Na's third title of her career :) Served and hit pretty well today and should be very proud of herself! Finally a good result after struggling so much after the Australian Open.

Unfortunate for Maria that her serve kinda deserted her after she had kept it stable for most of the week. She just can't seem to break Na at Birmingham

Bodes well for Wimbledon, for both of them :D

3 aces / 0 DFs for Na
1 ace / 7 DFs for Maria.

What a disappointing performance from Maria. :o Her shotmaking throughout the match left a lot to be desired. Obviously this will be something for her to work on before Wimbledon. Na Li really did a good job of playing some short balls, which took Maria out of her comfort zone.

Such a shame she can only serve well against nobodies and her serve breaks down with the rest of her game when she actually faces a decent opponent.

Actually a shame though, I don't really feel she's even Top 20 worthy atm and things aren't looking too good. Something needs to be done. New coach maybe?

Sharapova is playing too many MM events. She is better off getting buried by a top 20 player than thinking a win over Sesil or Riske means something.

I think she is smart to experiment with rackets and synthetic strings, but still a lot of work to do for Maria

Victory ceremony Na behaviour was sooooooo weird...

Yeah Na is always like that whenever I watch her interviews  She doesn't articulate herself well enough in English and her light "jokes" don't come out well

No, she was outplayed.

She was indeed. Na's return game was deep and effective and didn't give Maria enough time to recover. There were quite a few points where all of Na's shots just hit the baseline a few times over. Amazing to watch really. When Maria smacks the ball for a winner she makes it look so strenous with her long weird swing, Na makes it look effortless. :hearts:

Maria gave up in the end because she knew Na was on form and she was not going to win no matter what she did. Great serving by Na. Maria actually started off playing really well so all the credit goes to Na for winning this. Na was fortunate she played Maria today because if she played some low ranked player she would have lost - Na only plays her best against top players.

Well, this is part of her recovery. There is nothing to worry. it happens that you can have a bad day. I think this is a bad day for her.!

I saw her playing against Justin at RG this year and I think she can pull it back. I still have faith in Maria. However, she needs to move better in grass r make a better return, either one will be just fine

Oh, and for those who said she doesn't come off well in her speeches; well yesterday she really had the crowd laughing. So it seems she does. it's just obvious english isn't her first language, but frankly, I admire anyone who can converse even remotely well, in front of all those people, in an almost alien language.

So Maria will be seeded 17th for Wimbledon!

She will meet a 9-16 seed in the third round!

If Maria meets a 9-12 seed, she will meet a 5-8 seed in the fourth round and 1-4 seed in the quarters.
If Maria meets a 13-16 seed, she will meet a 1-4 seed in the fourth round and 5-8 seed in the quarters.

The final was shorter than the men's presentation at Halle.

:rolls: I stopped watching it, it's annoying when it lasts forever in a non-Slam tournament.

Maybe cause she realized Li was playing too well and that playing the way she was playing, there was no way she'd win...so she gave in a little.

:spit:

@Narutos :  Caro plays pretty well on grass and Sharapova still struggles against most of top players, so I think I am not that crazy to think Caro could beat Maria :tape: Everybody thought Henin would destroy her (I didn't agree), and Henin struggled really hard.

putting this disaster in perspective, it was still just an mm, after all. and, on the flip side, if maria had won today, she might have gotten overconfident heading into wimbledon. now, if she remains positive, she will still be hungry.

Maria could not do anything. Na was pounding the ball ridiculously hard. You could even hear Maria straining under the power. Na was by far the better player and Sharapova could genuinely do nothing. The reason why she beat Na on clay is because Na's powerful shots are basically stopped dead on clay. On grass, it's no surprise that Sharapova lost. Na's game is perfect for grass, and when she's playing well there's next to nothing that one can do. Congratulations to Na, she really earnt the title today.

I also don't get why people are panicking about this. A) If she met Serena/Venus in the QF that would still be her best GS performance to date. B) She still reached the final of a tournament and that's an achievement in itself.

