I will post more thoughts on this match in the morning.

I) That volley Clijsters hit at 66 in the tiebreaker was the luckiest shot I have ever seen a professional hit. :o
II) Her reaction after she hit that final forehand winner was one of the best reactions I have ever seen from a professional. Pure relief and balled-up emotion poured into a facial expression.

Congratulations Kim, even if it was the equivalent of pulling teeth.

Sad for Justine, but Kim deserved this. It was an awful match, but full of drama and had its few moments. Justine needs to come out stronger in their next match and do not fumble when leading! Kim helpled her plenty to stay in the match and almost lost! They're both my faves, but obviously when they meet up I want Justine to kick Kim's ass. Well, maybe next time.

Now beat Venus, Kim!

HELL TO THE MOTHERF*CKING YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That stick, save, and a beaut at 6-6 was AMAZING!!! GO KIM!!

THANK GOD KIM BUT WTF?!!! Up 6-2 and 3-0 with a break point to go up 4-0 and it ends up being won after a second and third set tiebreak. Had a break in the third, lost it, a break again to serve for the match, lost it. Had 3 match points at 6-3 in the breaker only to see Justine storm back. If Kim had lost this match, it could've really affected her mentally going forward vs Justine. Its clear she's not the most mentally tough player but its much better for her to have won this match than lost it!! WONDERFUL!!!

Justin :wavey:

GL in final against Venus, Kim. Two of my faves in the final. Two veterans of the game showing the youngsters how its done!! I love it. So glad its Kim vs Venus cuz if Venus loses I can stand it much more to Kim than Justin!!!!

I do think the Kim of old would have lost this match after losing the lead for the first time... Yes, she played like ass at times and choked multiple times, but I'm impressed that she was able to finish this shit with a win, despite choking multiple times.

But what a hot mess indeed.... so much drama though. Some points from Kim were terrific... don't understand what's up with her being so inconsistent

Nice exchange at the net, though I'm wondering when Venus and Justine will finally meet... Would have preferred Justine, but Kim deserved her win and will probably be very dangerous in the finals. Nevertheless:

UFES: Kim 63 Justine: 44
Winners: Kim: 37 Justine: 19

DFs: 10:8

7 breaks of serve with the 3rd set being a comedy of errors at times. :o

Congrats to Kim - she did look the stronger of the two and was more aggressive but I must say this. I'm more than happy to call out my fave when she plays erratic or crap tennis, but boy has it been annoying as hell to hear the commentator come up with all kinds of explanations as to why they're double faulting or hitting absurd errors. (Fatigue, distraction, lack of confidence etc.) And while this is going on they're talking about Brisbane as one of the best, if not the best match of the last decade? :haha:

But the usual suspects will come along and try and pass off choking as incredibly interesting drama or will argue that it was quality match or whatever. I hope the final is better than this.

Kim deserved the win. Justine didn't do much good throughout the entire match - Kim pretty much dictated what was going on out there. Probably should have won it in 2. Good intensity and effort from Ju though to grab a set and make it so tight. i was so happy to see kim let that raw emotion out at the end, you can see her visibley bottle it up when playing justine whether out of respect or pure intimidation.

that volley was i think off the tip of the frame and had kim not been standing an inch away from the net would not have gone over lol.

great that she won it with a stunning winner though.

kim played herself and henin out there and came through. ok she made life hard for herself but as a fan it is pleasing she got there in the end.

if these 2 continue this throughout the year i just cant watch it, my heart was skipping a beat on every clijsters shot in the tie break.

A lot of unforced errors, but ti gets worse when you compare it to the winners. And then the double faults in comparison to aces.

Eh, good job Clijsters for winning the match I guess, but Henin's going to win French Open!!!!!!!!! (Maybe sharapova though.... Wimbledon 2004, US Open 2006, Australian Open 2008, French 2010, Olympics 2012. It all makes sense!)

YES!! Now if Vee doesn't win the final I can at least accept Kim winning. This match was awful, just downright ghastly. I thought today's semi was a wreck but this had to be the worst match of the year.

