Currently no.2 in junior ranking :yeah:
Birth Date: 27/09/1993
This year she won a GA title and was a RU at GA/G1/G1 tournaments.
She played her 1st WTA match in Ponte Vedra qualies last week and beat Poutchek 2:6 6:4 6:2 (from 2:6 1:4) and then lost to Mattek in a tough 3-setter. Before that she only played 2 ITFs (10k qualies in 2008 and 75k MD as a WC in 2009) and didn't win a match there.
She's now on entry lists for ITFs in Spain, hopefully she'll get a WTA ranking and will start to climb really fast:)
Good luck Monica! :yeah:

No Spanish here:p

She just won her 1st ITF title defeating #1 seed Pipiya 3:6 6:1 6:2 :yeah:
I'd rather see her playing those weak 25k's in Mexico and South America as fields there are not much tougher than in Spanish 10k's but as long as she's winning titles, I'm happt for her:)

Congrats for the title Monica :yeah:

I saw her playing a little bit on indoor hardcourt and saw a couple of matches on red clay. She is baseline player, with good groundstrokes from both sides, hit with double-handed backhand and could use her slice to change the pace of the ball and also for a good defense.
Her second serve is quite slow and predictable and often made some double faults, her first serve is not fast, for sure the serve is the weapon that she needs to work.

I dont know when you last saw her play, but her serve was certainly a wepon when i last saw her play online in Brazil, she was hitting aces and serve winners on both first and second serves regularly, including the finals.

In Fed Cup matches her serve was not a weapon and made a couple of double faults. Also if you saw the stats of her matches in Ponte Vedra qualies she made tons of double fault too more than 10 in one of her matches for sure dont remember exactly the number of it.

This week she is playing in Spain (wildcard-10.000) and is already in SF :yeah:

Aug 19th, 2010, 01:23 PM
saw monica in yog and she looks like a mini natalie portman! :hearts:
as for her game, i think she really has alot of potential with her all court game. she just has to keep her emotions in place and not let her opponents get to her. she was complaining to her coach that her opponent was "pissing me off".

Sep 6th, 2010, 02:57 PM
Here's a clip of Monica at the YOG. She was really frustrated with Zheng's game plan (of moonballing & netplay) and let it get to her in the end. However, she's really friendly & I hope she will do really well in the future.

Sep 19th, 2010, 01:19 PM
How does her style of game looks like?

Sep 27th, 2010, 11:42 AM
from what I saw (which wasn't much) baseliner with good power. Serve is decent, could use more pace. Didn't see her volley much in her doubles match but when she did, she was decent. However, she dosnt' deal with changes of pace very well which was her downfall against Saisai.

Junior Exempt in Surprise win

http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/image/gallery/IO_55570_gallery.JPG - Monica after the AO junior final

The 2010 World No. 4 ranked Junior, Monica Puig, was last week crowned the singles champion at the $25,000 ITF Pro Circuit hard court tournament in Surprise, Arizona, USA.

http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/image/gallery/IO_55571_gallery.JPG - Monica hits a backhand at the AO

Puig claimed her spot in the singles main draw in the American city of Surprise by virtue of the ITF Junior Exempt Programme and came into the tournament with a WTA singles ranking of 656. During the course of the tournament, Puig would only concede two sets all week and face players of a much higher ranking including seeded opposition in the first and final rounds who each held Top 300 rankings. In the final, her 5th seeded opponent, Lenka Wienerova from Slovakia, was some 415 places further up the ranking ladder at 241 and was ranked as high as 128 just eighteen months ago, but amazingly Puig brushed her challenge aside in a stunning 64 60 triumph.

http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/image/gallery/IO_55572_gallery.JPG - Monica at the AO

This was the 17-year old Puerto Rican’s second title win on the ITF Pro Circuit, adding to her April 2010 title won, on the clay courts of Torrent, Spain, in a $10,000 tournament and comes fresh off the back of a successful run of results at ITF Junior Circuit events in January. This run saw her reach the singles and doubles finals, winning both titles, at the Loy Yang Traralgon International in Australia and also finish as runner-up at the 2011 Australian Open Junior Championships.

http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/image/gallery/IO_55573_gallery.JPG - Monica stretching at the AO

The ambitious teen, who dreams of one day being the World No. 1 and winner of Grand Slam trophies, much like her favourite player, Rafael Nadal, has also represented her nation in the Fed Cup on numerous occasions between 2008 and 2010. Her title winning performance in Surprise will go some way towards helping her achieve those goals and the points earned should catapult her to a new career high WTA singles ranking when the rankings are released on February 28th 2011.

wonder what happened last week against Giulia Gatto-M , that was a weird loss, especially considering the results she's had recently , stretching Zheng to her limits, and defeating top 200 players pretty easily ... but anyway ! keep doing good in Switzerland !