But if she loses to a scrub in a Slam, it won't be even funny. I want her to get crushed by Henin in Wimbledon final (but it's not gonna happen  ) . You know, I was a Masha fan circa 2006 , and when she lost to Henin at RG, I was not even that happy, I was mostly relieved. ;)

What's all the talk about the tank job that is flooding this thread? Don't Maria fans always say how she fights till the end, for every point, no matter the score...? All of a sudden, she changed and started tanking? She was simply outplayed, that's it. It's not quantum physics.

3rd: Loses to Zheng and ALMOST/Should've lost to Dushevina. Good opponents.
4th: Loses to Safarova Good opponent.
5th: Wins Strasbourg. One somewhat decent opponent, the rest were scrubs again. Average ranking of the players she faced: 108 :help:
6th: FO where she faced a scrub, then an ok player I guess and then we all know what happened next. (First match this season that she lost when she should've won)

Another laboured display from Sharapova. No doubt, her serve is at least comparable pace-wise now to 05/06, but she has lost so much consistency and general accuracy on her serve, and seemigly the rest of her game has followed.

For someone who looked so much more agile, slender and purposeful on the surface 5 years ago, Sharapova just looks totally uneasy. Takes far too many lumbering steps at the ball, which cuts down reaction time and leaves her basically vulnerable any time she's forced to play defensively. As soon s Li drove Sharapova out-wide to her backhand- point over. Simple as. The main horror display from Sharapova today was her inability to string together any kind of returning rythm. This has really been the story for Sharapova since her AO win in '08, losing multiple return games with the most random, careless returns. There's hardly any compromise either, always trying to be UBER-aggressive, even when the %s are ridonkulously low. Against a competent, accurate server like Li, you have to at least try and work yourself into the point, instead of trying to blast yourself out of return games.

Li is such an anomaly when she plays like this. Strong, precision serving that gave her immediate control of the rallies, and she wasn't making such inexplicable errors deep in rallies. If anything she looked the far more comfortable trading pace to pace, knowing that her better mixture of width and pace was going to be effective, and indeed more effective than Sharapova's gameplan. Her BH CC is a top 5 shot in the making, with her ability to come over the ball and yank opponents out of court. Her footwork can lapse on that shot (and sometimes disastrously so), but the creativity is somewhat underrated IMO. Has a canny ability to hit down both lines with a fair degree of disguise, holding her shot until her opponent is left stranded.

Positive week for Li, and of course there are no certainties about her future performances (when are there ever?), but she played with enough conviction today to suggest a strong grass campaign. Sharapova is looking increasingly generic off the ground against top 20 players, but we'll see. If her serving stops fluctuating so wildly, then she has a shot at finding some kind of 'elite' level. Far, far away from that right now though.

Sharapova is looking increasingly generic off the ground against top 20 players, but we'll see. If her serving stops fluctuating so wildly, then she has a shot at finding some kind of 'elite' level. Far, far away from that right now though.

great analysis! my own personal take on maria's failures on grass is, that she's just gotten too tall to play effectively on the surface. think about it; the ball stays the lowest on grass, and reaching for those low bounces if you're 6'2'', is not easy.

it'd be interesting to know what her height was, when she won it in 2004. she was only 17, and growing, so she had to be shorter than her current height.

the talk about first top 20 player is hilarious. we have wozniacki as #3 and schiavone at #6 and there are better players than these two in the top 50.
i mean maria would win against wozniacki any time. and schiavone probably too

Please, Schiavone won a Slam this year, and Wozniacki is more consistant than Maria so they deserve their rankings. If Maria can't win against a top 20 opponent, how can you say she would win on any given day Wozniacki and Schiavone based on their current form? That's pure bullshit imo.

Debby what DO you want:lol: don't be so silly Pushniacki and Franco aren't playing top 5 tennis atm Li played really well in te first set and was actually dealing with Maria's pace I just can't see Woz and Franco do that. Maria was horrible in ROS I give you that but from baseline I don't think she should have a lot of trouble against both of them they never handle Maria's pace and probably never will.

yeah, that's what i remember; the commentators were saying that she was 6'0'' in 2004. and you definitely have a point that she may be more than 6/2'' now. there have definitely been articles on the web that have said she is taller; i think, for glamour reasons (i guess, according to fashion rules, it may not be "seemly" for a woman to be too tall), maria's camp is hiding her real height.

