Katya :(:(

Did all the hard work in the second, clawing her way back from 75 41 down. She will be gutted.

Still one win this week is a vast improvement on the last couple of months so well done.

Oh Magda :tape: Win's a win though, hopefully she can keep going in this tournament. Last time I saw her play, her BH is still crap, she's going to have clean her BH up if she really wants to make a dent into the rankings.

Katya :awww:

Makarova is useless and deserved to lose. Serving for the match twice, led 5*-4 in TB too.:help:

Magda... :) :woohoo:

These tight wins often give more confidence than easy ones, but she really should have won in straight sets though.

Not at all the convincing win I would have liked but at least Magda has made it very clear here that she is not going to give up her title without a real fight. Magda is obviously going to have to lift her game further however. But she will have another match to do that with tomorrow against Sesil a player who, although she has improved a lot on grass, I am still confident of her beating. Certainly though by the quarterfinals Magda will need to be on top of her game to go further.

Very good effort by Elena, who is pretty good on grass herself, she came so very close to an excellent win. Hope she does well the rest of the grass season.

What a strange match this was. First set Magda got breaks up twice then gave them straight back (first time through errors, second time through good Katya play), finally getting the final breakthrough she deserved to take the first.

Then, came out for the second having clearly gotten some good advice, started being wayyy more aggressive - coming in behind the serve, shortening the points, then ... totally retreated. Makarova started playing really well towards the end of the set, at 6*-5 she was 0-40 and it was her hitting winners that got her through to close out the set. Magda couldn't buy a first serve at this point.

Third set was ridiculous, Magda giving Makarova so much time on the ball and that's why it was so close. from 4-4 though it was a total joke, Magda wasn't doing anything, it was *all* on Katya's racket, she'd play well to break, then play terribly to give it back, rinse and repeat, same in the tiebreak, albeit Magda did step her game up somewhat.

Story of the match though for both players was the return of serve. Katya's was *superb* today, hit hard, consistently deep, giving her a chance in a lot of rallies. Magda on the other hand completely refused to do anything other than bunt it back halfway between the service line and the base line. Even some of the rallies she was like that, playing not even 3/4 speed strokes rolling it back in giving Makarova loads of time, hoping for an error.

Total bust tactically from Magda, utter heartbreaker for Katya because at certain key moments she played really well to both serve out the second and give herself opportunities to do that for the match. Finishing line was just too big for her. Pics to come.

Katya really choked in the end
