Anna's totally capable of winning against Petkovic, but she needs to serve and move better than today... at this stage, obviously it'd be a big win, but it is within her if she holds it together.

Anna's movement is an interesting issue - she was often talked about in her early pro years as being a really quick mover, because her defence was really good. However, I've never really bought it... Anna's not actually that fast and to my eye, never really has been... she's not going to trash the field in a sprint event. What she did have, were two great things that made her *look* fast... firstly, she had an insanely good read of the game - not sure exactly what her great skill there is, reading the opponent, or just guessing well, but she pretty much always got a ball in time to do something useful, and secondly, Anna used to have really lovely footwork. I think her reading of the game is still strong, but her footwork looks pretty awful sometimes in the past 18 months... I think perhaps it's a lack of confidence on the court... she sorta slouches through points sometimes rather than being on her toes and eager like she was at her best. It can come back of course...

What I think would really help Anna is to bust her ass on becoming stronger and faster physically... I think it would help her game immensely to strengthen up in the way Kirilenko (by way of an example) has seemed to do between last year and this. When your confidence is shot to hell, feeling physically superior can be a big help to a sportsperson. Note, that I don't think Anna should go back to last year's go for broke attempt at being a "big babe" type hitter... I think she should play her close to the lines, angled, accurate game, but just do it with a stronger body so it's just a bit quicker and a shade more powerful.

a wonderful assessment and i totally agree. her anticipation on court really is nearly unmarveled in the women's game today. Radwanska, imo, is the second best to peak Anna. and her footwork used to be AMAZING - for those who want to reminisce, check the AO highlights from her 2007 match with Sharapova. Her feet literally never stop moving.
confidence likely is one of the greatest factors in her declined footwork, but the key to gaining it back is winning matches.
GL against Petkovic tomorrow Anna!!

sammy01
Jun 8th, 2010, 09:16 AM
i've been saying for ages her footwork is horrible right now. it isn't so much balls she pulled outwide on, it is balls coming at her especially on the backhand side. she seems to plant her feet so early on that side and it often results in her hitting the DTL shot wide aas she is far too close to it.

she is deffinately slower thaan say 2007, but i think that is probably down to not playing enough matches and being match fit. i don't think her footspeed is slower just her reactions and setting off to wide balls. when shes on a full run shes still above average movement wise.

anyway i don't think she will play today, i live 35 mins from brum and it is bucketting it down here, has all morning and the weather report looks really bad.

Play has started so is the story a fake. I hope Anna is a lot sharper today. If she wins this the next round looks easier. The thing that made me happiest from yesterday was not the win, but seeing she has gone back to her former serve. If that makes her more confident, it will improve a whole aspect of her game.

me to, i mean the serve she has been using upto this week hasn't been getting her cheap points and still leaking df's. so she still served a lot of df's against mel but 5 aces and from the clips from eggy she got some cheap points on 1st serve to.

i agree. this motion seems so much more fluid for her and hopefully will restore some confidence in the rest of her game. to me, at least, her game really started to hit the downward spiral in 08 when she started viciously tinkering with her serve. she never was able to get any rhythm on it.

I fully appreciate that you're trying for a bit of constructive criticism here, but I think that some of the points that you've made are way off target. For starters, Anna made the decision to put a renewed focus on her fitness level since last year when she made a raft of changes to how she trained and practiced.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/tennis/3179269/Time-of-change-for-Chakvetadze

So the truth is that she's been busting her butt for quite a while now. The defined Anna Chakvetadze that we saw at the beginning of this year -- and even last year -- is certainly not the same baby-faced girl that we can remember from a few years back. If you didn't notice the changes in her appearance then you should click on the thumbnail pic below. That's her at this year's Aussie Open. Can you see her ab muscles through her dress? I certainly can.

So why has she lost all of that definition again? The simple answer is that she's been hurt. For sure she has gained a few pounds during the layoff. That said, she's back on the court and burning calories again, so I don't see a problem with her getting back to her 'fighting trim' weight. As far as her foot speed is concerned, you've got to take into consideration the time that she's missed. If she looks a step slow now, it's because she had the leg injury. That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. An injury is a setback. Let's just hope and pray that she can stay healthy for the rest of the year, so that she can finally start to build up some momentum. :)

She has a winnable match against Wozniak next, then Wickmayer. Just hope she can keep improving and playing at a good level, which will make her competitive at the very least. Patkorazzi never got into the match. She oculd have been just off form today or Anna's great serving dictated the match. I have never seen her serve so well before, its a revelation. I would imagine her whole game lifts because of that. It would be awesome to see the Anna who just steamrolls opponents. She knows how to win tournaments so she definitely has the ability to string some wins together.

what a great win for her - and straight sets no less (first since Rodionova in February, no??)
keep it up Anna - if you make sure and fight constantly and never give up you could probably win this match regardless of form, as Wozniak has a tendency to capitualate at the slightest onset of a comeback hahaha.