Kim is still a choking mess. She basically gift wrapped the match for Justine. I bet if Justine played a little better she would have snatched her present. It's obvious Kim is still the exact same player that left the tour. When things get tight(even if she's in control) her opponents still have a chance. She could have closed it out in two easy sets. SMH.

gEtItToGeThEeEeEerRr!!!!!111!!111

Kim doesn't really feel that she can do much more than win tournaments, so she lost the mental bagage. As for Justine, she thinks and wants to rule the top again and start winning slams and that pressure drags her down.

Apoleb
Apr 2nd, 2010, 03:56 AM
The third set was fantastic quality, pretty much all through out, bar the choking. If you didn't see some of the amazing tennis there, then I pity you.

Anyway, Kim was the better tennis player. It's not even close. The choking though is just absurd. But it always seemed like the match was on her racket, until she decided to blew up leads time and time again. Clearly she's having nightmares about Justine. The only reason the match got close was 1) Kim's choking 2) Justine's incredible fighting and stretching herself beyond her form today.

I'm really reconsidering whether I would call myself a Justine fan anymore. The backhand is not the same shot it was 3/4 years ago. The forehand is a disaster. Her game just looks plain fugly.

This seems to be her new thing now.
She was the queen of angles before but now she is hitting straight up the court. She is doing this in all of her matches back.

:bs: Great drama, but the tennis was ugly throughout. If this were a Venus and Serena match I am sure you'd be the first in the thread criticizing the quality of play. :help:

Go through this thread and telling me how many people are calling it bad versus how many think it's good.

It's my favourite "bad" match though. By a lot.

This is the big shocker to me. I mean no offense to Kim but mentally, she is definitely not great. Justine has her mental giant moments but to mentally lose to Kim is just :weirdo:

gEtItToGeThEeEeEerRr!!!!!111!!111

I have to...agree with you here.
Honestly, Kim was trying to hand her that match gift-wrapped on a single platter and I was really surprised to see Justine continually return the favour as opposed to consolidating.

That said, that I also agree with other posters that Kim still backed herself and didn't totally collapse when she made ridiculous errors and instead willed her self to remain aggressive. She's more confident than she used to be. Justine also seemed to struggle to handle the depth and pace that Kim hit.

@Aces High - I like my torture short and brief rather than extended across 3 protracted sets. I'm not going to argue that this match was better or worse than Venus-Bartoli. (The fact that you're even comparing this match to Venus_Bartoli says everything!) But frankly I don't even need to compare matches to be able to assert that this was a bad match entirely in its own right.

The match was ASS, especially after the first set and into the first few games of the second.

But the drama was awesome....so at least it was entertaining for that reason. there were some great points here and there, so it's not a total loss.

I want 2003 Henin back :sad:It's not like she's actually aggressive. At AO maybe. But not in the last two matches. Hitting the ball as hard as you can down the middle of the court when you get the opportunity is not aggressive in my book. It's just hitting the ball as hard as you can down the middle of the court.

I have to say that I quite like how she was serving this tournament (even today), but the ground game is a disaster. Backhand is being overpowered a la 2001; forehand a mere brush when she's defending (that short swing does not give her enough racket head speed to hit through the ball), yielding short loopy midcourt balls, almost reminiscent of the Pushniack. She hit a total of ONE dropshot today, choosing instead to roll the ball back in play when she got a short ball.

I watched her against Sharapova in 2005 just yesterday.

That forehand is awful. She can't construct points with it. No angles, barely any variation. When the ball is deep, all she can do is hit short up the middle of the court. It's too much of a tough stroke for her to pull it out. It needs a lot of racket head control to control the speed and the acceleration she's putting into it. It all looks like shite.

Please. G1Player is right. If this had been the WS they'd be torn to shreds by commentators and this board alike. Heck, even when they play matches with a barrage of winners and an unprecedented level of power, speed and serving that is comparable to what you'd get on the ATP - as opposed the crap serving that we just saw - they still get dismissed as 'boring' and ripped to shreds for their performance.

Excuses, excuses, excuses - terrible match from both Kim and Justine. No way around it. And I was actually laughing out loud at some of the tennis in that third set.

