Venus started off extremely well getting that lead and basically maintaining that lead in the first sey, and ended well to finish the match off. Those were the only times Venus played relatively well.

In between, there were some ugly errors from both, some nice winners, and some brilliant drop volleys from Venus.

That last game was exceptional from Venus.

Venus really needs to sort out her tactics though. At times she was hitting crosscourt way too much and then kind of panicking and hitting a DTL error. If she's going to try to be consistent then she has to move the ball around, especially against the slower players.

Venus' volleys were the only thing that have been good throughout the tournament so I think she needs to look to come forward whenever possible against either Belgian.

Clijsters-Henin match should be interesting, Clijsters is even quicker than Woz so if Henin just stands at the baseline and pounds the ball I can see her losing that match in straights.

Pretty good match. Lots of tense moments there (especially for this Venus fan) but all in all she did what she had to do and I liked how she mixed it up especially when her groundies were just crap. Those drop volleys were beautiful. Clearly she has been working on her net game. Good to see Venus out and about cheering on her big Sis.
Now not to take anything away from Venus but she hit 24 winners and made 31 UFE in a straight set match. Yesterday Wozniacki hit 21 winners and made 35 UFE in a three set match, and people say she is not a pusher - phewt

Venus ties Steffi for most consecutive wins at this tournament at 22.
Serena ties Steffi for most titles at 5.

another interesting fact: It was Venus that broke Steffi's match win streak at 22 and then Serena broke Venus' match win streak at 22.

Between the three, Miami barely had another winner in the past 15 years. That's domination!

It's amazing how people continue to underestimate Venus, bemoan her match pattern that has
been like this since 03' ab strain, and seemingly forget that it takes two to make a terrible match.

Only a fool fan or otherwise counts Venus out because of her play going into any particular

But she more than makes up for it by sending her serves twice as quick, think about how much time that saves compared to a Radwanska's, venus could be practising her ball toss in in the time Agi's hits the ball and it gets to Venus' half of the court.

So? The umpire warned Venus, what more do you want? At least the umpire was doing her job instead of ignoring the time Venus took. It's not like it affected Marion Bartoli, otherwise she would have complained. And as previously mentioned, it takes two players to make a match boring/awful.

But let's get real: You've always had a complex since the Venus and Hingis rivalry, when Venus started beating Hingis with her brute force tennis...the same style of tennis that pushed Hingis into retirement the first time. That, together with the fact Venus is still out there on tour, contending for titles/slams and Hingis is....well not, must be very very tough for you.

I hope you find comfort in your bitterness.

21 winners against a player who covers the court like Henin is not bad. I didn't see all the stats but when you figure in that Woz had a few aces and some unreturnable serves, the idea that Woz is a pusher is nonsense.

I am very pleased with how Venus has played throughout this tournament. It seems that she has done just what she needs to do to win each match. With Venus her main thing always is that she does not want to peak too soon in a tournament and I truly believe that she is indeed saving her best for the final. Why go all out when you do not have to? You know your competition is going to be watching.

Anyone who was truly watching that match can see that Venus always took it to another level when she needed to. When Bartoli broke, she broke right back. When it was 4 all in the 2nd she broke Bartoli and severed out the match with a love game. Venus was always in control of the match and to be honest she looked relaxed the entire time. She has not peaked too soon and you can believe that she is going to bring it in the final no matter who is on the other side of the net.

Bartoli had a very good tournament and lost to a great champion, there is no shame in that.

I know...:o It's 8.25 am where I am so I (rightfully) slept through this. I was hoping that Venus and Marion would put on a tightly contested, high quality, exciting match...but the general consensus seems to be that it wasn't? I'll take everyone's word for it but I don't see why Venus gets 'blamed' for the lacklustre level of play, when Bartoli DFed 7 times and hit 8 winners. I wish Venus had cut down on *her* errors of course but nevertheless she's through to the final where she better be raining fire-and-brimstone type tennis upon whoever is on the other side of the net.:fiery:

I think that she's been patchy from the matches I've seen, which has involved lacklustre/awful play but also some genuinely brilliant points that are either searing winners, or well-constructed and finished with finesse.

Re Kim and Justine. What a short memory people have. The over-hyped Brisbane final was an anomaly compared to the way they've USUALLY played against each other. I certainly hope that it's a great match and the start of an exciting rivalry, but again I'm not counting on it. As to the accusation that Vee is boring... Yeah all of those face-offs against Hingis, Davenport and JJ have been so incredibly dull. Look, she's human and she's played her share of bad/boring matches just like anyone else but she's also been a part of some of the best matches of the last decade, which is not something that you can say for every player. Again, wish this match had been more entertaining and better quality but not every match is going to be a barn-burner.