You're right that I should have given her more credit for what she's done thus far in strengthening up... and maybe I should have pointed out that her injuries have made things difficult (but I felt that was obvious, since we all know she's had these problems and I'm not expecting miracles) - but the crux of my point is still valid and it is nice to read that in the article she feels this way and is aiming to keep working in that direction. Rest assured my point certainly doesn't involve any complaining about her putting on a pound or two while out injured, or in fact any complaint at all about her fitness or commitment, Anna's fitness and conditioning have always seemed just fine. I just think she could (and by her own designs she will, it seems) be stronger, and that it would help her on several levels.

In other news - Great win!!

queens was great. saw nadal and murray both play doubles. watched roddick practice, saw plenty of singles matches to and got mauresmo's autograph on a tennis ball and the programe for my friend kim (muaresmo's there helping and supporting llodra).

Sounds like you had a great day. I bet Amelie is smaller in person than she looks. She looks very bulky in pictures. Play has been stopped by rain. Hopefully not long. CC hasnt had any play.

yeah rain has stopped play again, chak and riske play the next match after the grandin and spears doubles. lets hope it clears up as soon as possible and she plays tonight.

the tournament is catching up a bit today but is still behind, so if chak could get through to the qtrs tonight then that would be a great advantage.

ahhhh i hope she can win this!! i was hoping for an epic between Wozniak and Riske so the other would be tired and thus easily beatable hahaha.
i think she can do it - and if she does, first time winning 3 matches in a row since NEW HAVEN 2008!!!

Riske def. Anna 4-6 7-5 6-1

Who is Alison Riske? All I know is that she's American and clearly having a good tournament. What the hell happened to Anna? Such a drop-off in the third set.

It's been so long since she won three matches in a row, I'm wondering when it will happen again.

Should have won it. She knows how to close matches out, I dont know what to say. Thats 3 matches this year she was controlling and should never have lost. Its not a technical problem, her game is okay. Maybe her opponent was just really on form today and Yaninka will flatten her. Hopefully. I think I should go eat a large cake or something. Worst part of these losses is wondering how she is feeling

i had to look up and see who this Riske girl is.
Chaky should not be losing to someone of that calibre! :fiery:

A set & 4-2 up... to lose 16 in the third set. Such a typical Chakky match nowadays :(

Come on Anna, you're better than this. Get your head together !

Wimbledon :D.

To give Alison some credit, watching her now against Yanina she does have a very nicely produced serve which she can place very well. But her return of serve and groundies are a bit questionable (although flat, so they suit grass somewhat). She's not a push over on grass, she's genuinely tough to break on this surface, but you can see that Anna shouldn't have been losing many service games to her.

Hopefully Wimbledon will be kind to Anna.

Edit: genuinely tough to break indeed- Yanina didn't break her once and lost in 3. Riske saved several BPs with good serves- I presume she did the same against Anna.

Alison's serve is not ferociously fast so is probably less effective on slower surfaces. But her placement is excellent.

Yanina and Anna were probably both too erratic. Alison has a lovely first serve but I feel her groundstroke technique will be her undoing over the coming years, probably manifesting as "unforced errors" caused by having a very small margin of error and a somewhat late wrist movement which leads to her often slightly "pushing" through the ball (hard to explain, but it's the opposite to having an early wrist movement and "whipping" through the ball). It's just going to be very hard for her to rally consistently on slower surfaces, so she will need to serve very well all the time. Also her ROS is quite poor, especially on the forehand, where she very often has to chip the return.

Actually, guys, apparently Anna is in the Qualifying draw for Eastbourne.
she begins against Anna Lapuschenkova - another Russian.
Anna should win that match handily, as from what i saw in Stuttgart, Lapuschenkova doesn't seem to have the game for a good grass courter.
GL Anna - a few wins here can only help!!

yep just seen her in the qualies draw. lapush seems to not like grass as i checked her results last year and she didn't even bother to enter a pre wimbledon qualies tournie and lost in qualies. lets hope anna can put together a couple more wins starting tomorrow.

Lapushchenkova can only play indoors so... Anna should be able to win it. :)

Howard I dont about today's match but I still think Anna should have won. She was hitting the ball well enough and playing at a good level. Just needs to find a way to keep up the intensity. Cant explain the third set though. It was over too fast when it should have been a slugfest. Hope her form keeps improving.

Eastbourne Q1: Chaky def. Lapushchenkova 6-4 6-4 :)

Straight sets but I get the feeling from looking at the stats that eight breaks of serve (!) in this match meant it wasn't at all simple.

i have to say im a bit more confident and hopeful this grass season than i have been all year. shes still pretty good on grass and her game seems to be getting back to solid ball striking and serving.

she could do with a nice draw at wimbledon because i think theres a good 30 players in the MD she'd be favourite to beat, yet she could draw serena round 1.

im much more hopeful for the summer hardcourt season, playing qualies and her winning matches is doing her some good. beat groth tomorrow please chak!

Eastbourne Q2: Groth def. Chaky 7-5 4-6 2-6

Anna served for the first set at 5-3 up but got broken (including a double fault in there) and dropped the set. Early in the second someone (presumably Anna) must have called an injury timeout because there was a long delay. But after that point she came back into the match and going into the third set it could have been anyone's. Unfortunately after the next few games Jarka seemed to run away with it.

14 breaks of serve in this match. Anna was only winning 51% of her first serve points.

Hope she's okay.
