Martina admitted that her stamina is not where it should be so the long rallies are not good news for her but they will help her get her rhythm. GOOO MARTINA just make it a tough match for her and do your best.

Is Martina approaching the net like she did with Myskina in the Pilot Pen?

xan
Oct 10th, 2002, 12:38 PM
The rallies continue to be long and hard-hit. martina is still trying to come in and attack at the net. Elena then goes for a pass.
Martina has been missing more than Elena this game.

Another close decision against Martina, (shot to corner just out) gives Elena the break

3-2

TheBoiledEgg

If MARTINA HINGIS continues to hit AMAZING shots then watch out TENNIS. I think she will be back on track in 2003. :D Maybe it's still too early without her speed and stamina but getting her good shots and aggression back is a big piece of the puzzle. :D Now if she can hold. *sigh*

its going to plan like i said

Elena's DF's will decide who wins this match and nothing else.

xan
Oct 10th, 2002, 12:45 PM
Now Martina is down 15-40 after a good recovery from elena of a Hingis dropshot, and an excellent pass where she retrieved a ball that looked to be a clear winner.

DF from marti gives Elena the Break.

I am sorry, but why are you surprised? Martina admitted that she is still not fast and is not yet fully fit? She lost 2 and 2 to Petrova last week. Why would you think she can suddenly play much better? I do think she is fighting hard though which is encouraging. :)

It is weird that Dementieva always plays great against Davenport, Williams and Hingis and then can lose to someone whom she should beat. Otherwise she has the weapons to be in the top ten. I don't quite get that???

Anyone who is watching the match....is martina making a lot of errors?

It sounds like she is missing a lot, but is it because she is trying to be agressive and just missing, or just playing very bad?

Thanks to anyone who answers this.....

Oct 10th, 2002, 01:07 PM
I normally support both players but towards the end of the year Elena would need more points to qualify for the Porsche and beating a top 10 player like Hingis can give her more points towards the target. Sorry Hingis this time, but go elena!:)

treufreund
Oct 10th, 2002, 01:07 PM
I think Martina is gonna have to really do some heavy training in the off-season. She is pressing and getting too tired too fast in matches. *sighing* at yet another patience-testing match. But I will hang in there cuz I expect better next year. :D

treufreund
Oct 10th, 2002, 01:10 PM
Martina is OVER IT! She knew that she is not fit enough and just doesn't see the point in fighting for it. It's a shame but I can't say that I blame her for that. Really she just needs to forget playing tourneys but I guess even if she keeps losing early then she has a few days to train before the next tourney.

Elena was too strong for Martina today. She was hitting with moe sustained power and made a high percentage of her shots.

Martina tried to be aggressive, but particularly in the 2nd set was missing too often, and getting passed a lot.

treufreund

Boy Martina really needs to work on her reactions to the hard hitting shots. I think she simply is not getting to them fast enough which means she can't control them or return them with good enough angles. Sounds like Elena is playing well though. CONGRATULATIONS ELENA! BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR MARTINA!

Interview.
Elena "I think I played well today. I won 6-2 62 last time I played her so I knew i had a chance."

Her mother is a great help.

She thinks Martina is a great person and a good example for everyone.

She doesn't have a boyfriend right now. She collects cactus plants.

I don't believe the couple of people who claim to be surprised by this scoreline, very predictable I think.

When are you people gonna get it? It will take weeks and weeks of training at 100% recovery to get back to where she should be. STOP BEING SHOCKED cuz you are making sound like she was EXPECTED TO WIN! She lost to Petrova easily last week and played poorly at the US Open. Sorry I am in a bad mood at all of the unrealistic expectations. This is top-level tennis and you don't just get better in a few days. It's gonna take a LONG time and a lot of hard work. why put all this expectation in your own hearts? Of course, Marti-haters will always say they are "shocked" but her fans ought to know that she is not at her best and not have any expectations.

