This topic has come up before, and I didn't participate much, cause I really didn't see it as much of a possibility. However, the recent rash of injuries have changed my thinking.

Here's how Eggy has the rankings after Venus' semi. In other words, let's assume she loses the final. (Obviously, I want her to win, for these purposes, let's take the worst case.)

Serena isn't playing. Dinara Safina isn't playing. That's two top players not around to soak up points, offsetting the presence of Henin and Clijsters. Kuznetsova isn't playing well. Dementieva has had the world's worst luck with draws this year. Caroline Wozniacki is defending the chunk of her non-US Open points pre-Wimbledon. Leaving us with ...

................... Venus .. Safina Wozniacki
..............................................
Ponte Vedra Beach .. .... ... .... .. _280
Charleston ...... .. __60 ... .... .. _320
Stuttgart ....... .. .... ... _320 .. __60
Rome ............ .. _350 ... _800 .. _110
Madrid .......... .. ___1 ... 1000 .. _700
Roland Garros ... .. _160 ... 1400 .. _160
Grass tune-up.... .. .... ... _130 .. _470
................. .. 5876 ... 6230 .. 6375
Ponte Vedra Beach .. 5876 ... 6230 .. 6095
Charleston ...... .. 5816 ... 6230 .. 5775
Stuttgart ....... .. 5816 ... 5910 .. 5775 (60)
Rome ............ .. 5466 ... 5110 .. 5775 (110)
Madrid .......... . 5465 ... 4110 .. 5075
Roland Garros ... .. 5305 ... 2710 .. 5075 (160)
Eastbourne ...... .. 5305 ... 2580 .. 4605

So if Venus can play Dinara Safina and Caroline Wozniacki even through clay court season, she will almost inevitably get to the #2 ranking. Kuznetsova could decide to stat playing, and make things interesting, but so far, she seems dis-inclined to do so. Wozniacki and Safina are both, over the last year, far better clay courters than Venus. But IMHO< this has gone from a faint possibility to maybe 25-25%.

Richards Williams could get one last little touch of validation from the WTA ranking system. Not like he needs it.

It's looking very likely especially if Venus wins the final. Would be awesome!

*edit* and wow if Safina can't get fit and get a good amount of points on the board the next couple months she's well and truly out of the top 10 and maybe even top 20 after Wimbledon.

I don't know why you're considering that Safina and Wozniacki are going to lose all ther matches . At least I see Caro winning some matches, and a better performance in RG. Dinara unfortunately is injured and it's probably that Venus pass her in the rankings (Actually Venus passed her). I don't see a clear future from Venus at the race of #2.

Clijsters choked AND played like a** tonight. She won. And stylistically, she's a bad match-up for Venus.

As for 'she choked', I look to Dementieva in the 2004 RG final, and Novotna at Wimbledon as 'choking'. Not what I saw tonight.

I don't know why you're considering that Safina and Wozniacki are going to lose all ther matches .I'm not. However I used an expression that may not be common where you're from. What I wrote was
"So if Venus can play Dinara Safina and Caroline Wozniacki even through clay court season, she will almost inevitably get to the #2 ranking"
'playing someone even' means accomplishing the same thing as they do. In this case, if Venus earns the same number of points as Wozniacki and Safina during clay season, she winds up ahead. Because she loses fewer points as the calendar progresses. Until Wimbledon.

i think Venus is at a happy place right now and wants to truly dominate

Thanks for clearing this. The only important points that have to defend are Rome´s points. Sorry about the question, but Henin is playing Rome? :confused:Because with Henin in the clay season will be tougher for Venus defend that points.

^venus isnt really defending points though.... both Safina and Caro are... Venus has like 400 points until roland garrs and like 600 at Roland garros while Caro and Safina have TONS...... Its more than like Venus will be seeded second at Roland Garros.... AND also VERY likely that if she gets her Wimbledon title back she will touch the #1 spot again before the year is out since she is also not defending much after Wimbledon and Serena is pulling out of tournys left and right.....