Apr 28th, 2011, 10:41 PM
DOn't forget she won a set, but eventually lost the match.

ANyway, is there a way one can calculate a "theoretical" new ranking based on current results?

Apr 28th, 2011, 11:43 PM
check this thread:

The Boiled Egg does update the rankings day after day
right now Monica is at #382 but her points for Civitavecchia won't be added before next Monday, and for Chiasso the week after - or something like that , I don't know the exact rule for (25k$) ITF tournaments

I think that , virtually ,if we add her Civitavecchia+Chiasso points right now ..she should be about #330 or something maybe

Actually, they met last year on Juniors Wimbledon where Ons Jabeur won in 2 sets. The were doubles partners in that tournament too and they are good friends. However, as you can notice, Monica is a totally different player right now, so it's going to be tough for both players

Jun 4th, 2011, 04:59 PM

1) Wasn't the McHale win the biggest one so far? She's 42 right now. Has she been playing well lately (mchale)?

2) She lost in the finals to Irina Falconi (USA) #2 6-3 6-2. Newspaper reported that the coach said the semi-final game took a mental toll on Puig. Especially, the second set, he said, was more mental than anything...

3) Newspaper reported she will play a 25k at Puerto Rico this month

Oct 22nd, 2011, 06:24 PM
I hope she will play a few more ITFs and get enough pts to make AO qualies :)

Jul 11th, 2012, 02:19 PM
Maria Joao Koehler (POR) d. Monica Puig (PUR) 64 46 75

Up next for Monica is the $100,000+H Bucharest, played in Outdoor Clay. I wonder how many more clay tournaments she'll play before transitioning to hard courts. With a ranking of 192 she's got to be thinking about the USO Qualies and making it there.

Jul 14th, 2012, 08:39 PM
Yea, she should be in good shape to make it into the qualifying US open draw. She will ned to do much better than a first round lost though, on her next few tournaments. I want to see her play live.

Jul 15th, 2012, 09:56 PM
Yea, she should be in good shape to make it into the qualifying US open draw. She will ned to do much better than a first round lost though, on her next few tournaments. I want to see her play live.

She got to the doubles finals at Biarritz and lost, but because of that she didn't make it in time to play singles qualies at her next tournent.

So a week break I guess unless Bucharest has any extra Wildcards.

Jul 17th, 2012, 11:22 AM
Thanks for the update. I was soo confused why she wasn't in the next tournament. Im noticing a minor pattern with Monica. She plays really well aka. Roland Garros which help raise her ranking, then the following tournament she flops. She'a done that a few times already. I wonder why us that? I hope she could put a string of good matches together for a breakthrough hardcourt season.:bounce:

Jul 17th, 2012, 12:40 PM
In 2012, Monica is 19-11 in singles, and 9-6 in doubles.

Here are her results by tournament:

FQ: Auckland
2Q: Australian Open
1R: Adrezieux 50K (As a Qualifier)
1R: Cali 100K+H
2Q: Bogota
1R: Monterrey (As a Qualifier)
2Q: Indian Wells
_F: PozaRica 25K
2Q: Osprey 50K
QF: Jackson 25K
2R: Pelham 5K
1R: Indian Harbour Beach 50K
1R: Prague 100K (As a Qualifier)
3Q: Roland Garros
SF: Montpellier 25K
_F: Perigueux 25K
1R: Biarritz 100K

She's got this week off, by virtue of reach the Biarritz Doubles Final and not being able to get to the Singles Qualifying play for Bucharest on time. Next week she's slated to play in the Singles Qualifying draw Olomouc a 100K ITF tournament.

After Olomouc my guess would be she'd return to her home base. I think her ranking could get her into the qualifying draw of the CITI Open but that's be like two months in a row without a scheduled break. I'm intrigued to see when she'll shift gears from Clay to Hardcourt.

Jul 25th, 2012, 07:42 PM
100K Olomouc

Monica Puig (PUR) d. (7)Valeria Savinykh (RUS) 46 75 64

Jul 26th, 2012, 11:46 AM
yes ;) easy win today against Kostova too , she's in QF now :) good luck , Monica ! :cheer:
ps: what's a Boricua!?

