Very disappointed Magda couldn't do a better job defending her title. She never found her best tennis this week. I hope she does find it in the next couple of weeks.

But really glad Sesil has had such an excellent week even if her two best wins were both over two of my very favourite players. Please please don't stop now, Sesil. Take out Sharapova next. :rocker:

Sesil  :bigcry: I'm so happy for you!!!

5 great wins in Birmingham and second QF of the year :yeah:

Nice recovery in the final set though, she missed a MP at 62 *54 but managed to win in a convincing manner the third set!

Do your best against Sharapova!

Okay ...

Sesil played exactly as she has the last two matches: serve = means of starting the point, golden retriever at the back of the court, occasionally goes for a winner, seldom makes an error. Magda played exactly as she did against Makarova - very passive, 3/4 speed on the strokes in the rallies, she was more aggressive on the return but then wouldn't follow it up.

First set Magda was shocking, Sesil beyond solid, very deserved. Second set this was no choke from Sesil, Magda really stepped up to get the break back and it was only in the tiebreak that Sesil missed a couple of shots. Third set? Magda got really passive, REALLY passive and despite showing some fight just refused to follow her shots in (even though 90% of the time Sesil was defending with a lob when Magda came to the net). Fitting end to the match (Mags hitting a smash into the net), while Magda worked for and won that second set if Sesil had won in 2 there could have been no complaint.

Magda, or her coach, has really got to take the responsibility for her not making the Quarter Finals here. She won last year by serve volleying, mixing up the baseline stuff and coming in to finish off whenever she could. This year, none of it. At one point there was a dodgy call and her coach shouts out "They're not playing for fun, they're playing for money!" to the umpire. While of course that's the case, that kind of thought process might explain Magda's cautious, passive game - not wanting to jeapordise anything and letting the other girl make the mistake. Any scouting for 5 mins in either of Sesil's last two matches would have shown that she was getting everything back and only aggressive play would beat her. Rant over :P Pics coming.

p.s. I've really taken to Sesil this week, she seems a really nice girl (unlike quite a few of the others) and I couldn't help but feel happy for her after her win. She had a little chat with some fans after the match (the guy was asking her how exactly to pronounce Sesil and she said she was so happy he could call her whatever he wanted). Been interesting seeing her before matches, on her own, listening to music, doing footwork drills on the walkways the public use, sitting down on benches with people to change her trainers, etc., I hope she goes further this week :yeah:

This court especially, you're standing literally overlooking it, probably 20-25 feet back from the baseline. Got my best shots of her last year when she was on court 3 :) You do worry at times the little alert beep of the camera will be off putting (or I do :p), but at Birmingham there's the centre court with about 1,500 or so seats, but then 4 courts side to side with woods along the back so if you're not on centre there's a LOT of chatter/other courts/announcements to play through.
