A surprise but not a shock. Sesil has been making good improvements to her grasscourt game over the last couple of years and I was impressed with what I saw of her in Roehampton and against Kleybanova in the 1st round of the main draw at Wimbledon last year.

And Slava has played a lot of tennis on clay lately. Not only did she just make the quarterfinals of RG she also made it the finals of the mixed doubles as well. And with the weather being what it has been I doubt Slava has had a lot of time to get used to the grass conditions. While this was Slava's 1st grass match of the year in contrast this was Sesil's fourth match of this tournament.

I'm sure Slava will do better next week and in Wimbledon. No worries for me. :)

As for Sesil, great win, congrats girl!!! :yeah:

sorry R2...but it doesn't change anything really.

If she has ambitions to be a top player, losing to players above 100 in straight sets is never a good sign.

Oh well, Shvedova is a solid player but she lacks consistency like most of the players these days. That's what makes a difference between top10 and the rest of top50.
We saw this month anyone can reach Slam QF and even to win it ... so the score isnt that shocking to me.

Some serious over reactions here. To lose a 1st match on grass after a lot of matches at RG including a RG quarterfinal and a RG mixed final is no disgrace. Get back to me at the end of Wimbledon. I am quite confident Slava will get to at least the 3rd round of Wimbledon and she will probably get some wins next week as well. Losing this match really is not a big deal.

Actually I would say just the opposite. It is very much an argument FOR extending the grass season. Players need time to adjust from clay to grass. These surfaces are hugely different and with the grass season so short players simple do not have time to make those adjustments so you get results like this. If we had a longer grass court season it would ensure more players developed the needed skills to play on grass and it would mean that come Wimbledon players would have had enough time to be able to be playing their best grass court tennis.

I am reminded when Yaroslava bombed out last year to Scheepers in 2nd round or so.

Every grass court is different. I don't think Yaroslava plays too well at Birmingham...hopefully Eastbourne/Rosmalen and Wimbledon suit her better.

Exactly.

Slava's career has been constantly on the rise for the last 15 months. But it is not as if she has been some model of consistency. Her results have ranged wildly. She has had numerous great upsets over higher ranked players but also been an upset victim herself frequently, infact quite similar to quite a few other talented young improving players. Just because Slava has just reached the quarterfinals at RG one shouldn't assume she is going to suddenly be transformed into an ultra consistent player who is practically never beaten by lower ranked players. I'm a huge fan of hers, and I certainly don't expect that of her.

I would much rather Slava had a bad week here where the ranking points on offer aren't particularly great and the prestige next to nothing, than at Wimbledon where I believe Slava is nicely placed to have her best SW19 showing.

If one is going to add an additional week between RG and Wimbledon it would be very silly not to use it. Those players who want a week rest between the end of RG and the start of their grass campaign will be able to take it much more easily. But those who want three weeks of tournaments before Wimbledon will be able to have those too. And us as fans get an additional week to watch grass court tennis. Everyone's a winner.
