View Full Version : Zamboni's annual pictures and notes from Rosmalen (monday added)

Jun 13th, 2010, 08:34 PM
Yes it's Rosmalen this week, so time for my annual useless notes, and of course my pics.
I won't post too many pics in here, if you want more of any player, you can request it and I will upload them, but that will probably take some time ;)

I didn't watch a lot of practices today as I managed to miss pretty much all the players I am interested in. Got to the court just as Anabel and Ana were leaving, I saw Sara's coach, but she was just gone, he told me:awww:, I heard Vinci but went to a match and when I came back half an hour later she was gone again, etc....

Anyway, the notes.

Malek vs Coin
Typical messy WTA match. There were soooo many breakpoints! I just checked the stats: 11 breaks out of 37 breakpoints. That does sum up the match pretty well.
I paid most attention to Malek, and I have to say, her backhand has improved. A bit. It's still weak though. And all the slicing she does, especially on her bh but also on her fh is enough to drive anyone crazy. Her main problem is her inconsistency. She would play 2 or 3 good points, and then totally disappear for the next few points.
Coin's biggest problem - at least in the first set - was the balltoss. She had to toss the ball twice quite often.
I didn't watch the 2nd set but when I came back for the 3rd set, I noticed that the level of play had definitely improved, and the intensity was much higher. Malek especially is quite fun when the match gets intense ;)

Parra Santonja - Pivovarova
Not much to say about this. Parra disappointed me, somehow I always expect more of her than what she shows when I see her play. I think her serve especially should be so much stronger than what it is, considering her body *. The motion is so static (nice contradiction, I know) and I feel it could be much stronger.

*which I should not make any further comments on....

Cibulkova surprised me in a positive way. She was playing better than I expected. But Robson is really talented. All her shots are in place, she just needs a lot of finetuning and then I think she can be really good. I don't know if her current coach is the right guy to do that but they do seem to have a nice click - I saw them practising later, and he was giving a lot of advice on her serve especially but it all went in a really relaxed atmosphere.
Oh, and Laura also needs some mental help. Maybe it's just her age, but when things don't go her way, she looks upset, gets down on herself and that doesn't help her the next point. She needs to work on that. To be fair, it improved a lot since I last saw her though (that was her first WTA match, against Benesova in Luxembourg).

I don't particularly like either play so didnt stay long and didn't really think about how they were playing. You'd expect Petkovic to win that more easily though.

Thank you! Why is everyone wearing those blue shoe laces?

Jun 13th, 2010, 08:41 PM

Petkorazzi, that's a terrible colour combination :help:

Thanks for the report & pics BTW :wavey:

Kirilenko/Vesnina - Arvidsson/Rus
Got to this match when there was 1 game to play so just took a couple of pics and that was it.
Oh, and Kiri, headband? Don't;)

Rybarikova - Safina
First time I saw Magdalena play except for a few games here and there, and I liked it. Does she always have that variety in her game, with shorter sliceballs? If she doesn't, she picked up that tactic very well because it worked perfectly, nearly every time she did that, she won the point.
And Dinara, oh, Dinara....what to say?
It's strange actually, when you watch her, it's like nothing changed. Her game is the same, her attitude is the same, and still, there is something so obviously different about her these days, compared to, say, a year ago. I don't know how to describe it, it's a sort of desperation, of "this is what I do so this is what I will do, no matter what", like she goes through routines, even with the screams and the firstpumps, without her heart really being in it. "It" is simply not there.
Then - Dinara's coach. She has someone knew, don't know who he is, but I'm posting a pic.
Krajan is also around at Rosmalen though. He seems to be working with Cibulkova, is that right? :o

With the new coach

Some stuff from around the practice courts
Zalameda, so cute. Practiced with Dekmeijere for about half of the day (in 2 sessions)

Rosmalenqueen Tammy :)

Warming up with a ball - the Italian way ;)

What a fine doubles player she was :worship:

Thank you! Why is everyone wearing those blue shoe laces?
I was getting to that ;)

Random stuff
Coolest ever (but not entirely convenient) seats for linesmen:worship:
(and yes there ís some kind of chair under it at least)

Confused (or ahead of time) umpire

The blue shoelaces.
They are related to Unicef. For every ace hit, a certain amount of money goes to Unicef. You can buy the laces at the tournament, and support this (I believe the maximum you pay is 35 euro).
The idea behind the shoelaces is that the players who wear them support this initiative, and of course Unicef in general.

