View Full Version : Wimbledon - comeback of the russians

I really think (and hope) that the russians will show a phenomenal comeback in London.

I don't think the winner will be a russian (unless there is a surprise or sharapova plays unbelievable tennis) but i think that there will be at least 7 russians in the 4th round.

Petrova (plays some really good tennis on each surface this year)
Sharapova (is in great form as we've seen)
Dementieva (if she plays)
Kleybanova (dark horse)
Pavlyuchenkova (dark horse)
Zvonareva (faster surface - better results)
Kulikova (was in r3 last year, was in great form in dubai)
Kirilenko (at leat r4 in the two slams of the year...)

and what about

Safina
Kuznetsova

(both have nothing to lose at the moment, both are outside the top 15 and ready to (re)play some good tennis...)

Chances for round 3 (ready for an upset)

Dushevina (played a three set tiebreaker against serena in madrid)
Kudryavtseva (defeated sharapova in 2008)
Vesnina (played great tennis the year before)

Chances for round 2

Pivovarova (played good tennis at the french)
Pervak (was not bad against sharapova at the french)
Lapuschchenkova (well, you never know)
Chakvetadze (well, you never know)

Good thread.

Nadia has never lost first round at Wimbledon.

I hope to see at least two russians in the QF.
But only Sharapova has real chance to go that far unless she doesn't run into Henin, Venus and Serena too early :tape:

i see nadia and maria making the QFs, and maybe Lena if she's fit enough.

good luck to them :hearts:

MariaK honestly sucks on grass. A win in Wimbledon would be outstanding. :inlove: Sveta has not much love left for Wimbledon either in some of those past years. :p Masha should do fine :D

sharapova has potential to reach the semis, but everyone's forgetting she has GREAT potential to lose in round 2 as well. i think her game on grass is grossly overrated

Maria needs to lead the way. I want to see her replicate the determination she showed vs. Henin at RG in every match she plays for the rest of the year - I'll bet she'd end the year top 5 if she can keep that up.

Kirilenko, and to a lesser extent, Zvonareva are hopeless on grass.

Kirilenko, and to a lesser extent, Zvonareva are hopeless on grass.

To be fair, all of them are poor grasscourters but Petrova' serve and Dementieva's robotic hitting (if she's healthy) won't allow them lose early.
With others, it all depends on the draw.

Bah. Maria's taking on Serena in the fourth round. If she plays like she did against Li in the Birmingham finals, realistically, she'd be outgunned real bad. She'll need to play like she did pre-Birmingham finals to even make Serena sweat.

I was really hoping Maria would meet Caroline or Jelena in the fourth round. She really needs to be back in GS quarters and semis at least to gain confidence again. It's basically: Veteran elites (Williamses, Henin, Clijsters, etc. Players with very high win rates and is over 25 years of age) > Sharapova > Everyone else on the tour, particularly her fellow youngsters. Maria really needs to prep up to be part of the "Veteran elites" once she hits 25.

Well, we know now we can't expect anything of Safina anymore:

I don't think it will happen here, at least not in a big way.

Kuzzie still crap, Sharapova horrible draw, and Dementieva (the best Russian at Wimbledon in recent past) not here .

The difference between here and the French is the draw. The Russians were cannibalizing each other early on, both in the qualies and main draws. Here they are more spread out, only 1/1 Russian match in the first round (NPiv vs Masha). In the second round, also just 1/1, Alisa vs. Alla.

Thus, at least one Russian will lose in the 2nd rd. and one will be in the 3rd.

Also, All-Russian semis is possible, but Pavlyuchenkova must win her section.

The Russians seem to play their seeding before being predictably massacred.

Only 1 out of 5 Russians advanced to the Rd. 16, and it was Vera who made the upset.

Maria and Pavly remain in the top half.

BTW: Did you guys notice that we had three Belgian-Russian matches today?

My predictions were wrong, but it was like a "mini-comeback" of eastern europe with 3 of the 4 semifinalists from Eastern Europe.

And with top 4 favourites for Wimbledon (williams, williams, clijsters, henin), this is really surprising.
