View Full Version : Roland Garros WildCards Info (Predictions Post in Here):

iGOAT
Apr 24th, 2010, 08:48 PM
We know that the French Open has eight wildcards to give and they are very supportive of their own players. We know two of the wildcards are reciprocal with USA and Australia, so they leaves six for them to give. Considering Ivanovic, Molik, and Henin are all in directly and Vaidisova retired, these last six are likely to go to all French players IMO.

These are the choices.
1. Christina McHale (Playoff winner).
2. Jarmila Groth (she just missed the cut).
3. Stephanie Cohen-Aloro (Highest ranked French to not get in, good choice IMO).
4. KiKi Mladenovic (Obvious choice..).
5. Mathilde Johansson (IDK about this choice, but the FFT likes her...).
6. Stephanie Foretz (Old, but was close to cut, so deserved IMO).
7. Olivia Sanchez (Interesting choice to me, but deserved as she has played well lately).
8. Claire Feuerstein (Good choice, pretty young, pretty good).

I got 6/8 predictions right :) Olivia and Mathilde (who I didn't predict) :yeah: you deserve it.
Sév and Yulia (who I predicted):hug: too bad, better luck next year ;).

Well I'm going to try:

MD WC:
1. US WC : i hope McHale
2. Australian WC : probably Groth if she doesn't get IN
The only obvious french WC is in my opinion:
3. Kristina Mladenovic
Then I would give one to:
4. Olivia Sanchez(I never thought I'd say that a few months ago but she deserves it after her 2 titles in USA)
5. Séverine Brémond ( why not?)
6. Anaïs Laurendon ( has improved a lot over the past year)
7. Stéphanie Cohen-Aloro
8. Stéphanie Foretz
The last two are useless WCs in my opinion but I don't see other girls deserving them more.
Feuerstein hasn't progressed since last year so she stays in qualies

Then the QWC in order of obviousness according to me:
1. Mathilde Johansson ( she can't be ignored despite her slump)
2. Yulia Fedossova
3. Stéphanie Vongsouthi ( has a 2nd round to defend)
4. Irena Pavlovic
5. Estelle Guisard ( a decent season)
6. Claire de Gubernatis (I don't know anything about her but she has been in an good form recently)
7. Laura Thorpe
8. the last one would be quite random for me: Huck? Mraz? Chala? Bergot? I would love Constance Sibille :hearts: but she needs a miracle to get one

MDWC

1. USA
2. AUS
3. Mladenovic -> No doubt
4. Cohen-Aloro -> Still in Top 200
5. Beltrame -> She will be not really far from QD and has been always supported by FFT. She will be a better choice in my opinion than Foretz.
6. Sanchez -> she had a good run in USA
7. Pavlovic/Guisard -> Young players born in 1988 and 1989 who deserve to have her chances now in MD
8. Chala/Garcia/Brouleau -> I'm expecting a "surprising" WC for one of them. I hope Cindy will receive it.

QWC

1. Laurendon
2. Vongsouthi
3. Fueurstein
4. Fedossova
5. Pavlovic/Guisard
6. Thorpe
7. De Gubernatis (MDWC if she manages to reach QF/SF in Fes instead of Pavlovic/Guisard)
8. Garcia/Chala/Brouleau

Capra. :o

I think the French organisers may give Watson/Robson a QWC. I guess we don't have a reciprocal deal because none of our players have actually deserved it until Wabson came along but I believe last year Wimbledon gave Glatch, Rogowska and Mladenovic a MD WC and QWCs respectively and then Laura got QWCs into both USO and AO (though that could have been to do with Pervak's WC passing over to her).

I hope Heather gets one this time. :cheer:

More Christina hate from you  Have you even seen Trice to say that you think her game makes her more worthy than Christina?

I think it would be fair to give Robson or Watson a QWC. Laura trains in Paris (I think?) so she might be more likely to get it than Heather.

2. Irena Pavlovic
3. Caroline Garcia
4. Audrey Bergot
5. Claire de Gubernatis
6. Bremond/Foretz/Sanchez/Laurendon/Cohen Aloro (boring choice..)

MDWC

1. McHale : USA WC
2. Groth : AUS WC
3. Mladenovic : pretty obvious choice she is future of French tennis, 2009 Roland Garros juniors champion, could have won her 1st round last year
4. Halep : 2008 Roland Garros juniors champion, great clay season, already got a QWC in Coubertin and FO
5. Beltrame : always supported by FFT
6. Feuerstein : really great improvement since last year
7. Laurendon : same as Feuerstein
8. It can be Cohen Aloro or Foretz I think

QWC

1. Robson : future of tennis, trains in France ...
2. Vongsouthi : always gets a QWC
3. Sanchez : great USA ITF season with 2 titles
4. De Gubernatis : won her 1st round in MD Fes
5. Garcia : great runs in Cagnes and in juniors
6.
7.
8.
The last three QWC could be :
Thorpe : always plays in Q but never won a match I think
Johansson : Although her slump she is supported by FFT ans has her chances to get one
Guisard : gets her chances too
Pavlovic : can make some upsets in QD
Pin : former top 100, 263 and also supported by FFT
Piquion : ranked 280 and never got her chances in any QD in WTA tour

I really doubt the FFT is going to favour Robson instead of their own players. Although I'd love to see Laura in the QD.

Is that why Mathilde Johansson decided to represent France insead of Sweden? To get Wild Cards for French Open.

It's nice to show support for some slumping veterans but they don't have any youngsters to help?

I mean, giving WCs to players outside the top 200 and in their late twenties/early thirties is just weird.

I just hope at least 1 MD WC will go to a young player (not counting Mladenovic as she'll get one for sure) because I really don't see any point in wasting WC's on players who have been getting them for ages and almost never win anything. Garcia is certainly capable of winning a match in MD, she should get one.

MDWC picks:

Christina McHale
Jarmila Groth
Stephanie Cohen-Aloro
Stephanie Foretz
Claire Feuerstein
Kristina Mladenovic
Caroline Garcia
last one too hard to choose...I'll say Beltrame only because she's the highest French alternate not with any direct entry, but there are several other possibilities

QDWC picks:

(if all 8 are French...)

Youlia Fedossova
Olivia Sanchez
Anais Laurendon
Mathilde Johansson
Irena Pavlovic
Stephanie Vongsouthi
Claire de Gubernatis
Estelle Guisard

Don't think there will be many surprises honestly :o A lot of French girls just a bit shy of direct entry for qualies, I'd be hard pressed to see them passed up for WC's

A question about the qualifying wildcards. Simona Halep won the junior championships in 2008 and she (I am assuming as a result of this) was awarded a wildcard into the 2009 qualifying draw. Kristina Mladenovic won last year's junior championships but she is a certainty for a main draw wildcard, so my question is, if that is a yearly ritual will the wildcard be voided and given to a discretionary Frenchwoman or will Daria Gavrilova (runner-up to Mladenovic) be given the wildcard?
