From WTA, upcoming Marion's schedule for clay tourney is :
- Charleston : premier
- Stuttgart : premier
- Madrid : premier mandatory
- Roland Garros : GS

She would skip Rome compared to last year.

Good schedule. No use tiring herself out on that stuff before her real season begins.

Depending on draws... I would aim for 8 clay wins this year hopefully. :scared: Points to defend in Charelston and Stuttgart, a good decision to play Charlston I think, and though Stuttgart is a hard field, she will do better than most clay tournaments because of the indoors. Cutting Rome out of her schedule was a clever idea.

I remember Marion to say last year that Roma clay was too slow. So, she will have a week off between Stuttgart and Madrid where she could earn many points.

I think that the idea this time is to go to defend ranking points before Madrid and RG. She cannot take the risk of a slight fall in the ranking before the 2 major events, because it is slow clay, you know, slow clay.

Since she doesn't play Rome, she has to play Charleston!
Quite a smart schedule I think. She should be relatively fresh for the grass season.
Hope for a better fortune than last year on clay!

Marion on the Warsaw entry list. I hope she doesnt play it.

Lighter
Apr 6th, 2010, 10:14 PM
You're right : http://www.polskitenis.eu/

As Warsaw entry list is not very competitive (Marion seed 3), it's certainly a good way to earn points.

Ferg
Apr 6th, 2010, 10:29 PM
Its a strange decision. Playing both weeks before RG. I prefer her to play Warsaw to Rome though. And you're right Lighter, a good way to earn points. I suppose if she does well at Madrid () she wont play it.

Lighter

I guess that it's also a decision to be far from french journalists just before Roland Garros. For example, last year, she made some clinics and spoke many times to journalists.

Warsaw is a good town to avoid any pressure.

Iceland
Apr 7th, 2010, 07:26 AM
Yeah Warsaw isn't a bad idea! It's perfect as a back-up plan in case of bad results the weeks before. Plus she got to the 4th round in 2007 after reaching Strasbourg SF. So it could work again!

Ferg
Apr 7th, 2010, 11:49 AM
Yeah, that makes sense about the journalists. This way, shes avoiding a week of pressure in Paris building up on here, she'll avoud it all in Warsaw. And, 3rd seed in a premier? Thats good.

Lighter
Apr 7th, 2010, 12:17 PM
As Warsaw courts are slow, i also think that Marion will be more prepared for Roland Garros.

Funny to read from Andy Roddick's coach that Central court is much more faster than Suzanne Lenglen one : "un véritable bac ŕ sables".

Clay is boring;it's better used for making pottery than playing a tennis match:rolleyes:.Also,it's pretty dorky that they only have two colors. Why not make some blue or sterling silver clay to spice up that slow-ass surface?Anyway,Dinara is hurt,Elena's biological clock is distracting her,and Ana is still trying to wake up from a mental coma....So :hearts:Marion:hearts: will probably be my only Queen for this clay season.VAMOS,Marion!!!:bounce:

Marion will be he 5th seed in Charleston. Many big names have withdrawn which could make Marion's fortune. :)
I don't expect a title here but defend her SF points don't appear as such a foolish idea anymore!

Draw out. Marion has Peng/Perry in R2, Vesnina/Sevastova/Arvidsson in R3. Stosur is the top 4 seed in her quarter.

Seems ok. I think she'll make the quarters, or are any of those accomplished clay courters?

The bottom half looks very promising for the second seed (JJ) whose only big challenge will come in the semifinals where Giant-killer Marion Bartoli may cause some damage at the expense of her swashbuckling form.

Chat with Marion on espn just finished :

Scotty (North East Philly)

Do you have any pre-match or post-match superstitions? or things you do after every match?
Marion Bartoli
(2:08 PM)

Not really. I'm not really superstitious.

Andrew (Greece)

What is your goal for 2010?
Marion Bartoli
(2:09 PM)

I would love to be in the final four for a Grand Slam again. I would like to be in the championship at the end of the season, so I need to be in the top 8. If I play the way I did in Miami, I will be in good shape to do it.

Valentine (france)

Hey Marion! I know that you won 3 double titles! do you think one day you will back in double competition?thank you!
Marion Bartoli
(2:10 PM)

I don't think so. Right now, the schedule is already very tough for all of the players. We have to play a bunch of tournaments. The season is very long. I'm trying to focus on singles. To play winning doubles, I'd have to practice more. Maybe when I get older, I will, but right now, no more doubles.

Leo Djkman (Holland)

Do you have a favourte tournement
Marion Bartoli
(2:11 PM)

Well, since I'm French, the French Open in Paris, I want to play well in my home country. It's very special to me. I also like Miami as well. It's a fun city. There are a lot of tournaments that I love. But my top three is probably French Open, Wimbledon and Miami.

