View Full Version : Who (has or had) the best "2nd career"

Note: I deliberately omitted Jen, since her return was her "main career". And Monica, as hers (sadly) wasn't the typical "bored retired player unretires" of course.

Thanks to the Adminimod who fixed my typo in the poll as requested. :wavey:

Martina Muller of course, she has the most :inlove: 2nd career from all players and I hope she will have also 3rd:hearts:

And then maybe Kim...won a grandslam right after her comeback

Right now its Kim because she doubled her slam total.
I dont know when Navratilova had a 2nd career, at 50?

Kim Clijsters...
just because of that
SLAM WIN+MIAMI over an injured Venus
though some of her loses are still shocking...

Kim did win that Slam (and Miami), but since then where has she been? I'd say, Venus (post-2005 Wimbledon win) or even Serena, post-knee surgery. That's a lazy answer, I know. But Maria's is stalled, Justine's is stalled, Hingis' is nipped in the bud, Sesil no, Navratilova (?) not aware of her 2nd career, Lindsay nipped by babymaker, Kimiko's has been a long, hard slog, but I don't know where it is going. So I guess maybe Kimiko and Kim.

I don't think you understand the topic. Venus never retired. Maria never retired...

The notion of "2nd career" is ridiculous. It's something that Henin keeps saying in her press conferences and each time I

You quit and then came back. ONE career,

agreed. Kimiko had two careers. So did Martina.

Some other players just "took a break."

Kim for sure.
The others not even close.
Slam + Miami + other title >>>>>>>> the others

Now don't be picky. Like in the NFL, Michael Vick is in his "2nd career". Or if your guy Big Ben ever serves a couple of years for rape :help: and returns to the league, that would be a 2nd career too. :p

BTW, I don't know what Serena is doing named ITT, as she (and Venus) never retired; if being out injured for months triggered a new career, Kim would be on her 3rd now. Anyhow, I think Nikki V's 2nd will start next year, it should be interesting.

quit, forced suspension....you know..... Im kinda shocked Ree isnt on this list... pre 2006/ and post 2006....

But yeah, I dont agree with Henin having a "second career" what exactly did she do in her time off? recover from injury? make some other ventures? career? Start a family? No, nothing..... Now Date/ Kim/ Lindsay/Monica/ Capriati they had "2nd careers".

What about Jennifer Capriati? She's the only one who was even more successful in her second career!

Capriati I believe does qualify, if one calls hitting rock bottom a career splitter.

Capriati I believe does qualify, if one calls hitting rock bottom a career splitter.
But her "first career" by that definition ended in her mid teens. Obviously with the 3 Slams and the #1 ranking, Jen's "2nd" was the best, but I still say it was her "main career".

You'd have a stronger case saying that Monica post-Hamburg (who'd definitely lost the "killer instinct" like sending opponents consolation flowers B4 their matches) was in a "2nd career". Of course she'd won 8 of the last 11 Slams B4 the stabbing, and only one after her eventual return.