"I play a lot like you Lindsay." Very cute.

GL in the finals Venus.

She started to lose cause Clijsters kept getting the ball back in play and Venus got tired and started playing like shit.Inorant is a bit strong. Unsportsmanlike, yes. But I am not going to defend her comment. It did ring of sore loser, but Kim WAS playing bad, too!

I disagree with your assessment, Venus was walking away with the match and it looked like it would be a fairly straightforward victory. Suddenly, Kim elevated her game and Venus took too long to wake up to the reality that she was in trouble. That was the first match I'd ever seen her completely go away. She used to be a great front runner. That 2005 QF sticks in my mind as the beginning of her front runner lapses, where she then loses the match, because she wakes up out of her second set stupor, and is like on shit "I'm losing" but can't turn it around. All of her really bad loses have been like this: Pironkova (1st round Aus Open), Suarez Navarro (3rd round Aus Open), Pav (fall 2009), Maria (Miami 2007?), etc., etc., etc.

Not taking anything away for Kim. Kim is now mentally tougher (though we will see what she's really made of tonight) and does make Venus work harder than any other player, but the 2005 QF was on Venus' racket and 2009 4th round was a bit of an unfair fight given Venus' leg (no way was she going to beat Kim with her movement challenged). Kim outplayed her in the Stanford final in 2005, so we at least one of the three times, she can say she convincingly beat Venus.

Re Kim and Justine. What a short memory people have. The over-hyped Brisbane final was an anomaly compared to the way they've USUALLY played against each other.

Nobody is saying they have good matches, but the Brisbane one was great... that's why I'm expecting a good one now. I hated when Kim and Justine played each other in 2006, because Kim didn't give a fuck, and their matches were complete SHYTE.

Well, easy 2 sets win for Venus, only a few problems in the 2nd set, but good result! :)
But I canīt see her winning the final against Justine or Kim if she keeps playing like this, she wasnt impressive in all her matches so far and she would really need to raise her level to win the title here but I donīt think that this will happen!
But ok, she reached the final here and before she won 2 titles in a row, that is really impressive , even though her game doesnt show that really!
Just can hope that Venus will play a good final, and if Venus plays a good match, she can always win!
This time I really liked the end at least, she played really strong from 4-4 to 6-4 and had some good first serves in and seemed to be confident! :)

Ball tosses are whatever, so long as she is within the time. And I think it smart
of Venus to catch the ball if her toss is bad instead of hitting it like some others.

If they are annoyed they should speak up just like Tsonga did last night. Venus doesn't
do it on purpose which is obvious, so if any player is annoyed they should speak up.

Seriously don't mean to be a bitch, but looking at your sig/faves why the hell aren't you used to matches like this? And this goes for a lot of people who have commented in the thread actually.
Venus hit 31/32 UEs, that's relatively normal for a WTA match in the 1hr 30mins - 2 hrs range.

Why would ANY player waste energy trying to find their A game when they are getting a perfectly good work out and tune-up with their B game. It just wouldn't make sense, there were some great points in there - and this was a Venus Williams / Marion Bartoli encounter, some people seem to have had unreasonably high expectations for it.

Did you happen to miss her spectacular net play? Considering most of the ladies opt to trash/push it out from the baseline these days, it was quite the treat to see some delicious volleys. Sure the rest wasn't that pretty but it wasn't the worst match ever either. And like others have stated, Vee only needs to play as well as she needs to for the win. No need to bust out the A game when C will do.
I can assure you Serena has played her fair share of poor quality matches on the way to major titles too. All that matters at the end of the day is getting the win:yeah:

Even if it were like that, they still got it wrong. She had a 19 match win streak on Clay in 2004. The stat mistake was just embarrassing. :o

It's a yip. Players tend to develop them or they become worse as they get older. It was down right painful watching Conchita Martinez serve the last 3-4 years of her career. :tape: Venus wouldn't do it if she could help it, but most likely she will have this problem the rest of her career. It's not a tactic or a ritual or anything that she wouldn't stop immediately if she could help it. I have sympathy for any player with toss yips. Considering all the ritualistic 'Every Damned Point' time wasters that there are in tennis Venus is hardly the worst offender. She's gonna have her good days and her bad days with the toss, but at least it's not something done as a pre-serve routine.