Martina (London)

What is your favorite surface?
Marion Bartoli
(2:11 PM)

Grass courts.

Tobias (Bottrop, Germany)

You've got a very interesting playing style - How does it came that you're playing both handed?
Marion Bartoli
(2:12 PM)

When I started playing, I was playing with one hand only. But my father saw Stefi Graf play in 1992 with both hands on both sides. I didn't have the strength to hit with one hand only so he told me to try hitting with both hands and it worked pretty well. She was a big inspiration for me.

Jack (UK)

Hey Marion, I'm a huge fan of yours! I'm interested to know what your daily routine is at a tournament when you have matches every day? Thanks and good luck at Charleston!
Marion Bartoli
(2:13 PM)

It always depends on the tournament if it's a tournament played in the night or during the day. I will try to do some physical training or practice before the match, hitting some balls or other training. My minimum is 1.5 hours of training before a match to get my body warm.

Josephine Bell (London UK)

If you were to play tennis with only one hand on your racquet, would you play as a left-handed or right handed player?
Marion Bartoli
(2:14 PM)

My left. Definitely. I'm lefty, so my left for sure.

Leo Djkman (Holland)

What is your biggest motivation?
Marion Bartoli
(2:15 PM)

The first and main motivation for me is my passion. After a few days off, I want to go back playing. I try to get better every day. I'm always trying to do something better. When I wake up, my first thought is what I want to go out and practice. It's really easy to get motivated to try and improve.
Frank (Dallas)

Are there any other sports that you find enjoyable to watch?
Marion Bartoli
(2:16 PM)

Yeah, I love European soccer. I'm a huge fan of our team in France. I had the chance once to meet the players and see them play in Marseilles. I like also the NBA.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

what is your favorite thing about France that doesnt exist in the US?
Marion Bartoli
(2:16 PM)

Paris. Probably.

Kieran Mason (Norwich England)

What are your chances for the next 2 grand slams ?
Marion Bartoli
(2:17 PM)

I'm very excited. Wimbledon is the one where I have the most chance to do well. This year, I'm going to try and do my best in the French Open. It was really heartbreaking last year. I'm hoping to have more confidence there. The grass court is my favorite, so Wimbledon should be fun also.

Marion Bartoli
(2:18 PM)

First, I would like to thank you for supporting me. I had some great support in Miami. I look forward to seeing you at my next tournament.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Hello again everyone :)

First of all, I was really happy about Miami. My mom even came to watch me. She doesn't travel too often. Sometimes she gets stressed about watching me play because she thinks I'll lose if she does. But she came all the way from Europe and I did really well, so it can't be true! She also brought my paint from home so I could do some painting, which was really nice of her.

After my last match in Miami I stayed in the city for four days. We went to the beach and to Coconut Grove, to the restaurants... it was nice to do well in Miami after last year's heartbreak, and I took a few days to enjoy the city. I haven't been home since January 1st though, so I'm a little homesick!

We flew direct from Miami to Charleston last Monday and I have been practicing on clay for a week now. The first hit was pretty good considering I hadn't stepped on a clay court for a whole year! It's safe to say this isn't my best surface. I'm not sure how the tournament will go but I'm happy about my level right now and I'm improving all the time. When I play tournaments on clay, traditionally I do either very well or not very well, it's never in between! But if I keep playing like I am, I think I can make those very good results :)

I'm not sure if you all know this about me, but I love fishing. Every time I go back home I can grab my lunch box and go fishing the whole day, from early morning to when it gets dark at night. I remember going fishing for the first time with my dad and brother and they are even crazier than me... Anyway, we went to the marina here in Charleston. I love seeing the boats and the people, coming back with fresh catch every day - I love going to the restaurants and tasting it too.

I play my first match tomorrow - I will talk to you all again after :)

What did they say?
- Pauline
"Can you (journalists) say to Marion that we have a good team".
- Alizé
"It's good to hear this".
- Pauline
"Yes, we are fed up. We have to say that we are fed up (with what Marion said in Miami)".
- Alizé
We don't need her. Oh sorry, it's too much (Alizé feels that she's saying something she shouldn't have said)."

I suppose that Escudé motivated them with what Marion said in Miami during press conference.

have you seen Sam play? She's not Serena or Maria, she doesn't hit the ball flat, she actually hits it with a crazy amount of top spin. To be honest, Marion would have needed Sam to have a total mental collapse to beat her on clay.

I never said that Sam was unbeatable, my comment was in response to you saying that clay negates the power advantage, and that's true when you hit the ball flat, but Sam hits the ball with top spin, right out of Marion's hitting zone. She also got 92% of first serves in, and those aren't bad serves either, thats 92% of the time she's getting hard or kick serves in, both of which are taking Marion out of court and negating one of her biggest strengths; return of serve.