Princess Olga almost took a set off Caro and she's like a D-level Sharapova. Caro has nothing to hurt Maria with and would be blown off the court in pretty quick fashion.

Anyway, this loss to Li means nothing really. When Na is on she can beat anybody and make them look pretty bad in the process. :inlove:

Maria just needs to focus on staying healthy and regaining her consistency.

Ai way too good today, Maria I think has really struggled at Brum because suddenly she finds herself in the semis/final without having played anyone half decent then along pops Na who's had tougher runs through.

Today though, return of serve was key, Maria's was gash and Li was handling hers fine. Masha came out so strong I thought I was finally going to see a great performance out of her here, but after the first two games it was really all Na. Much more spin, placement and control, kept her head better, totally outclassed her. Pics to come.

Nice win for Li Na. I believe she's back in the Top 10 again. Very solid player. Might go far at Wimbledon.

In her interview, Sharapova stated that she played Birmingham to get some "games" in. Very disingenuous on her part. Just a few days ago Maria was reminded that Na Li beat her last year. Maria responed that she doesn't like to lose 2 times in a row by the same person. OOPS ! Li "beat" her down...

I wonder if Maria will make a bold statement about Wimbledon ? Just take your licks Maria...

There are several aspects to Sharapova's game that are real weaknesses on grass. Her serve placement and serve in general are not that consistent. Her returns are erratic. Her movement is therefore vital and yet we all know that her movement and defensive are very poor in general. She also cannot hit a basic volley or execute a slice backhand. Almost all great grass court players are either phenomenal movers and athlets and MOST OF THEM have excellent slices (see Graf, Federer, McEnroe, Navratilova, Sampras, Edberg, Becker, Mauresmo, Novotna). If you don't have the slice then you better have great footspeed like Venus Williams, Lleyton Hewitt or Nadal. Sharapova, if played the proper way strategically by her opponent, has some pretty extreme vulnerabilities in her game that must be addressed IMHO.

Not picking on her at all btw. I like Maria's professionalism and diplomatic sense of fair play. I am only commenting on the flaws in her game on grass (and in general)

Having seen both live yesterday, I'm not surprised at this result. Na can match Maria for power and pace and her shots had far more consistent depth and width over the course of her semi-final in comparison to Maria. Her groundstrokes, particularly the CC shots, really skid through the court, moreso than Maria's did and her game seems more naturally suited to grass. However, the biggest difference was movement. Na looked nimble, light and quick, whereas Maria looked flat-footed and heavy at times. She just did not seem comfortable on the surface.

Well done Na; keep this up! Maria is showing flashes of brilliance (in the semi's her serve was on fire - hit about 9 aces - but you also have to consider how strong/weak Riske is at returning) but still has work to do; still, a good showing at Wimbledon wouldn't totally shock me. Good luck! :D

Didn't watch the final as I suspected something like this would happen. Can't really say "expected result" though as I actually expected Sharapova to lose earlier, to Kudryavtseva or Rybarikova or some other random scrub.

Sharapova nowadays is just too slow, and her footwork is too clumsy, for her to be able to be consistently aggressive with her groundstrokes on any surface. On clay she can get away with playing neutral rallies until she gets a chance to set up her BH properly, but on grass she can be rushed and hit through before she can do so. Like I've said 32478543545 times before, ever since her final growth spurt in late 2005 Sharapova has become less competitive on grass with each passing year.

Just watched it. Maria was really poor at times and Na was more than good enough to just take complete advantage. Whenever Li moved her round, Li won the point. Li won the large majority of Sharapova's 2nd serve points. So there are the two porblems; movement and the serve. Mind you, by the end of the match, NOTHING Mria was doing was effective; her shots lost all direction and pace and Li took apart her game. Much for Maria to work on. And good for Na. She's fab when she's on.