Please, she always chokes against Justine. At Brisbane , Justine was not that great (imo the final is so overrated, I don't say it because Justine lost it but because both choked/played well at different times, there were a lot of great winners but meh... imo the drama fakes everything) , today neither, and she still pushes kim to a tie break, because Kim can't close it out easily against her. :tape:

The last time that Kim beat her in straights was Toronto 2005 : 75 61 .

Yeah Justine should have won if she played a bit better. That's all I am saying. I don't think she lost all her game, I think she has lost her brain, I want her to construct the points, I miss the smart Justine. But she has to work that FH.

If Justine loses to Kim on grass, or even Venus or Serena; then they have some thinking to do about their careers. The problem on grass is that Kim's best strengths the others do just as well. Footwork, movement and speed aren't much of an issue on grass as it is on hardcourts or clay to someone like Venus and sometimes Serena or even Justine for that matter. They are just as fast as Kim on a grasscourt. And, Justine has a low slice that I know Kim hates hitting which is perfect for grass. I highly doubt Justine will lose to Kim on a claycourt and especially on grass. Kim has more of a chance on clay than grass.

What's this? - Proof by assertion? I don't see this magical majority calling this match good. A lot of people are having a good laugh at it because it is beyond analysis. And a lot of people are happy/excited that Justine lost. To Kim. Again.

 One more time: *if* this were the WS instead of the Belgians, chances are many more posters would be wholesale trashing the match, and wouldn't even bother to refer to 'good points' or any positives and we'd be in for a round of how much their matches inherently 'suck' etc. and other such analytical, circumspect and intelligent comments.

However, since the WS (thank God!) weren't the ones who produced this hot, smelly mess of a match - sure it's drawing some legitimate criticism, but not nearly as much as it would have if the WS had been the players on court. And despite the fact that the WS (than God!) aren't responsible for the error-fest we've just witnessed, you still get the impolitic Sammy taking pot-shots at the WS (for no apparent reason) by his lonesome. Again, if they'd been the ones responsible for this match, I wager that Sammy's voice would be a single voice in a large chorus of critical posters.

I don't think I'm incorrect in that there are already posters trying to minimalise how bad this match was by referencing 'the drama' or the great points that were played in the third set that you'd have to have been blind not to have seen, blah, blah. Even if people can't kid themselves that it was a brilliant display, you're not getting a flood of posters outright dismissing the worth of the match, or condemning the ('lack of') talent or ability of the players - are you? Instead there are a small handful of people trying very, very had to praise it, and a greater number determined to find various silver linings, analyse it, and to deliver qualified criticism etc.

And since you've directed your post at me moby, you are setting up your usual straw man argument that you're then proceeding to knock down.

I never said that a majority of posters would flood the thread to praise this match to the heavens so I don't know why you're arguing about this. I said that we'd get the usual suspects trying to downplay how bad it was, and that posters wouldn't nearly so quick to harshly criticise as they would a similar display from the WS. So far, this is exactly how it's playing out.

Why the comparison to WS match? WS match against each other lack any kind of drama and there are hardly any rallies. Not to mention it's hard to root for either player and you can see the discomfort both players face.

Anyway, I don't think Serena or Venus played tonight so I dont see why they are being mentioned.

The Williams sisters (particularly Serena) get a lot of praise for how they play the game. It wasn't popular when they first came on tour, but I don't think they don't get the respect they deserve. Sure, there will always be haters. But there are haters for every successful player.

I don't see why you're comparing this match to a WS match in the first place. Are you unhappy that the Belgians are not drawing more flake (and they're getting plenty of it) out of some sense of "equality", that there is not enough bitching?

And since you've directed your post at me moby, you are setting up your usual straw man argument that you're then proceeding to knock down.

Which G1Player2 agreed to, and I responded that this was not true (that was my first post on this subject). So let me get this right? You're not happy even though the majority is deeming this match low quality? You want the "usual suspects" to do it too? There are "usual suspects" that go into Justine threads and diss her (not sure which fan base they're from, ahem) too, and "usual suspects" that praise the Williamses regardless of what they do.

