View Full Version : My Birmingham Q day 2 report (plus chak stalking lol)!

Ok so birmingham is part 2 of my summer of tennis (notts last week, birmingham and queens this, fingers crossed eastbourne next). i went to see the final round of qualies, but actually my real reason for going was to meet chak

Ok so lets do the important part 1st, got there at 11.40am with my friend kim (legend1) and scanned the practice courts and no chak, then kim spots her behind the practice courts warming up. i ran over like a total spaz and asked her to sign a photo of her, only my marker pen had ran out, but fear not chak had one in her bag (i told her she was more prepared than me). she also signed a tennis ball, then my friend kim said i was her biggest fan and could i have a photo with her, to which she said sure and so she took a pic. i said to chak her 1st round match looked a good one, and she said she hopes so and we will see.

saw her after her practice again, asked her how it went, she said pretty well but not the best. she said she didn't know at that time if she was going to play monday or tuesday.

Ok to the matches -

Robson bt Diatchenko 6-3, 4-0 rtd

Robson broke diatchenko in her 1st service game, it was a long and up and down game, this seemed to take the sting out of diatchenko. robson played solid attacking tennis and whipped her crosscourt forehand outwide to expose diatchenko who has limited reach. Diatchenko was then being outplyed in the 2nd by a large margin as robson hit nice winners on all the important points. the time out seemed like a white flag at 0-3 2nd set, and diatchenko gave up one game after (though could very eaasily have carried on).

robson was a very deserving winner, and her game looked much more impressive on grass than diatchenko. her movement still needs work and her big swings on her groundies get rushed sometimes, but when ontop of a point she looks every bit a top 30 player and beyond.

Kanepi bt ferguson 6-2, 6-4

kanepi was mainly just too powerful in this match for most of the points i saw. she confidently came in and finished off points her big groundies set up with smashes and drive volleys. ferguson tried to mix things up approached the net a few times and had some success, but they couldn't hide the fact tha kanepi just strikes a much cleaner and heavier ball.

Karatancheva bt cavaday 6-4, 6-7, 7-6

Sesil was the much steadier player throughout this match, she is very good when pulled out wide on the backhand, and scrambles around very well. cavaday hit some nice winners and constantly looked to take charge of the match. sesil served surprisingly well on 1st serve, she does however look vunerable when pulled out wide on the forehand. often she resorted to slicing the forehand when she could have had a full swing at it. she doesn't hit through the forehand anywhere near as much as she does on the backhand, it is more of a rallying shot and her court postion was for the most part 2 metres behind the baseline. much of this match was on cavaday's racket, however sesil made herself awkward enough to beat and it payed off. me and kim found ourselves fully behind sesil (like the only 2 clapping and cheering her on) as she was very sweet and nice ealier in the day when i took a photo with her.

sesil made a fan in me and kim today.

other random things -

petkovic is a very hard worker, and looks in amazing shape. huber has the most annoying grunt and shouted cmon during practice. lynn welch was umpiring :worship:. chakvetadze's dad smokes.

Thanks for your nice report!
Are you from Bgham? Tonight I was eating in a sushi restaurant (in the Mailbox) when Magdalena Rybarikova came in and sat down in front of me. She was with two guys (one of them must be her coach I guess). I didn't want to bother though but still I was quite amazed! I've just realized she's the defending champion!

Not surprised you liked Sesil, Sammy. I think she is probably the most down to earth and approachable tennis player I can think of. She's just very easy to chat with and very bright too. I like her a lot.

I would love to go to a WTA event one day. People always bitch at me when I complain about Wimbledon, but this just seems like at this you're so much closer to the players and you can talk to them like actual human beings (!!11!). At Wimbledon the stupid security guards just put a palm in your face whenever you try to talk to the players.

if i had wanted to i could have had about 30 autographs and pics today from players. i mean we actually sat next to sesil for 10 minutes on a bench as she waited for the 1st match on her court to finish. the players are very open there and the practice courts are very open to.

:rolls: I know what you mean. And Wimbledon is always so crowded aswell and the players are either playing or in some other restricted area, so it's very difficult to get autographs.

Of course it's Wimbledon (which is probably the main reason most people go) and I love it, but I think regular tour events would be much more fan friendly. From these pics Birmingham looks so spacious.

Has anyone here been to Queen's? How is it in that respect?

Dawntreader, if you mind me asking, where in the country are you? Come to think of it, Birmingham is probably the only tour level event within semi-reasonable distance for anyone not in the south east.

Yay, great pics Sammy! And you look so cute in your little hat :0)

About Anna's face in that pic, it looks like she's just screwing her face up a bit cos of the light rather than any serious puffyness (cos puffyness, we all know, is always serious!)

Glad to hear Sesil and Anna were both nice - it always winds me up that people think Chak is evil just cos she's stoppy on court!

Yes, it's true. Like Sammy has implied, Birmingham is easy to meet players and when I went to the Barcelona Open, I saw virtually every single player in the main-draw within the first 30-45 minutes of me being there! You buy your tickets from the same place the players get their accredition so when I arrived, Meghann Shaughnessy and Monica Niculescu were in front of me and MJMS and LDL were chilling in a seating area nearby. During the rain delay, I was in the lobby and it's where all the players were hanging about so there's very little segregation, uptight security a la Wimbledon. Paris Indoors doesn't seem to be great for meeting players though.

I'm going to Queen's Club tomorrow so I will see what it's like!

Good going, Sammy - and well done to Chak, she doesn't seem to be crying in that photo:)

Hope you get to Eastbourne next week too, I can't go (although I have the week booked off) but next year I want to again. As somebody else said, Birmingham is the only decent level tournament that's even remotely easy for anyone in the North of England/Scotland/Wales, and even that sucks to get to. Saying that, I've no qualms about going from Middlesbrough to Eastbourne next summer, such a good tournament.

Try and get some more photos of Petkovic if you would;)

Have you been to Eastbourne? Like Birmingham would be if you took the four outer courts and had them spaced out with room to stand at the sides, ten feet away from the match. Plus it has two bigger courts and players are constantly wandering around the place and watching matches, it's superb.

I wouldn't have the nerve / I'm too cool:cool:

I got Marion and Razzano to sign photos last year, and Stosur and Stubbs signed my baseball cap, I'm okay with that. But I was embarrassed as hell to ask Marion for a photo with her, especially as I was on my own and Walter took it:o But it had to be done.

Having said that, hugging a sweaty Petkovic is something to think about:hearts:
