are for 2012? I think top 200 is realistic, achievable but also challenging.

It seems she has given up juniors? I think that is good. But hope she plays both RG & Wimbledon juniors for the experience.

Alison is going to play a $25k in Morroco in a couple of weeks.

About to play the final in $10k Kaarst, Germany. Good Luck for final.

About Fed Cup, Kirsten is in horrible form, just lost rd 1 in $25k. Not at her best. They may as well give Alison the experience of a Fed Cup singles in my opinion.

Jovanovski has a terrible serve and just lost to Dellacqua in Melbourne. I'd throw Alison in there on day 2. Probably wouldn't play her on day 1 against JJ. Let her absorb the atmosphere and prepare mentally on day 1.

Alisin played the deciding doubles with Yanina. Unfortunatelybthey lost in 3 sets.

It was great Devries showed confidence to play Alison in the deciding match. But I can't help & think Alison was played in the wrong match.

Alisin has hardly played doubles and Kirsten was never going to beat Jivanovski. I'd have played Alison in singles & go for the surprise factor. Then play the two experienced players who have played together before in doubles.

Anyone know what is next for Alison?

She's on the entry list of Macon ($10,000) in the week of 20 Feb. She's currently listed as 2nd in MD.

It is a shame she could not play n the Sunderland $25k due to Fed Cup.

I've checked the ITF schedule and unfortunately there is not a lot of $25k events in Europe at the moment. There is a $25k in Bath next month which hopefully she will play. Alison has traditionally only played in Europe or close to home (to reduce costs Id expect). Hopefully once the clay season begins there will be bigger events for Alison to enter in Europe and not that far from Belgium

Sam.
Oct 7th, 2012, 01:47 AM
I don't know but she's out of Limoges this is sure ;) I think it's normal that she don't wanna play the Q in all her events.. She can lose in Limoges Q and win between 0 and 4 poins or she can win the 3 rounds and take only 7 points but if she plays in Glasgow and win only 1 round she already grab 8 points and would be probably less tired. I think she did a good choice and i would do the same  She'll probably skip Poitiers and i'm not sure that she was able to make the Q-draw there. You forgot that she's still on the list for Ismaning in Germany too ;)

Tully

I didn't forget Isnaning I just thought it was her 2nd priority. But with Alisin it appears best to ignore what she puts as priority on her entrance! I'd like her to play Ismaning cause then she could play doubles with Flipper - that's just a dream

Makes mor sense when you look at points.

But to me Alison is one that has always tried to minimise travel costs which makes complete sense as playing on tour is very expensive. So I was surprised from that perspective.

I can't see Alison going to Australia. She always seems to play as close as possible to home to minimise revel costs so I expect her GS qualifying debut will hopefully be at RG.

If she did consider Aus though there are some ITFs post AO she could hang around for to make the trip worth it. I expect she'll start 2013 with West European ITFs though.

Alison will start her season at Glasgow $10 k on 14 January.

There are not many higher level ITFs in Europe at this time of year so I am not surprised to see her start at $10k. Hopefully she gets maximum matches.

2013 is going to be a very important year for Alison.

As a comparison (& yes I know all playersare different and mature at different times) but at 18 Yanina's year end rank was 221. Alison's official year end rank according to ITF was 220, although she has moved up to 200 now.

At 19 Yanina finished in top 100 at 69.

How will Alison do?

I want Alison to make top 100 but I think top 150 is more realistic goal.

Alison needs to play qualifying at next three slams and hopefully qualify in 2 (I'd like all 3 of course!) of them. She needs to start focus on playing $50k / $25k / $75k events and going deep. Throw in some wta qualifying events come the clay season.

I can understand why Alison is starting at a $10k given the ITF schedule and she needs matches but it should be her last $10k.

Does anyone know how much if any support Alison get from VTV? I remember reading an article with Alison's Dad speaking about how hard it is financially on tour and they always do everything they can to minimise costs.

I don't understand why she doesn't get financial help from the tennis federation.
Meanwhile the Belgian juniors literally travel all around the world. Just look at Elise Mertens: from Japan to the US, to Mexico, and now to Australia. Idem dito for many of our other juniors. I can't imagine their families pay for everything?

Well the loss in Eilat wasn't really surprising, considering Alison didn't have much time to readjust to playing outdoors again and against a decent opponent all things considered it was an okay effort. The fact Alison did take both sets to 5 all though makes it a little disappointing that she wasn't able to find a way into a third set but that's life.

Anyway...I know next week Alison will be playing Fed Cup for Belgium but what then? There are no WTA events in Europe until the clay season but even more concerning is that there is a complete lack of events at ITF level in Europe above 10k level for the next couple of months. In that time all there is, is one 25k in Moscow starting February 18th, a 50k in France starting March 25th, a 25k in Estonia starting the same week and two 15ks in Great Britain mid March.

That is a very limited selection. I'm wondering if Alison will just make do with these or will she finally start travelling a bit. Probably the former as pretty much every decent event for the next couple of months is a long way away and there doesn't even seem to be any events outside of Europe in close proximity to each other so she could do 2 or 3 events without having to pay for too many long haul flights.

Anyone know Alison's plans?

So instead Alison will play $15k Sunderland (week of Innisbrook - 18th March) followed by $50k in France week of 25th march.

Not much point to go to America for one week for 1 week then back to France immediately.

In April there are $25k events in Edgbaston, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and $50k in Turkey. So I'd imagine Alison would make her schedule around those events.

Good. Those combined with the 50k in France next week should give Alison plenty of opportunities to pick up more ranking points over the next few weeks. It's about time!!!

The last three months must have been very frustrating for Alison. She's been in good form but there have been virtually no ITFs above 10k in Europe these last three months. Really has been a disgrace there have been so few events to play. I hope this is something the ITF look at for next year. That there can't even be a few 25ks scattered about Europe the 1st few months of the year is just ridiculous.

I guess as long as the economic will stay like this, it will be only worse next year. Even in Belgium they cancelled already 2 25k tournaments.

Yes Alison is in the Katowice qualifying entry list.

Good to see, hopefully she is able to sneak in to some more WTA qualifying draws.