It wasn't fantastic. There were some great points here and there, with a ton of bad errors. But Justine was mostly impotent and it was easy for Kim to take charge. I don't think Kim played great even when she wasn't choking.

Justine was hitting the ball pretty well in the third set. She was also moving better than the first set and the first half of the second (I missed the second half). Kim was very aggressive, and I know she was getting short balls, but she was also building the points right through from the start with aggression and stretching Justine on the bh and then getting that shit fh right in the middle of the court. She was also moving superbly, and aggressively at that. There were some spectacular points with a combination of excellent hitting and movement that is very rare to see on the tour. Justine fought extremely well and stretched herself to the limit, but with that kind of game, it was always an uphill battle.

No doubt in my mind that Kim looked very impressive if you can factor out what a retarded headcase she is.

My other point is that he only brought the WS up when someone said that this was a terrible match. That's the tennisforum modus operandi. Saying Justine is 0-3 against Kim and Serena this year was merely an observation and not a dig like Sammy01 was trying to do. I also said that Kim was 7-0 against Venus, Serena and Justine in their last 7 hardcourt meetings. Besides, I don't have a history of hating on players like Sammy01. He HAS a history of brining up the WS when they aren't part of the threads to take hjabs and frequently goes in threads involving them to disrupt them. No. My point is that unlike the Belgians the WS, for whatever reason, don't get more thoughtful, considered criticism, or much in the way of forgiveness when they play bad matches; outside of their fan-bases few posters are scrambling to find the good in those matches. Instead the level of discussion over their bad matches (and even their better ones) always descends into 'they're boring ball-bashers' or 'I always pray that they won't meet' 'oh noes - another boring all-Williams match -up/final!" or the ever-petulant: 'Waaah. I won't be watching!' I'm not asking for uncritical bashing to be extended to other players as well - - instead, I'm questioning why there isn't less uncritical bashing when it comes to players who are not named "Kim and Justine". Do you follow?

Not really, let me remind you that in your initial post on this subject you mentioned that... "But the usual suspects will come along and try and pass off choking as incredibly interesting drama or will argue that it was quality match or whatever".

:haha: My God! I'd totally forgotten that I'd ever said anything like that, as is evident in my previous bout of amnesia...

Hmmm. That's ME trying reminding YOU of what I'd said in my initial post. So how on earth can you think you're in a position to "remind" me of something that I initially said, when I went out of my way to POINT OUT TO YOU that I'd said it in the first place?

You're not happy even though the majority is deeming this match low quality? You want the "usual suspects" to do it too? There are "usual suspects" that go into Justine threads and diss her (not sure which fan base they're from, ahem) too, and "usual suspects" that praise the Williamses regardless of what they do.

Your initial argument is either a strawman, or meaningless.

And let me remind you that you were the first to directly respond to me.

 :help:

*facepalm* Lord. That's... not how a strawman actually works. Look - you accused me of complaining that most posters were flocking to this thread to praise Kim and Justine or call the match "good". And since you're so fond of 'reminders':

What's this? - Proof by assertion? I don't see this magical majority calling this match good.

Guess what - neither did I and never I claimed at any point that most people would post to praise the match! So it's an irrelevant argument that you're setting up, and then oh-so-cleverly knocking down.

 To repeat: I said that the 'usual suspects' (i.e. a select fanatical minority) would *try* to pretend the match was great tennis, while other posters who would normally be quick to rip into the WS if they'd produced a match of this calibre, would be somehow...reluctant to totally dismiss *this* match or condemn it as bad tennis - even though a lot of the tennis actually stank.

This is very different from my claiming that 'most' posters were going to sing the praises the match, which is what YOU were irrelevantly inferring.

What are you failing to follow here?

Leaving the WS completely out of the equation if - let's say Maria, Safina, Kleybanova, Wickmayer, or any of the other so-called 'brainless ball-bashers' on tour had produced 63 UFes, 10 DFs and were acting like head-cases...hmmm, of course there'd be posters talking about the high-points, the moments of quality, mulling over the flashes of genius, asserting that the drama made it great viewing and so forth, wouldn't we? Because that's how this board responds to those players when they play low quality, ugly error-strewn tennis, right? Right!