As far as I know, the match wasn't televised so it's hard to know what's what. However, I did watch all of Sam's matches in Charlston, and she was very impressive.

I've been told she resorted to a time-out in the third, is that true?
Anyway it's quite a good win to beat Polona on clay. This girl is extremely talented and plays with lots of top spin and slice. Marion must feel pretty satisfied. Hope she carries on. Zheng or AMG are pretty beatable.

1 win on clay so far. She hasn't found her rhythm in this season. It's as if she were invisible, either she isn't playing or she loses to every better player than her. In addition she received so many bagels... Completely lost her pride and fighting spirit. It's really a bad season!

Well, time to ring the alarm bell... unless Lighter has some explanation to give us.

Marion's back to her 2008 level. Fat, slow, depressed, hitting everything so flat :o Only her serve is still decent which is why she managed to win some games. The rest is DISGUSTING.
A R1 exit is coming for sure in Paris, there's no other way.

She needs a psychologist and quickly. Her dad gave her some terrible advice like 'just go for your shots on every game, you need to have a bad moment on the court to play well after'. He told her she was moving well too. :o

I've never seen a top player having such troubles... almost sad to watch her embarrass herself. And the worst is that she did try to fight this time. She looks depressed to me.

Yeah. I don't know why Rezai had to say those things about Marion though. She didn't even ask the journalist exactly what Marion was supposed to have said about her (she said nothing about her), she just started insulting her.

None of us know what has gone on in private between Marion and Aravane, but I really hate how all these girls attack Marion in public. Calling her strange, difficult, anti-social, etc. I'm sure there is truth in what they say, but perhaps she has good reasons for finding it hard to integrate with the other French girls. I mean more than just the issue with her father and the FTT. Maybe she has some kind of anxiety about mixing with other people, because it seems like she just hangs out with her dad a lot. I don't know, maybe not.

But it must hurt to have all these girls saying that she's not like them, and the press being on her back all the time. God forbid she ever reads what the people on this forum write about her. Poor girl. I really wish that she could do well this year to prove everyone wrong. I even found myself hoping that Aravane would lose to Petrova, even though I kind of like her... I'd just rather Marion go further in the tournament after how the press has pitted them against each other.

How did she play? I expected the loss, but heard she served for the first set..

She was 4-2 up in the first but then Shahar went to 5-4, marion clawed back to 6-6 and it went to the tie break obviously. I think it was Marion who had set points first but hit the net on a backhand she tried to just drive crosscourt.
On set point she stopped the rally calling a ball at the baseline out- WHICH IT WAS! Hawkeye confirms it as does the mark which clearly shows it out.
After that it kinda just left her, Shahar played smart and won.

Nice exchange at the net though! And the main thing is she didnt get like ownder 6-0 6-0 on CLAY to Shahar lol.

It was a very fine match from Marion. She didn't play as well as she could because of the tough conditions. BUT her attitude was just great. She seemed to have enjoyed her time a lot, playing with a friend and enjoying the crowd's warm support. Already she participated in that karaoke and she was all smiles and laughing genuinely... :) That's the best thing we could see from her! This Rg has given her confidence.
Im very optimistic for this grass court season. Allez Baba!

Though it's hard to gauge when you're reading words instead of hearing them in live sound,Marion's words didn't seem like bitter resentment, only a factual assessment of the flawed set-up,due to lack of clay court training,by the FFT.Maybe those Vichy cowards will correct that flaw and do a more effective job than their fathers did when they so wonderfully defended the country against the German invasion:rolleyes:

LOL, Bruce. Steady now. It's easy to pass judgement when you're not faced with the horrible choices people had to make during the second world war. If it wasn't an island, Britain would have fallen to the Germans also. France didn't have the luxury of being able to retreat behind the ocean and their navy. The rest of the world gets to claim moral superiority only because they never had to face the horrible reality of human nature, and the choices we might all make to save ourselves and our families. :p

Oh and shame that Marion lost. Just to go back on topic. I was gutted that she won't get to play Serena.

For the record,France tried to take over MY country also...in the mid-19th century...and were eventually repelled violently:devil: after years of occupation:cool:

They took over my country in the 11th century and never left, but the difference is I'm totally over it. :p

I saw the karaoke vid on the Roland Garros website by the way. :hearts: Marion looks so cute joining in. It's nice to see her looking happy because we mostly see her looking miserable on the court. Although I'm not sure what Djokovic is doing to that man.

Having said that,I'm not biased against all French otherwise I couldn't be a :hearts:Marion:hearts: fan, right?:pI agree with you that her happy face is a real treasure, and I even enjoyed the affectionate hug she shared with her buddy Peer at the net...just would've preferred a different match result,of course;)
