View Full Version : Wimbledon Wildcards Announced

paul_masterton
Jun 7th, 2010, 07:10 PM
First set announced.

1. Heather Watson
2. Laura Robson
3. Katie O'Brien
4. Melanie South

Rest to be confirmed.

Naomi Broady and Anna Smith have been awarded wildcards into qualifying, as they were ineligible for the main draw being ranked outside the top 250 and not able to fall under the exceptions which allowed Heather and Laura in.

Tamira Paszek has also been awarded a qualifying wildcard.

Naomi Cavaday has elected to play qualifying.

Melanie seems to be an AELTC choice, she was automatically put forward by virtue of being in the top 250, but I don't think she was pushed by the LTA as a candidate.

The men's wildcards are hilarious:

Temuiraz Gabashvili, Andrey Kuznetsov, Nicolas Kiefer and Jamie Baker, with three still to be announced

Andrey Kuznetsov was supposed to receive a WC as last year's junior champion. ;)

Main draw WCs entirely predicable.

More interesting that Laura Robson and Sally Peers have got a WC into the doubles (they reached QF in AO this year). Maybe not surprising, but the organisers are obviously hoping for a repeat performance.

Last year's junior champ will surely get one too (I won't even attempt to spell her name;))!

It'll be interesting to see who gets the remaining 3!

I think Lucic, Larcher de Brito & Mladenovic (I'd love Dokic to get one but I doubt it:()

And by the way, that is so typical of Cavaday's'coach to go that. im sure it's'because they want to "earn" their way into the MD rather than getting a 'free pass'. It's'stupid, she's'clearl one of the best grasscourters we have by far and in the MD she has played against Sugiyama (aged 17), Hingis and then Venus and she challenged them all. She's'good enough to beat so many players in the MD but she's'also inconsistent and unfit (see last year's'wimbledon when she should have qualified)

Oh well, glad i'll get to see her in qualies but her coach is an idiot.

I'm annoyed they've bent the rules for Jamie Baker, despite the fact they didn't for Cavaday last year, or Smith and Broady this year.

Hope the bold decision pays off for Cavaday. Given her inability to win back to back matches against even average opponents at the moment I'm not confident, but Wimbledon is a completely different story to 25K events.

Katie: :help: Stupid and deluded as always.

Melanie: Everyone else has already covered that.

I would have liked to see Lertcheewakarn get a MDWC, even if she is completely :tape: outside of Grass.

But at least this way she's probably got a better chance of getting some points. She just lost to Karatantcheva in qualies of a MM, so I think the chances of her winning a MD match are pretty slim. Winning a few rounds in qualies is certainly much more attainable are at least she could play herself into form. I don't think it's particularly idiotic at all.

You're wrong. She won Wimbledon Juniors in '06 and was given a main draw wildcard in '07, where she lost to Santangelo in the second round.

She was given a qually wildcard in '06, the same year she ended up winning the juniors.

In fairness, Wozniacki was given a MDWC in 07 because she was ranked 103 before the event began so must have only just missed the cut-off for getting a DA anyway. Seems like common sense to me.

Why would anyone turn down a WC to the main draw of a Grand Slam to play qualies, especially when it's on your best surface? That really is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while. $20,000 minimum for a first round loss, the chance to get 100 points with a kind first round, the opportunity to play in the biggest tournament of the year...it just doesn't make any sense. For Cavaday and her coach to turn it down because they want to "earn" their way in is just stubborn. They gave you a free pass. Just take it.

Oh, I just found it weird that her rank of 103 wasn't good enough for Wimbledon while a ranking at no. 106 gave her a directy entry into main draw at RG. But I guess Lertcheewakarn's results can't compete with Caro's at that time.

The uptight Wimbledon committee won't give a wildcard to someone who got a 2 year ban for testing positive twice for nandrolone. I agree, what a horrid decision. They should have given the wildcard to an already established player who has had some strong results on grass in the past, but missed the cut this year.

I'm not just saying this because I'm a fan, but I think Lucic would have been a better choice than the next direct acceptance. She's a former semifinalist and already won four matches on grass this week before losing a tight two-setter to an in-form top 20 player. With the right draw, she's a better prospect than a ~120 ranked player who may or may not be competent on grass.

Srebotnik has had plenty of time to get her ranking back up on her own, but the fact of the matter is that she can hardly win singles matches anymore. I can remember one good result since she came back, and that was in Luxembourg. Riske on the other hand just won several matches in Birmingham and took two Top50 scalps, one being Top20.

The choice between them is simple to everyone but a couple Srebotnik fans.

Yeah and she did her two years unlike Pous Tio who had her's reduced.

f that is actually a reason for Wimby committee not to give Sesil a WC its BS. If only she had made it as far as Riske in Birmingham it would have been interesting to see if both Sesil and Riske would have recieved one.

Someone posted her entire match against Sharapova..I recommend watching a few minutes of her play. I mean, her serve is really good, she has great groundstrokes (except a kind of weird forehand), and she even goes to the net often.

I'm a huge Maria fan but I'd be disappointed to see someone of that caliber (Riske's) not get to play at Wimbledon.

I am a tad surprised the LTA gave Riske a MDWC. Granted she has had an incredible week with world class wins, but I wouldn't think they would just hand over a wc to a young American. Alison has some Kleybanova-esque head action going on
