Kim has won their last 3 meetings.
Kim has more wins over top quality players since her return
Kim presents incredible matchup problems for Venus
Kim has been much better on hardcourts since her rise

do you want more?ok, but:
Venus was Kim's stiffest competition to her 2009 Open title run and was injured at the time;
Venus leads the overall h2h
Venus presents incredible matchup problems for Kim, as well
Venus total career on hardcourts is more impressive than Kim's, as is her record at Miami and her record in finals.

If both play the best they can, Venus wins.
If both play badly, advantage Kim.
Anything in between is a toss-up.

But we'll see on Saturday

ok, but:
Venus was Kim's stiffest competition to her 2009 Open title run and was injured at the time; excuse
Venus leads the overall h2h it's 2010
Venus presents incredible matchup problems for Kim, as well True but moreso the other way around
Venus total career on hardcourts is more impressive than Kim's, as is her record at Miami and her record in finals. But Vee hasnt been to a Miami final in over 7 years and her hardcourt credentials are mainly pre-2003

If both play the best they can, Venus wins.
If both play badly, advantage Kim.
Anything in between is a toss-up.

But we'll see on Saturday

You can't really include something that happened 7 YEARS AGO back when Hingis and Davenport were #1... i mean.. that really can't tell you anything about current times.

I'm just saying that Kim SHOULD win this match based on all the history in the last 5-7 years. And your assertion that if they both play their best, Venus wins is completely subjective.

I'm not pretending to know the winner.. I'm just saying Kim should be the fave.

1)I wasn't making an excuse for the U.S. Open loss, just indicating that even hampered Venus made it competitive;
2)history at a tournament is meaningful; there is a reason people play better at the same tournaments over and over again. the conditions suit their game for whatever reason, so winning a tournament three times means that the conditions suit you, no matter how long ago the results were;
3)I don't think Venus playing at her best is better than Kim playing at her best is subjective. slam results and titles account for something.

Neither of us know the outcome, but one thing is for sure it will be a competitive match and if Venus shows up playing well, Kim will lose imho.

I didn't watch the Clijsters/Henin match, but well done to Kim for scraping through that one. Must have been one tense and exciting affair.

I find it difficult not to like Clijsters; even she did beat Caro in the USO last year, so I'll root for her. Not enough to bother watching the Miami final though :)

Gotta admit I thought Venus Williams' tennis career would be fading away in 2010. Hmmmm there's being wrong and being very wrong. Perhaps now even her only 2nd North American (as a geographic area US+ Canada; not continentally speaking  ) in 6 years?

except it couldn't be less on kim's racket! vee is the more offensive player and when she plays that game successfully, Kim is nothing more than a counterpuncher/defensive baseliner and needs to use good tactics to open up the court (unless she's serving and she gets vee out wide from it.)

for me kim should win. on US hardcourts she is so tough to just stay with in rallies. venus has been subpar all 2 weeks but has had the kind of draw caro usually gets lol.

venus will have to get a hel of a lot of balls in court and serve well to win, which she can do obviously.

any match kim plays against henin should be totally thrown out the window as an indicator, kim has mental issues against her and is probably the last player she wants to play. lets put it this way stosur played much better than henin in the qtrs against kim and kim won that in comfortable straight sets. to me that tells you everything about playing henin for kim is in her head.

True but the point is Venus' game was on & when Venus' game is on, i.e. low unforced error count & atleast 60% 1st serves, even a great defensive player like Clijsters can't beat her.

The problem is - Venus' game has been OFF this entire tournament. Will it suddenly click???

Apr 2nd, 2010, 01:44 PM
I expect Venus to play better than she has been all tournament, but I'm not sure whether it will be enough. There were signs against Bartoli that she was starting to be more aggressive from the baseline, going for some more outright winners. She won't win this playing passively from the baseline and she knows this.

Should be a good match though.

thrust
Apr 2nd, 2010, 01:46 PM
KIM. I also think that though she has mental lapses, Kim seems more able now to pull herself together in order to win. She did that against Venus in the USO, and Justine twice. Kim is the only player with the power, consistancy and speed to beat the Williams. Also, Venus is not the most consistant player either.

hotviolin83
Apr 2nd, 2010, 01:52 PM
I think Kim is the better athlete of the 2:dog:
And though both seem to be prone to break down, Kim has always seemed the more steady and solid player to me.
I dunno in what sphere Venus might be to have a 60 % first serves in and a low account of unforced error...she only manages that at Wimbledon, where she's truly unbeatable when she reaches THAT level

If Clijsters hits double fault after double fault and makes 60+ errors, she will not beat Venus.

Clijsters beats Venus by being more consistent and picking her shots. Venus, while not playing terribly well, hasn't been beaten because her opponents haven't been able to be consistent enough to match Venus's errors.

If Clijsters can't do that, she won't win.

Kim said: it will be all about serving. She's probably right, but also

Venus needs to:
out serve Kim. possible and likely.
out run Kim. possible.
command the net. probable.
play the big points better. probable.

this could get ugly, but I am thinking Venus in three. she won't go away this time.

sammy01
Apr 2nd, 2010, 09:59 PM
if venus wants to win she needs to go for it. shes not going to out-rally or out-run kim. as has been shown in the past kim is just too fast and steady on a hardcourt unless venus plays 1st strike tennis. she needs to serve great and take any chance to attack.

kim obviously wants the opposite, longer rallies and for venus to not serve great.

venus i think will want to move forward to the net, but has to do it on the right ball as kim is deadly at both the pass and topspin lob.

i see kim as a 60%:40% favourite, because it will be tough for venus to play 2 great sets of serving and hitting on a hardcourt against someone as fast as kim.

Imperative Venus tries to take the net away from Clijsters. Rallying from the baseline will play into Kim's hands, if we're talking about endurance and a greater ability to keep deflecting and creating pace for a long period of time. It's always been a similar aim for Venus, but more so now with her groundgame that no longer tries to rip players off court.

If Venus can serve at around 60-65%, then her ability to control the middle of the court, and thus transition into the forecourt will rapidly improve her chances. Clijsters isn't an offensive returner, and Venus must look to make an immediate impact on the first or second ball. If Venus is forced to engage in long, protracted exchanges, then the match will fall away from her. As athletic and impressively mobile as she is, sturdy defense is Kim's domain.

Could be a very dynamic match, with two very distinct styles. Well, at least disimilar.

If Venus serves well, she has reasonable chances of winning. If she serves poorly, she's toast. She cleaned up her game gradually as the tournament went along, but she still hit way too many wild errors out of the blue even against Bartoli.

I'd say Clijsters is the favourite regardless, but she must be careful not to give away too many of her own service games.

Wonder what the UE count will be like after the match

I'm also for Kim, especially as her drives are on.

Heart says Kim, head says Venus. I would prefer Kim to win obviously, but Venus is going to be VERY tough.

I really think Venus has learned a lot since her last defeat at the USO last year by Kim. She will win tomorrow, and I can see it in two tight sets! :)

Also, I think Vee's exho win against Kim will give her some needed confidence for tomorrow.

I agree that Kim is favourite, but we will see how she deals with the pressure.

Still expect her to win this one in straight sets.

It's also Venus and Henins head-to-head count.

Really though he was comparing Vee and Kim's slam count.