It seems that ball-bashing and ugly errors are only acceptable, depending on who is doing the bashing. Some players should get a pass, but not others.

Do you follow? My point is that your idea of "equality" is misplaced in the first place. Kim and Justine get called out on for the bad things in their game a lot, they get praised for the things they do well, as do every other player. WS matches do get praise when they deserve it (a lot of people dislike them for the awkwardness that's inevitable when siblings play though.). Serena gets a lot of praise for how well she reads Venus's serve, for instance.

:haha: My God! I'd totally forgotten that I'd ever said anything like that, as is evident in my previous bout of amnesia...

Hmmm. That's ME trying reminding YOU of what I'd said in my initial post. So how on earth can you think you're in a position to "remind" me of something that I initially said, when I went out of my way to POINT OUT TO YOU that I'd said it in the first place? No, those are different points. Surely you realise that arguing that a match is "a quality match" is different from "downplay how bad it was" and being "not nearly so quick to harshly criticise as they would a similar display from the WS." But I digress.
*facepalm* Lord. That's... not how a strawman actually works.I said: your initial argument was either a strawman, or meaningless. I didn't say it was necessarily a strawman. (I'm extending the definition of strawman a little, but it is a canonical extension.)

How it could have been a strawman: If by "usual suspects", you were referring to a fairly large group of posters, which IMO, do not exist. It is a "strawman" in that you misrepresent the numerosity of your opponents.

How it could have been meaningless: If by "usual suspects", you were referring to a small select group of fanatic haters (fanboys), in which case the statement is meaningless, because haters by definition hate and every player has haters (fanboys). This is tautological.

I approached it as a strawman (partly because of my next point), and partly because I assumed you were not into making meaningless statements.

Look - you accused me of complaining that most posters were flocking to this thread to praise Kim and Justine or call the match "good". Guess what - neither did I and never I claimed at any point that most people would post to praise the match! So it's an irrelevant argument that you're setting up, and then oh-so-cleverly knocking down.In that case, pardon me from thinking that your "Please. G1Player is right. If this had been the WS they'd be torn to shreds by commentators and this board alike." was in disagreement to my "Not too many people are calling it a good match. A lot of people are calling it a bad match.", and therefore inferring that you held the opposing view, i.e. (let me spell it out for you): A lot of people are calling it a good match. Not many people are calling it a bad match." It was an easy mistake to make - you did after all respond directly to my post.

My subsequent post about the "majority" was in response to this perceived disagreement of my original statement.

Leaving the WS completely out of the equation if - let's say Maria, Safina, Kleybanova, Wickmayer, or any of the other so-called 'brainless ball-bashers' on tour had produced 63 UFes, 10 DFs and were acting like head-cases...hmmm, of course most of us would be talking about the high-points, the moments of quality, mulling over the flashes of genius, asserting that the drama made it great viewing and so forth, wouldn't we? Because that's how this board responds to those players when they play low quality, ugly error-strewn tennis, right? Right!

It seems that ball-bashing and ugly errors are only acceptable, depending on who is doing the bashing. Some players should get a pass, but not others. Most of us? A majority? Regardless of what you feel previously, surely pointing this out is not a mistake now. Where is this majority?

Nah, it was not an error fest. They both played quite well and an average of 1,5 UE per player per a game is not really that bad if we consider amount of great quality points they produce.

Also I think that all of these dumb hyper-devoted and blind fans of two certain players should shut up if all they have to say is some shit about this match being so bad. I guess even 100 winners from both wouldn't make you say anything else.

Tournament report:

n truth, the first two sets were not the highest of quality and accounted for the bulk of Clijsters’ match total of 63 unforced errors (including 10 double faults) and Henin’s 44 unforced errors (and eight double faults). But a spectacular third set more that atoned for the first two, as both players produced some of their best tennis of the year as they engaged in lengthy, powerful baseline exchanges and sharp-angle battles.

Clearly, it's not only the "fanatics" and the "haters" who thought the third set was excellent quality.