That's it for today.

It's has something about the sponsor UNICEF!!;)

Thanks for posting. Have a blast this week! :bounce:

Riza is such a QT :hearts:

Ps, any pics of Rocky & Sarah would be appreciated :D

Jun 13th, 2010, 08:59 PM
Cool report Zamboni - thanks :wavey:

Pivovarova and Rus are beautiful :hearts:  Wish you could've gotten a picture of Kiri though :p

And I would say Rybarikova does have that variety in her game. She tends to use her one handed slice often (maybe to make up for how bad her two hander is? :help:) and will come into the net as well. :)

Jun 13th, 2010, 08:59 PM
thanks linda :)
magda always play like that ;) this is why she's so good on grass :hearts:
tadde is the only player without the blue shoes laces :help::smash:

Just 1 I think. They were on the wrong side of the net in that 1 game ;)

Is Cibulkova smelling the balls ? I was watching a livestream of this match a noticed she did this at least once near the end of the match.

It's a weird habit, and funny at the same time.

Jun 13th, 2010, 09:07 PM
Vesnilenko pics, please :sobbing:

Jun 13th, 2010, 09:17 PM
Then - Dinara's coach. She has someone knew, don't know who he is, but I'm posting a pic.
Krajan is also around at Rosmalen though. He seems to be working with Cibulkova, is that right? :o

Her new coach is Gaston Etlis. And yes, it appears that Krajan is now working with Cibulkova.

And one more thing:
Dinara has the same necklace, or at least the same stupid thing dangling on it, as Maria Elena Camerin has been wearing recently:help:
I think they're so silly:lol:

Arantxa (Parra, that is ) :hearts:

Jun 13th, 2010, 10:30 PM

I thought it was Myskina at first glance.

Jun 13th, 2010, 10:45 PM
Thanks very much for the pics !! :D
Such a shame there are only terrible servers at Rosmalen, because it's a great initiative to gain money with aces !! It happened at Bercy 2008 too, Tsonga aced his opponents so many times, so there were a lot of money :)

If you see Justine, could you take a picture for me please??! :sobbing: but enjoy your Rosmalen trip ! ;)

Jun 13th, 2010, 10:56 PM
Parra hit 11 aces today. In 2 sets. I mean, how can that disappoint you? What did you really expect from her? She's not Serena :p

I guess she has a great serve for a player who's not in the top 40 and that's it.

Jun 13th, 2010, 11:00 PM
Is Cibulkova smelling the balls ?
It must be a sponsorship thing with UNISNIFF ;)

Brianti and Rodionova aren't wearing them either. ;)

And Safina.
And a couple of others around the practice courts as well.

Second (and last :() day of my 2010 Rosmalen adventures:

Bammer vs Errani
I just want to forget this match, really. First of all, credits go to Bammer. I hadn't seen her play in a loooong time, but she did really well, she hit with a lot of power and precision. So many balls landed just in or on the lines. She really overpowered Sara. Speaking of her, get a serve girl! It seemed to have improved a couple of months ago, and actually during the warm up the motion looked ok, but in the match the serve was just nowhere. She ain't gonna win matches if she can't hold serve:mad: And she was getting so frustrated during the match, talking to herself, yelling, the whole thing. The best was when she argued with the umpire over a linecall though: "You don't see nothing!"
In general: forget, move on, work hard, try to improve.
And big telepathic :hug:s from me!

Vinci vs Zahlavova Strycova
Enjoyable match. Saw only the end but it was quite fun to watch. Would have expected Roby to win more easily but at least she took it in 2 at the end.

Arvidsson vs Ivanovic
Don't think I need to report on it, everyone who is interested has probably seen/read about it already.
However, I saw only the 1st set and was very surprised to see the 2nd and 3rd set scoreline. What happened to Sofia there? :o I was quite enjoying seeing her play pretty well in the 1st set!