Apologies in advance for being grumpy but these overly optimistic threads and posts drive me nuts since I play tennis myself and just cannot understand what the basis is for this unrealistic optimism.

Well said treufreund.
You're a true friend. :)
She WILL get back to her best tennis, but don't expect it to be soon.

Wow! I just had to get that out of my system! LMAO @ my own crankiness! Sorry again for being so harsh but let's just get real! Tennis depends on your game not on being Martina Hingis or any other name. Right now the game is not there. The talent is still there but the talent needs a vehicle.

:kisses: and Peace to everyone.

Congratulations to Elena for her win and for her fantastic play! :) :) :)

They have her a cactus; that was so cute! But how will she carry it home?! They don't allow cactuses on plains (I know that from a friend who tried to bring one home).

I think that cactus plants is pretty poor substitution for a boyfriend..

At the end of the day treufreund, Martina is coming back from a serious injury, she's come back too soon, but say she never wins a Grand Slam again, say she never wins a tournament again, even if she never wins a match again, she has achieved so much in her career, 99% of players would kill for a career like hers.

I don't think it's unrealistic expectations.

All top players have returned from injury just fine, with the exception of Pierce who has done it 194 times in her career.

See Davenport, Venus, Serena, Monica, et. al. I put Hingis in that group....and for her to lose to Petrova....who had been out longer and play MANY less events with much less success than Hingis.

And now the scoreline..6-3, 6-1? I thought she would probably lose, but damn, that's a routine score.

Cacti are much lower maintenance than boyfriends and they can prick you too. :o

Agree Martin. Just think ppl are having unrealistic expectations at this moment. I mean it's not like Martina has been playing great, which is understandable. :)

Martina, time to turn up the power. You obvioulsy can't rely on finesse alone anymore, so go develop your serve! Good win Elena, but you must understand that if you beat the likes of Martina there is just no excuse for loosing to Angelica Roesch.

It is VERY UNREALISTIC based on her recent matches. You missed my point. It's NOT unrealistic to think that she will come back at some point but not just one week after playing terrible in Moscow when we know that that loss was not just a fluke.

Excuse me... but look at how quickly Lindsay Davenport came back. Serena came back and won her first tournament. I don't it is unrealistic to expect a 5 time grand slam champion to return to form quickly.

Yes, but this is Elena Dementieva. A loss that would have been acceptable, even if she hadn't been injured.

u have to remember that hingis had problems in her game before the surgery, now after the surgery she doesn't anticipate the shots as well and is a bit slower- while Rena's only problem before her injury was that she wasn't that mentally strong while Lindsay problem was 2 girls with the surname of Williams (in addition to her being a bit slow)

VS fan1 aka Joshua still has a point -the scores are very routine

Hingis with less speed has nothing to offer against power players. She becomes just a punching bag for them, giving them sitter after sitter. She needs her speed back. A player like Dementieva, you have to put her under pressure, take some time from her, you have to force her to make 3-4 winner-like groundstrokes to win a single point. But how Hingis can do that..

And you know what? Out of Hingis last 4 losses, three were to Russian girls. I like Hingis, but I like that tendency too..:)

It's much tougher for finesse/retriever-type players to make a comback than the power-hitters. The simple reason is in the footwork. Think about it. Martina just had foot/ankle surgery. It is even more a struggle for her to be back and winning when the major component of her game is taken away from her.

I myself am not a big hitter of the ball. If I don't play for a week, and then start again, I play like dirt. Most of my team are stronger than me and play much bigger games. They are fine when they haven't played in awhile. I have to concentrate on getting into position, timing my shots and re-adjusting my footwork all over again. The bigger hitters have the advantage of having big shots at their disposal. This gives them an edge while they are re-adjusting to their footwork.

All players need good footwork in order to compete. However, the power-hitters are able to use their big shots to cover for their footwork re-adjustments. The finesse/retriever-type player has no real arsenal and their footwork can be more easily exposed.