Personally, I thought the intensity and the level of play in the third (despite Kim's ridiculous choking) is the stuff that can save the WTA. :P Serena/Venus/Justine/Kim should be able to finally provide us that all year long, and I'm looking forward now to the final.

The entire match was a horrendous chokefest. No amount of drivel from the WTA website is going to change that. :o

That's the actually the tournament website, which gave a fair assessment for the first two sets. Choking doesn't preclude excellent tennis anyway. People have different perspectives so it's natural we can disagree, but my point is that it's not left field to suggest that the match was high quality in the third set.

WTF WAS THAT???? :tape::tape::help:
I watched it till 6-2 3-0 and went to sleep satisfied with Kim's performance, sure she's gonna win. Of course, I thought to myself - yeah, now she will choke it, but didn't believe it. I woke up, found out Kim won, and was like... ok. Then I saw the result :lol: They actually managed to make the scoreline as close as it is possible  I mean, 62 67 76, who plays like that?

:haha: I just knew there would be chokes. Watching it now and it's just error-error-error. And people were sayng how much higher quality this match would be compared with Venus-Marion...

Are they under an obligation to say it was "spectacular"? They can just avoid talking about the quality like they did with the Venus/Bartoli match.

Look most of us watched the match and you seem to be in the EXTREME minority. It was not really of ANY quality. Of course there was the rare rally, but really it was a battle of nerves out there and it was not pretty.

Their matches are the same this year...Brisbane: Kim led 6:3, *4:1...won 7-6(6) in third with a lot of chokes in last set and now she led 6:2, 3:0 and won 7-6(6) in third with a lot of chokes in last set...don´t say me, that Justine had even few matchpoints also in this match

EDIT: Also in Brisbane led Kim 6-3 in tiebreak, then squandered it but won 8-6:hysteric:

Why the comparison to WS match? WS match against each other lack any kind of drama and there are hardly any rallies. Not to mention it's hard to root for either player and you can see the discomfort both players face.

Anyway, I don't think Serena or Venus played tonight so I dont see why they are being mentioned.

The new face of hypocrisy?

107 from both? Hantuchova once hit 101 UE´s in one match and even almost beat Harkleroad from 0:5 in third

kim only chokes and theres is so much drama because both want it so badly especially over each other. i'll take that over all WS battles in which neither looks intrested let alone wanting to win and the matches that go the distance between them are still flat as pancakes.

Of course...and the Belgians aren't even sister. So what's their excuse?

 happy Kim won but c'mon that was absurd she let the match almost slip away  from having bp to go up 4-0 in the 2nd to needing a 3rd set tiebreaker to seal the deal? :rolls:

Yeah this match was very chaotic and messy  Most of their matches are this way, whether they finish in 2 or 3 sets. I enjoy how competitive they are, but most of the time these 2 don't play consistently well against each other  Maybe it's the pressure.

Literally only read a few pages of this thread and the usual imbeciles still manage to bring their derision of the WS into it :help:

Anyway SO happy for Kimmy. And this is the final I wanted :cheer:

I don't know what to say.

The general consensus is that Kim started to choke moreso than Justine actually fighting back and that's what made the match close.

I guess even though the quality wasn't there, it was a mental battle. A bit disappointed Kim won because I wanted to see a Justine v Venus clash, but well done to Kim all the same for closing it out.

Looking forward to the final.

Well of course, people like to clutch at straws, you know that.

And Sammy01 brought up the Williams Sisters and their match ups when there wasn't any need to do so. Talk about being insecure, criticising their match ups to make this one look better. I think over 100 errors in a three set match really tells the tale. Facts speak for themselves.

Didn't see the match live but just watched the replay of the third set. And Kimmie - I'm so proud of you. 2-0 up against Justine this season. Glad I didn't see it live though.

Kim just looks so much better than Justine but in both matches this year it seems she has to play twice as well because when Kim is up and Justine makes a couple of really good winners - Kim completes Justine's work and hands her own good work back to Justine.

Love Kim's reaction at the end and her complete lack of showing any reaction to her opponent in the match when she failed to take her MPs or serve it out or let Justine back.

One area where Kim is really bad for a top player and I wish she could improve on - is the hifh number of DFs she makes.