Then the football started, and I went to the big screen, and not just me;)
(there were people standing behind what you see there as well, it was quite busy despite 3 Dutchies playing at that time)

Jun 14th, 2010, 09:59 PM
Coin vs Dulgheru
I was surprised at how close this match was. After watching Coin's match yesterday, and Dulgheru's practices yesterday and today (looked really good) I thought Alex would win this much more easily.

Rus vs Medina Garrigues
I just still can't get over Arantxa's technique. How she wins matches with that, is still beyond me, really. And Anabel, that wasn't pretty. You can do better than that.

Jans/Olaru vs Robson/Peers
Didn't see much, so no report, just pics:

Flipkens vs King
Kirsten:worship::drool: Probably the best performance I've seen in 2 days, except for a small lapse at the end. A demonstration of grasstennis, left Vania completely without a chance.
A lot of Belgian fans were at this match, and they were loud :o I don't know why Belgians say Dutchies are loud, at tennis it's definitely the other way around.

Jun 14th, 2010, 10:06 PM
Henin vs Kerber
Not much to say. Solid from Justine. Good to see Kerber back in Rosmalen :)

Poutchek/Senoglu vs Kondratieva/Uhlirova
So close, so close! They made me miss my train, and almost the next one too :o But it was enjoyable. It was the last match still going on and the court was much more crowded than it normally would have been, which was nice.
At 5-6 0-40 in the 1st set Kondratieva slipped and got hurt, she asked for the trainer so there was a long break....perfect time ;) After the timeout she wasn't walking properly but strangely enough playing tennis was ok.

Jun 14th, 2010, 10:12 PM

* Ana, warming up:

* Dulgheru&Tanasugarn and Coin&Arvidsson
Just warming up, but all of them were very relaxed :) Funny moment: when Coin and Arvidsson finished and Coin walked to the other side of the court, Tammy called out to her: Good luck in your match! Then they all laughed, as Julie was playing Tammys practice partner:lol:

* Kops-Jones and Borwell
For CCR of course:

* Errani and Vinci
Missed them again :(
But I did see them play with the Tri-Tennis after their practice, as if they still need to learn it:lol: And they also went on the air-cushion jumping thing:haha: Sara must really love it, as she hijacked it for a long time with Flavia last year and now she went on it with Roby:lol: (and they're the only players I have ever seen on it)
Too funny!

Jun 14th, 2010, 10:20 PM
And to finish it, some more
Random stuff
* Sophie Lefevre is like everywhere. Shouldn't she be doing something instead of just walking the grounds and checking out a million matches all day? :o

* The players who were around the practice courts most were quite different than in other years. Or I really just kept missing all the others.

* I'm getting scared none of my faves will play here next year as they sucked:tape:

* Some entourage is SO annoying. Most annoying ones:
- Vinci's coach. I like Roby, and I like that guy, but seriously, he should shut up. Whenever she was on his side of the court it was a constant stream of "Vamos, Forza, Bravissima, Vai Roby, Brava, Forza, Bene" etc. Ugh :o
- Sophie Lefevre (there she is again) at Kondratieva's much. Fine that she's worried about her, but I think the girl can make up her own mind about whether she wants to keep playing or not.
- Sally Peers' mum (I think). Just shut up! "Come on girls, one at a time, good game, good shot, one at a time, come on, that's it" etc.

* The Fatboys are not convenient for, ehh, bigger people. There was one pretty big linejudge and he was not happy with them, especially as he was doing the service line. And tiebreaks...At the last doubles match of the day, there was one guy making sissing noises everytime he sat down. That was getting rude at some point :o Good thing the linejudge could laugh about it.

Jun 15th, 2010, 12:19 AM
Thanks for the Dinara pics. She's already in England

Jun 15th, 2010, 12:27 AM

Nice pics Lin! :D

Jun 17th, 2010, 11:16 PM
A lot of Belgian fans were at this match, and they were loud :o I don't know why Belgians say Dutchies are loud, at tennis it's definitely the other way around.

Oh yeah.. I totally second this. Sometimes it's a bit embarassing.

But great thread Linda, hope you had fun!! And great pics too! Too bad I cannot be around this year.