Don't put the cart before the horse, if you want to get anywhere.

^ I'm not, just making the statement that this "Will Venus be #2" is almost pointless.... its when will she be... All of her points from last year where in the start of the year.....shes defended them. All shes got left is Wimbledon and then shes basically got nothing until the YEC..... A 3rd round at Roland Garros which she can build on.... (I know Venus "sucks" on clay, but with the spring a Miami final(hopefully a win) and a 15 mayb+ win streak she should have the confidence to make the second week in Paris.....
Especially when you look at what Safina/ and Wozniaki are defending....

^ I completely agree. Anyone who thinks it is ignorant to say that Venus will be #2 is in fact ignorant themselves. All they have to do is look at point breakdowns and it is crystal clear. More than half of Safina's points come from the clay season and Caro has about 1800

I'm not, just making the statement that this "Will Venus be #2" is almost pointless.... its when will she be...Sure didn't look like we'd be here at the start of the year though. So much had to go right for Venus, some of it predictable, but mostly not. Now if we can just maybe 1000 points on clay ... even 1200....

When it's broken down it's clear venus will eventually be number 2 in the world if she maintains some consistency :)

Actually I think it´s more likely to be Caro #1 Venus #2 and Serena #3, but everything can happen

Actually I think it´s more likely to be Caro #1 Venus #2 and Serena #3, but everything can happenHow in the world do you get to that? Especially given that Serena virtually can't lose the #1 ranking til after Wimbledon, and Wozniacki's current ranking includes the Madrid final?

I mean, I'm sure you feel that way, but how does the math work? It looks to me like for tht to happen, Serena would have to not play until US hardcourt season AND Wozniacki would have to win Roland Garros.

Just a few days ago Venus said for the first time in years that she wanted to be #1 again. I found it interesting because she used to say that she just wanted to win every tournament she entered. And knowing that Venus is a very smart lady and given the ranking points situation for the next 2 months explained above, she can and has a good chance.

Henin most likely will not play Rome.

Clijsters gets more emotional against Henin than against Venus

Serena would have to not play the French Open for that to happen. Or Caroline would have to develop a better game enabling her to win a big tournament. :p

If anything, after Wimbledon, Serena has nothing to defend but a QF at the French. Basically not possible given that Wozniacki has 700 at Madrid.

Safina has to defend Stuttgart F + Rome title + Madrid title
Caro has to defend PVB title + Charleston F + Madrid F
Venus has to defend Charleston R16 + Rome SF

Using the same logic, it'll be tough for Safina to defend her points as she won the Rome title last year
Using the same logic again, if Henin is playing Madrid, it'll be tough for Safina and Caro to defend their points too.

It's possible that Venus doesn't gain many points or maybe loses some during the clay season but it's quite likely for her to reach #2 before RG unless Caro wins a big clay title with the return of the Belgiums duo.

I know Venus will be #2 for sure this year, I just can't wait for it to actually happen! :) And if she wins Wimbledon this year and plays well outside the slams I think she can reach #1!

^^Agreed, was a little mistake of explanation by me.
Of course will tough to Safina and Caro defend their points with Henin and other good clay players (Cornet, Suarez Navarro etc.)in clay season.
Safina is a great clay player, Caro demostrated last year that clay isn't bad surface for her, but all know that clay hasn't has a good relationship with Venus. I think that will more difficult for Venus, because isn't her surface, I mean, she had been struggling against Pous Tio(?) in Acapulco, dropped a set in the final against Polona, and was supposed that Venus was going to win Acapulco easily. It won't be easy, even that she hasn't many points to defend.

For sure I can see Venus being number 2 before RG :) Acapulco is really slow clay, and Venus was just coming from Dubai, I think she did pretty well there :) I expect her to do pretty well in Stuttgart and Rome where clay is fast :) With the years Venus has proved that when she is focused and has a goal she can win on every surface :) So lets hope she can get the number 1 spot this year :)

So, it's not like they can meet in every final of every tournament except Wimbledon I guess.