Jul 26th, 2012, 12:08 PM
Before the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Puerto Rico the native Arawak tribe that inhabited the island called themselves the TAINOS, the name they gave the island was BORIKEN or BORINQUEN. So a native of PR can be called BORICUA ... we have an expression BORICUA DE PURA CEPA ... roughly translates PUERTORICAN MADE OF THE "REAL STUFF" and by real stuff we mean like PR, haha. :)

Jul 31st, 2012, 03:47 PM
Thats right. when is Monica's next tournament.

Jul 31st, 2012, 03:52 PM
Amazing how she beat Mchale. Monica will definately be a top 50 player in the future. and top 20 shortly after.

Jul 31st, 2012, 05:37 PM
Thats right. when is Monica's next tournament.

Look like she's taking a break. I couldn't find her in any entry lists for Aug 6th tournaments, but I could have missed it.

Aug 1st, 2012, 02:05 AM
Youd probably right? She has a high enough ranking for the us open qualifying. Shes probably taking a break. I hope I get to see her play. Im going to the first day of qualifying.

Aug 1st, 2012, 11:43 AM
Youd probably right? She has a high enough ranking for the us open qualifying. Shes probably taking a break. I hope I get to see her play. Im going to the first day of qualifying.

I was thinking about going to the USO Qualies this year, but my USTA 3.5 team just made it to Sectionals and that trip alone is going to drain $500 out of my money so I don't know I can do two big trips like that back-to-back months.

August doesn't really offer any ITF Hardcourt options that are realistic for Monica, nothing in North America. Weird. The first ITF near her would be the SEP 10th 25K in Redding, CA. Before that we should see her in the qualies of some of the smaller tournaments at the WTA Level.

Aug 3rd, 2012, 01:00 PM
Good point. Im going to look at some of the smaller tournaments. I downloaded the wta application on my phone, which allows me to track most of the tournaments, including the qualifying. Ill keep you updated. Alos, the qualies at the us open start on aug 21. should be fun.

Aug 3rd, 2012, 02:48 PM
I would think she would have played Bronx-ITF, then USO Qualies at a minimum, but maybe she'll just train until the USO Qualies.

Aug 4th, 2012, 10:53 AM
Yea, the Bronx tournament is a great tuneup to the US Open. Im going to look into that tounrament as well. I have a feeling she'll at least make the main draw.

Aug 4th, 2012, 12:52 PM
Keep me posted!!!

Aug 7th, 2012, 01:11 AM
I havent seen here playing in an upcoming tournament. I wonder if she'll play in cincinnati. I find it hard to believe she'll play the U.S. Open without a tuneup in hardcourts. Any updates?

Aug 7th, 2012, 11:26 AM
Looking at the Calendar, I'm thinking QUALIES at Cinci or Texas Tennis Open would be her only shot at competitive match-play prior to the US Open. I think her ranking should allow her entry into the Singles Qualification draw.

Aug 7th, 2012, 01:33 PM
Yea, Her facebook page said something about resting and vacationing until the US open. The qualies start Aug 21st I think.

Aug 7th, 2012, 02:07 PM
Good Luck to her then!!! :)

Aug 21 isn't all that far away, haha.

Aug 7th, 2012, 04:34 PM
Indeed. I'm going to see who else is coming up the ranks of Puerto Rico. I saw on the wta rankings, there are players younger than Monica who are playing. It's exciting times to be a boricua!!

Aug 19th, 2012, 03:42 AM
I hope Monica is training well. I hope to see her in the qualifying tournaments. Are there new youtube videos of her matches?

Aug 20th, 2012, 11:53 AM
If she plays USO Qualies, I'm sure we'll see some more footage of her matches.

Hoping she has a good September!

Aug 20th, 2012, 11:13 PM
Puig will play Sharon Fichman of Canada in 1Q at the USO. Then either the 2nd seed Chan or Ferrer-Suarez.

Jool, did you get to see the match?

I'm wondering why she wasn't able to take that third set?

Aug 22nd, 2012, 06:41 PM
no I only followed the livescores. she had a few opportunities but at the end Fichman broke first :awww:

Aug 27th, 2012, 01:32 PM
Very very very bummed about that result. I wonder if she's going to stick to hardcourts or if she'll play clay ITF's?

...gotta do some research and see how much she was to defend the rest of the year. Hopefully she's got enough resources to compete in the early-year-ITF tournaments and then Aussie Qualifiers.

Sep 7th, 2012, 08:53 PM
I wonder which tournaments she'll play net or is she going to take the year off? Any updates?
