View Full Version : Mirjana Lucic preparing for a big run at Wimbledon?

Lucic is really beating the crap out of the low-level players at B'ham right now. We can safely assume that she has asked a WC at Wimby, and if she gets it, could be a threat to anyone. Lucic has bad movement but she is a dangerous player on grass and after Schiavone at RG would it be such big surprise if she puts together a huge run?

She will lose to a nobody

Are you kidding? It would be a huge surprise.

Nothing has indicated she is going to do this. Its not like she has been cleaning up in on the ITF circuit this year.

Not impossible, but certianly a big surprise.

it's far too early (or late depending on which way you're looking at it) to be making big predictions for her in a grandslam MD. i'm ecstatic that she won her first round match in birmingham although i'm not in denial of the fact that she was blessed with drawing MDM in the first round. Still she took the opportunity and won and i'm hoping she will get a kind draw at the wimbledon qualifying.

She only defeated Mariana Duque Marino who's an absolute shit of a grass court player.

 She barely beat Hlavackova in qualifying, had a win over Danilidou who hasn't been a top 100 player in 5 years, and trashed an out of form claycourter on grass.

I like Mirjana a lot, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Besides, she needs to qualify for Wimbledon first anyway. That said, she could certainly win a few matches or even cause an upset or two if she did make the main draw.

She'd beat you, so there's no need to be so rude. Plus, what would you know anyway, she's barely played any grass court matches in her life. Don't generalise all clay court specialists please.

Well, I hope she doesn't get a MDWC at Wimbledon. She just made it into the qualifying draw. I would prefer her to play qualies, where she would have a good chance to reach the MD though.

Exactly. First and foremost no way is she going to get a WC to Wimbledon and there is no reason why she should either. Those posters who are holding out hope that she will are deluding themselves. And nothing she has done thus far suggests she is going to be a "threat to anyone" she faces.

I like Mirjana I lot and I'm glad to see that she has worked her way back into the top 200. But to even hint that she might be capable of doing a Schiavone-like assault on Wimbledon is ludicrous and unwarranted hyping. My realistic hope for her is that with a decent draw in qualifying Mirjana she will have a good shot at qualifying for the main draw. And if as hoped Mirjana can get into the main draw it would be great if she gets a reasonable 1st round draw there and can get the 100 ranking points that come with a 1st round victory. I have absolutely no expectations beyond that although I would of course be absolutely delighted if she was able to go further.

If she can win her first round match in qualifying thats 40 points banked there.

Job done.

Indeed. I am hoping she can qualify and win around in the main draw for a bonanza 160 ranking points in total. But the single most important match will be the 1st in qualifying and if Mirjana comes away with at least the 40 ranking points that come with a 1st round qualie win she will have done alright and her trip to London will have been a success.

agreed, but she is succeeding already in birmingham. so even if she lost 1st round in wimbly qualies, her overall trip to UK will not have been a disaster.

She's got 25 ranking points so far this week. It's been a good week for her in terms of confidence but it terms of ranking points it's not been a great haul, about the same as making the semis at a 25K ITF. I really would hope she gets more than this.

True the results have been good, especially the first one. Beating Hlavackova on grass, a player I also like a lot and whose game is very suited to grass, was a great win for Mirjana and while the two since then were easier opponents, Eleni sadly being a shadow of her former self, the way Mirjana won both matches so empathically was excellent.

yeah i think she's the odds on favourite for Wimbledon after her first run win but i think she will fall slightly short. Predicted run:

R1 Lucic def Williams S (1) 6-1, 6-1
R2 Lucic def Hantuchova 6-0, 6-1
R3 Lucic def Zheng 6-2, 6-3
R4 Lucic def Henin 6-0, 6-0
QF Lucic def Stosur 6-4, 6-2
SF Lucic def Schnyder 6-7(10), 7-6(12), 22-20
F Date-Krumm def Lucic 0-6, 7-6(45), 34-32

and she won't commit more than 5 unforced errors in any match for the entire tournament.

26. Reverend Court
27. Navratilova
28. Goolagong
29. Sawamatsu

Seriously, stop hyping Mirjana, it is really baby steps atm. It was great she got through qualifying and won a match at Birmingham, who knows she may win another.

I don't want her to get a main draw wildcard for Wimbledon, she needs to play qualifying. First goal should be winning the 1st match and then trying to get into the main draw. Past that it isn't even worth thinking about. She hasn't played a GS in nearly 7 years! And the difference in playing GS's to being on the challenger circuit is huge!

IMO if she can maintain a decent enough level with the majority of challenger tournaments and a few WTA events for the rest of the year she should aim for getting into the main draw of the Australian Open. It's tough but not impossible.

She almost beat Steffi in 1999 and displayed to everyone her grass court skills. Given her inconsistency, it's really impossible to predict a result, but a deep run is definitely possible. Probable? No, but Miki has too much talent to have only made one GS SF.

Mirjana is actually a ballbasher. Its not like she is an skilled grasscourt player with a great variery of slices, volleys.. She does not move that well either..

Mirjana is the typical streaky player, ballbasher whose game clicked on at Wimbledon 1999. I donīt really see her having a deep run this year though. But its great to have her winning rounds on WTA events after 2-3 years of ITFīs mainly.

I'll be happy if she is healthy and plays well in qualies (and I don't expect her to get a main draw WC and kind of hope she doesn't because she needs the Q points). She's been steadily improving of the last year and this week is a big breakthrough, but let's not get ahead of ourselves :o

Well, that's what I meant. Her flat strikes containing so much pace penetrated so well that, when on, she could puthit anyone. If I remember correctly, her angles mixed things up really well, too. Almost paralleling Sprem's '04 run.

But yeah, her inconsistency accounts for significantly bad losses and slumping periods.

i think one of her advantages on grass is that she isn't afraid to come into net and has pretty solid volleys
