View Full Version : Schiavone being a safe top 10 for another year feels weird

Don't get me wrong, she deserves to win RG and it's not one of those hate threads. But because GS point are so important nowadays it feels weird. There recently was a surprise GS winner and suddenly she's supposed to be a top 6 contender in every tournament that she enters for another 12 months Like every top 4 will hope that they will draw her in quarters. Radwanska in top ten is so weird also. On the other hand you have Henin and Sharapova outside of top 15. Something must be fixed about the rankings. I know, Serena gets most of her points in GS performances and is the one to benefit most of the rankings system so you you might say that my thread is irrelevant. But still, today's rankings doesn't seem...right.

No. Feels great. Actually, she just won RG, but I don't see how it guarantees she'll be safe top ten the whole year. Some favorable seedings will be a nice treat for her.

You want to fix the ratings so that the ones you think should be in the top ten are there? Why not let the season play out, see what happens?

Nothing fails (except for your threads), you do realize that Henin hasn't even played six months on the Tour? And maybe Sharapova would be ranked higher if she could get past the 3rd round of a Major.

You are so right! Making rankings based on star power rather than results, brilliant! They need to change it!

This is not about not liking them. I don't "hate" either Schiavone or Radwanska. Or Wozniacki for that matter. But they don't belong to where they stand right now. Wozniacki seeded 3 at Wimbledon ? Give me a break. She somehow clawed her way to quarters at RG. As for Henin...well I hate her, for reasons on my own. But no one can't deny that she doesn't belong in top 10 seeds at Wimbledon.

No star power is stupid. It should be based on the shininess of their hair.

What a ridiclous argument, if winning a slam was evrything, Kim would be squarely in the top 10. She has the USO and miami and is still barely a top 10. Schiavne in no.6 means she has some good results to back thhe slam points.

Schiavone, Radwanska and Wozniacki earned their rankings on the court, just like everybody else. They belong exactly where they are.

Fran is also a defending a Premier & International leve tournament champion. Along with QF at Wimbldon and 4th round showings at US Open and AO.

But theres no way she sould be top 10.

Henin and Clijsters will claw their way up to top 10, don't worry about it. This is only temporary.

Radwanska has won enough matches to give her, her ranking. Henin has played what, 7 events this year? And is top 20! If Sharapova wants in the Top 10, she needs to win at bigger tournaments, and not just Memphis or Strasbourg.

The rankings are fine.

But because GS point are so important nowadays it feels weird.

usually people moan about GS points not weighing enough (see all the threads about undeserving no. 1's ), and now suddenly GS points are too important?

Change that to talk about the #1 position and we get what Williams fans were saying for most of 08 and 09.

It does indeed feel weird, but I think it feels weird because she's never been past No.11 before and she's gone straight from No.17-No.6 and she's now a GS champion. I'm not complaining though. I'll get used to it soon enough.

Ranking system needs to be more steep.

100 points for 2nd round at slams :help:

Also there should be more mandatory events.

ATP ranking works much better than WTA. WTA ranking rewards mediocre players playing many events.

Yes he is. He's just a very pragmatic non-reactionary common sense Williams fan with a wicked sense of humour. ;)

But certainly he is not a guy who is not going to lose sleep over whether Serena is ranked number 1 or number 3 that's true. :)

well with her new ranking she'll have better draws and won't be dealing with the likes of the Williamses in rd 3 of the Slams. She could go higher than 6.

Now she has to contend with justine/maria/safina/kuzy in the 3rd of wimby, nothing much has changed!

When will people ever learn how GS draws are made?
Schiavone is a top-8 seed, she can't meet #17-24 seeds in the third round.

The sad thing is that it means she won't be able to dispatch Generation Suckers in the early rounds of slams anymore.

It's going to be interesting how she backs it up anyway.

:o

she absolutely deserves it and i'm not even a fan. you can't argue with RESULTS. maybe if sharapova could get beyond the third round at a slam, she'd be seeded higher? her results don't merit a top-10 ranking, so argument ended.

And if she backs it up she'll deserve to stay in the top ten. Better this than faux #1's without slams.

I find it weird that she's in the Top 10 too, but its not meant as an insult at all (from me anyway).

Fran is just a player who I don't really notice ever - I was shocked at her ridiculously good Slam record the past year! I had no idea she made the 4th round of ANY Slam in the last 12 months, let alone Wimbledon QF + two 4th rounds.

So she definitely deserves her ranking, I just find it weird because it snuck up on me so fast.

But the OP....fail.

She won one of the 4 grand slams this year and thus deserves to be in the top ten. To me I see no issue with this

Well, it's not granted given the depth of competition in WTA, but she'll probably be 8-11 if she continues with her old results. She is a GS champion so I guess she does deserve it!