I think you should be more worried about Daniela and Dementieva s mental state, leave Vee to her fans and coaches. She has scrapped through to the final and will peak in the final so leave the whining to her fans...she will hoist that trophy in Kim or Justine s and all her doubters faces...:p

I agree, you and I would enjoy that a lot :)

to me (I'm not saying this as a Justine fan) a Justine/Venus final feels more exciting than a Venus/Kim final.

Thats why I hope Justine is mentally tough and beats Kim. I really do. But it's 1am in the UK and I'm gonna get some sleep. Wishing you, the rest of Justines fans, and Justine herself the best in her upcoming match. I hope to wake up to good news :)

for once im happy venus won, kim or justine would have killed marion in the final. at least now it should be a mouthwatering final, with the chance of some fine rallies.

as for the match both were crap off the ground for the most part, venus held herself and serve together better though.

I love Venus but she can make tennis look so difficult when she's off.

They are both so much better than this.

This match was better than the current kim vs justine match, atleast Venus played well for the first 3 and last 3 games and managed some great volleys.

Henin/Clijsters isn't as bad...but it's much longer and drawn out..which is making it more unbearable

Maybe , but 62 unforced errors from kim/Justine in two sets is worse than what Venus/Marion showed. And thats not counting msot of the returns that Henin has shanked :tears:

I feel bad for some of the viewers in the stands. You get excited for an exhilarating point and then fall asleep waiting for another one. It's not COMPLETELY bad, but then again not enough to keep much interest.

Okay, so from now on Iīll do only what you tell me. Sounds good to me :wavey: I will just care about those two and never say a word about any other player. How exciting that sounds! You should be the official tennisforum adviser to the forum members ;) Im sure they will all appreciate it

I noticed that you are more of a Dani and Demi fan thats why I pointed that out...leave the agony of watching Venus to her real fans.I AM sure you have been disappointed when Dani or Elena lose matches...dont be bitter at Venus just because she has beaten Dani 10-0 or Elena many times.
Venus did enough to win and did not peak :p...

If this was late 09 this match would have gone to a second set tie break which Venus would have proceeded to lose (). Instead she found a way to raise her game and close out the match emphatically. So that's definitely something to be happy with :bounce:

I didn't see the whole match but... from the highlights Venus played quite well in parts. Those backhands that helped her go up 3-0 in the first set were great. And the drop and pick-up volleys were fantastic. There was a clear tactic in her play too.

I'm feeling good about the final :yippee:

Well, if she beats Daniela 10 or 500 times, Iīll be bitter at Daniela, for sure not Venus ;)

Venus didnt tell me before the match that itīs going to be an agony so Iīd better not watch it. I wanted to see some good tennis, I watch WTA matches, not just those of Elena or Daniela or Venus...

I think we see each otherīs point. Iīll continue watching Venus or any other WTA player ;)

Those highlights were great ... I know we missed the 30 errors but if Venus can play like that, she has a serious chance at the title because Kim can give you a bunch of errors too. Should be interesting.

The match was somewhat better than its horrible stats may hint. Overall, Venus' consistency and Bartoli's inconsistency on serve, in sharp contrast to what happened in their previous encounter, was decisive.

Bartoli played much the same she had done in the QF: some very good hitting, some surprisingly good scrambling (but not good enough to keep up with Venus in rallies) and some appalling serving. She had her chances here and there, but couldn't hold on to them as her serve deserted her when she needed it most. She was excellent on ROS though - we all know she's among the best at crushing weak serves, but today she managed to put back into play a surprising number of Venus' bombs.

Venus was considerably better than in the previous matches I saw her play here. Erratic off the ground as usual (but still nowhere near as woeful as in the previous rounds), but there was some undeniably fine volleying, her serve held up for the most and, besides a handful of huge winners, she actually managed to be consistent enough to play controlled aggression at some key points in the 2nd set by hitting with additional spin and margin for error.

Marion's explanation on return on serve :

"In Stanford the surface is quicker, so the second serve is not bouncing that high.
Here it's really getting the speed. I was not able to attack any of the second serve because the ball was jumping over my head.
I think on the rallies I was fine. It was just her serve that really I couldn't get back the ball with enough power to put her serve on the defense."

Venus has been winning her matches depending on her second serve to do some heavy lifting, because her first serve percentage has not been great.
